Caption of the GIF above for all the Captains who can't see it: Julian Bashir, in the later seasons of DS9, in the new greyish Starfleet uniform with a green collar, looking up at something just above him before pivoting to examine it closer from a different angle. Classic.
HEAR YE, HEAR YE, FAN ARTISTS OF THE DETECTIVE GRIMOIRE COMMUNITY!! I AM HERE TO MAKE A PROPOSITION!!!
In celebration of the upcoming release of The Mermaid Mask, I am looking for participants for a bit of an ambitious collaboration:
A COLLAGE OF DETECTIVE GRIMIORE/TANGLE TOWER FAN ART THAT WILL BE SHOWN OFF DURING A LIVE TWITCH STREAM
⬇️⬇️ For Context ⬇️⬇️
To put it simply, the Twitch/YouTube channel Save Data Team will typically cap off their streams of games with decent fan followings by viewing fan art submitted to their discord server, Tangle Tower being one of them, and they've already expressed interest in streaming Mermaid Mask. So I want to put together something that displays how much love there is for these games in this community and surprise them with it.
The deadline for entry is July 16th for the time being. I am anticipating that it may be some time out from the game's release based on their scheduling availability + at least two streaming sessions to finish the entire game, so this date may be subject to change in the future. Will provide updates as needed.
Guidelines for entry are as follows:
Anyone who is interested in submitting can dm me here or on discord with 1-2 individual pieces just to make sure there's enough room for as many ppl as possible and the name or URL that you would like to be credited with
Submissions do not have to be brand new pieces made exclusively for the collab nor do they have to be of high quality or strictly digital/traditional art. Any older pieces, crafts or goofy shitposts you're particularly proud of are welcome. The only hard expectation is that it be an image file.
Submissions containing associated OCs, fanfiction, or crossover-based content are also welcome. I will provide context at your request if needed
This almost certainly goes without saying, but please keep all submissions SFW. Keep in mind that this is for the purpose of being viewed live on Twitch and later uploaded to YouTube when making your submission
Mermaid Mask-specific fan art is of course welcome. However, in the event that the deadline is pushed back to after the game's release: PLEASE NO SPOILERS
I know I have followers from the SDT discord on here, PLEASE DO NOT MENTION THIS TO THEM WHATSOEVER, THIS IS MEANT TO BE A SURPRISE
IDK how much traction this is going to get but I'm giving it a try anyway
You know what? Fuck it I'm adding more context. Sesame Street has talked about the topic of death more than once and it's done with such gentle carefulness without watering down or censoring the heaviness of the situations. It treats heavy subject matter with respect and dignity and has been for DECADES.
From the early 1980s:
To 2025:
Hell, they even cover the devastating heaviness of MASS SHOOTINGS without censoring or watering anything down.
They've been doing this for YEARS, and it's ALWAYS handled with dignity, respect, seriousness, understanding, and love.
Whenever I see people censoring words because it "might offend" someone or the big ad companies that are currently trying to run everything? I just want to say to them: "What? Is Sesame Street too mature for you?" Because really...what the hell are we doing.
I'm back with even more examples! Sesame Street once again to this day is out here handling extremely difficult subject matter with incredible care and respect. "We can't let kids learn about uncomfortable things!" Oh, really now? Even though they're things that happen in everyday life that they'll face one day at some point anyway? Interesting. Let's see what else this show has covered that people (for some reason) think should be avoided and hidden. Here's more on death of loved ones and greif:
Or how about when someone is put into the foster care system because their home isn't safe anymore and their needs aren't being met?
Maybe some discussions about group therapy/getting help and support?
Hey look! Here's a segment about gender expression vs taught expectation, including unlearning harmful biases and what to do when you hurt someone on accident because you didn't know it was wrong!
Look! The topic of race and diversity! The importance of unity and equity!
They even also have a more allegorical take on discrimination and being looked down on for who you are, featuring Big Bird. The conflict is about how he's not being let into a club because the one bird running the club personally decided he didn't want someone like Big Bird there.
