A long winded question about Samarina as a ship pretty much.
I can't speak for anyone other than myself, but in my post I was talking about the general fandom portrayal of the ship and how much Samarie's actions are excused, in the context of people that have experienced stalking irl feeling inconfortable in the fandom because of it. It was very little about Samarina the ship as a concept in it's most canon-compliant form (except when contrasting it with it's fanon portrayal), so I'm taking this as an opportunity to talk about new stuff and explain previous points further.
-About whether anything would change if Samarie were a man: I think it would be a different crowd, but people would still be making excuses for him and downplaying his actions because forgiving dudes is the most fandom thing to do ever. I mean, Pav is one of the most popular characters, and that's the kind of treatment he gets. I can see there being more of a pushback against Samarina, but it's debatable speculation I won't go further on about cuz it's a bit pointless.
-There's also people that don't like Samarina because it is toxic and I think that's fine. I personally don't have any issues with it when it's written the way it is in canon, even if I have no interest in it. It is a toxic pairing and I have my own toxic pairings that I like. It turns upsetting when the most basic fandom portrayals of Samarina are turning it into a non-toxic cute ship where Marina loses all of her in-game personnality to facilitate the relationship and Samarie gets woobified OR making Marina the abuser and Samarie gets woobified again.
-The reason I brought up Olivia/Marina was because if someone's looking for a cute ship, why are they removing the fucked up parts from the fucked up ship instead of shipping something that already has a chiller premise? The second reason was that hyper specific time someone brushed off complaints about Samarina saying it was the only wlw ship ingame. I don't think everyone that likes Samarina should be on Olivia/Marina instead especially if it's not to their taste, it was brought up with a specific context in mind.
-I can't give much insight about what is THE correct way to write Samarina, I gave up on the ship long time ago. It seems to me like a herculean task: Marina has way too much self respect for this (See her ending B, she's not even giving her a chance for friendship then. Marina doesn't even hate her, that's too strong of an emotion and she's not that invested. She's more annoyed at her existence and the fact she has to deal with her instead of doing literally anything else. She only has given her the time of day when she was forced to.) and Samarie who has like two hours left to live and is at her worst mentally when around Marina. But as long as the character are respected I think it's fair game. There surely is a way to make it work properly, and it probably would be fun to try to come up with instead of being lazy and boom fanon Marina she loves her and forgives everything instantly. Or maybe the fact that it would never work is what needs to be extrapolated on instead. Also I do find the idea of an AU where the sexual harasser did not do sexual harassing to be in very bad taste and fun fact it has been done before with Samarina.
(Something else I'm adding onto the discussion) -I think there just is a broader phenomenon where popular "complicated" ships just get flanderized into appalling versions of the original premise, at the expense of ONE character. I think of Marina in "sexual harassment apologism: I love my stalker because she had it rough" Samarina but I also would be thinking of Karin in "misogynistic propaganda: I'm an hysterical bitch but at least I can be sexualised" Daarin. Omg give me a way to complain about Daarin I will be there no matter what. Anyway it's unfair for the occasional fan who has genuine interest in it's correct portrayal and drives people (like me) away from those pairings all together to not get subjected to the bad parts of it that are very very popular.
people only like samarina because it's WLW. if samarie was a man you all would realize how traumatizing and creepy her behavior/the ship is; especially for marina
(Footage of me hating on 'those' Samarina fans if you don't do any of that then good)
Genuinely.......... Samarina always has been led by people who are Samarie fans first and foremost. No wonder they excuse and minimize her actions, enforce Samarie's perspective on Marina and act like she's a prize for what she went through, ignore everything that Marina says or stands for, ect.
I think that the most aggravating example is when they try to counterbalance all the disgusting things Samarie has done to Marina by making up a scenario in which they get into a relationship but Samarie becomes the poor victim and Marina is the abusive one (She wouldn't fucking do that) because it's cool don't you love your toxic yuri with a side of victim blaming.
Or that act like Marina would/should be thankful of Samarie for killing her father...
...lol
I've seen someone say that it's the only pushed wlw ship ingame so you gotta put up with it, meanwhile in-game Marina herself says shit like "The sleeping beauty woke up" "Don't worry. I like where your head's at" "I'd never leave you behind" to Olivia within seconds of meeting her. But I guess wheelchairs are too hard to draw let's do Marina giving a cute hug to her voyeuristic sexual harasser and stalker she hates instead heart emoji heart emoji.
(edit: It all leads to a conclusion I forgot to add in my draft lol.
I have a problem with Samarina fans who swear it's toxic yuri but then go on to sanitize it until it's no longer presented as toxic AND Samarina fans who are here for cute wlw ships being cute (and confusingly are not interested in Olivia/Marina or even Abella/Karin that would be more fitting subjects instead). Both of these archetypes trivialize stalking.
