Iwaizumi didn’t answer. Instead, his grip on his suitcase tightened, turning his knuckles white. Viciously chewing on his lip he avoided your gaze, instead staring holes in the air above you. That was until he finally managed to speak up. »Thank you, [y/n]«

You knew what he meant. It wasn’t just a simple thank you for waking up early to say goodbye again before he left with his family, it wasn’t just him thanking you out of custody, no, it was so much more. So much he couldn’t say without breaking down right here.

Even though the sight of him in front of the house where he spent his entire life in, where you two made so many memories together, his whole life in his hands and ready to leave, broke your heart into a million pieces, you couldn’t help but smile fondly at him. He followed his dreams, he took everything into his own hands and made sure to make himself happy.

And who were you to stop him from doing so?

Forcing a chuckle out of you, you let your eyes wander over his figure. »I have already told you, you shouldn’t thank me today unless you want me to break down« you tried joking, swallowing down a lump in your throat while simultaneously blinking away the few tears that started to form in your eyes.

You could always cry later.

Iwaizumi too began to smile at you, staring into the distance as if he was reliving some memories. »Yeah, I guess so. I’m sorry«

»Don’t apologize« you simply said, the corners of your mouth still slightly upturned »Or you’ll really make me cry«

The young man only nudged you slightly. »Can’t have you crying in front of my parents, hm?« he teased. Even though he appeared almost unbothered and indifferent, you didn’t fail to notice how he started to blink more frequently, his adam’s apple jumping up and down as he swallowed.

As you wiped your eyes with the back of your hand you let out a muted laugh. »I would prefer not to« you answered, immediately biting your cheek afterwards.

»Come here« Iwaizumi sighed, letting go of his baggage as he opened his arms, only for you to jump into his embrace immediately.

You didn’t care that you were in public, you didn’t care that his parents were right there, sitting in the car, possibly watching you two. Because right now all you needed was him, before he left you standing here, alone.

Feeling his strong arms around your waist you pushed yourself closer to him, afraid to let go. You were relishing this moment, being in Iwaizumi’s arms for the last time for who knows how long.

Neither of you wanted to let go, instead clinging onto this last shared moment of vulnerability. Your slightly shaking bodies were pressed together, both of you taking in each other’s warmth and smell, scared to let go. What if you would forget how he felt in your arms? Or how his warmth always gave you comfort? His deep chuckles or the way he muttered curses under his breath whenever someone got on his nerves?

»I’ll miss you« you finally whispered, tightening your arms around him even further »I’ll miss you a lot«

Iwaizumi hid his face, his breathing unsteady as he tried to calm himself down. He wouldn’t break down, not now. He didn’t want you to see him like this, on the brink of tears, so close to letting himself fall on his knees and start sobbing. No, he needed to stay strong, he needed to move along, needed to go forward.

And yet he didn’t want to let you go.

»I’ll miss you too« he answered after long moments of silence. »So, so much«

»But you have to go, right?« you continued, your figure shaking from how hard you were trying to suppress your tears.

Iwaizumi took a few breaths. »Yeah«

»It’s okay« You stepped away from him, arms hanging limp on your sides.»Have a safe flight, Iwa«

There was more, so much more you wanted to say to him, so why couldn’t you open your mouth? It pained you seeing him turn around, leaving you behind like this, broken and hurt. »Yeah« he only replied, his eyes trained on the sidewalk below him.

He didn’t dare to look back once he turned around, afraid of what he might see. Afraid that once he saw your slumped figure he would run towards you, scoop you into his arms and never let you go. He was certain he would leave everything behind, no matter the consequences, just to stay by your side.

But he couldn’t. He had to leave.

Don’t go. Please don’t. Not yet. Not like this.

»Iwa« you called out again, your voice shaky and swift.

Iwaizumi cursed at himself as he turned around immediately, almost like he was waiting for you to call out for him.

Weak legs brought you closer to him until you stood in front of him again, his sad eyes contradicting the fond smile that was on his lips. Again, you threw yourself at him, your two bodies pressed so closely together that it felt like nothing could tear you apart.

Nothing but your time running out.

»Please don’t« you heard Iwaizumi whisper, sounding so fragile like never before. »Please don’t say it«

»I have to« you only said, shaking your head, before hiding your face in the fabric of his shirt. Your voice came out shaky one again, now unable to completely suppress your tears and letting the first ones wet his shirt. »Because I know if I don’t, I will regret it for the next four years. Hell, probably for the rest of my life«

After all, nobody knew what might happen, right?

