âWhat?â Cora asked in simple confusion, worry plain on her features as he hands tried to look for if there was any physically wrong with her sister. âRosie, Iâm here. Iâm not leaving. What are you talking about?â Her voice was earnest, but she was trying her best to be calm. âRosie, pleaseâ are you hurt?â she asked again, realizing Rosie hadnât answered her the first time.
âYou left with him!â She said, the raw betrayal clear in her voice. âYou picked dad over me.â She knew it was her dreams that had spurred Cora into her decision, but they were coming from the man that had left them both. âI saw you... I heard you. Stop pretending, you canât take it back.â

Heâd never seen Rosie even near anything like this, and that only worried him more. The girl had seemed entirely fearless, so what could have possibly rendered her into this state? Gunnarr followed her over, crouching down to her level with deep concern on his features. âWho left?â he asked softly in a voice that was often reserved for when Ingrid came scampering into his room after a nightmare. Tentatively, he reached out a hand to try and wipe the tears tracks from her face, moving slow.Â
Rosie had always been someone who knew her fears. She could look at herself and know what could make her crumble, yet she had never seen this coming. She had never seen Cora leaving her or Salazar hating her. âCora, she left with him,â She croaked out. Had she been more aware of herself, she would have never let him brush away her tears, he wouldnât have even seen them, but she let him this time.
The wolf growled, trying to leap forward at the girl, but Cass already knew what her fear was. Sheâd faced it in real life. A couple spells later, and the smoke was gone, no flames crackled, and the only wolf in the room was her. Walking back outside, she crouched beside Rosie. âHey.â Her voice was soft. Dealing with fears was worse than anything else, she knew that. âYou need to breath. Whatever it was, it canât hurt you right now.â
Rosie had never thought that her fears would effect her as they did. She wasnât fearless, she wasnât even close to fearless, but she knew her own fears as well as she could. She knew them as to learn how to deal with them and be better than them. Yet, they had gotten the best of her. It didnât hurt her, it didnât even thought her. âM-my wand,â She muttered breathlessly,âHe broke my wand.â
Salazar had been aware that there was a boggart loose in the castle, it was the ideal time for a crisis of this nature really. Especially due to the fact that there were fewer students than before. However in the process of tracking it down. Stood outside the room, he used his wand to open the lock and stepped inside. The sight of Rosemarie Heap, a beginner in his own house. âRiddikulus!â he growled at the boggart, dispelling it with ease. Before turning to his student. âMiss Heap?â he said quietly, crouching down beside her and placing a firm hand upon her shoulder, âAre you okay?â he asked quietly, âI know whatever you experienced mustâve been terrified, Iâm afraid a boggart is a little beyond your current skill levels right now, next time please allow one of the founders to deal with the problem.âÂ
Rosie had no idea what the boggart had been. She hadnât seen it as anything but people she had known. As Salazar crouched down and placed his hand on her shoulder, Rosie flinched away from him. Was he here to make sure she got out of the castle? His words took a second to catch up in her brain,âBoggart? What?â She knew what the creature was, but she had never seen her own before.Â
Gunnarr had gone looking for his little training protĂŠgĂŠ when she didnât show up to their appointed practice time which wasâŚadmittedly rather unlike her. Heâd checked all the usual places, but hadnât found her in any of the usual haunts, and finally heâd gotten to checking currently disused classrooms. Perhaps sheâd got caught up with practicing her magic. Then he came upon the strangest thing. A doorknob that seemed to beâŚrattling on its own? Hoping he wasnât in for falling prey to a trick from Peeves, he managed to get the door open, though charms wasnât his strongest suit. Though heâd been looking for Rosie he hadnât expected to find her behind this door, and certainly not like this. In a moment, concern took him over and he was trying to dip his face to see into Rosieâs eyes, a comforting hand going to her arm. âHey- hey- what is it? What happened?â He looked around the room with a hard gaze, searching for something that might have hurt her.
