It bums me out every time. Whether I’m at school, a bar, or some random stranger on the street asks me the dreaded question about my preference in music, i always want to run away. Sometimes I think about lying and just saying that I’m not into music, but the truth is that I like metal. That’s right, soak it up. Imagine me head banging to Korn, getting down to Slipknot, or lurking around like some long haired creep while listening to some other terrible ass “metal” band. There have been countless times that when I’ve offered my answer of “I listen to metal” that some turd has informed me that they are also a fan of Seether or a similar band.

I’m proud of being a fan of metal. It’s kind of like understanding something that no one else will ever fully understand. But the truth is, being lumped into what every Taylor Swift listening brat thinks of a “metal head” can be embarrassing. I’m tired of having to explain that I listen to “good” metal. I’m not a satanist, I don’t bite the heads off of bats, I don’t get ultra violent at shows, and I certainly don’t disregard other genres of music. I do admit that many of the bands I listen to may have some negative or off-color lyrics and beliefs. That being said, a good portion of my music library is made up of positive, inspiring or even Christian bands, even though I am not a Christian myself, see how that works?

Metal, when done right, can be a beautiful and elegant sounding creation. Yeah sure, a lot of it sounds aggressive and intimidating, but think of the aggression as passion instead of hate and fear. Stop lumping anyone that listens to metal into a singular category of freaks and fiends. Do however, continue shunning ICP fans. They are the real bane of society. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to go apply a death mask of face paint and put on a skin tight mesh tee shirt and a pair of assless chaps to prepare for the sacrifice of a virgin…
