Concept / Reflection Statement
The core intention of our group publication was to provide a snapshot of another cultural context, an alternate future with its own traditions and systems. With this intention we hoped to construct a sense of confusion when viewing the work from our own context, warping familiar elements as well as creating completely new ones. This was done through the lens of an increased or differing globalization experience, creating a new cultural homogony, as well as increases in technological systems in aiding the human sensory experience, integrated to the point that could be seen as a beginning of the Post-Human. Although many of the intentions in this work seek to be free of our current context, we also recognised that its influence was irremovable, and as a resulted, responded to current social and political issues surrounding digital freedoms within our work such as copyright and censorship.
Much of the progression of this work coincided with group research and collaborative information sharing. Starting from a very wide pool of information and artworks, we undertook a process of convergent and divergent information gathering. From basic concepts and works around Futurism, Punk Zine culture, Internet imagery, Post-humanism, Afro-futurism and non-liner approaches, we were able to discover a sense of cohesion and proceed with developing the publication. Any problems we experienced in terms of technical (GIFS not working) or theoretical (linking our theme to a certain design) production were overcome in a similar way, with additional advice from Anna and and internet forums. Although we worked together on the majority of the publication we allocated separate areas of work specific to our group members experience and interests. Jacob and Ryley dealt with the majority of the digital aspects of the work, Jacob dealt with the creation of much of 3D objects and layout. Conversely Harrison and Ryley focused on much of the theoretical development and research. The majority of our experimentation occurred around a few specific mediums. We developed phony legislation as a political backdrop for the cultural works presented in our publication. This required lengthy experimentation with layout and word choice. The interactive elements (a very necessary aspect so as to communicate the technologically enriched communication experience) although relatively simple in their theoretical basis, required a large amount of technical experimentation and iterations. Furthermore, the globalized sound and visual works present within the publication underwent quite a few iterations to most clearly communicate our intention. Examples of all of these can be viewed on our respective Tumblr’s.
Our group approach to the work was to treat it as a collective publication of our works but also as an artwork in itself, both reflecting the overarching theme of the work. The overall ‘Vaporware’ aesthetic was chosen for this reason. It provided an engaging way with which we could engage an audience with retro-futuristic ideas and provided a level of abstraction with which we could present our intentionally confusing and alienating work. Furthermore, it provided a direct link to current themes such as copyright issues (we presented found works along with our own, an inherent aspect of internet age aesthetics and culture) as well as provided a platform for the more futuristic media. The heaviest influences on our publication were Stelarc’s body of work, particularly ‘Muscle Machine’, the ‘Declaration Of The Independence Of Cyberspace’ by John Perry Barlow and the website ‘my body is browser friendly’ at <http://cagoleapaillettes.com/~bbgirl18.html>. The Afrofuturist movement as a whole, particular the works of musicians such as Sun Ra, as well as inspirations in visual culture such as Blade Runner and Cowboy Bebop were also hugely influential in our publications construction.

Further Experiments and Works ________________________________________On the Left: One of the core works of our PDF publication. Subscription to the Vapourware aesthetic and early computer graphics with the repeated inclusion of the Street Fighter II character Chun-Li. The Nintendo Virtual Boy takes the place of one of our future technologies, aiding the sensory experiences. In this instance, the recontextualisation is able to reference both past and future at the same time. The mash up of English, Japanese and Spanish alludes to a futuristic, globalised context in much the same way as the html banner does as well. ________________________________________On the Right: A simple GIF for inclusion in the PDF as a pop up or in the corner of pages. Adds to the perception of data retention and explores much of the subjects Harrison has posted about in his experiments.
Another audio work as an extension of the original globalised language idea. Within this work the original idea of cultural confusion has been modernised through the addition of technological manipulation. Effects such as reverse reverb and digital editing create a glitched, unnatural feel and lend to the idea of communication processes being irrevocably altered through technology. In providing a snapshot of alternate futures, we aim to represent warped sensory media as to give the direct impression that the works need to be viewed from a different cultural perspective and with different technological tools then those with which the audience experiences the work in their current state.
Audio work experiment #1. Looking at an audio work to be inserted into the PDF. Using the ideas from Afro-Futurist artists such as Sun Ra and Pharaoh Sanders, who attempt to explore a cultural snap shot from a context differing from our own. In this work i used Google Translate as a tool to produce a standard sales pitch in English, Spanish and Japanese and edited them together to create a futuristic, globalised language.

Formatting Experiments 1,2 and 3
Works are constructed from stolen digital material and subscribe to vapourware aesthetics. A depth study of which revealed the recurring themes of, simple GIFs and cartoon imagery, imagery associated with 1995-2005 pop culture, presence of coding and other digital practices, pastel gradient colour schemes and simple geometric shapes. Examples of every aspect can be found within these initial experiments.
For the collective publication, I decided to specialise more so on the role of censorship and classification in the media and information systems in the future. I’ve especially been looking at the legislation that has been passed which give governments the power to govern and control.
This experiment has derived from ‘The Declaration of Independence of Cyberspace’, however takes an alternative view on the freedom of cyberspaces. I made this speculative legislation ambiguous in nature, so that it did not reveal any contextual information about the period of time our group is hypothesising about. This was achieved by constantly referring to the country as the state, never putting an official date on the legislation, and using an abstract and unseen watermark.
This speculative legislation is derived highly from contemporary Chinese Internet Censorship legislation, however focusing more on how the government, or whatever form of power that would control in the future, would aspire to govern a space in which individuals can be anonymous and their actions are separate from their physical self. This legislation is quite totalitarian and advocates the State having absolute power over the users. I plan on also creating a news article or some other form of socialist propaganda to balance out these claims, thus avoiding the dull prediction of a futuristic world in which the government has absolute control. Because even in society today, their is a constant battle between hackers and those trying to govern the internet, and it is reasonable to assume that this will also be the case in the future.

