HAZEL: because food or just because ya like me that much?
HAZEL: okay, well in that case i'm kinda a saint for wakin' you up.
HAZEL: seven /months/, hon, i'm pullin' your leg. if i was openin' the shop and had already been for a swim at seven in the mornin' i think i'd need someone to force me to take a week off. or i'd need an exorcism.
HAZEL: i know, babe. plus, i just woke ya up. but we made it. that's somethin'.
ROXIE: Just because I like ya that much.
ROXIE: A bit... It needs to get done. [sigh]
ROXIE: ...
ROXIE: Oh... right. [snorts, laughs a little, still sounds rather dozy]
ROXIE: 'Made it' makes it sound like we're on a survival show. [snorts] We did, though. Should I let ya off so ya can get the shop ready?
kimjaeshinâ:
jae wet his lips and he leaned back against the bar, drink in hand and he looked over at roxi as she spoke and he offered a smile. âno i donât think you have a shrill voice. itâs different than most around here.â he let out a chuckle at her words and nodded his head. âwell itâs good you know you look good.â he looked down at himself. âmaybe i will, i usually do look like a scruff, huh?â he laughed again unable to help himself. jae looked around and he shook his head speaking of woman he shrugged. ânot to my knowledge, .â he breathed, he didnât think there was anyway he hadnât been paying attention. wetting his lips he took a drink and he nodded. âgirlfriend, right. where is she?â he asked, wondering why she was standing with him and not with her girlfriend. though he was sure sheâd said male date last time in the bar, he decided not to mention it. he finished off his drink and he looked down at her. âyou want to go out to the dance floor with an old man?â he asked letting out a laugh.Â
âDifferent than most in a good or bad way?â Her inquiry was genuinely curious with a hint of teasing, smiling back at him and taking another sip of her drink, looking down at her dress and brushing a few wrinkles out. Despite it not really being her type of style, she did feel as if she looked good- if not a little ridiculous in a dress this low to the floor. âOh, ya so do not look like a scruff!â she protested with a gasp, smacking him on the arm lightly, rolling her eyes, not actually irritated, âYa just... ya know, look like ya kinda rolled outta bed anâ accepted your fate.â Laughing at her own joke, she glanced around at the sea of people, wondering how not even one person here was looking for his affections. After all, he was a gentleman and a nice guy, she couldnât fathom how someone wasnât practically flinging themselves at him. âOh, my girlfriend? I think sheâs over there talkinâ to her friends... Sheâs a tattoo artist, I donât know if ya would know her.â Pointing in her general direction, she pursed her lips, looking for a way to describe what she looked like. âSheâs the girl with the half purple-ish hair. Kinda ombre. Am I makinâ sense?â Looking up at him, she took another drink from her glass, finishing it and setting it on the bar. Giving him a smirk that spelled trouble, she held out her hand, pouting her lower lip. âYa tellinâ me youâre gonna turn down a pretty lady for a dance? Of course I do! Get your party on,â she enthused, knowing that a slow dance was hardly a party but still wanting to get him out of his zone regardless.

hazelâs hands lift upwards to prove her innocence, surrendering. âlookinâ ainât touchinâ,â she says simply, understanding. theyâre on the same page. it seemed smart, even; rushing into bed the moment theyâre back in eachotherâs lives wasnât something either of them wanted to do, and hazel ( quite frankly ) could see it ending in disaster. that was once the farthest their relationship went ( or, at least thatâs what they told themselves ) and allowing it to be a part of their relationship now theyâre actually in a relationship is something that canât be rushed. itâs wise. two months in, and hazelâs still content with it. she, herself, wouldnât stop anything from âgoing too farâ at this point, like she wouldâve in the beginning, but she isnât bothered by the lack of sex. theyâll get there when theyâre ready, and hazelâs perfectly happy making the most of everything else she had to live without before she could call roxie her girlfriend. though roxieâs gum-smacking should drive her up the wall, hazelâs learnt to tune it out over the years, and she simply smirks at roxieâs reflection in the mirror, before her expression melts into a dramatic, childish pout as the ball isnât deemed a special enough occasion for the type of attire that roxie would be most comfortable in ( hazel would have no complaints, either ) but she knows itâd hardly be appropriate, especially as roxieâs actually attending this shindig for work. âhey, dancinâ with youâs the only reason iâm goinâ,â she protests playfully, the joking