»I love you« you choked out, now openly crying and pulling Iwaizumi closer to you, never wanting to let him go. »I love you«

His warm arms pressed you against him as he kissed your forehead, eyes closed as his own tears started to fall. »I’m sorry« he pressed out »I’m sorry for leaving you behind«

»I know« you answered »It’s okay«

It was a pitiful sight, you two on the sidewalk, both afraid to let this precious but painful moment slip through your fingertips and be forgotten.

Your sight blurred, you saw his luggage standing there, right next to the car that would drive him away. Away from you. »Please don’t forget me«

»I won’t«

And as he was driving away, he looked through the window, staring up at the clouded sky.

He would never forget you, he couldn’t.

After all, how could you forget the one person you truly loved?

»I can’t believe you were out with him« Daishou scoffed, eyebrows furrowed in anger. »Kuroo? Really? Out of everyone else you know? It just had to be fucking Kuroo« Each word was spat out like venom, hitting you with such hate, you almost felt like stumbling back when his words hit you.

Biting your tongue you looked at him, eyes big and pleading. »Suguru, listen, I-« you tried, only to be interrupted by your fuming boyfriend.

»I can’t believe you‘re actually spending all your free time with him but can’t find any moment to spend with me? You know, your fucking boyfriend?« He narrowed his eyes as he spoke, his voice deep and accusatory. »That’s a bit fucked up, don’t you think?«

He was right, wasn’t he?

He was your boyfriend, no one else. And yet here you were, meeting your male friends and happily spending time with them, like you didn’t have a loving and devoted boyfriend sitting at home.

Yeah, what made you believe that he was in the wrong here when he has been nothing but doting towards you?

»Suguru, I-« you wanted to speak up, desperately wanting to clear the air between the two of you. You didn’t notice how he had moved from his place, coming dangerously closer and finally towering over your own figure.

»No, you shut the fuck up« Daishou spat back, his voice growing louder and louder as he looked down at you, your figure shirking under his gaze.

How could someone look at you with that much hate, but still loving you at the same time?

»You fucking listen to me now« he demanded, grabbing you by the shoulders, digging his nails into your clothing.

»You think this is funny, huh? Going out, parading yourself like some kind of whore?« Daishou huffed, pushing your body back, until your back was met with the closed door. You barely registered it, every sense focused on the man in front of you.

You needed to calm him down somehow, you needed to show him that you loved him. That he was right, that you truly believed that he was right.

»I am not-« you wanted to defend yourself again, mentally cursing at yourself.

You only made him angrier.

»Shut it!« Daishou yelled, pulling you away from the apartment door, before slamming you back into it, letting a breathless yelp escape your trembling lips.

Your body wanted to jolt up in pain, yet you were forced to stay still as Daishou‘s grip on you only tightened.

»You think I‘m fucking dumb or something? You think I wouldn’t notice, huh?« he continued to yell, face turning redder and redder every passing second.

Unable to form a coherent sentence you only looked at him with wide eyes, silently praying for him to lose his grip on you.

But why would he? Why should he? He was hurt, you hurt him. Wasn’t it fair for him to hurt you in return? »Tell me!« he demanded, a growl itching in his throat.

»I don’t know what you want me to say! I love you, I don’t get it!« you exclaimed in terror, your whole body shaking in fear.

You loved him, couldn’t he see? What more could you say? What could you do to make him stop?

»Sure you don’t fucking get it« Daishou scoffed. »Do you need me to remind you of your place?« he threatened. You wanted to sigh in relief as his right arm let you go, thinking everything would get better from this point.

You really were so clueless, huh? So naive?

You shouldn’t have gotten your hopes high. As soon as he let your shoulder go, his hand was at the top of your head, grabbing a fistful of your hair. Forcefully he pushed your head back, slamming it against the door.

»Don’t got anything to say for yourself, huh?« he sneered. »What did I tell you about your place here? You don’t get to make the rules«

»I know, I know, I’m not trying to, I don’t want to« you tried to convince him, wanting to shake your head, doing just anything but still being restricted by his tight grip. »Please, please, let me go, I don’t know, I swear, I love you, please!« At this point you wanted nothing more than the pain to stop, this whole argument to end. Willing to do anything you continued to plead for mercy, choking out short cries as you gasped for air.