Rosie needed to get out of the room. She couldnât stand the sound of those crickets anymore, she was losing her mind hearing them. She crawled away from Gunnarr as he asked her his questions, making it to the hall ways opposite wall. âThey left me,â She whispered. She couldnât tell him that Salazar snapped her wand or that he had expelled her. She couldnât admit that just yet.

Daisy had been mewing at her for two floors, tangling around her ankles and batting at the hem of her loose breeches. It wasnât until she reached a door, that she noted another kitten, scratching at it, while Daisy looked beseechingly up at her. So Phoebe quirked her brow up, âYou dragged me up two flights of stairs to open a door for a cat friend?â she was bemused by her newfound companion, but decided to indulge the felines and turned it. There was resistance as she frowned and tugged hard, and a figure came sprawling out while both cats hissed at the room but Phoebe was already kneeling down, âHey, are you alright?â her fingers went to the girlâs tear-streaked cheeks as she pulled her wand out to try and aid. The room was empty, seemingly, but there was a sharp distasteful aura in the air. She hissed at the feeling before returning her glace, âIâm Phoebe Pyrite, Iâm a Healer, whatâs your name and House?â if the girl couldnât answer Phoebe was already making contingency plans to move them.
Rosie fell when the door opened, her palms scraping against the floor as they moved to support her. She ignored the question as she crawled out of the room, to the outside wall of the hallway. She took in shuddering breaths, finally feeling cool air in her lungs. After a moment, she could answer. âRosie. Slytherin.â
Cora had been searching for her little sister so she could thank her in person for the beautiful flower crown sheâd gotten her for Christmas. Even now it was perched on her head as she traded happily through the hallways, asking everyone if theyâd seen Rosie. After someone told her theyâd seen the girl going through a door a while ago, Cora tried to open said door. Only to find itâŚlocked? An Alohamora later and she was bursting into the room, a bright smile on her lips. âRosie, Iââ But then she looked down to her little sister, looking positively broken on the floor. Instantly she dropped to the floor next to her sister, hands going to her tear stained cheeks. âRosie, whatâs wrong? Whatâs happened? Are you hurt?â
As her brain registered that Cora was in her sights again, Rosie startled backward. She didnât want to be left again. Why was her sister there? âWhy are you back?â She asked in a broken whisper. âJust leave if youâre going to leave!â She yelled, feeling betrayed by her for coming back, the tears racing down her cheeks faster.
Cass had heard there was a Boggart in the castle, and it just so happened, there was a market for those amongst the seedier parts of the world. Finding the room hadnât been easy, but when she heard the doorknob rattling, she realised sheâd found the right room. Her wand at the ready, she opened the door. âRosie?â Cass frowned, stepping into the room. The boggart whirled through the air, flames starting to spread over every inch of the room. Monster. Through the thick smoke, two yellow eyes could been seen staring at the girl that Cass had been tutoring, as such. Instinctively, she stepped in front of her to protect her from the wolf.Â
Rosie looked up at Cass, her numb brain finally registering that something was different when the woman said her name. When the door opened fully enough, she scrambled out of the room into the hallway where she slumped against the wall, ignoring the flames. The crickets had finally stopped. She could hear everything else. She could hear herself think. She let out gasping breaths as she tried to center herself.
Rosie isnât sure how long she had been in the room. It could have been minutes or hours, she wasnât sure anymore. All she knew was that she was slumped against the door feeling cold and numb. Her sobbing had finally stopped, though tears still ran down her face, but she had yet to stop rattling the doorknob in hopes it would open. The crickets had yet to stop and she swore she was losing her mind as she heard the words pathetic whispered over and over again.
A little Rosie wanders into the wrong room in the castle and meets her biggest fears.
Rosie had always been an inquisitive, young girl. She had to learn every secret that there was to learn about the castle. She had to map out every room and know every nook and cranny. She drove herself well into the night searching rooms. She was smart and she lived off of the thrill of learning.