Big Bird goes out of his way to keep changing parts of himself in order to "prove" he can fit into this club if he just changed enough. The truth comes out though, and there's nothing he can do to gain the approval of that bird. He will never be good enough in his eyes, and Big Bird starts to hate himself. His real friends see this finally put their feet down, emphasizing that you should never change yourself just to fit into one singular narrow idea someone else has.
There's A LOT of different situations this can be an allegory for. Racism, sexism, homophobia, basically ANY form of exclusion is put on full blast in this 15 minute clip. Sesame Street can be both blunt and allegorical when approaching difficult topics, and it NEVER misses or looses the point.
It does an exceptional job in both styles of representation WITHOUT watering anything down. The more sanitized everything gets, the more radical Sesame Street is suddenly considered, hence why so many "particular groups" want it gone. Hmmm! I can only imagine why that could be, in this current political climate! (I'm being sarcastic)
When Sesame Street is suddenly labeled as "questionable" or "politically/agenda motivated" content...it says A LOT about where we currently are and who gets to decide what's "best" for kids or not. Don't fall for the censorship and topic-dodging excuses that are covered by the "But think of the children!!!" movement. Never fall for it, because you know which side you're on if you do.
Sesame Street proves kids can be taught and trusted with learning about these topics when it's handled with the right amount of understanding and care. It shows what all this "controversy" is all really about. What it's always been about, actually.
Don't fall for it, always side with Sesame Street.

Jury duty letter came addressed to my cat.
Not a mistake. "Felix Martinez" - that's his full name according to his vet records.
My last name. His first name. Somehow he's a registered voter now.
Called the county clerk.
Me: My cat got summoned for jury duty.
Clerk: Is the name correct on the summons?
Me: Yes, but he's a cat.
Clerk: Is Felix Martinez a legal resident of this county?
Me: He's a legal cat.
Clerk: Sir, if the name matches our records, he needs to appear or file an exemption.
Me: He can't file anything. He has paws.
Clerk: You can file on his behalf.
Me: Under what exemption? There's no box for "is a cat."
Clerk: (pause) Check "unable to serve due to medical reasons."
Me: What's the medical reason?
Clerk: He's a cat.
Me: That's not a medical condition.
Clerk: It is if it prevents him from serving.
Sent in the form. Got rejected two weeks later.
"Insufficient documentation. Please provide medical professional's statement."
Took the letter to my vet.
Me: I need you to write that my cat can't do jury duty.
Vet: Why is your cat summoned for jury duty?
Me: Excellent question. No good answer.
Vet: This is the weirdest request I've gotten.
Me: Can you just write that he's medically unfit to serve?
Vet: On what grounds?
Me: He's a cat.
Vet: (started typing) "Patient is unable to serve due to species-related limitations including inability to speak, read, or comprehend legal proceedings."
Me: Perfect.
Sent it in. Got another rejection.
"Summons is mandatory. Failure to appear will result in contempt of court."
My roommate thought this was hilarious.
Roommate: Felix is going to jail.
Me: This is serious.
Roommate: Bring him to court. See what happens.
Decided that was actually the only option left.
Day of jury duty, put Felix in his carrier. Brought the entire paper trail of rejection letters.
Checked in at the courthouse.
Clerk: Name?
Me: Felix Martinez.
Clerk: (looked at the cat carrier) Is that Felix?
Me: Yes.
Clerk: (long stare) He's a cat.
Me: I've been saying that for six weeks.
Clerk: Why didn't you file an exemption?
Me: I filed three. All rejected.
Showed her the letters. She read through them, expression shifting from confusion to disbelief.
Clerk: Someone rejected the veterinary documentation?
Me: Twice.
Clerk: (called her supervisor over) You need to see this.
Supervisor read everything. Looked at Felix. Looked at me.
Supervisor: How did a cat get registered to vote?
Me: You tell me.
Supervisor: This is a data error.
Me: Took you six weeks to figure that out.
They dismissed Felix immediately. Apologized for the inconvenience.
Supervisor: We'll remove him from the voter registry.
Me: Appreciate it.
Supervisor: (pause) Out of curiosity, how would he have voted?
Me: Probably whatever party supports universal treats.
Got a formal apology letter a week later and a voter registration card.
For me this time. Apparently I wasn't registered, but my cat was.
Roommate: Felix committed voter fraud.