»Stop playing the clueless bitch!« Daishou yelled, his face only a short distance away from yours. You didn’t even feel the small drops of spit that hit you as he yelled, focused on every move he made, afraid of what might happen next.

»I am not playing!« you choked, almost whimpered in return. »Please«

»Stop fucking begging like you’re the victim here!« he demanded, pushing you back agan, before he let you go, rubbing his temples, like he tried to calm himself down - almost like he told himself he was going too far.

But was he really? He only wanted you to love him like he loved you, not any less. Wasn’t he right to go off like this?

»I’m the one that was wronged! I am the one that’s hurt!« he reminded you, poking your chest with his index finger. He shortly laughed at himself, shaking his head, before his eyes met yours again. »You’re so full of shit« he claimed, grabbing your body by your upper arms. »So full of fucking shit« His fingers curled, bruising you as his nails carved into your skin.

»Want me to break up with you so you can go and fuck that wimp?« he asked, his voice surprisingly quiet as he eyes you, your own eyes widening in fear.

»No! I‘ve told you, I love you, I need you!« you whimpered, his voice, his words hurting you more than any punch, kick or fall you ever endured in your life. »And, and, you- you know Kuroo‘s just a friend!« you added whispering, only to hear Daishou scoff again.

»A friend my ass! If he was just a friend you wouldn’t be fucking around with him!« he claimed, his voice growing louder again, as he gestured rapidly with his hands.

»But I am not!« you desperately defended yourself. A part of you wanted to stomp your foot in frustration despite being frozen in fear, yet you knew better than that. »I have no reason to, I don’t want anything from him, I love you!«

»Bullshit!« Daishou growled and rolled his eyes, obviously annoyed. Any bit of patience he regained previously was running dangerously thin.

»No it’s not!« At this point you didn’t know what you could say to convince him. It was like he was fixated on his beliefs, no matter what you said or did, like you were stuck.

However, as soon as those words left your mouth, your head was thrown to the side with enough force that it made you tumble. Your eyes stayed shut, pressing back every tear as Daishou’s voice reached your ears. »Don’t fucking talk back to me!«

»Try doing that again« he spat out, pushing you to the side violently, first making you stumble down on your weak knees before hitting you again, causing you to fall on the ground before him.

»I’m sorry« you whispered out your apology, staring at his feet. You were afraid to look up, afraid of the hateful look you knew you would see.

»No one will love you like I do« Daishou crouched down and grabbed your chin, forcing your eyes to meet his. »You hear me? No one and certainly not Kuroo fucking Tetsurou, no matter what he said to you, do you understand?«

»I don’t love him, I don't want anyone else to love me, I love you!« you resumed your pleading, wide eyes shining with tears.

»You sure do have a shitty way of showing that« he smirked, shaking his head. »I’m so disappointed in you«

Disappointed.

»You used to be so much better« he sighed.

»Suguru, please«

»Please, please« he mocked your desperate tone, squeezing your chin. »Please what, huh?«

Please let go of me. Please stop. Please believe me. Please, anything. Please, please, please.

Daishou rolled his eyes at your silence, realising your face with one final forceful push before he got up, turning his back on you.

»Get the fuck out« he demanded.

»What?« you asked dumbfounded, staring at his back with a shocked expression.

A heavy sigh escaped Daishou’s lips as he spoke up again. »I said, get the fuck out. I don’t want to see your face« Hisvoice was cold and distant, freezing your blood immediately.

You were silent for a few moments, trying to process his request, no, his order.

He couldn’t mean that, could he? He wouldn’t. He wouldn’t just kick you out.

»You- you don’t mean that« you whispered, more to yourself than to him, shaking your head.

»Oh no, I‘m pretty sure I do« His voice remained stoic and stiff, just like his stature a few feet in front of you. »I really can’t stand seeing you tonight«

»Suguru, baby-« you tried again, wanting nothing more than to solve this argument immediately, willing to do whatever it took of you.

Anything, just anything, please.