tone to her voice making it very clear that she knows that roxie knows thatâs not true; sheâs going because roxie asked, and itâs that simple. sheâs proving again that her closeted status truly is a complex and nonsensical matter, especially as sheâs not even taking the masks theyâll be wearing into consideration, but it hardly matters. she fully appreciates the understanding and consideration from roxie, on a more serious note, as itâs hardly like sheâs used to her less-than-wonderful days being catered for. having not seen that being a human disaster has lead to her mascara smudging already, her eyebrows furrow briefly as roxie crouches to reach her level, but she canât help but let out a laugh as she reveals why sheâs joined her down here. because youâre a mess, hazel. âi only just did it ! howâs it smudged already ?â she protests rhetorically, but lets her eyes flutter to a close to let roxie clear the smudge away. she wouldnât be able to answer if asked how she knows roxieâs leaning in to steal a kiss once sheâs done, she just does, kissing her softly in return. her eyes only open as roxie pulls away, and she thanks her again for curling her hair as she flicks it behind it, letting it fall down her back and messing it up just a tad in the process, making the curls look a little less rigid and perfect, before spritzing perfume onto her wrist and absentmindedly rubbing her opposite one against the spot, before letting the bottle clink back into place on the dresser. âmm, youâve got a job yâcan have a drink at. youâre livinâ most peopleâs dream,â she says as she brings herself to her feet, knowing sheâll have to be careful in this dress until sheâs got her shoes on; sheâs fairly certain it was made for someone a little taller than herself. fingertips gently gliding up roxieâs arm as hazel looks up at her ( yes, up. those shoes are working wonders, as they often do ) she canât help but wonder if theyâve got a little bit of time to kill, as apparently the soft but brief kiss to her lips moments ago wasnât enough. âi havenât even properly said hello to ya yet.â
A smile quirked Roxieâs lips when Hazel surrendered her hands, not saying anything in response, knowing they mutually understood one another. At least Hazel respected her in that aspect. Not that she would have assumed otherwise in any way, it was just unusual in comparison to the other relationships that Roxie had been in throughout her life then again, they were all men. Right now, she doesnât want sex; she was content just being in a relationship and being happy about that. It still seemed like a dream come true she hadnât quite grasped from the moment it happened, still coming down from that high. Not missing the pout that Hazel gave her in the mirror, she rolled her eyes and briefly lifted one hand to flip her off, returning to her business as she attempted to perform her best work on someone other than herself. The hot curlers would have made them look nicer, in her opinion, especially on hair such as Hazelâs. Too late now. Maybe another time. Smirking slightly at her joke, she figured she might have to think on a dance when she looked down at the shoes Hazel was going to be wearing. âI think ya better make sure ya arenât gonna sprain your ankles first, babe. I donât wanna be the cause of ya goinâ home to chill with a bag of ice. Iâm a good slow dancer, though,â she replied honestly this time, shrugging her shoulders. It wasnât really a talent. She couldnât even recall who she had gone to her high school dance with, admittedly. Once she had gotten around to wiping the mascara from Hazelâs face, she snorted when she protested in regards to the mascara. Mascara was a finicky creature and she didnât blame her for already having messed it up; she wouldnât be able to count on one hand how many times she had stabbed herself in the eye with the mascara brush. Humming and fluffing her own hair when she was back on her feet, she turned away from the mirror as she fixed the wrinkles from her dress, sweeping a strand of blonde curls from her face. Looking over her shoulder when Hazel spoke again, she chuckled and shook her head. âNo, most peopleâs dream would be to be a wine taster, anâ Iâm definitely not a wine taster. Iâd love to be- maybe in another life where Iâm actually filthy rich.â Distracted by the feeling of fingers creeping up her arm, she focused her attention on her girlfriendâs face, shaking her head and rolling her eyes, complaining, âYa really are insatiable, ya know that?â Leaning in, she gave her a proper kiss this time, allowing it to linger before pulling away slowly. They didnât need to get distracted. âThere. A proper hello. Iâll only give ya another if ya put your shoes on, donât make me late.â Squeezing her waist, she nodded toward the heels that had been left out.

