Call me Rafa, sir.
being too warm during the day: well, this sucks, but this temperature makes sense because the sun is up, and the sun is making me warm. i am unhappy but logically i can deal with it for now.
being too warm at night: what if i kill everybody.
Hello fellow Rafa fan! :D I'm a little bit late to playing bl4 so I hope you don't mind me sending this message about it, but I just wanted to let you know that your Rafa Idle Chatter videos were so lovely <3 I adore Rafa A LOT so any tidbit of lore I just wanna listen to over and over ^^ and your posts inspired me to record in-game myself to hear them. In the tags of the last one you said something about thinking you got all of them by now so I wanna let you know I managed to find and record 35 lines ^^ almost 12 minutes worth of stuff. Of course there could still be more out there cause I don't think the devs ever confirmed a number of how many idle lines they recorded per VH? But 35 is what I got so far and I was wondering if you would like me to share the video?
Also I would like to ask about the quote where he talks about his dad yelling at him after he signed on with Chronos core (spelling?) I so wish Gearbox included the subtitles for the idle chatter cause while I'm pretty good at English and accents, it's not my native language and I cannot for the life of me figure out what his dad was yelling, do you happen to know or have solid guess at what the line was?
I have more Rafa lore questions but I'll leave it at this for now ^^ thanks in advance!
Hi 👋 hello I'm glad you enjoyed the idle dialogue series, I love hearing any pieces of the VHs backgrounds as well I think it helps build the world and environment of borderlands
I play on console so any recording I did involved sitting around and waiting and I could only handle doing that for so long so I was sure I missed some, the fact you've managed to find so many is incredible I'd love to hear them! Regarding the other vault hunters I've had either very poor luck with Vex or she just doesn't have as many lines as I've sat for an hour or more and gotten nothing but repeats it didn't seem like she had region specific lines either or at least not in the Terminus Mountains. I have recorded a few in the Mad Ellie dlc area (Rafa and C4SH) as well I don't know if you have, or have heard those ones
Yes! The conversation Rafa had with his parents about his decision to sign up with the Chronos core (your spelling is correct) the argument between them was very interesting it made me think that even in the far out sci-fi realms you can still get into fights with your parents about decisions involving your life
Rafa wants to leave and explore and see the world and his parents are scared of what could happen to him and they won't be able to help, unfortunately they couldn't communicate this and it caused friction (seems to run in the family with Rafa deflects his fears and insecurities with jokes a lot as well)
I believe the full line he recalls his father yelling at him is
"You've got a bunk with 3 squares and 4 walls here and all you gotta do is move some rocks now you wanna throw your life away?"
I do wonder if Rafa's parents were born on the Seam or if they perhaps lived elsewhere before being transferred there, it makes me curious if maybe his father had experience and was just trying to warn him or if it was just plain fear mongering
Thank you for the ask 💛
Thanks for the response! Here is the link ^^ I'll keep it unlisted for now since its still a WIP, but I actually found another one today while I was idling while making dinner, so I had to quickly add that to the existing vid and reupload. So for now i'm up to 36 :D I also added timestamps in the description to make it easier to navigate ^^
I can definitely see it being more annoying to record these lines on console, I'm on pc so I just let the game and OBS run while I'm napping, out on appointments or doing other chores, I don't know for sure how many hours I recorded idling in total, but I'd say definitely around 30 hours by now, and even then there's some lines I only heard once or twice, like that new one just before writing this.
I did try to record in the Mad Ellie dlc area, onlygot about one 2 hour recording there but the only 'new' one I got there was one I had actually first heard the day before in another region (but that time my cat decided to step on my mouse so there was a loud gunshot right in the middle of the line so I couldn't use that one xD), so if there's any unique dlc specific lines that you manage to capture, I'd love to hear it! I was really hoping there would be unique lines there, it would make sense too with the whole 'hearing voices' thing the dlc has.