»No, you don’t get to fucking ›baby‹ me right now« he only said before making his way back to the living room, only stopping in the doorway. You hoped he would take back what he said, letting you stay here tonight, willing to forget what happened, even just for a few hours. Still, he managed to crush your hope completely with his last words towards you. »Get your ass out of here. And don’t even think about coming back today«

“Bye guys! Don’t forget the first meeting on Monday, 9am sharp!” You wave to Konoha, Yaku and Gin as they leave, the last group to depart from the ramen restaurant besides you and Atsumu. “Man, I’m so full.” Atsumu complains as he rubs his stomach. “I shouldn’t have ordered a second bowl.” You hum in response. “Well I did tell you not to, so…” “Don’t even say it.” Atsumu warns menacingly. You turn to him, meeting his narrowed-eye gaze with your smug smile. “I. Told. You. So.” “That’s it.” He charges at you, making you turn and sprint away, laughing at the top of your lungs. You don’t stop running, making your way across campus. Atsumu’s hot on your tail and you can hear him laughing and struggling to keep up with you. You zig zag, making sharp turns and trying to shake him off. “Oh, c’mon! My stomach is gonna burst!” You laugh again at his loud complaints but you slow down, letting him crash into your back and grab you. “Gotcha!” Before you know it he’s lifting you up, carrying you a few feet while you laugh again. “‘Tsumu! Put me down!” Both of you are struggling to breath, from running and laughing.

“Alright, alright, down ya go.” Atsumu gently lowers you down, still giggling. You’re also still laughing, trying to catch your breath. You didn’t have nearly as much to eat at dinner but you can feel the food sloshing in your stomach. “Oh, my stomach hurts now.” “Ya, and how do ya think I feel?” Atsumu pants out. While you wait for your heart rate to come down you check your surroundings as you realize you both ran to the small park on campus. It’s a secret, hidden oasis, shielded from the main hubbub of campus life. But it offers a little respite, with a small pond filled with fish and frogs and wildlife. The setting sun reflects off the pond’s surface and the spring peepers chirp as they wake up. A few benches are set up near the water’s edge in front of the running path that connects the park to campus. A few students are jogging along it now, but the park itself is empty.

“C’mon, let’s sit so you can catch your breath old man.” You snicker at Atsumu’s offended glare but he joins you on a bench. “Oh I’m sorry, who’s been joining Bokuto in the gym more? It’s definitely not you.” He teases back. You shake your head. “Because Bokuto thinks a 4 mile jog is a warm up. And you guys get to the gym at 5am. I’m still sleeping then!” “Well ya, we don’t hafta share the space with scrubs still sleepin’.” “OI!” You shove his shoulder and he cackles. You pretend to pout but you have no problem with skipping their morning workouts, choosing the comfort of your own bed instead. It’s quiet between you both, a comfortable silence filled with the sounds of birds and spring peepers.

“Are ya excited to finally have your own segment for the club?” You turn back to Atsumu to answer his question, smiling wide. “Yes, I can’t believe it’s actually happening.” Atsumu nods. “I know, I remember when ya told me about it. It wasn’t even something ya were gunnin for.” “Yeah!” You nod your head in emphasis. “But I think people are really going to like it.” “Well,” Atsumu leans back on the bench and lets his arm rest along the backrest. “The first thing that’s gonna draw people in is the name, which Safe Space - ya that’s enticing. And the jockey is the next big draw - you’re a natural on the mic so it’s gonna go off without a hitch. Finally, the content - and honestly I can safely say this is going to be the best show that’s been on the air here for as long as I can remember.” “Really?” You ask skeptically. “What about The Hot Seat? That was your baby.” Atsumu waves his hand. “Nah, good riddance to that old show. It was problematic. People don’t need that shit in their lives anymore.” You can’t help the warmth that spreads through you at Atsumu’s words - he and Osamu were both ok with The Hot Seat being cancelled but they had put a lot of hard work into it and now it was officially removed from the radio schedule. That left a gaping hole, one that Kita was ready to fill with something that would bring sustenance to the campus airwaves (his words, not yours. You were just thrilled to be given the chance to make your own show.) The cancellation of The Hot Seat left the Miya twins without roles in the club, which Atsumu was fine with helping out behind the scenes, but Osamu…

“Are you sure you’re okay with Osamu taking over the News segment?” You hesitate. “And me, being the new club President?” Atsumu nods resolutely. “Of course. My brother, despite the fact that he’s a scrub, won’t mess up the News. He’ll do his job and do it well.” He looks over to you and smiles. “And there’s no one better to be the new President than you.” You feel a blush on your face and glance away, looking over the pond. It was a huge surprise to you when Kita announced that Osamu would be the News jockey, and an even bigger shock when he asked you to be the new club president. He still wants to be part of the club but with his last year of uni approaching he said he has to dedicate his time to his studies to graduate. You remember crying when Kita offered you the new position, informing you that everyone in the club voted for you to lead them. That of course made you cry more, and you were bestowed with a rare hug from Kita.

