Always in a Rush (But I Had All the Time in the World)
AN: I read a fanfic that hit me with this idea yesterday and I thought it was great. They did it as a little sidenote to their larger fic but i just HAD to do something bigger with it! Incarnated Pokegods are verrry interesting~
Barry had to move. He had to move! The blonde dove behind a shattered statue in the ruined temple atop Mt Cornet. It sat high above the clouds as it looked down on the rest of the Sinnoh region.
The place was ancient and abandoned, a mark of history that everyone knew existed but had only tiny scraps of information about. It had once belonged to some ancient people that lived in the region, the Celestica, but they had died out years and years ago. There were marks from them, found and talked about by the people that came to Sinnoh later on, but everything that was known about them was complete speculation.
Barry only knew stuff about them from old museums and a couple history books heād read for school assignments.
What stood out to him, right then, was that the air was thin if you were in the temple and trying to breath normally there made his chest hurt slightly.
(Also, it was chillier than heād thought it should have been. He should have grabbed a thicker coat before heād raced up there.)
The place was crawling with lackeys from Team Galactic and the freaky machines hooked up to fancy relics they stole that they were using to try and forcibly summon Dialga, the Ruler/God of Time, and Palkia, the Ruler/God of Space. All so that their crazy boss could use his definitely-evil red magic-chain to capture them so he could for them to destroy the universe and build a new one to his specifications.
Which was all kinds of insane and Barry wasnāt sure where to even start with that.
Palkia had appeared from a rippling portal with a roar that seemed to shake, well, everything around them. It had come through, tall and powerful and covered in creamy scales that shimmered like pearls heād seen in jewelry and aquariums heād visited as a kid. It stood on its back legs, wing-like things sticking out of its back, and lots of pink ridges over it that make some of itās limbs look more like armor than itās natural body. Itās tusks helped frame the dark red eyes that glared out at the assembled humans, which certainly made his hair stand on end.
It had sure looked like the powerful dragon-type pokemon the legends said it was.
Then Cyrus, the crazy boss of Team Galactic, used the first of his Red Chains (the ānaturallyā made one that heād almost killed the pokemon from the lakes to get) to capture it. And then the entire place erupted into chaos.
The sky had gone wrong, flashing with lights that made his instincts scream in panic. Palkia was in pain and fighting against the control but already space was breaking because of what was happening. But that was only half of what Galactic had wanted to happen.
Dialga hadnāt heeded the call from the machine hooked up to the Adamant Orb, not yet at least, but there was no telling how much longer it could resist whatever the scientist was doing to force it there. Not to mention how the breaking Space was probably making it freak out.
But it couldnāt come there! It had to stay away! It couldnāt come and be caught by Team Galactic too!
He would- He would fine it millions, no billionsĀ if it actually showed up! Who cared if gods, legendary pokemon, probably didnāt care about money? Heād figure out some way to make it sorry if it showed up!
Galacticās boss was using Palkia to fight Lucas and Dawn when they tried to stop him, but their pokemon were beating it back as best they could. They were winning against it, thanks to the combined efforts of Dawnās Torterra and Lucasā Empoleon, but the entirety of the shattered temple around them had turned into a battlefield.
Hearing it scream from the attacks it was being hit with, from being forced to obey that- that- WhackjobĀ using the chain, made his heart clench painfully in his chest.
(It made him feel like he was gonna be sick. Why, though? It was awful but the horror was just so strongĀ it didnāt make sense.)
Cyrusā lackeys were scrambling back from the raging battle, rushing away from the blast zone and racing back down the mountain tunnels to escape before a stray attack could hit any of them.
Barryās gaze locked on the scientist grunt holding the Adamant Orb, amber eyes tracking them through the chaos.
He had to get it away from them. He couldnāt let them summon Dialga and capture it with the copy chain theyād made.
Fighting Space was hard enough on Dawn and Lucasā teams, his friends wouldnāt be able to face Time too. They would loseĀ if they had to battle Space and Time. He had to keep them from getting it there.
He hadĀ to get the Adamant Orb before they could force Dialga to appear and try to capture it too.
