Wait knowing that Simon becomes a tree has changed everything for me with the religious symbolism in Iron Lung. Like we all know about the crucifixion imagery atp (although?? Crucifixion as becoming the tree that makes the cross itself??) but the seed. The seed from Eden, the literal Tree of Life, being what Simon is absorbed into as he dies. The resurrection of the tree, which has always symbolized life and growth, as paralleled with the "resurrection"/resurfacing of the lost data that can bring new life to humanity. And all that connecting to this verse (John 12:24):
"Unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit."
The grain of wheat being the literal tree seed and also Simon...him being alone the whole movie and having to "fall"/dive into the "earth" (which is made of other people)...