Layout and Artwork Experiment
Experiment with digital layout design using checkerboard digital background and perspective arrays, both found in digital design software. A vapourware style model hand sits in the bottom centre of the page and balances the two altered images at the top. Pixel warping done in Processing (my manipulated version of the original program written by Kim Asendorf) and was applied to my girlfriend’s mirror selfie. The digital manipulation and incorrect repetition of the image suggests a glitch or altering in the transfer of visual information, perhaps in an alternate context, with different equipment or software, the image would appear ‘correct’ or more real.
Come browse our extensive collection of unbelievable stupid laws in Australia
I’m interested to see how the law will evolve in the future, especially in regards to the monitoring and controlling of people in a posthuman state.
The law is supposed to evolve with humanity, as changes in context need to result in a change of legislation outlining what actions are prohibited and in what ways humanity can benefit society. This link shows a few outdated laws irrelevant to Australian society.
What I want to explore more, is how the government is supposed to control an abstract post human state such as the internet. In websites such as 4chan, individuals have no identity, and often through hacking what they say and do online can not be tracked. This relates heavily back to the declaration of the independence of cyberspace, as the laws traditional means of controlling and reprehending individuals are no longer constant.
Moving forward I am going to investigate the multidimensional nature of this situation. This will involve learning how individuals will use this abstract space to rebel from control, and how the government plans to evolve to control a space such as this.

Online UNSW terrorist threats, an example of the power individuals have from setting their mind and conciousness free from their physical body, while also demonstrating the methods the government used to counter this break in the law.
On October 12th, individuals on the website 4chan, anonomously made threats about plotting a terrorist activities in UNSW. This information was leaked to the public as seen in the first image. The graphic and distressing content was available for everyone to see for the entire duration of the security threat, however only now when I tried to look at the website again, it had become blocked.
This demonstrates the power individuals entail in a post human state when they are free from physical consequences. Additionally, the nature of this threat showed the government responded in a physical way (through sending police to the UNSW campus), however in an online space it took several days or longer for them to hide the graphic content.
This reveals the changing nature of governing in a contemporary time, and following social trends, it’s easy to speculate at a future where the government may lose control of monitoring and controling. Or the government may use this situation as a sense of emergency and have a totalitarian crack down on all forms of online rebellion. This has been demonstrated in China with their strict legislation and policies, prohibiting users from accessing sites such as Facebook.
A model for how China creates a firewall, essentially having absolute control over the internet in their country.
Initial experiment with advertising in futuristic context. This experiment uses Ridley Scott’s Bladerunner as a stimulus and explores the confusing mesh of futuristic cultures and new technology. The meaning is intended to be vague and indistinguishable (from our point of view).
Assessment 3 - Initial Research pt. 2
Afrofuturism
- investigations into the history and culture of Afrofuturism and it’s development in pop culture. Sun Ra’s acid jazz to the modern future funky Hip Hop of Outkast. A movement with a solid conceptual base and a wide range of writings and works exploring alternative futures through different cultures and contexts.

Stelarc and the Post Human
- Stelarc’s Muscle Machine is a six legged robot that receives directions via a human controllers movements. The machine uses rubber muscles to contract and extend, unifying the machines movement with that of the human inside it. Much of Stelarc’s work revolves around these mechanical additions to the human form, described in this instance as a process that “extends the body” and creates a situation in which “it is no longer applicable to ask whether the human or machine is in control”.
Razorcake’s Punk Zine Archive
- Rising to prominence in the early 1970′s, Punk Zines provide an interesting aesthetic for distributing information and ideas in a pdf format. Associated with DIY and rock subcultures, Punk Zines provided a format for forward thinking socio political art and culture, and as a result could be easily incorporated into our PDF work. A digital recontextualisation of this format could provide some interesting new ideas or art pieces for our final COFA work.

Facing the question of what content should be included in a publication which depicts the media and information sources of the future, I decided to conduct an experiment of determining what I actually look most online.
This experiment highlights the mundane and ineffective research and productivity in 24 hours. The websites jump from ambiguous google searches such as “the future art” to a creepy amount of views on facebook photos, and sadly resigning to “family guy full episodes”
This experiment gives solid insight into how easily humans can be distracted from their tasks and how pop-ups and advertisements can take people off task. For the pdf, I’d like to mimic this aesthetic through constant pop ups and distractions in the media you are trying to intake. This should create a non-linear and disruptive viewing of the publication, which through following online trends, seems to be the most contemporary way of absorbing information.
Assessment 3 - Initial Research
As a basis for exploring all the world’s futures we began by gathering a large database of ideas and works.
The Founding and Manifesto of Futurism - F.T. Marinetti
- our initial ideas revolved around using futurist materials and usurping their original intentions. ie. creating an un-Futurist manifesto and utilising its form to debase key fascist and misogynistic tendencies.
My Body is Browser Friendly - unknown
- experiments with the idea of posthuman and digital identity. Using the webpage and html as a creative form, both visually and intellectually.
Usage of interactive programming to communicate meaning. Early 2000′s and modern computer graphics. Retro futuristic visualisation, vaporwave and internet visual phenomenon.
Code Academy - Html Basics
HTML code as the basis for the design of webpages, a modern form of manifesto and the medium through which most people intake information. It is viable that in a futuristic context the use of HTML will become even more widespread. Through the digitisation or technological transformation of the human it could become the only way in which we interpret text.