Me: Felix committed nothing. He's innocent.
Roommate: That's what they all say.
Felix is sleeping on the jury summons now.
Fitting end to his legal career.

I, a person with chronic pain, have a lot of fun cosplaying Corbeau. You know what I also have a lot of fun doing? Projecting.
Chronically ill/chronic pain Corbeau headcanons:
He hates showing any sign of pain, and is proud of his high pain tolerance. Compression gear is always hidden beneath his clothes (compression gloves get hidden beneath leather gloves) and it’s another part of why he’s always completely clothed from head to toe, even in the warmer months. This man would rather die than show a hint of weakness.
He has a cane, and of course it’s expensive. He wants it to look like a statement piece, rather than a mobility aid whenever he needs to use it.
He makes ZA Royale challengers come to him consistently, not just as a method of posturing and power play, but also because he doesn’t want to be caught in a situation where he needs to call off a battle because he doesn’t want to climb a rooftop on a high pain day
Speaking of climbing, the Ange incident took it OUT of him. Also why he gets so pissed if you fall/jump off the roof lol. Needed several days of recovery.
Philippe is the only one who knows about his chronic pain. For now?
His pride, temper, and stubbornness often lead to him pushing himself further than he should. Adrenaline is a hell of a thing.
☝️🤓 it’s because the further you move toward the earth’s poles, the lower the angle of the sun is at the hottest parts of the day, meaning the radiation hits your whole body, causing it to feel 10-20 degrees warmer than the thermometer reading will tell you. People from tropical climes, aka close to the equator, are used to the sun’s radiation hitting a much smaller target- their head and shoulders.
Also the further you move toward the poles the more pronounced the difference between the length of day and night is. Worst part of a far-north (or south) heatwave is it doesn’t get dark long enough for meaningful cooling.

Akari and Rei get to know each other better. Rei teaches her to carve a simple whistle.
Akari trudged into the village, tired and aching from her latest attempts at logging more information about the shinx that lived in the nearby Fieldlands.
Pikachu had been difficult, as he often was, when the shinx spotted her and tried to attack. Barely listening to her and just doing whatever he pleased, even when it ended in him getting hurt. She was trying to work on that, but he just make it so hard.
She really didn't know what to do with him. She didn't have a clue how to cross whatever barrier there was that kept him from trusting her to help him. She felt like she was trying hard enough to connect to him to be a good partner. But obviously she was doing something wrong, even if she had no idea what.
Sometimes, she was really jealous of how well Rei got along with Nocht.
They clicked together like two pieces of a puzzle. Two beans in a pod. They were able to work together like they'd known each other for ages instead of just a couple months. Nocht followed Rei's commands without hesitating, fully trusting Rei to take care of him and lead him right. There was no hesitation, just understanding and teamwork.
Maybe she should just ask him what he did to get the rowlet to like him so much. He must know some trick for them to work so well so quickly. She was sure he would tell her if she asked him.
Even if her pride stung from the thought of having to go to the newest recruit of the Survey Corps for help. She was his senior, she had been part of the Galaxy Team longer than he had. She should have been the one guiding and helping him through the trials of Hisui.
Instead, she was struggling and he was taking to the place like a duck to water.
She gave her head a rough shake, smacking her own cheeks sharply to banish the thought. No! That was mean to think! And it was wrong!
Rei didn't struggle with pokemon, but he struggled with other things.
He was lonely and missed his family. He didn't come to Hisui because he wanted to. He said the last thing he remembered was going to bed before waking up on Prelude Beach. He never even had the chance to say goodbye to his family before he ended up there.
Not like she did. She knew where they were and how they felt about her life in Jubilife Village and how much they understood what she was doing and why she wanted to do it.
(Not that her leaving had been very dramatic anyway. She was young enough to work, so she went out and worked and that was… Fine…)
Rei hadn't had that. He couldn't send his family letters, or send them presents, or ask how his friends from home were doing, or- or- Anything!
Rei was alone in Hisui, with no way home and no way to see his family again.
It was obvious that he struggled with how lonely his life was now.