kimjaeshinâ:
jae smiled down at her, and he adjusted his own mask. he really hated these things and he looked down at roxi with a raised brow as she smirked. âyeah i recognised your voice first. my apologies.â he laughed and he rolled his eyes. âyou do not have a shrill voice. actually itâs quite charming.â he winked and he looked around again, glancing at her as she fluffed her curled and he nodded. âi feel you on that, butit doesnât mean you donât look good all dressed formal.â his laugh was louder than he meant it to be. âwell iâm glad to see that someone noticed thatâs what i was going for. a younger look.â he joked and he took a drink and then watched some people dance, and others as they spoke amongst each other. âi came alone, i did drop my friends girlfriend off.â he scanned the crowd for sunny, spotting her and he pointed. âsheâs over there but iâm sure her boyfriend should be here any minute.â he shrugged. he didnât mind coming alone, he knew minseo was here somewhere too. âwhat about you? you come alone?â he asked looking down at her with a raised eyebrow. ânot that thereâs much fun in this thing. if iâm alone i can go home at some point.â he laughed.Â
The masks were definitely not her favorite part of the event, nor the dress code, but she could deal with it until it was over. After all, she was here to do her job and nothing more. Having a little fun was just a bonus. âYa donât think I have a shrill voice? I think itâs at least loud enough to make my presence known like the queen I am,â she teased in her thick New York-British accent, âOh, I know I look amazinâ, sweetheart, donât even start- I look like a real princess. I think Iâd look pretty in just about anythinâ. You definitely do look young, by the way, maybe you should dress up like that more often. It makes ya look dignified.â Sipping her drink now that she had settled at the table, she surveyed the people around again. She was being extra attentive; this event was busy and it would be busy enough that people could slip right by if she wasnât paying close enough attention. Looking back to him when he mentioned he had dropped his friendâs girlfriend off, she raised her brows over her mask and smiled, nudging him with her elbow. âWow... What a gentleman, as always. Ya tellinâ me thereâs not one girl here whose got her eye on ya? Theyâre missinâ out if not. Iâm here with my girlfriend.â It occurred to her she had mentioned having a male date when they had first met, but it had been a few weeks now and hopefully that was enough time to not make that seem suspicious. She didnât want to hide the fact she was dating someone. âNot much fun? Well, weâre gonna have to change that, maybe ya should hit the dance floor with me.â
lcsbicasâ:
âi hate you so much,â hazel mutters, perhaps sounding the least genuine sheâs ever managed to sound. in fact, thereâs a distinct level of fondness in her voice as she faffs around with the dress. so unfazed by being in her underwear around roxie, it doesnât even cross her mind that itâs something to be registered until she catches roxieâs eyes on her, and she finds herself smirking. itâs hardly new for them, despite paths of a more sexual nature not being journeyed down since being in a relationship. even without that aspect, itâs not like either of them have been hiding; roxie even sat with her while she had a bath after, in her own words, shit hit the fan with dusty a few months back, and itâs hardly like hazelâs suddenly shy whenever they stay at eachotherâs apartments. as smug as it makes her feel, she does need to get dressed, and she slips the dress over her head in a second attempt to put the damn thing on, and she fiddles with the skirt so it sits right, before holding up the top of the dress around the bust so roxie can zip her into it. once she does so, she outstretches her arms, wiggling her fingers, and resists the urge to start to spinning. as against this evening and this type of dress as she might usually be, she does feel pretty cute. âthanks, babe,â she says, before planting herself down in front of the dresser with a sigh, and not quite catching the already slightly smudged mascara in the corner of one eye. she decided against lipstick; she always makes a mess of it somehow, and sheâd rather not end up with it on her teeth tonight. her eyes roll playfully after catching roxie looking back at her in the mirror, a slight smirk on her own lips, too, and it only grows as she expresses what sheâd rather be wearing. form fitting and sexier. well, hazel wouldnât argue with that. âyeah ? i think iâd like that too,â she teases, smirking at her in the mirror before playfully scrunching her nose up at her. she could argue that formal can still be sexy, and she could argue that roxie still looks sexy, but sheâs pretty sure the latter goes without saying. as sheâs about to protest to her paying if she wants anything else later, mouth opening to speak and all, roxie adds the no ifs, ands, or buts, and hazel shuts her mouth, simply responding with a glare that is 100% playful. itâs fair enough, as she knows that her girlfriend probably knows that sheâs not overly keen on going, and she supposes she should start trying to put her hair in its place. however, roxie seems to have the same idea, and hazel can only offer her a grateful smile, shoulders relaxing a little as she gives a tiny, appreciative nod. sheâs a godsend. âfreakinâ exhausted, if iâm honest. iâll be alright once iâm there,â she decides, not overly sure if itâs true. theyâll have fun though, either way, and if hazelâs head didnât currently need to be still, sheâd shake it in response to the curls not being exactly how hazel would do it herself. âas long as itâs curly, iâm happy,â she assures, knowing that roxie doesnât even use a curler to achieve her own curled locks, so hazelâs happy with anything. especially as sheâs more than likely to mess it up a little when theyâre done anyway, just so she feels as much like herself as she can in a floor-length dress and shoes taller than god knows what. âyou had an okay day, though ?â
