though obviously the use of ritualized religious spaces as a means to accumulate and cement power is classic in kingdoms/more princely spaces but in a Republic like Florence it was quite daring and distinct

(and this was going on before 1478 - though to a lesser degree. But Lorenzo's quasi "prince-ifying" himself and his brother is no small reason why 1478 happened to begin with. Granted that process began with Cosimo and the Cult of Youth that he really encouraged around his grandsons)