She and Professor Laventon were the only ones who really reached out to him. Everyone else tended to avoid or just ignore him, all of them too unsure of what to think about him to try getting to actually know him. The security corps were the only ones who really talked to him, and that was usually them just checking to make sure he was packed up to leave the village. A bare minimum that was part of their jobs.
Which Akari thought was dumb. It wasn't like any of them were from Hisui either!
Rei was nice! Sure, he talked kinda weird and used weird sayings and got along with pokemon way better than everyone else did. And, well, he did fall out of the sky…
But! He was nice! Really, really nice! He told fun stories to the kids and even play with them if they asked him to. He tried to greet every member of the village guards by name whenever he passed them and would ask how their day's were going, even if he wasn't leaving the village. He would offer to help people if he saw they were having trouble with something or just needed extra hands.
He was just- Genuinely nice. It wasn't fair that people were so nervous about him just because of how he got there.
Akari puffed up in determination.
Okay! She would ask him for help with pikachu. He was sure to be honest with her, because he was always honest.
Plan in mind, Akari dropped her pokedex notes off at Galaxy Hall for the professor to look through and went looking for the newest recruit to the Galaxy Team.
She found him sitting in the grass by the shrine with his crafting kit out and Nocht tucked into his side. That didn't look like one of the Galaxy ones, though…
Oh, right, Laventon said Rei's found something else that had belonged to his grandparents in a distortion. Some kind of whittling box? It had sounded similar to a crafting kit to her. And it looked at lot like one too, even if the box looked fancier than the kits she was used to. It was a deep red, with yellow accents and crests engraved into it. The tools looked kinda odd though. They were metal, but something about them looked different to her. It didn't look like they'd been made of iron…
It sounded like Rei was humming as he whittled away at a single stick in his hands, several more stacked up beside him and waiting to be worked on next. There were a lot of curled shavings at the end but, for some reason, he wasn't actually cutting them off.
"Rei? What are you doing?"
Rei looked up at her and smiled. He paused his work long enough to wave hello to her.
"Oh, hi Akari! I'm just making some feather sticks for the next time I head out of the village."
"Feather… Sticks?" She asked, sitting down next to him. Rei gave a confirming hum, turning back to the stick he was carving up.
"Yup. Grandpa and I used to make them whenever we were planning to go camping. They're really good for tinder to help start a fire, since all the little shavings catch quickly and help the larger pieces they're connected to start burning."
"Okay… That's actually kinda neat," she said, nodding slowly. She was able to picture how that worked in her head. "And since they're all still on the bigger stick, it's harder to lose them when you travel, right?"
"Exactly! It's… Been a long time since I've made them." Rei's smile looked sad as he said that.
"Why? Doesn't your grandpa still make them?"
Her friend paused again, his face suddenly much sadder.
"No. He… He can't make them with me anymore. He, uh, passed away a few years ago." Rei said softly, looking down at his lap as he answered. Akari let out a small gasp, hands covering her mouth.
"Oh! Oh, I'm sorry! I didn't mean to-" Rei waved off her apology.
"It's okay. I'm not upset about it. You didn't know, after all," He said gently. "Grandpa passed when I was twelve. So, I've had time to let go."
"What… Um… Happened to him?" She asked before she could stop herself. Akari wanted to kick herself as soon as the words left her. What was she saying! Her friend was sad! "No, uh, actually, you-"
"He'd come down with something one winter and never quite shook it off. He insisted it was just a chest cold every time Grandma or I started worrying about it. The rainy seasons always made the cough he'd gotten much worse, so he loved to go out and enjoy warm, sunny days whenever they came," Rei said, his voice quiet. She immediately fell silent, letting him talk. "He fell asleep sitting in the yard while Grandma and I went out to do some shopping. And he just… Didn't wake back up when we came home. Grandma cried a lot, but she said he'd been warm and happy and that was a good way to go."
"I still miss him sometimes. I'll be doing something and think to myself "Grandpa would like this" and then I remember that I can't show it to him. Or I would find myself turning around, just about to call to him, and then I'll realize he's not there."
Slowly, he started work on the feather sticks again. Both of them sitting in the grass as he quietly worked, the breeze ruffling their hair.
She felt bad now. She didn't mean to make him sad. Akari fussed with the edge of her kimono. What should she do? Should she leave? Should she stay? Should she try to cheer him up again?
