Google Home, Alexa and the likes might have found a home, but are the privacy issues stemming out of using them worth the enhancements they provide?
lays out many potential privacy issues, although doesn’t really back up implication that the companies are actually yet doing these things

So apparently it has been possible this whole time to turn off crunchyroll subtitles via a left click menu? I don’t have a left mouse button! How am I supposed to figure that out! Why did they stand by as I suffered the indignity of taping stuff to my screen??
Where did you start learning Japanese in the language learning process? I'm in the process of currently trying to memorize kanji, hiragana, and katakana characters (not all at the same time of course). Plus, I'm not sure I'm quite understanding the connections between the three alphabets. I could just be over thinking things. I would've taken a language class to learn the basics, but I'm just not sure where to look to find them. Either way if you could help me out I'd appreciate it! Thanks!
Hello, thanks for asking. I didn’t learn Japanese in the most efficient way, and I have only vague memories of when I first started. If you are a total beginner, there are things like Duolingo or the Genki textbook series that may work well has a way to guide and structure your studies. However, I do have a few things I remember.
(btw, here’s a description of the differences between the alphabets)<-- I think if you don’t completely understand at this point, it’s okay, you’ll get it as you go.
- I didn’t realize this when I first started, but when you’re older than 4, learning a few dozen alphabetic symbols is actually pretty trivial? Like, you can famously learn the Korean alphabet in an hour. (Though retaining that knowledge is a different story.) So hiragana and katakana shouldn’t be much harder. Give a yourself couple days to a week to learn each. Here are some quizlets: https://quizlet.com/47772/katakana-practice-flash-cards/
https://quizlet.com/43205195/hiragana-flash-cards/
- Personally I think I learned katakana from making myself read the untranslated sound effects on D.Grey-Man scanlations lol
- I learned grammar by reading Tae Kim’s Guide to Japanese Grammar beginning to end a ridiculous amount of times. That method may or may not work for you. One useful thing I learned is that if I didn’t get a particular grammar point, sometimes it helped to read about the same topic another grammar book, where it might be phrased differently. If I really, really, didn’t get something, it turned out I figured it out later through repeated exposure anyway and it wasn’t worth the agony I put myself through.
- There are “lots of” kanji. I think I learned the meanings and pronunciations of the first 200 most common kanji characters by copying them down, flashcards etc. But the other few thousand I know I’ve learned through their use in vocabulary compounds. Which brings me to:
-You’ll want to memorize the 1000, then 2000, then 4000 most common vocabulary, as fast as possible. There’s a couple points in that stretch where you seem to be making magical leaps in understanding the things you try to read and listen to and it feels incredible.
I did that (with glacial slowness, over several years ) by using this flashcard program: https://apps.ankiweb.net/
And downloading decks of flashcards like these: https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/114060567.
If you search “Anki” in your smartphone’s app store, you can find smartphone versions. I found I started using it more reliably once I downloaded it onto my phone. I do my flashcards every day!
Sorry if this is kind of half baked. Please ask follow up questions if you need clarification. A lot of people on tumblr have written more clearly and comprehensively about learning Japanese from scratch. You can find some of them by googling “tumblr japanese resources masterpost”.
A list of things to practice your listening skills with, and to practice hearing the flow of Japanese, so as to better incorporate that in your own speaking (*•̀ᴗ•́*)و ̑̑
YouTube
LayerQ - gaming channel, speaks clearly.
Mitoku - gaming channel, speaks at a nice pace. I’m currently watching her Breath of the Wild LP!
Roa - gaming channel, speaks really fast, but she’s just so 元気 that it doesn’t matter that she’s hard to follow. I enjoy having her in the background.
Fonimu - plays a lot of JRPGs, but he is very relaxing to listen to, and polite.
日本語の森 - I’m sure you all know this one! Get Japanese explained to you in Japanese. They have dedicated channels for N3, N2, and N1.
Just Duncan - Japanese youtuber, with Japanese subtitles. It’s been a year since he uploaded anything, but I enjoy his sense of humor.
Shows
If you want to use shows for practicing listening, either a) listen with closed eyes, b) turn off subtitles, or c) put on Japanese subtitles.
野武士のグルメ - Samurai Gourmet. I swear, this is the cutest show in the world. Go find it and just feel the warmth of watching a sweet elderly man having lunch.
Japanese Style Originator - a show where the origins of Japanese concepts are explained, and some people have to make some guesses. The game part of it isn’t terrible interesting, and the music they use is obnoxiously loud, but I’ve learned some very interesting things!
Midnight Diner: Tokyo Stories - as far as I understand this is a live-action adaptation of a manga. I haven’t watched it yet.
Terrace House - Japanese reality show about 6 young people living in a house together.
Little Witch Academia - anime about a witch school. It’s kinda cute.
AJIN: Demi-human - significantly darker anime than the one listed above. This is the only one on the list without any kind of Japanese subs available.
Good Morning Call - drama about two classmates accidentally renting the same apartment. I haven’t seen this, but it looks like it caters to every romance trope in the best way possible.
Keep in mind that availability varies greatly depending on countries! The ones I’ve listed are available on Netflix Denmark, so I’m thinking they are also available in most of Europe and America as well.
Podcasts
ひいきびいき - a super relaxing podcast with hour long episodes feat. two Japanese people just talking about their days and anything and everything. I really like this one.
バイリングアルニュース - Bilingual News. A Japanese-speaking woman and an English-speaking man discuss recent events. This is easier to follow along with, because you have the context very clearly in English.
そのアニ - Discussions about anime entirely in Japanese.
自由なラジオ Light Up! - Politics, society, news, and stuff like that. Difficult Japanese, but there are transcripts, so you can practice reading with them as well!
天使のモーニングコール - A slower paced podcast meant to be relaxing, discussing lifestyle-related topics.
This is my uncle in 1984.

In general, this site seems to be a good source of nice, fluffy reading practice materials. :)
I don’t need 100% fluency I just need to be able to watch Netflix while folding laundry without looking at subtitles
10冊目!
I finished my 10th full length novel in Japanese!
I’m still pretty crap but I noticed that I will automatically start reading Japanese text that my eyes fall across without having to stop and change brain modes.
Good and relevant vocab of the week: ろれつ🍒
呂律 (ろれつ) - (a tongue-acrobatics-intensive way to say) verbal articulation
ex.:
呂律が回らない- being unable to speak clearly