(Something in him screamsĀ that he shouldnāt touch it, that he needs to stay away from it,Ā that heās not ready, itās not time! But he canātĀ let them win. He canātĀ give them the chance to win!)
Barry lunged at the grunt the second he had an opening to, forgoing his pokemon entirely and slamming an elbow into their gut to knock the wind out of them. His hands scrabbled against theirs, nails clawing at their skin until he could get a grip on the Adamant Orb and wrench it from their grasp.
By some stroke of good luck, the grunt kept their grip on the machine it had been hooked up to. Which was ripped off because of the scrambled fight between them.
The Orb glowed at his touch and Barry choked asĀ e v e r y t h i n gĀ s h i f t e d

He is Barry and he is human. He has Lucas and Dawn to help him.
He sagged in their arms with a trembling sigh of relief.
āI shouldnāt have done that,ā he mumbled, leaning into Lucasā steady hold. Dawnās dainty hand rested on his shoulder, muted by his coat but still there. His eyes were heavy and his head was rapidly filling with an exhausted fog. āI wasnāt ready for it yetā¦ā
āWhat are you talking about? Werenāt ready for what?ā Dawn asked, voice soft and confused. She sounded far away to him. But she was right there, wasnāt she?
āTā get it all back. Tā āmember who I was bāfore.ā His words were slurred as they came out. Barry was struggling to keep his eyes open. His eyelids felt so heavy now⦠His everything felt heavy, once the thought hit him.
Oh. Wait, he knew what was going on. He was gonna pass out soon, wasnāt he? That⦠Wasnāt actually a surprise, considering what heād just done to himself.
His very-human self had just connected to all of Time. Far too soon for him to be capable of dealing with that kind of thing. Everything was still learning and growing, he just couldnāt handle that kind of power yet.
āRemember? Remember what?ā Lucas was right next to him, but somehow sounded muffled. Like he was underwater.
He should tell them what had just happened. He needed to tell them what all that was about. So they could know what was wrong and that he would be okay. Eventually.
And so they knew to not let Galactic take him. Bad things would happen if they got his sibling and him. They might run into them again when they tried to get off the mountain. He didnāt think heād be able to get himself down though. Not right then.
(He was so, soĀ tired now. But he trusted his friends to make sure he would be okay.)
He lifted his heavy, heavy head to look at them, shadows already filling his vision as he slurred his answer to his friendās question.
ā āM Dialga.ā
Unconsciousness claimed him before he could hear the shouts of shock from his friends.
AN: When he wakes up again, safe in a motel room his friends scrambled to get him to, Dawn and Lucas tell him they'd heard him say that he would fine Dialga if it showed up at Spear Pillar. Since he can't fine himself, they were going to fine him in Ice Cream. From the nearest Ice Cream Parlor to the motel. He laughs until his stomach hurts from the Serious Faces they're making at him as they say it.
Jun 25, 2026 Edit: I went back and added more to this. To give some clarifications, fill in some details I'd skimmed when I first wrote this out, and to smooth out the ending a little bit.
I'm very pleased with this over all and with the way I played with various writing tenses to get the point across. (I also like how Barry corralling his thoughts/focus at the end came out.)

Funky fanfic Idea I had that I felt like I needed to write something for.
Akari and Rei get to know each other better. Rei teaches her to carve a simple whistle.
Akari trudged into the village, tired and aching from her latest attempts at logging more information about the shinx that lived in the nearby Fieldlands.
Pikachu had been difficult, as he often was, when the shinx spotted her and tried to attack. Barely listening to her and just doing whatever he pleased, even when it ended in him getting hurt. She was trying to work on that, but he just make it so hard.
She really didn't know what to do with him. She didn't have a clue how to cross whatever barrier there was that kept him from trusting her to help him. She felt like she was trying hard enough to connect to him to be a good partner. But obviously she was doing something wrong, even if she had no idea what.
Sometimes, she was really jealous of how well Rei got along with Nocht.
They clicked together like two pieces of a puzzle. Two beans in a pod. They were able to work together like they'd known each other for ages instead of just a couple months. Nocht followed Rei's commands without hesitating, fully trusting Rei to take care of him and lead him right. There was no hesitation, just understanding and teamwork.