Roxie let out an impish giggle in response to her remark, flouncing over to her and giving her a wink. She knew that Hazel would have rather just not gone to the event and she did appreciate her girlfriend taking one for the team to go with her. She would have to buy her a gift as a thank you for coming to the event with her, figure out something special. That smugness on Hazelâs face isnât something that she missed while she was busy looking her over, shaking her head at her and quipping, âDonât get any ideas.â She wasnât ready yet, that much went unspoken. Now that they were trying to have a relationship, she wasnât sure she would be ready for sex until or if, as she couldnât really fathom Hazel ever having that level of feeling for her back somehow theyâre in love. It sounded like some mushy straight-out-of-the-movies bullshit but that was how she felt in the here and now. Her feelings had been hurt before and she wanted some semblance of security that she wouldnât be hurt again before she put that much of herself out there over again- something like that. Perhaps she was being too cautious but she thought it was fair. Roxie had become guarded in the past year or so, outside of the secrets that she already had in her life. âNo problem,â she said as she finished zipping up the dress and began to curl her hair once she had sat down, smacking the gum in her mouth noisily. She was never quiet when she did anything- she always had to be talking or making some kind of noise, generally carrying that energy about her. The vibe of a confident woman, she supposed. âShut up,â she said with another smirk, shaking her head again, âI only wear that type of shit for a special occasion or if Iâm feelinâ it. This occasion is not that special.â Besides, she would have to dig it out of her closet and find some sexy pantyhose to go with it. That wasnât really job appropriate, as much as it would make her happy. âYeah, maybe youâll feel better there. Ya might see some of your friends and there will be plenty of places to sit, doll. We donât have to dance if ya donât want to. Itâs up to you, hon.â It doesnât make a difference to her; Roxie didnât consider herself to be that great of a dancer outside of exotic dancing. Finishing off the curls, she didnât miss the smudge of mascara on Hazelâs face in the mirror and turned off the curler, unplugging it and setting it on the dresser before moving around to face her, crouching down. âLet me fix this smudge on your face, though, ya look silly,â she commented, giving her a fair warning as she brought her thumb to the corner of Hazelâs eye to wipe it away, leaning in to steal a brief kiss to her lips. Finding a tissue to clean her thumb off with, she straightened her posture and shrugged, making a face. âAs okay as it could be... Glad Iâm not workinâ a club tonight. Lookinâ forward to the open bar at the ball.â
Rita Hayworth in Gilda (1946), dir. Charles Vidor
what's your favorite thing about roxie?
âchrist on a bike. start easy, why donât ya ? i⌠could get really mushy and gross and say that ainât fair because thereâs a lot of things i love about roxie, and thatâs true, but⌠she will go out and get whatever she wants. if she wants it, sheâs gonna chase it, and fight for it, and work real hard to get it. thatâs another one, she works hard, no matter what. but if thereâs somethinâ she wants, sheâll find a way to make it happen. and, uh, she has this â like, this unshakeable confidence. even if sheâs bullshittinâ somethinâ you will never know it, âcause she does everythinâ with this air of confidence that makes ya feel like sheâs got everythinâ covered and under control. and i love how thoughtful she is. sheâd suffocate me in my sleep before i could publicly say she was sweet, but she is thoughtful. and itâs just the little things. she makes people feel cared about. and when she talks to people, she actually listens, and takes in the shit theyâre saying, because a lot of the time she actually does find it interestinâ. i dunno, she talks to ya, and yâfeel important. and watchinâ her do it with people that donât even know her yet⌠itâs weird, âcause that was me. a millionâ fuckin years ago, but even so. sheâs just magnetic. people are drawn to her. and god, when she cares about somethinâ, she cares. thereâs so much passion there. sheâs incredible. sheâs such a beautiful, complex, fuckinâ interestinâ person. people donât know her like i do. she can get through anythinâ, and sheâs proven it. sheâs one of the strongest people i know. that â thatâs it. thatâs my favourite thing about her. sheâs strong. ridiculously so.â

Do you have any misgivings about the future of your relationship with Roxie?
âi⌠am cautiously optimistic in general, i think. with this. the further it goes, the less cautious and the more optimistic it is, but â yeah, i dunno. if i was full of, yâknow, doubts and worries and whatever then obviously iâd talk to her about it instead of just sittinâ here tellinâ yâall instead, but no, i think any apprehension in the beginning was just to be expected, given the circumstances, and the fact i hurt her before, and shit got real messy when nobody wanted it to, but thereâs nothinâ that comes to mind. iâm happy, yâknow ? weâre happy. itâs goinâ good for us for once, and i think after eight years we kinda fuckinâ deserve it. whateverâs happeninâ, itâs good. we thought weâd see where it goes, and it lead us to a proper relationship, and itâs one weâre willinâ to fight for; even if somethinâ did pop up, weâd figure it out between us. itâs our business, yâknow ? i donât think itâd be overly healthy if i was sat here thinkinâ about every single doubt about us in the future instead of, i dunno, doinâ somethinâ about it. but i donât feel like weâre doomed, or like itâs gonna end in disaster â we were both just worried that it might, but i donât feel like it will. does⌠that even make sense ?â
