Predator

In hindsight, it was the stupidest idea Brock has ever had.

Sitting still now, finally still after all those years of endless action, staring at his own empty grave, he can see the line of events that had led him right here clearly.

It was hauteur that led him this path, and it had been caused by staying alive at the ripe age of forty-seven. But hauteur alone wouldn’t have been enough. At the time, he’d thought he was courageous and heroic; others thought he was insane. 

It was none of those things. Brock had been plainly, painfully bored.

When Jack comes back to awareness the sound of voices fills the room, he opens his eyes slowly and the first thing he can distinguish is the blurry outline of Brock standing over him, he's talking to him. It sounds muffled. Like he's talking through the water. Then Jack tries to focus in the movement of his mouth to give some meaning to the sounds, but it's pointless. Mindless noise, that's all.

Brock is looking ragged by the end of their op. He’s been unusually quiet and terse since their dispatch twenty-seven hours ago. Judging by the date on the calendar, Jack knows why. Brock always gets lethargic during his heat.

Jack tries to escape from Hydra, and Brock goes after him to stop him before Pierce realises what's going on. Things go south and Jack ends up getting shot.