Also I'm sorry to hear Vex has been a bit of a pain to record, hopefully its just unlucky and the other VH's have a similar sized 'idle library' as Rafa seems to have. I myself haven't tried to capture any of the other VH's yet, I'm 100% planning on playing them and making their own idle compilation but like I said, I'm late to the game, I've only just finished the main story + dlc1 for the first time earlier this week with my co-op game and right after I wanted to do a solo Rafa run first before going for any of the other characters. My brain has got me in a bit of a 'rafa hyperfixation choke-hold' lol, not that I'm really complaining, but that does mean there's not much mental bandwidth to explore the other vault hunters yet. But I'm looking forward to hearing all their lines once I do ^^
I'm glad I got the spelling correct! But that does leave me curious, just what is 'Chronos Core'?? I'm assuming that it's a part of Tediore based on how he talks about it but I find it interesting that he never mentions CC outside of idles. Do you know if Chronos Core is mentioned anywhere else in either bl4 or other games? I'm not really an expert on borderlands lore even tho I did play some of the other games in the past. If it is part of Tediore, I'm just trying to figure out how it all fits together, especially because within CC there was also the Iron Dogs unit Rafa was a part of. I'm just curious about the whole timeline of Rafa's past, cause from what I can manage to piece together through (idle) dialogue, Echo logs and his YOLT video, there's either inconsistencies with GB's writing/timeline or I'm just a bit too dumb to figure it out lol so if you have any headcannons I'd love to hear it! Thank you for your take on what his father yelled at him, I can definitely hear it now ^^ so if that is the correct quote, do you think '3 squares' is like a unit of measurement? Like, 'my room is 3 squares big' or like 'you get 3 square meals per day here and all you gotta do is do some work for it'. I'm so delighted that his idles reference The Seam multiple times, I really enjoy learning new tidbits about his life on the Asteroid, even tho it was apparently quite a difficult time for him growing up there. Personally, I'd like to think that his parents were born somewhere else and moved to The Seam, probably just for work cause it doesn't seem like a very comfortable or easy place to life which makes me think they probably didn't have many other options. I can also see his grandparents being the ones that first moved to The Seam which, unless his parents and grandparents all moved there together as adults before Rafa's birth, would make Rafa only the 2nd generation of his family born in micro-gravity, but my HC preference is the one where his parents were born somewhere else and moved to The Seam. I don't think it goes back many more generations than parent/grandparent. Seeing how the game and GB itself refer to Rafa as a 'belt colonist' makes me believe the mining community in The Seam hasn't been there for enough generations yet to no longer be called 'colonists' (actually, what is the general consensus on how many generations it takes for colonists to stop being referred to as colonists and are just called 'residents' or 'citizens' instead?) And I can definitely vibe with the HC of his father having some experiences that he's trying to protect Rafa from, albeit in a bit of a 'tough love/just do what I tell you to' kind of way where even if the reasons behind it were valid, he never properly explained them, thus leading to friction. The idea of his father 'fearmongering' just seems a bit, idk, cruel? And while I think its safe to say Rafa's relationship with his dad growing up wasn't always great or healthy, it wasn't so bad that Rafa's now unable or unwilling to admit that he loves and misses his father (dlc1 echo log). So I don't think his father was necessarily a bad person, but more of a typical hardworking but stoic, tough love, kind of dad, and I wouldn't be surprised it if took until Rafa matured himself, to see that his dad was well intentioned in the end. That was a lot of rambling, I really hope its all comprehensible lol Sidenote: your tags talk about how you can't find any videos of the VH lines? Did you mean just the idle lines by that or all the dialogue? Because there is a YT channel which has (core game) voice line compilations for the bl4 vault hunters and some npc's. Like, here's the Rafa one and it's over 4 hours long and its his combat lines, his quest and cutscene related dialogue and the 'efforts' like all the grunts and yelling when he's dashing or taking elemental damage. Sadly (and interestingly) tho, that video doesn't include idles or his lines while he's possessed by the Timekeeper.
AH!! thank you, having the timestamps is a lovely addition, being able to just have the game pulled up and constantly recording does seem very convenient, in my experience I found that once the VHs start doing idle chatter one happens every 7-8 minutes so I at least had an idea when I'd hear one again, maybe that can you help with editing?
The lines I heard in the Mad Ellie dlc seemed to happen for you in the Terminus Mountains so probably just a cold or snowing area triggered line,
I am sad that as far as I'm aware there is no unique lines in the Elpis shatter fields like c'mon now Rafa is in zero g again and he's got nothing to say? I don't believe it
I don't think the Chronos corp section of Tediore is mentioned anywhere else, the only game I could imagine that might have brought it up is the TFTBL sequel that I haven't played as Tediore makes a big appearance in that, a couple of rank and file soldiers wear uniforms/armor that looks remarkably similar to Rafa's in his story trailer so I don't know if that's standard issue for Tediore or exclusively for that group
And the name makes me so curious about what Tediore was trying to do, Chronos (not to be confused with the titan Cronos he's the one who ate his kids) is the Greek personification of time and was basically the creator or father of the first group of gods. Was Tediore attempting to make immortal god soldiers? Extremely skilled and deadly so much so not even death or time could stop them?