kimjaeshinâ:
jae was still looking at his drink. was it wrong that he would much rather be over by the bar than actually mingling with people? he was still trying to see if he could see sunny but he didnât have much luck which made him wonder if maisy or minho or even noah had shown up but he wasnât certain.  he looked at the sea of people and he wet his lips inwardly cringing because he despite working in a bar just wasnât used to these types of things. had he been a lawyer like heâd been pushed towards growing up jae wondered if heâd have been at big social gatherings like this had he actually done it. he turned his head again when the woman spoke and he raised an eyebrow and he laughed. âitâs the mask.â he pointed. âi told you iâm an old man and my eyesightâs getting really bad.â he teased and he smiled. âhello though, you look absolutely stunning.â it was the honest truth she did and jae gave a slight bow. âthank you very much.â he watched her gesturing to the table she was at and he nodded. âyeah actually if you donât mind?â he asked lifting the drink to his lips to take a drink.Â
The mask. Oh, right. She had completely forgotten she was wearing one, to be honest. Fixing it on her face and giving a little laugh, she smirked and accepted the martini from the bartender. âCompletely forgot I was wearinâ one. My voice kinda gives it away though, I think. I got a mixed accent anâ a shrill voice. Makes it hard to ignore me.â More or less, anyway. Licking her lips after she took a sip of her martini, chuckling when he called himself an old man. âAw, câmon, darlinâ, youâre hardly old as ya look. This is a ball, arenât ya havinâ any fun?â Walking over to her table with him and taking a seat, she fixed her dress and brushed her fingers through her curls, fluffing them again. âMe? Stunninâ? I actually feel like Iâm wearinâ somethinâ too formal. I would have preferred a lilâ more class. Or somethinâ sexier. The event is too formal for either of those. Ya look great, though! That tux knocks ten years off ya, old man.â Smirking and taking a drink from her glass again, she set it aside, returning her gaze to the people scattered around the building for a moment and scanning for who she was looking for. Nowhere in sight. Hm. âDid ya come here alone or did ya bring a date? I havenât seen ya hit the floor yet, so Iâm assuminâ the answer to be a big olâ no.â Returning her attention to him, she smiled and clasped her hands together on the table. Honestly, she wasnât as much fun these days as she made out- that rowdy lifestyle of hers was long since over. This was hardly a party that would take her back to the good old days from her youth.
lcsbicasâ:
admittedly, hazel wouldnât be attending tonight if it wouldnât make roxieâs job that little bit easier; sheâll simply look like sheâs there to have fun, instead of to do her job, though hazelâs sure that the former will also take place. although, she has to admit that sheâs not exactly in the party mood, nor is a masquerade ball something sheâd usually see herself attending, but when in rome. as roxie lets herself into the apartment upon her arrival, hazel is ( as her mother would say ) faffing around her room half naked trying to do eight things at once, and thanking the god she doesnât believe in that roxie will be here to help zip her into her dress. her first attempt to get into it had been unsuccessful, leading to her discarding it on the bed. in fairness, itâs a nice dress â itâs not one that hazel feels entirely at home in, despite often feeling most comfortable in a dress, but she still feels like herself ( in princess form, maybe ) when zipped into the damn thing; itâs just a little ( a lot ) longer and a tad ( a hell of a lot ) more formal than sheâs used to, and she doesnât have hands coming out of her back. âiâm in the bedroom !â hazel calls as she hears roxieâs voice. she didnât intend to be in her underwear when her girlfriend wandered her way into the room, but thatâs very much the situation at hand either way, and at this current moment in time, hazel doesnât give even half a ratsâ ass. âhey,â she greets, voice a little softer as she catches roxie out the corner of her eye, her hand hovering over the curler sat atop the dresser to see if she kept it turned on, or turned it off while it wasnât in use like a smart person. needless to say, the latter wasnât the path she went down. âmmhm, could ya zip me into this dress ? itâs gonna be the death of me and my arms ainât eight feet long like it wants âem to be,â she asks, moving to faff around with the dress laid out on the bed, smoothing out the red and orange fabrics of the skirt. what exactly the point of doing so is when sheâs going to shoving it over her head in a matter of seconds, she has no idea, but thereâs a too much to do, and she feels like she constantly has to be doing something. hearing that roxie has a little time, though, is much of a comfort, and it isnât like the other woman seems to be in a rush to get out the door even if saying otherwise. letting her shoulders relax, she stands up a little straighter as her head finally lifts to look at roxie properly, and a slow grin begins to creep across her lips, eyes lighting up. well, damn. âjesus. you look beautiful,â though thatâs nothing new, she still sounds rather amazed, and she allows herself a moment to let her eyes wander over roxie in all her formal glory. âyou look so fuckinâ good. but yeah â yeah, i ate lunch late, so iâm good. runninâ around like a chicken with itsâ ass on fire, though, so itâs probably a good thing work was busy around lunch time and i didnât get to eat for a while. i wouldnât have had time, i donât think. i dunno what iâm doinâ with my hair, so iâm just going with curlinâ it, but the backâs been a pain,â itâs her go-to when sheâs not feeling her natural hair, or if it simply wonât cooperate, but at least her makeup is fully done and she wasnât totally naked when roxie arrived. at least thatâs something.Â