But you’re not taking it for granted - you said that you would do all that you can to help the radio club when you joined, and you promised to Kita and all the radio club members that you’ll do all that you can to uphold that. But you can’t help but wonder what Atsumu is going to do with the club.

You voice that question to him now and watch him shrug his shoulders. “I’m not sure, honestly. I’ll still help behind the scenes, maybe assist with some show recordings and stuff. I thought about starting a quick fashion segment but I think that’d be too exhausting to keep up with.” You hum. “Yeah, I agree.” Atsumu clears his throat. “Actually, I was gonna see if you wanted help with Safe Space.” You look over quickly, and you must have a wild look on your face to make Atsumu bark out a laugh. “Well ya, it’s gonna be a lot of work to organize the guests and the topics, and now ya got your club president duties, makin sure us knuckleheads are stayin on top of things. If ya want I can be your producer for Safe Space.”

You’re speechless. You’d be lying if you said you weren’t nervous about how you were going to run Safe Space with your new responsibilities, all on top of going to school full time. But here was Atsumu, driven and tenacious Atsumu, willing to help you with your show but only behind the scenes. “Are you sure?” You can’t help but ask. “You belong behind the mic, you’ve always said that.”

Atsumu smiles, his eyes softening around the edges. “Nothin would be more satisfyin than helpin you on Safe Space. It’s a great show and it deserves to be great.” Any words that you could have used to reply to him are caught in your throat and you can’t do anything except exhale shakily and bring a hand to your chest. Your heart is beating rapidly, kicked into overdrive by Atsumu’s admission. With Atsumu still looking at you, you nod your head in agreement.

Atsumu smiles wider, and in a move that surprises you he grabs your other hand that rests on the bench. You look down to where your hand is now enveloped in his but you don’t pull yours away.

“Do you know what today’s date is, Y/N?” Atsumu asks softly. You shake your head, honestly not sure of anything else going on in the world except you and Atsumu sitting on this bench together. Atsumu reaches into his pocket with his free hand and pulls out a round chip. You immediately recognize the 8-month sobriety chip and can’t help the gasp that escapes past your lips. “Eight months ago was the best day of my life.” You pull your gaze away from the chip and look at Atsumu, tilting your head in confusion. He smiles again, and you can see the first signs of apprehension in his eyes.

“Eight months ago was the best day of my life, because the person I’m in love with forgave me for my biggest mistake.”

The air is almost punched out of you again, leaving you physically and emotionally winded. But Atsumu doesn’t let you catch your breath. “Eight months since she told me to hold onto this chip, and give it back when time has passed. Eight months for me to fall even more in love with her, for her tenacity, her perseverance, her compassion and her grace. Eight months for me to fully understand my mistake and forgive myself, because forgiving myself was the first step to growing. Eight months for me to become the person worthy of being with her.” He pauses now, glancing to the side. “If she wants.” The little afterthought seemed to shake some of Atsumu’s confidence, and you feel his hand shaking where it holds yours. The light from the sunset is bright enough for you to see tears in his eyes, but you know that they are tears of happiness. You know, because you feel the same tears in your eyes.

You reach over with your equally shaking hand and take the sobriety chip from yours. You’ve been sober since that night, a full eight months, and you’ve been attending your therapy sessions religiously. In that time you knew when to ask for help from your friends, and knew when and how to help yourself. You worked through understanding whether you were forgiving Atsumu for yourself or for him - you realized it was a bit of both and you knew that was just fine. You worked through your emotions and feelings, spending just enough time with Atsumu to know that every time he left, you wished for five more minutes. Or every time your hands brushed his, you longed for more - more something, more anything. You knew that you both were building towards this moment, but the fact that Atsumu never pushed you for anything more and respected your forgotten wishes all those months ago was all the confirmation you needed to take your relationship to the next level.

You take your hand from Atsumu’s, watching the apprehension flit across his face. You don’t make him wait long before bringing your hand to his neck to pull him down into a passionate kiss. He exhales through his nose in surprise but returns the kiss with fervor. It’s just as sweet and gentle as you expected from someone who acts so brash and loud. It’s a kiss that’s been months in the making, with both of your feelings being apparent but just needing the right place and time. It’s a kiss that makes a voice in your head yell finally!