And Rafa being a part of the so called "iron dogs" I think it was other Tediore soldiers just giving them a nickname for being augmented with the Liveframe/Deadframe y'know? Sign up for this experimental tech and you'll get nicer bonuses at the cost of your body, so they ended up being mocked for it despite in Rafa's case the Liveframe is essentially a disability aid he cannot live outside of zero g atmospheres or even walk without it
3 squares almost certainly means meals, so roof over his head, bed to sleep in, food to eat just the most basics of care and I like the idea of Rafa's family being moved or transferred to the Seam for work, and if they weren't I meant his father repeating back fear mongering techniques used by whatever corporations owned the Seam belt, I can fully see them telling the people living there that this is an incredible place to work and live I mean it's so easy all you to do is mine and your house and food is provided for you so why would you want to leave? other planets are scary and dangerous
So I don't think his father is cruel perhaps just very scared for his I /believe/ only child and ends up repeating the messages that worked on him as an attempt to get Rafa to stay
And I am aware of the bl4 VHs dialogue videos they are lovely, I meant for the bl3 characters because while there's a few videos for their story lines I can't find any for general voice lines, for example combat, idle, skills etc.
I'm glad you like the compilation and hopefully any lines that you hadn't heard yet did a good job of scratching that 'lore itch' :D
Yes, it seems that on average, they start (and continue) their idle dialogue after about 5-10 minutes, but I also had rafa be silent for almost 40 minutes only to then say two lines in like 6 min so it's still a bit of a guessing game, but on average, every 10min or so.
My editing is very easy, I pick a quiet place to idle so I don't pick up random enemy encounters or npc chatter, then afterwards in a very simple but free video editing program i just look on the audio bar for any peaks in the audio and cut out everything else, then I just remove the ones I have already heard and saved in the compilation vid, trim the little breaks in between lines, and done ^^
Also I do hope the audio volume for the yt vid is good enough, it sounds fine on my pc but i noticed it was a little quiet on my mobile even on full volume. I'm not experienced in editing at all so I'm not even sure how to fix it without going the complete opposite way and risk blowing out the audio completely and I suppose it will still depend on the individual device but I just hope it wasn't too quiet on your end.. if it is, I will do some research on how to make it better, either when I find new lines to add or just as a reupload of what I have so far.
I will also go back to the dlc to record more (probably today). While I'm hoping that there's dlc specific lines, part of me is also a little bit skeptical tbh.. but seeing how I've only had one 2 or 3 hour session there it's too soon to tell if there's really nothing unique there. Then again with how incredibly rare (or simply unlucky) some of the other lines seem to be, I'm not sure if there's any number of hours that will convince me that there really isn't anything new to discover anymore lol
as for the Elpis bit, I agree 100000% and I also told my partner who I played co-op with how surprised and disappointed I was that he doesn't make any mention at all about being in microgravity again! Even just a simple 'ah just how I remember it.' would've already been nice, gearbox! T_T
I think there were some other moments and locations where I felt like they dropped the ball a little on not having Rafa comment on things that he should definitely relate to but I can't remember what those were off the top of my head.
Thanks for the correction on the spelling! Tbh seeing it as *corp* still confused me a bit cause it made me wonder if that is meant as in 'corporation' which made no sense cause why would there be a different corporation within the Tediore Corporation and then I remembered that Corps (silent S, pronounced as 'core') is literally a military/army term and now everything makes more sense, So Chronos Corps it is :D
Unless we hear any more, I'm happy to assume for now that Chronos Corps is just the collective name of the footsoldier part of the Tediore army (tbh I don;t even know if that army has any other branches like a dedicated air force or something.)
So then among the god knows how many footsoldiers that comprises the Corps, there's only 1 unit (the iron dogs) who either volunteered or were chosen to become Deadframe Prototypes as per Rafa's own words (''the only ones dumb or desperate enough to go under the knife (getting the Frame installed) to get out from under the boot.'')