âDonât ya look like youâre just havinâ the time of your life?â She was only teasing and that seemed most appropriate given the circumstances and knowing that Hazel hadnât been too keen on going to the ball. Regardless, she was grateful that Hazel had decided to come with her, else she might feel a little exposed, especially with her blonde hair back in the mix. âI think youâre missinâ some clothes for goinâ out, though,â she continued to tease as she eyed her in her underwear, a familiar sight, though an older familiarity at this point. Still, the sight of Hazel in her underwear isnât one that Roxie could so easily forget, stepping forward and helping to zip up the dress, obliging easily. Once she had done so, she glanced at the curler resting on the dresser, returning her eyes to Hazelâs hair. Her compliments only made Roxie smirk, meeting her eyes in the mirror and snorting. âIf Iâm beinâ honest, I know that I look good. I would have preferred a skirt anâ a blouse over it more than a dress. This dress is too formal for my tastes. I would have liked somethinâ more form-fittinâ. Sexier than a formal dress.â Otherwise known as Victoriaâs Secret if they made dresses. âAh, quit gushinâ about how I look, I know I look good. Youâre free to have a lilâ somethinâ else at the ball if ya get hungry, that goes without sayinâ. Youâre the one that agreed to come to night, so Iâll also be the one payinâ for anythinâ ya want. No ifs, ands, or buts.â Fluffing her blonde hair in her hands and then running her fingers through Hazelâs hair, she made a face and picked up the curler. âI know Saturday is your busiest day, I sâpose youâre a lilâ tired, huh?â She didnât even ask whether Hazel wanted her to curl the back of her hair for her, deciding the way that she said it already implicated the question, beginning to work her magic on Hazelâs hair. âMy curlinâ is gonna look different than yours... I just do mine differently. Iâll try to get as close as possible to the way that ya have yours curled, no promises,â she said, humming as she did so, fluffing Hazelâs hair after she had finished with a strand of it. Perfect.

as the old saying goes, thereâs no better pairing than smoke inhalation and concussion. the longer roxieâs revelation has been out there, the more hazel can begin to accept it, and even begin to appreciate it ( despite the dangers that come with it ) and sheâs glad she was able to force the tears back in, and never allowed them to see the light of day. the tenseness is fading from the air, and hazel canât quite figure out if itâs because the news is settling in, or if itâs settling in because things are less tense, but it doesnât matter. either way, it allows her to smile as roxie confirms that the stuff of action movies isnât her everyday life. âoh, yeah, âm real disappointed. i was hopinâ that made me a bond girl,â hazel jokes, words dripping in playful sarcasm â and a slight tinge of disgust that she canât mask when it comes to the latter sentence, even in jest. sheâs glad that roxie can see how learning of her real job has allowed things to fall into place, especially when there had been things that hazel had questioned, things that didnât make sense to her, that are now crystal clear. an added bonus is the things she never even questioned, but now has the answers to anyway. itâs a funny old world they live in. with the events of today still lurking in her mind, and slowly beginning to have an affect on her, as hazel catches the way roxie smiles after pressing a kiss to the tip of her nose, she nearly mumbles something that she canât quite promise sheâd mean. it nearly slips out. but perhaps in the way sheâd casually say it to dusty ( all my love, aside ) or zane, and not in the way that roxie once said it to her. itâs be one way for things to go south right now, sheâs sure of it, but the way roxie smiled as hazel pulled away, that warm, comfortable feeling still spreading through her after they kissed, it simply just wanted to dance off her tongue. naturally, and without thought. sheâd glad it didnât, but the fact it wanted to causes her to pause for the briefest of moments. itâs no different, she decides, itâs no different to saying it to a friend; itâs just been a long day, and sheâs appreciative that roxieâs okay. itâs different to that because roxie means something more to her, and itâs finally official after all this time biting her tongue, keeping her thoughts and feelings to herself, and acting like every kiss and every touch meant nothing, but it still wouldnât be being said in the way that itâd be taken. theyâre together, she canât just say things like that. itâs been a month; she doesnât know anything anyway, even the thought of it sounds ridiculous. she canât help but grin as roxie giggles again, before playfully pouting at her as if the feather-light flap to her arm couldâve possibly hurt her, and shifting again as roxie shuffles over to make room. hands still locked together, hazel settles down next to roxie for the time being. âiâll probably have to go in a bit,â she mumbles, knowing she hadnât been granted much time. she canât see a clock, but she isnât terrible at estimating a length of time thanks to work, and she knows theirs