"But… I know it's okay that he's not here. He's still looking out for me, I'm sure of it." She looked over at Rei and the small, soft smile that had appeared on his face. "He's probably with the rest of my ancestors, now. Looking out for everyone and trying to help guide me when he can. That's what Arthur and Guinevere did, after all."
Right, in those journals Rei's grandma wrote, their family's spirits looked out for them from the beyond. To help them. (That sounded nice. Knowing that, even if they were gone, they were still looking out for you.)
"That's… That's good." She said softly. She gave a small smile of her own. "Maybe he's doing what all grandpa's do now. Yelling about us kids being too loud or silly and telling us all the ways we should be doing things instead."
Rei let out a laugh.
"Probably! I wouldn't put it past him to be correcting everything I'm trying to do. That, or he's yelling at me to start make whistles and frog sticks for all the kids in the village so they can drive their parents up the walls."
"He wouldn't!" She said laughing. She didn't know what a frog stick was, but it sound like it was something noisy.
"Oh yes he would. Grandpa was nice, but he was also a trouble maker! He'd make all kinds of whistles and flutes and clappers and just hand them out during fairs and parties to every kid he saw. I honestly have no idea how many parents had to deal with their kids playing loud whistles in the house because of him!"
Akari giggled at the picture, an oldman version of Rei popping into her head and sneakily handing the kids around the village little wooden whistles to play with behind the backs of all the parents.
Rei's grandfather sounded kind of like Hinamori-san, who'd lived down the road in from her in her old village.
"Well, I know someone from home who was a little like that…"
The two spent the rest of the day trading stories about the places they came from, laughing loud and hard as they did. Akari eventually pulled out her own crafting kit to try her own hand at making some feather sticks to take on her next survey trip and learned how to make a small wooden whistle from her friend when he asked if she knew how to make them. Neither of them had cut their hands while working because of their laughter, and Akari quite like her new whistle.
(Rei gifted the one he'd made to show it was done to Zizu when she'd wandered over from the training grounds to see what was going on. He'd said it would be a good way to get people's attention without having to yell. She'd looked quite happy about the small gift.)
Her cheeks hurt from the laughter but she was happy to know so much about her friend now.
It wouldn't be much until much later, as she went back to her own unit to turn in for the night, that she realized she'd completely forgotten to ask Rei for help with Pikachu. She'd huffed at her cooking dinner, and debated going over to Rei's unit to ask before it got too late.
Except… It wasn't like the day had been a waste just because she hadn't. She'd gotten closer to Rei, learned a knew skill, and generally had a nice time doing something other than worrying about her survey work.
And that was just as good.
She'd just have to ask for his help on a different day. Tomorrow was supposed to be a quiet day, Rei had said he was going to stay in the village for a little bit before he went out into the field again. She could ask him then for help.
Maybe they could just spend another day like this together while they were at it. That actually sounded really nice, now that she'd thought of it.
Akari nodded to herself with a smile. That sounded like a perfect plan to her.
AN: I know that, by the game's logic, Akari should be the better crafter of the two. But I'm putting my own spin on this logic by making her the more refined craftswoman of the two. She has fewer things she knows how to make compared to her friend, but she makes them at a much better quality than Rei does. Rei knows how to make far more things (especially whittled projects) but his are much simpler than the rest of the Survey Corps' stuff. They're kids projects compared to the fancy things Akari can do. He makes things for work and a few things just for fun, so he tends to only work as much as he needs to get something functional for whatever he's doing.
That said, Nocht's pokeball is very fancy looking bc Rei sometimes just sits and carves patterns into it when he's bored. It makes it visually eye-catching and easy to recognize. He does this with all of the pokemon he catches that he grows especially close to. He likes making their balls seem unique and special for them.
The toolbox Rei is using used to belong to his grandfather, who made fun kitschy things for fairs and events. Things that parents or kids would want to bring home that were fairly cheap. He could make much fancier things (he ran a furniture store!) but the kit was usually for his smaller projects. The tools are not, in fact, iron or steel. They're a special metal fae use that's much safer for them to handle than cold iron. His were/are magical and meant to last for far, far longer than any normal human tools, even if they were used constantly.