Which metaphorical boot is he talking about tho I wonder?? Does he mean the boot of whoever owns The Seam mines? If so then that would only apply to him even tho the iron dogs line make it seem like everyone (or at least multiple) in that unit were doing it to escape some kind of oppression.
Maybe it's just a thing a lot of them had in common. All joining this army and volunteering for Project Liveframe to escape something from their past, get out from a situation where they feel 'stuck' or hope for better opportunities in the future. Don't a lot of young army recruits sign up for similar reasons in our world after all?
The fact that he signed up to get out from under 1 boot only to replace it with Tediore's boot is something young, possibly naive and desperate to explore Rafa probably realized too late...
Don't really have a lot of thoughts myself on what Tediore was implying with the name 'Chronos', but creating an army of immortal soldiers makes perfect sense, cause after all, Rafa and the other Deadframe Prototypes were just that; prototypes. And a soldier that keeps fighting even after they die is a kind of fucked up immortality I suppose?Eventually, Tediore would want to perfect and roll out this technology to everyone in their armed forces. (tho for their sake I hope they still have some spare scientists lying around to work on that tech after the dude killed some of them in the YOLT video lol)
Also I think the Tediore soldier uniform seen in NTFTBL is just the standard issue uniform/armor for the Corps, the deadframe ones are set apart by having the extra armor plates and wiring of the Exo-suit going down their arms, the plate which supports the combat arms on the back and of course by the artificial muscle fibers and any other internal modifications which obviously can't be seen from the outside.
What do you think is a logical timeline for Rafa joining Tediore and getting his Frame cause that's where I get confused a little. in the YOLT video, Rafa says how 'the first time he stepped off the shuttle (so I assume arriving at the Tediore facility) he fell flat on his face'' but the 'demonstration' shows us that it's not just that he cannot walk around on regular gravity, he can't even breathe! So what was the timeframe between him getting off the shuttle and him getting the deadframe? Do you think Tediore has some kind of microgravity testing chamber that they just kept him in until his suit was ready or is gearbox expecting me to believe poor Rafa was just crawling around the base gasping for air for god knows how long until he got his suit??
Also do you think he was ever properly deployed while in the Tediore army? Or did he go from getting his deadframe straight to the shareholder presentation where he then defected. (perhaps with a period of training in between to test and get used to the Frame)
Ok 3 squares meaning meals makes a lot of sense yeah ^^ and I also assumed that Rafa was an only child so I like the idea of his father just trying to get him to stay and be safe (altho we heard how 'safe' The Seam is... Poor Drizz)
Also did you notice this while picking up his DLC1 Echo log?
Number unavailable.. Do you think anything could've happened to his parents since he left? :( i really hope they're ok, even tho I love me some tragedy and angst in stories, I really want them to be ok and alive somewhere so that Rafa can one day go back and see them again like he promised. Perhaps they also manage to leave The Seam themselves and are out there looking for their son..
and to leave on a less heartbreaking note, did you play through the Chef quest in the DLC? She's offering to cook you anything you want as reward for helping here and Rafa asks for Tres Leches cake, I wonder if he's a bit of a sweet tooth ^^ I'd like to think he is

Borderlands 4 - Rafa, The Exo-Soldier
The Cracks echo logs
These echo logs are absolutely amazing! Great characterisation for the VHs!
Vex’s soliloquy about the “curse” of being a Siren really made me think about what it means to be one…
Amon’s love for Malcom is so sweet! Even if he’s dead, he carries his memories so that he’s never truly gone…
Rafa’s message to his parents has to be my favourite out of these new ECHOs, the Spanish and how much he care for his mom and dad really shines for me. My favourite Vault Hunter never ceases to amaze me…
Harlowe’s excitement about the unknown really warms my heart. She truly is an amazing scientist, Maliwan never deserved her…
This adventure into the vault of the damned really made them think, and I’m glad they shared their thoughts with us in these echo logs.

getting to know my mutuals and followers: if you had to sing karaoke on the spot RIGHT NOW what would your go to song be reply in the tags
We’re gonna take down Forge. I’m gonna show Marlamin and the Elk tribe they were fools to let me go.
I love that they love each other. I love that Ed knows it’s gonna be painful for her to go see her ex and face another round of rejection and loss of family. I love that he waits for her outside, patiently, and has a song ready to cheer her up. I love that I actually believe they care about one another deeply and that the move takes the time to show their friendship.