Yes, there's nuance here in the sense that it's a ship that's popular enough to transcend the source material ...which a lot of these Samarina fans are not always familiar with. And even if they are, having your own controverisal interpretation of the canon isn't a crime as far as I'm concerned. But it has lead to some harmful rhetoric being spread and an overall atmosphere within the fandom that stalking isn't that big of a deal or is actually very romantic. And that is extremely disturbing for anyone that actually has experienced it in real life, knows someone that has experienced it, or otherwise treats the subject with the gravity it deserves. I'm sure we can do better!)
a fungoreum theorum about samarie samaretta & the way she acts
Samarie is a fun freaky character whos also a freak but has fun. However, the way many SEE her with their eyes I think may not be 100% correct,,, you see, many people may have been FOOLED partially well not really into thinking samarie is this anxious scattered mess in the shape of a malnourished waif. well oh no no no because I'm about to ROCK YOUR WORLD.
Samarie seems very impacted by her environment, suggesting that the samarie we see may be almost entirely different than what we see in the game. Samarie likely has a lot going on in her mind, and acts out in the ways she does because of a couple reasons. For starters, Termina is post-apocalyptic and extremely dangerous. She'd likely be worried that Marina or she could get seriously hurt, or worse, die. Not only that, her life is quite literally withering away.
Samarie was apart Fiend Petr's Ninth Circle, which was a group of children chosen for their supernatural capabilities, and because of the fact that they basically have to communicate and whatnot with the gods for all their life they are physically weakened and have an extremely stunted lifespan. This doesn't mean that Samarie would have died instantaneously once she reached whatever age she is, however, I'm lead to believe that its a leading cause for the way she acts -- she REALLY likes marina, and cant imagine a world without her. So, of course, she does everything in her power to ensure marina and her own safety, going to lengths involving murder of marina's father in order to protect marina. Samarie dies either way at the end. Moving onto her dialog, I think an accurate portrayal of the way samarie *could* act would be the image below.

In her beta version, she seems to be much more confident with her beliefs, going as far as to say that Marina dresses up everyday to tease her. It feels like a much more unfiltered view of her. Not to mention its implied she seems to be able to sneak around mostly undetected. also im finishing this like an hour after in the car so im not 100% immersed in my writing so there might be some continuity errors in my writing
TLDR; Samarie is likely much less frantic and anxious and whatever whatever outside the festival of termina because she doesn't have to actively worry about her and marina's survival.
. if anyone wants me to elaborate i would LAUV tu,,, thank you for reading 😇😇
There’s dialogues in the train where Samarie outrightly says that she’s not anxious about her of Marina’s survival in the festival.
But I don’t necessarily think "Samarie isn’t being herself right now because of Marina reasons" is wrong. It’s just not that Samarie is being anxious out of benevolence or worry for Marina, it’s more so that she’s an incredibly mentally unstable person and Marina’s presence consistently triggers erratic behavior from her in general. There’s little sense we can make out of her during all the scenes in the church or when she’s spying on Marina because she’s having a manic episode at that time.
But to really answer the question of how is Samarie is usually, well it’s something we actually get to see in the game! Very specifically when Marina isn’t involved.
The first interesting scene is at the start of the game and obviously in this there’s still a little bit of that anxiety because Marina’s the subject of the discussion, but the most important point here is that Samarie knows damn well Marina doesn’t know about her. It’s only when she let’s her delusions get the better of her that she comes to think the opposite but in her usual state of mind clearly doesn’t believe it.
And the second scene is in the train after the Church scene, and that’s where I think we really get to see who Samarie really is. She’s rude, she mocks you, she looks down on you, and she’s fucking wonderful. I can’t add more exemples because I hit the picture limit but when you’re in those dialogues playing as Marina she goes back to being delusional and it’s a night and day difference. I’m adamant Samarie is only an anxious scattered mess around Marina but with anyone else she’s an asshole who knows she knows more about this situation than you ever will and she’s such a fun character like that, honestly.
I see people are finding about the Henryk post-poisoning scene so as your local Henryk historian I will provide screenshots for everyone to have some of the context which the wiki doesn’t give.
( @powerin here you go )
It’s most likely that it goes unused because Miro kept misspelling Henryk’s name in the code rather than another deeper reason, much like a lot of other bugged/unused Henryk content LOL.
Anyways forever a 'Henryk doesn't poison everyone because he wants to personally win the festival but because he wants SOMEONE to win the festival so that everyone can live through them, and that he's actually trying to get the player character to be that survivor. Because even though he doesn't believe in magic and all he goes through early stages of moonscorching and goes on to realizes whatever is keeping everyone stuck here has the upper hand so he has the most pragmatic™ reaction to this which would lead to the best case scenario (that he's aware of) and can indirectly fuck up Perkele’s plan of recruiting the winner of the festival to the sulfur cult because the guy with the high kill count goes on to sacrifice himself for someone else. Which is why he tells you his backstory after having told you to fuck off for asking at the start of the game, doesn't attack you while you sleep through the poisoning even though that's something that other characters can do (Caligura, Samarie...), and in this unused cutscene just goes Nice day innit and WALKS away back to the place he almost moonscorched at, very much to die. But also he’s only willing to go on his own insane terms which is why he personally goes to kill caligura because he would fucking hate to have him be the one that survives the festival and while he doesn’t care if you kill someone in front of him, he’ll attack you if you attack him at any point, even after having hard carried you in the festival with the poisoning." Truther
It's peakness to me when the player character is Karin for obvious immortalizing those fallen and perished that will forever live in our memories reasons but it canonically can be every playable character for other thought provoking combinaisons. Or be Daan that instantly kills himself after the festival. Lovely!