She knew that one day it might get her in trouble. One day she might get into a room that would lead people to be angry. One day she might see something she was never supposed to and that made it all the more exciting. The idea that she could be the one secretholder of something great about Hogwarts excited her. And she knew that it was always a good thing to have secrets others didnât know about.
It was how she ended up in a room she knew she was very much not supposed to be in. It was a higher floor, but the door had been unlocked and so Rosie had slipped in as quiet as a mouse. She heard the door lock behind her, but she was rather unconcerned. She was very sure that she would be able to charm her way out of the room.
Grubby hands went through the cabinets, not to steal, but to look. She did not steal anymore, there was no use of her stealing here, but she could not stop the curiosity that screamed at her to look around the cabinets.
She heard the movement behind her before she saw the person and she was rather sure she was about to get in trouble. She raised her hands up,âIâm not stealing, I swear. Iâm just looking. I was curious.â
The voice that answered her was one she had not heard in nearly six years. It shook her very core. âMarie, I didnât think you were stealing. Iâve seen you steal before and youâve never been this sloppy.â
She turned slowly, a strange sense of dread and hope gathering in her throat. âDad?â She asked as she finally looked at the visage of her father. He hadnât changed a bit, though she supposed that six years could be a drop in the bucket for wizards. âWhat are you doing here?â
He smiled, the mocking smile she had grown up with,âDonât worry, squirt. Iâm not going here. Iâm just here to see my daughter.â
She swallowed, confused and already regretting the feeling of hope that was coming up her chest. She hated him. He had made her into a person that she didnât want to be. He had made her steal from people who barely had anything. He made her drag her name through the mud to survive, all the while he did nothing but sit at home. âI thought you didnât want me.â She didnât want him to want her, but she wanted to be wanted. She wanted him to say that he had made a mistake and that he was going to be better. He was going be the father that she had always wanted.
He laughed, loudly, cruelly. âOh, Marie. Iâm not here for you. God, no. Iâve seen what youâre going to be and I already know Iâm going to be disappointed. Youâre going to be a bullshitter and a cheat and a thief for the rest of your life. Youâre going to be just like me. I can already see it. Iâm here for Coralynn. She has potential. A lot more than you at least.â
That hope, that tiny little spark that she had tried to not feel shattered and she could feel it puncture into her lungs. She lifted her chin, he would not see her waver. âI am not going to be like you.â
âArenât you? You canât read. You canât do anything by yourself. You beg and borrow and steal from those students and just bullshit your way through classes. The Founders are already starting to figure you out. Miss Hufflepuff already knows you canât read. What is she going to do when she realizes that for every spell you do, it takes hours of lost sleep to figure it out. What are you going to do when you stop being the brilliant witch everyone thinks you are? When they find out that you are just a fake?â
Her lips quivered, but she clenched her jaw. He was not going to break her. He had been cruel to her before, she could stand this. She could take this. âPutting work into my studies is not being a fake.â
He tilted his head,âYou realize that there are students who pick those spells up the first time they do them. It takes you hundreds to even get close. Do you realize how much time youâre wasting by pretending you will be any different than we already think you are?â
âI am not less of a person because I work hard for what I produce,â She told him, her voice keeping strong.
âNo, youâre not. You are less of a person because of what you had to do to get here. No one likes a thief. Especially thieves who stole from the poor.â
Her throat was closing from the anxiety of the ideas that others would find out what she did. That they would not understand or even care to. âGet out.â
âGladly, Marie. Iâll send Coralynn by in a bit to say goodbye.â
âSay goodbye?â
âGoodbye, Marie.â
Her father walked out of the room without even unlocking the door, but Rosie stood frozen. Why was Cora going to say goodbye? Her sister wouldnât leave her for their father, she knew that⌠But Rosie knew how much Cora wanted a family. How much she wanted to have a father and be part of something caring.
She couldnât tell if it was seconds or hours before Cora walked in. âRosebud!â She said brightly with a smile.