I really, really love that Holga joins in and has fun; she doesn’t toss his lute away or roll her eyes and rides off, or insults him, or anything like that. Ed also isn’t annoying her or putting his lute where it shouldn’t be (so to speak).
I really just love that this is a moment of one character trying to cheer up another character and it’s allowed to actually work and be a sweet moment for the film and it’s not undercut for a specific kind of humor.
Because this movie is very comedic and they easily could’ve made this it into a joke, but showing actual friendship instead of characters trading witty, one-liner barbs 24/7, does a lot to deliver sentiment and heart.
I love that it shows he knows her well enough to know it will make her feel better. How often do male characters get to show emotional intelligence, instead of just being the butt of a joke?
Oh are the entitled little babies doing their "the game would have been literally perfect if Halsin hadn't been given the ~4 hours more of voice lines extra than he would have had if he was just a camp follower" tantrum again?
Must be Tuesday.
For the record, Halsin being given four hours extra of voice lines did not cause:
Wyll to have less content; if you think Wyll deserved more, you should be mad at Lae'zel, not him, as they're the ones who shared a writer (and it's clear his writer favors Lae'zel)
Minthara to have less content; if you think she deserved more, you should be mad at Karlach, not her, as they're the ones who shared a writer (In fact, quite the opposite of "stealing content" from poor baby Minthara, Halsin being added is part of the reason Minthara was added at all, because they would never have added a romanceable companion of one gender without also adding one of the other gender; if it wasn't for fan demand for Halsin, Minthara too would have stayed in act 1. Further, Minthara actually has three minutes more of voice lines than him)
Astarion to have nearly twice as many voice lines as Wyll
Wyll facing numerous bugs, including to his romantic greetings
Some characters, especially Karlach and Wyll, having unsatisfying story arcs
And before you say "but if they hadn't been busy adding Halsin's kisses they could have been free to fix Wyll's glitches sooner!" Those are different teams. Programmers are not artists are not writers. Once the kisses were drawn, it would have taken minutes to program them into the game, compared to the weeks-long endeavor identifying and fixing bugs is.
"But why couldn't Halsin's writer have written for Wyll and Minthara instead?! Halsin still ruined the game!" I hear you crying. One, that's not how the process for Larian to allocate writers for each character works, but even if it was, why are you complaining that Halsin was given a writer to share with another character and not that Astarion was given MULTIPLE writers? Astarion is literally the only character who actually could be accused of being shown favoritism by Larian.
Halsin's spellcasting lines were literally broken for over a year, and his point-and-click lines were broken for half a year, and there was a bug for nearly that long where traveling from act 2 to act 1 would cause him to die, and you still think that Halsin getting a handful of kiss animations, and those animations being used to tease patch 6 (with Halstarion and Shadowzel kisses both being used) is a sign of "favoritism"? Why then do you not say this about every character who was given new kiss animations?
And by the way, you really give the game away when you say "Larian should just go in the code and remove Halsin entirely". Because that would take months of story, animation, AND programming work- it would be an all-hands-on-deck effort. Even if we ignored that Larian is discontinuing story updates after patch 7, this would literally guarantee no companion ever gets another update again. Even if you amend it to "Halsin shouldn't be able to leave act 2" we are still talking about the same thing. If you say this, you make it blatantly obvious that you literally don't think too much work was put into Halsin, you just plain don't like his character and are using him as a scapegoat over things that actually did go wrong at Larian. You're cutting off your nose to spite your face, and your goal of your precious baby getting more content is secondary at best to hating Halsin.
And for the record, Minthara has three MORE minutes of voice lines than Halsin, so you can't even say she was in any way mistreated compared to Halsin. Further, if you look at who has received how many new lines in post-launch patches, Halsin is near the bottom and Minthara is near the top. There's more of a case for Larian showing favoritism to Minthara than there is for them showing favoritism to Halsin, seeing as Larian keeps adding dialogue for her good path recruitment, and backed out of adding the ultimatum to the game because Minthara fans whined that it was too mean to her. But I don't go around crying that Minthara being added to the game literally is the reason I can't kiss Halsin in act 2, because that would be insane.
The ONLY companion who has a case for being mistreated compared to others is Wyll compared to the OTHER ORIGINS, not to Halsin.
