“Combophotos” by Stephen McMennamy Blend Two Contrasting Images Together
Stephen McMennamy (previously featured here) is an art director based in Atlanta. His “Combophotos” series focuses on splicing two mismatched images into one perfectly.
A group of surrealists first conceived the idea of “combophotos” during the 1900s. The technique was called “exquisite corpse”, a game where an image would be sketched on a piece of paper and then folded and passed along, where the next person would add another element to it and the cycle would repeat itself. The result would be a series of unexpected images; a combination of figures with human bodies and animal heads and other unusual images an artist’s mind can concoct.
Stephen McMennamy brings a contemporary twist to this classic game by creatively using props and fusing them with photography which creates a synchronized composition of two dissimilar images. The juxtaposition of two elements effortlessly blend, which the artist uses to try his hand at fantasy and reality.