Maybe she should just ask him what he did to get the rowlet to like him so much. He must know some trick for them to work so well so quickly. She was sure he would tell her if she asked him.
Even if her pride stung from the thought of having to go to the newest recruit of the Survey Corps for help. She was his senior, she had been part of the Galaxy Team longer than he had. She should have been the one guiding and helping him through the trials of Hisui.
Instead, she was struggling and he was taking to the place like a duck to water.
She gave her head a rough shake, smacking her own cheeks sharply to banish the thought. No! That was mean to think! And it was wrong!
Rei didn't struggle with pokemon, but he struggled with other things.
He was lonely and missed his family. He didn't come to Hisui because he wanted to. He said the last thing he remembered was going to bed before waking up on Prelude Beach. He never even had the chance to say goodbye to his family before he ended up there.
Not like she did. She knew where they were and how they felt about her life in Jubilife Village and how much they understood what she was doing and why she wanted to do it.
(Not that her leaving had been very dramatic anyway. She was young enough to work, so she went out and worked and that was⦠Fineā¦)
Rei hadn't had that. He couldn't send his family letters, or send them presents, or ask how his friends from home were doing, or- or- Anything!
Rei was alone in Hisui, with no way home and no way to see his family again.
It was obvious that he struggled with how lonely his life was now.
She and Professor Laventon were the only ones who really reached out to him. Everyone else tended to avoid or just ignore him, all of them too unsure of what to think about him to try getting to actually know him. The security corps were the only ones who really talked to him, and that was usually them just checking to make sure he was packed up to leave the village. A bare minimum that was part of their jobs.
Which Akari thought was dumb. It wasn't like any of them were from Hisui either!
Rei was nice! Sure, he talked kinda weird and used weird sayings and got along with pokemon way better than everyone else did. And, well, he did fall out of the skyā¦
But! He was nice! Really, really nice! He told fun stories to the kids and even play with them if they asked him to. He tried to greet every member of the village guards by name whenever he passed them and would ask how their day's were going, even if he wasn't leaving the village. He would offer to help people if he saw they were having trouble with something or just needed extra hands.
He was just- Genuinely nice. It wasn't fair that people were so nervous about him just because of how he got there.
Akari puffed up in determination.
Okay! She would ask him for help with pikachu. He was sure to be honest with her, because he was always honest.
Plan in mind, Akari dropped her pokedex notes off at Galaxy Hall for the professor to look through and went looking for the newest recruit to the Galaxy Team.
She found him sitting in the grass by the shrine with his crafting kit out and Nocht tucked into his side. That didn't look like one of the Galaxy ones, thoughā¦
Oh, right, Laventon said Rei's found something else that had belonged to his grandparents in a distortion. Some kind of whittling box? It had sounded similar to a crafting kit to her. And it looked at lot like one too, even if the box looked fancier than the kits she was used to. It was a deep red, with yellow accents and crests engraved into it. The tools looked kinda odd though. They were metal, but something about them looked different to her. It didn't look like they'd been made of ironā¦
It sounded like Rei was humming as he whittled away at a single stick in his hands, several more stacked up beside him and waiting to be worked on next. There were a lot of curled shavings at the end but, for some reason, he wasn't actually cutting them off.
"Rei? What are you doing?"
Rei looked up at her and smiled. He paused his work long enough to wave hello to her.
"Oh, hi Akari! I'm just making some feather sticks for the next time I head out of the village."
"Feather⦠Sticks?" She asked, sitting down next to him. Rei gave a confirming hum, turning back to the stick he was carving up.
"Yup. Grandpa and I used to make them whenever we were planning to go camping. They're really good for tinder to help start a fire, since all the little shavings catch quickly and help the larger pieces they're connected to start burning."
"Okay⦠That's actually kinda neat," she said, nodding slowly. She was able to picture how that worked in her head. "And since they're all still on the bigger stick, it's harder to lose them when you travel, right?"
"Exactly! It's⦠Been a long time since I've made them." Rei's smile looked sad as he said that.