must be running out. for now, she can make the most of it, and she wiggles her hand free from roxieâs so she can put her arm around her. âyeah, itâs a bit of a shift,â she agrees when it comes to her getting used to it. thatâs the thing about revealing a secret; someone else being in the know is always something that needs adjusting to, and hazel can understand that more than most. no more needing to lie, no more covering things up, having to accept that other people may bring it into conversation sometimes. hazel can understand that although roxieâs relieved that someone knows, it might need time to settle. âiâm still gonna need a while to let it sink in, too, i think. iâll probably wake up tomorrow and need a second to know if that actually happened or it was just a smoke-infused dream i had, but iâll get used to it,â sheâs mostly kidding. âweâll figure it out. iâm glad yâtold me. and hey, if nothinâ else, itâs given me another reason to think youâre badass as hell. plus⌠i dunno, itâs good stuff. what you do. itâs somethinâ to be proud of,â despite the badass comment being said with a lighter air surrounding it, hazel softens as she continues, before nodding as roxie speaks on her father. that little innocent smile will be the death of her, and she canât help but smile gently in return. heâs had enough heartbreak, and hazel understands. thatâs fair enough. why worry him if itâs not necessary, especially when that familyâs been through enough. when it comes to family, though, sheâll speak no further; she knows better than to ask about her brother. ââs fair enough, rox. yâhave such a good heart, yâknow that ?â she says, before rolling her eyes at herself, even though her expression is still soft. ââ sorry, iâm mushy today. dusty learnt that one the hard way earlier, the poor guy. but hey, if ya ever need somethinâ drawn up to pass off as your own if he asks, i can probably draw somethinâ up. iâm good with secrets, and good with a pencil.âÂ
It had been a long day and Roxie knew this was a vast amount to take in and she would rather that her girlfriend take the time to allow it to sink in before she just started tossing questions. Once she had composed herself and they were both out of the hospital, they could talk properly about it. Right now, what they both needed was rest, which reminded Roxie that they were on the clock. She should check her phone soon. Another little laugh escaped her at the James Bond joke, defending, âListen, no matter how much of a womanizer he is, Daniel Craig was fuckinâ cute. Still is, too bad heâs leavinâ. I should send him a love note.â She was only teasing, of course, as she was pretty sure the enigmatic Rachel Weisz and their newly welcomed daughter wouldnât be big fans of a secret admirer. Her words were spoken with a tired drawl beginning to sink in, the exhaustion of the day that she had just endured and her headache starting to make her tired. Hazel seemed to want to say something after they kissed and in the silence that fell between them for several moments, she found herself thankful that whatever it was, Hazel hadnât said it. Another big conversation wasnât needed for the day and where things were was, to be put simply, perfect or as close to it as possible. Not perfect, given the circumstances, just casual. Nothing was too pressing now that the tension had settled and she found herself more relaxed, feeling that the weight on her chest had finally been lifted. There were still other demons lurking in the waters of their relationship namely, the fact that Roxie was still in love with her but they didnât have to come to light today. Right now, Roxie just wanted to enjoy what was going on between them and take it as it were. âAh, yeah,â she murmured, deciding she would check her phone in a moment and if it was high time for Hazel to scoot out of the room, she would urge her to leave before a nurse came in and lectured the both of them. For now, she was comfortable with Hazel settling down beside her, giving her a few minutes to relax and put her arm around her, closing her eyes and feeling how much better it was for her headache when she had her eyes closed, letting out a sigh and nodding. A shift was an understatement, but she didnât deem it wise to just point that out. She got the message. âWell, when ya come to your senses anâ if ya have any more questions, youâre free to ask me after Iâm feelinâ less like my head is about to burst, doll. Iâm glad I could tell ya too. It took me a while, felt like the right moment when ya were over for dinner... then it kinda wasnât. We arenât the best at timinâ, ya know,â she replied, a teasing hint to her voice as she nudged her. Being proud of her job went without saying- most people that worked for the federal level in some way were proud of their job the money-mongers aside. Her body was beginning to feel heavy now that she had closed her eyes for a few moments, opening them again when Hazel spoke in regards to her father, pursing her lips. Good heart was stretching it, in her opinion, though she wouldnât say it. Nevertheless, family was a touchy subject and she didnât wish to talk about it any further, still managing a chuckle at her offer. âNot necessary, I donât think we see each other enough... Speakinâ of mushy anâ Dustin, I think ya better get back up to your bed,â she said, shifting to check her phone and setting it back where it was, âMister Clock tells me itâs time for ya to get goinâ before the nurse bites us in the ass... Iâll see ya tomorrow, yeah?â Nudging her and giving her a little smile, she rubbed at her eyes, trying to keep them open for long enough that she didnât fall asleep on Hazel before she left. They could both use some rest, recuperate, and then regroup tomorrow and make plans for when Roxie checked out.
