WOW, that is the one word I can use to describe this book. It was absolutely breath-taking and nothing about it was predictable. I enjoyed reading the book from both Elias and Laia’s perspectives and I can’t help but say that Sabaa Tahir has written this book perfectly, capturing the cruelty of the Martial Empire and the strength, determination and courage present in some of the characters. Throughout the book we get to see the characters grow and figure out who they are and what they want to be. Laia in particular realises that she does not have to be weak and does not need to rely on people for help. She is more than capable of saving her brother herself and that realisation gets her quite far. She is brave by the end of the book and not scared of what will happen to her but only cares about what will happen to her brother if she doesn’t help him. The plot of this book really gripped me throughout. I felt so many emotions alongside the characters, anger, hatred and disgust, just naming a few, that it completely transported me into this horrible world.

This was probably my favourite quote throughout the entire book. It gave the characters an incentive and instead of hating themselves for things that they had done, they chose to learn from their mistakes and not repeat them. This book is full of lessons that the characters learn as they go along, and those lessons are so true and valuable that it shows you exactly what a great people they are, from being able to go through something that is practically unbearable to coming out of it with hope still in their eyes for what lies ahead. I can’t wait to read more of their journeys and see what they become by the end of this series. I liked the writing a lot, it was simple but powerful managing to get the point across and not tiring the reader making it an amazing read.