"Why? Doesn't your grandpa still make them?"
Her friend paused again, his face suddenly much sadder.
"No. He⦠He can't make them with me anymore. He, uh, passed away a few years ago." Rei said softly, looking down at his lap as he answered. Akari let out a small gasp, hands covering her mouth.
"Oh! Oh, I'm sorry! I didn't mean to-" Rei waved off her apology.
"It's okay. I'm not upset about it. You didn't know, after all," He said gently. "Grandpa passed when I was twelve. So, I've had time to let go."
"What⦠Um⦠Happened to him?" She asked before she could stop herself. Akari wanted to kick herself as soon as the words left her. What was she saying! Her friend was sad! "No, uh, actually, you-"
"He'd come down with something one winter and never quite shook it off. He insisted it was just a chest cold every time Grandma or I started worrying about it. The rainy seasons always made the cough he'd gotten much worse, so he loved to go out and enjoy warm, sunny days whenever they came," Rei said, his voice quiet. She immediately fell silent, letting him talk. "He fell asleep sitting in the yard while Grandma and I went out to do some shopping. And he just⦠Didn't wake back up when we came home. Grandma cried a lot, but she said he'd been warm and happy and that was a good way to go."
"I still miss him sometimes. I'll be doing something and think to myself "Grandpa would like this" and then I remember that I can't show it to him. Or I would find myself turning around, just about to call to him, and then I'll realize he's not there."
Slowly, he started work on the feather sticks again. Both of them sitting in the grass as he quietly worked, the breeze ruffling their hair.
She felt bad now. She didn't mean to make him sad. Akari fussed with the edge of her kimono. What should she do? Should she leave? Should she stay? Should she try to cheer him up again?
"But⦠I know it's okay that he's not here. He's still looking out for me, I'm sure of it." She looked over at Rei and the small, soft smile that had appeared on his face. "He's probably with the rest of my ancestors, now. Looking out for everyone and trying to help guide me when he can. That's what Arthur and Guinevere did, after all."
Right, in those journals Rei's grandma wrote, their family's spirits looked out for them from the beyond. To help them. (That sounded nice. Knowing that, even if they were gone, they were still looking out for you.)
"That's⦠That's good." She said softly. She gave a small smile of her own. "Maybe he's doing what all grandpa's do now. Yelling about us kids being too loud or silly and telling us all the ways we should be doing things instead."
Rei let out a laugh.
"Probably! I wouldn't put it past him to be correcting everything I'm trying to do. That, or he's yelling at me to start make whistles and frog sticks for all the kids in the village so they can drive their parents up the walls."
"He wouldn't!" She said laughing. She didn't know what a frog stick was, but it sound like it was something noisy.
"Oh yes he would. Grandpa was nice, but he was also a trouble maker! He'd make all kinds of whistles and flutes and clappers and just hand them out during fairs and parties to every kid he saw. I honestly have no idea how many parents had to deal with their kids playing loud whistles in the house because of him!"
Akari giggled at the picture, an oldman version of Rei popping into her head and sneakily handing the kids around the village little wooden whistles to play with behind the backs of all the parents.
Rei's grandfather sounded kind of like Hinamori-san, who'd lived down the road in from her in her old village.
"Well, I know someone from home who was a little like thatā¦"
The two spent the rest of the day trading stories about the places they came from, laughing loud and hard as they did. Akari eventually pulled out her own crafting kit to try her own hand at making some feather sticks to take on her next survey trip and learned how to make a small wooden whistle from her friend when he asked if she knew how to make them. Neither of them had cut their hands while working because of their laughter, and Akari quite like her new whistle.
(Rei gifted the one he'd made to show it was done to Zizu when she'd wandered over from the training grounds to see what was going on. He'd said it would be a good way to get people's attention without having to yell. She'd looked quite happy about the small gift.)
Her cheeks hurt from the laughter but she was happy to know so much about her friend now.
It wouldn't be much until much later, as she went back to her own unit to turn in for the night, that she realized she'd completely forgotten to ask Rei for help with Pikachu. She'd huffed at her cooking dinner, and debated going over to Rei's unit to ask before it got too late.