jae had entered the ball after leaving sunny, heâd actually felt bad for leaving her but heâd hoped someone else would be there soon but if not heâd go find her. she had said sheâd be fine but he wasnât sure. the first place jae had gone too was the food, he needed something to eat and while stuffing the first thing heâd picked up into his mouth he looked around, looking at all the people in masks enjoying themselves. it was a rare sight, this many people in one place but this was an event that didnât involve his bar that heâd closed for the night anyway. he decided now that heâd eaten something heâd go get a drink and he wandered over to the bar. he ordered his drink and then glanced to the side. âcan i buy you a drink?â he asked. he was being polite, a gentleman at least would, wouldnât they? then again he could be seen as being a creep. he cursed himself under his breath as the drink was handed to him.  âwhatever theyâre having too.â he hummed sliding the money across.Â

Roxie was only at this event on business, but that didnât mean she couldnât have fun at the same time. After all, the person she was looking for didnât appear to be attending not that she expected much out of little olâ Crownsville. They could always turn up at any point so she had to stick around until the end of the evening, then she could finally go home, report back and go to bed. If her hunch was correct, she would more than likely be passing out still in her dress and all. Socialization was exhausting when there were this many people around and while she was approachable and extroverted when she wanted to be, ballroom dances werenât what she pictured as her type of social. Nevertheless, while her girlfriend had gone off to speak with some of her friends, she found herself at the bar and debating if she wanted anything, her chin in her hand, perking up when someone she recognized came up beside her. Jae. Without taking much more than a look at her, he was asking her what she wanted to drink, not seeming to recognize her. âDonât I get a hello? Itâs your favorite girl from the bar!â she exclaimed, a wide grin plastering itself across her face, âGuess Iâm a lilâ hard to recognize in a dress anâ shit, arenât I? I donât normally wear dresses. Skirts are more my style. Ya look handsome, by the way, dear.â Winking at him and turning to the bartender, she ordered a martini, gesturing to the tables. âIâm sittinâ over that way, ya wanna join me?â

âKnock knock!â Roxieâs voice chirped in its typical natural loud, shrill volume as she entered the upstairs loft above Permanent Record. She had promised to come over and help Hazel with getting ready, already in her dress for the evening. She would have preferred to wear a skirt and a top more than she would have a formal dress; unfortunately, the event was formal and she had no other choice than to do so. Having already let Hazel know that she was on her way, she just took to letting herself in rather than knocking. After all, she should probably get there early to observe the people that were coming into the ball, rather than so many of them already being there and her struggling to do so after the crowd had already entered the building. With so many masks and people, it would be too hard. Of course, they were still going to have some fun too, but right now she needed to do her job, the reason she had moved here to begin with. Her six-inch stilettos clicking across the floor as she walked through and into her bedroom, peeping in, her curled hair- now bleached back to blonde- around her shoulders, she offered her girlfriend a friendly smile and a little wave. âCan I help ya with anythinâ so we can get out the door? I donât wanna rush ya either, Iâve got some time to spare before we gotta be down there.â Not too much time, just enough that if something came up and they had to focus their energy on problem-solving as Roxie wouldnât put past any incidents of someone getting their hair stuck in a brush, for example, it wouldnât be a big deal. âHave ya had anythinâ to eat? I think thereâs gonna be food there, just checkinâ.â

jae watched the woman walk off and he pursed his lips. he had no idea what had just happened and to be honest, had roxi not come in when she did things could have gotten worse. he laughed as roxi spoke and he nodded his head. âiâd be lost without you, or dead, as she so threatened me.â he laughed again and he turned to look at the drinks once heâd poured himself one he back to her and nodded. âcosmopolitan coming right up.â he turned making the drink up and then he brought it back to her handing it over. âi was a little bored.â he chuckled. âof course. not doing anything else plus the barâs.. pretty dead to be honest.â not that, that surprised him in the slightest. âwhat have you been up to since the last time i saw you?â he asked curiously.Â
Roxie was happy to come to the rescue of someone else plus, she was pretty sure it was part of her job description. Settling at the bar and resting her chin in her hand, her dark red lips quirking into a smirk as he playfully returned the banter. âI am almost a superhero, ya know. I work a few different jobs anâ come home at night anâ still cook dinner for myself. I could be a supermom if I had kids,â she teased as she sipped her drink, replying, âThank ya, darlinâ. I appreciate ya. Iâve had a shit day.â Not for any reason in particular; paperwork for her job was just a drag this time of year. For anyone else, the incoming winter would mean that work was slowing down- not for Roxie. For Roxie, it meant more trips away than usual for the holiday season. It took months of planning. âJust a lilâ bored? This place looks like a ghost town. No offense, guess nobody comes in here this time of night âcept the barflies,â she teased with a little smile still on her face, taking another sip of her drink before sitting back to pull her hair up in a ponytail, tilting her head as he inquired what sheâd been up to. Nothing special. âI actually spent all day cleaninâ, as attractive as that sounds. Nothinâ special- workâs work. I did go on a very brief shoppinâ spree. What about you, honey? I should give ya my phone number so we can go out anâ make our lives less borinâ.â