Even though Rosie was rather drained and feeling run down, she smiled at her sister. She was the warmest person she had ever met. âCora⌠Dad was just here, he said-â
âOh good! He told you.â
âHe told me what?â
Cora looked at her as though she was being silly,âThat Iâm leaving with him. Weâre sailing together. Heâs asked me to be his first mate on his new merchant ship. I couldnât say no.â
Rosie felt her heart sinking, Cora was leaving her? âWhat about me?â She asked weakly.
Coraâs warm smile slide off her face,âWhat about you? Youâre an adult, Rosemarie, you could act like one for once in your life. Did you expect me to be here to pick up the pieces every time you messed up? Iâm not your mother, thank the Lord, Iâm not your mother. You need to stop being so selfish. Iâm not putting my own dreams down to baby you for the rest of your life.â
Those shards of hope that had dug into her lungs pierced further. Her sister, her life preserver was leaving and Rosie couldnât stop her. Cora was right, she couldnât be selfish and ask her sister to stay behind for no good reason.
âAw, Rosebud, look happy for me! Iâm getting out of that pathetic life we had before. Iâm not going to be stuck on your farm for the rest of my life. Iâm not going to have to marry that man to keep that farm. Thatâs your job now.â Rosie gave her a weak, half hearted smile. âBye, Rosebud. Might see you in a couple of years.â
She didnât even tell her that she loved her before she left. She just slid out of the door as easily as her father had. Rosie slid down the cabinets, her knees going to her chest as she shook. Her family was leaving her again. Her mother was dead, her father had picked Cora over her, and Cora had picked her dreams over Rosie.
She took shuddering breathes in, trying to calm herself from the oncoming panic that was washing over her. She was going to be alone again. She was going to be alone and she would have to fend for herself all over again. She would have to become just like her father, a bullshitter, a cheat, a thief. All the things she had thought she had moved past. She would not be the most brilliant witch in Hogwarts. She was going to be a beggar who was just trying to make it through a day alive. Perhaps this is all she deserved in life.
The sound of crickets echoed through the room as Rosie attempted to calm herself. The sound grated her, all she wanted was silence. She wanted to have peace and yet all she heard were the sound of bugs around her. She opened her eyes and yet there was nothing there. She closed them again as she began to rock back and forth, tears squeezing out from her clenched lids.
She felt numb the next time she heard the door open, her head not lifting from her knees. âMiss Heap, what are you doing in this room? It is off limits for students in your class level,â She heard the stern voice of Salazar.
She looked up, her face stained with tears. âIâm sorry, sir,â She croaked out.
âApologies mean nothing. We had high hopes for you and yet again and again you disappoint us. You canât read, you make friends with the bloody poltergeist, you stay up ungodly hours, you break into rooms. You are not fit to be at Hogwarts. You have dishonored my name with every action. Youâve dragged us through the mud and made a spectacle of yourself over and over again.â
The disappointment and disgust that was dripping from the Founderâs words was enough to make Rosie feel ill. Panic, however, rose in her once again when she noticed her wand in his hand. She patted her side and realized that she must have left it on the ground before.
The Founder lifted the wand, looking it over. âPathetic wand for a pathetic witch. You wonât need this anymore,â He said as he took his hands on either side and snapped the wand in two.
All the air in her lungs left as she lunged forward with an anguished cry. âNo!â Her magic was the one thing she had left after today. She had lost her family, but at the very least she had Hogwarts and her magic.
âAn expelled witch does not need her wand. I hope you are ready to spend the rest of your days on that farm of yours.â Master Slytherin said as he moved out of the room, shutting the door in her face.
Rosie let out a tormented cry as she stared at her broken wand. She lost everything. She was nothing, again. She had no family. No school. No magic. She was just⌠A hopeless girl lost in the world. The room felt smaller and smaller as she sat there, staring at her wand. She crawled forward and attempted to open the door to the room. It was locked.
She had no wand to charm her way out. It was locked. She was locked in this room. The crickets got louder as Rosie began to cry harder. They drowned out the noise she made. All she could hear were crickets.