Except⦠It wasn't like the day had been a waste just because she hadn't. She'd gotten closer to Rei, learned a knew skill, and generally had a nice time doing something other than worrying about her survey work.
And that was just as good.
She'd just have to ask for his help on a different day. Tomorrow was supposed to be a quiet day, Rei had said he was going to stay in the village for a little bit before he went out into the field again. She could ask him then for help.
Maybe they could just spend another day like this together while they were at it. That actually sounded really nice, now that she'd thought of it.
Akari nodded to herself with a smile. That sounded like a perfect plan to her.
AN: I know that, by the game's logic, Akari should be the better crafter of the two. But I'm putting my own spin on this logic by making her the more refined craftswoman of the two. She has fewer things she knows how to make compared to her friend, but she makes them at a much better quality than Rei does. Rei knows how to make far more things (especially whittled projects) but his are much simpler than the rest of the Survey Corps' stuff. They're kids projects compared to the fancy things Akari can do. He makes things for work and a few things just for fun, so he tends to only work as much as he needs to get something functional for whatever he's doing.
That said, Nocht's pokeball is very fancy looking bc Rei sometimes just sits and carves patterns into it when he's bored. It makes it visually eye-catching and easy to recognize. He does this with all of the pokemon he catches that he grows especially close to. He likes making their balls seem unique and special for them.
The toolbox Rei is using used to belong to his grandfather, who made fun kitschy things for fairs and events. Things that parents or kids would want to bring home that were fairly cheap. He could make much fancier things (he ran a furniture store!) but the kit was usually for his smaller projects. The tools are not, in fact, iron or steel. They're a special metal fae use that's much safer for them to handle than cold iron. His were/are magical and meant to last for far, far longer than any normal human tools, even if they were used constantly.

(I also like how Barry corralling his thoughts/focus at the end came out.)

āRight, what Lucas said. Weāre here with you. Just- Just close your eyes and breathe, okay?ā DawnAkariHisTheirItsFriend sayssaidsaying into DBiaarlrgyaās other ear.

Hethey feelsfelt histheir chest expandexpanding as hethey breathsbreathed in. It iswaswillnot be too much. Hethey canwill handle it. Hethey hashad before. Hethey couldwould again.
āI-Iām g-gonna hurl,ā he rasped out. Hethey feelfelt histheir friends move himthem enough to heave without getting either of them covered in histheir sick. Histheir throat burned, but it didnāt help himthem.
Hethey needed to focus on the Now. Time iswas fluctuating through himthem. Hethey waswillbe still seeing too much. Hethey needsneeded to cut histheir own powers.
āT-take the Orb from m-me. Pl-please,ā DBiaarlrgya pleadspleaded, voice trembling. Holding it iswas mademaking histheir power too strong for his mindbody. Hethey needsneeded them to take it.
One of them gently pullspulled it from histheir hands. Hethey didnātdoesnāt know which of them tooktake it, but the flow drownsdrowning himthem fades once itās gone. Hethey cancould think again, hethey canwill focus on the Now again.
Hethey isnātwasnāt alone. Hethey hashad histheir friends. They couldwould help himthem. Hethey knowknew they couldwould. They arewere histheir closest friends.
They arewere the only ones that knewknow DBiaarlrgya. Who knowknew himthem.
Hethey iswas DiBaarlrgya. Hethey hashad LucasReiHistheirFreind and DawnAkariHisTheirItsFriend.
Hethey iswas DiaBarlrgya and hethey iswas humanpokemon. Hethey hashad LucasReiHistheirItsFreind and DawnAkariHisTheirItsFriend to help himthem.
Hethey iswas DialBarrgya and hethey iswas humanpokemon. Hethey hashad LucasRei and DawnAkari to help himthem.
Hethey iswas DialgBerrya and hethey iswas human. Hethey hashad LucasRei and DawnAkari to help himthem.
He is DialgaBerry and he is human. He has LucasRei and DawnAkari to help him.
He is DialgaBerry and he is human. HeĀ hasĀ LucasReiĀ and DawnAkari to help him.
