Inspired by my walking past a home built in 1754 in my new neighborhood, which isn't even the oldest building in the city. As someone born and raised in the Western US (where we do have some very old buildings, contrary to popular belief, just not in the middle of most cities), it made me curious!

When was the oldest extant building you can reasonably walk to from your home built?

The whole area I live in was built in the 1800s, there's definitely older bits in my town, but I don't think I could be arsed to walk that far. It's certainly doable, I just don't want to.

I'm skeptical of these results. For example, 8.4% for still-usable buildings from 10th century or before seems high. Most structures made before 1000 AD are either ruins or not near a ton of people. There are lots of exceptions, of course, but the question is how many people nearby are Tumblr users who voted on this poll?

I know this is a humorous exaggeration designed to show how silly it is to deny medication and mobility/quality of life aids to disabled people by applying the argument to something silly in a way that nobody would ever do but... unfortunately I have heard people say this. I've heard people suggest that people with minor sight problems shouldn't get glasses, and people needing to move to a stronger prescription should do it and should stay on as light a prescription as they can use and still function, because the glasses will "weaken their eyes" and make their eyesight worse (which is bullshit). People will pull this ableist bullshit on glasses wearers, too.

I think what bothers me about AI chat bots more than anything else is just like, my whole life what I've wanted most is human connection. I'm in my 30s and I still find it so hard. I still feel so on edge around people because of trauma and autism and just having too many bad experiences. But I just want to talk to people and get to know people and be around people. I want to hear what people think. I want to tell people about my thoughts.

And then AI chat bots start being a thing and it's just like. This is not that. This is none of that. None of it is real. Why do people want this. Why does anyone want this. It's just breaking my brain.

I'm sad to say that the rise of fascism has been visible in my inbox for years as people become increasingly distrustful of their own bodies and pleasure. you see it in people's paranoia around becoming "porn addicts," their need for reassurance that a 24 year old isn't a predator for dating a 22 year old, their fears that they may have unwittingly committed assault by looking at another child's naked body when they were young, their insistence that consensual sex is impossible for anyone who has had a single drink or smoked a whiff of weed. people, especially young people, are doing a tremendous amount of work for fascism in terms of rigorously policing their own bodies and sexual expression, and they often don't even realize it.