Happy Christmas, little shrimp. I couldnât decide between these two daggers so I got both. They both seemed like you, but in different ways so Iâm gonna say one is for nighttime stabbing, and one is for daytime stabbing. Donât use them until I show you how to, but feel free to open letters with them until then.Â
Also if you look closely you can see the words âWorldâs Smartest Witchâ engraved on this cup. Is it a cup? It might be a trophy. Possibly both. I liked both. Either way I figured you could put your water spells in it, and also the crown comes off so Iâm just sayingâ if you want to wear that around as just a crownâŚI definitely didnât try it out. Donât be too sad that classes are on break right now, we can train more to make up for it. Have a good holiday!
I know we do not know each other well, but I feel like I do. You mean so much to Cora, and she talks about you so often. The shawl is charmed to never get dirty and to repel water.Â
Aside from those given to other Gryffindors, Rosieâs gift arrived earliest that day, before the morning meal had started. It was a miniature, spitting image of Peeves, his mouth curved in a wicked grin, completed with the faint sound of jingling bells on his jesterâs cap as the head bobbed from side to side.
âYou had better like him, because after making this I canât sleep without his face haunting my dreams. Merry Christmas!
Youâre another year older! And itâs another year of knowing one another. Truly, the best gift I have even been given was the gift of my sister, and nothing could ever match that. But Iâm hoping that this helps to close the gap a little. I know you were disappointed about not being able to get a pet when we first got here, but Iâm glad I can also rectify that. This is the fluffiest kitten I could find, and I hope they bring you as much joy as you bring me.
Iâm so proud of you, Rosie. To get to see you thriving here at Hogwarts has been yet another gift, and I know youâll only continue to reach heights others couldnât even begin to dream of as you become more beautiful and brighter every single day. I love you, little sister.
[Delivered during breakfast on the morning of the feast, a black box with a silver serpent broach, a leather bound journal, a quill and a bottle of ink. At the bottom of the box is a small vial filled with a silver blue potion. The box is delivered with a note attached]
Rosemarie,
Merry Christmas, welcome to Slytherin House. I hope you enjoy your first Christmas as a member of the best house in Hogwarts. In the box youâll find a number of gifts that I hope you will have use for in the coming year. It is not much, but consider it a token of my affection.
Sincerely,
Salazar Slytherin.
P.S.Â
Your eagerness to be distinguished from your fellow classmates has not been missed by myself or the other founders. The potion will allow you to see things that are invisible for 15 minutes for every drop you use. Perhaps it shall assist you in your endeavours to befriend that damned poltergeist.

Gunnarr pretended as if he were taking her question seriously for a moment, considering it before simply saying. âYes.â Then he stood still as she moved his grip. âHow does you hand just barely even cover mine? Also if you wanted to hold hands you could have just asked.â Generally, he tried to avoid anything that was close to a flirt with Rosie, but it was too amusing of one to pass up. Besides, this was more in the teasing department. But then he did as she asked, closer to what sheâd done. âHow was that Mistress Heap?â he said with a crooked grin.
âHands tend to be proportionate to bodies, so my hand is small and yourâs is larger. Does that answer your question?â She said drily, with a raised eyebrow. Before now she had been rather tentative to be so dry with him, but he was asking for it with that comment. âYouâve caught me, this was all a clever rouse to get you to hold my hand. I am hopelessly in love with you, Gunnarr, please hold my hand.â She nodded at him to go again,âItâs getting better, but there is a moment between your upward and downward moment where you arenât as fluid as you are otherwise.â
Eleonora nodded, beginning to form a bit of a path when it came to the route Rosieâs journey through healing might take. âAlrightâ well then weâll probably mostly start with simply anatomy and the like. Parts of the bodies and their functions and things like that. But we can also mix some little healing charms in to begin with.â
Rosie hummed, trying to decide whether or not she should mention that books without pictures or smaller words would be rather useless to her. âSounds perfect to me. I hope that this will not change the course of action, but I can not read. So books without diagrams will be of no help to me.â