You feel like you could kiss Atsumu for ages but it soon turns very wet from tears running down yours and Atsumu’s faces. You both chuckle wetly and you pull Atsumu to you. His arms wrap around your shoulders and you find your place close to his heart.

“I love you.” Atsumu whispers in your ear, his voice wobbly from the failed suppressed tears. You chuckle again, your own failed suppressed tears dampening his t-shirt. “I love you too.”

You both stay on the bench, letting the sun set and the air chill. Your whispered affirmations of love heal the months-long wounds on both of your hearts, and bring your two fated paths together at last.

A/N: Wow, this is it! The last A/N for this SMAU. I just have to say, thank you. To everyone who has read this story, and for everyone who will. I started this small idea and was intrigued with the SM format but I wasn’t jazzed about my writing. But I thought if I could put it out there and have one more person read the story and like it, then I’d be happy. But I was floored with the response - it not only made me excited to post each chapter and talk with you all about the story, but it lit a fire in me and made me way more confident about my writing. So, from the bottom of my heart, thank you so much for that. I have really enjoyed seeing what everyone has had to say, from the good and the bad.

I will be back with another story soon (very soon!) and I am hoping to post more short drabbles. Instead of letting the ideas get caught in my head I can put them down here, thanks to you guys. Until next time! ❤️

»Just do it« he simply replied, motioning for you to get off him.

»But you‘re so comfortable!« you whined, tightening your arms around him and snuggling deeper into his chest.

He was warm, his strong arms around you as his fingers ghosted absentmindedly over your back. You two haven’t said a lot, simply basking in each other’s warmth and silently praying for this moment of sweet intimacy not to end.

»Please?« Iwaizumi asked you and kissed your temple. »I promise we can go back to bed later«

Sighing deeply you finally lifted yourself up and stared at your boyfriend with a playfully annoyed look. »You know, you do owe me some more cuddles after this« you mumbled and shook your head, before getting up.

»You‘ll be getting all the cuddles you want later« the male replied and grabbed your hand »But for now, come with me, alright?«

You didn’t know what to expect and to be fair, you didn’t think much about it. All you wanted to do was lay down with Iwaizumi again, his presence and steady breathing lull you to sleep.

Safe to say you were quite confused when you found yourself standing in your boyfriends small kitchen, with him fiddling with his phone. You could hear him cursing under his breath, before soft music filled the room, his phone laying on the countertop.

»Uh, Hajime?« you asked, eyebrows furrowed in confusion. »What-« However, you didn’t get to finish your your sentence, since you were immediately pushed into him, his arms around your lower back.

»Put your arms around me« he simply demanded, his voice hushed and raspy. You immediately did so, although you couldn’t help but look at him confused.

As soon as your boyfriend caught your bewildered expression, he immediately let out a small laugh and kissed your forehead. »I can’t dance, you know?« he simply said, before he started to move around, swaying your bodies back and forth in his kitchen, careful to not let you hit anything.

After a few moments of you two enjoying the silence, you sighed with a warm smile on your lips. »I didn’t think you‘d remember, you know« you hummed, looking back at your boyfriend.

»You know, I should be offended. You really thought I‘d forget?« he chuckled.

You only hummed again, letting your head fall against his body, closing your eyes. »Maybe?«

Iwaizumi only shook his head as he giggled quietly, doing his best to keep his body steady to not disturb you. »Never«

Truth to be told, Iwaizumi never failed to amaze you.

Maybe it was the way he held you after a long day, reassuring you and keeping you close.

Or how he always seemed to notice whenever something was wrong and always knew what you needed.

It could be the way he remembered those small details about you that no one else seemed to notice, like your small dream to slow dance at night when the whole world was asleep and feeling like you two were the only people in the world.

Or was it how he always made sure that you took care of yourself, no matter the circumstances.

And maybe it was simply the way he truly made you happy.

Oh.

So this was love, huh?

Before you could stop yourself, your pressed yourself even closer to him, fully engulfing over his presence.

He was here. Here with you, slow dancing at night im his kitchen with you, just like you had always imagined. Holding you close and hoping to never let this moment go.

It was something small, a moment no one else would remember, something seemingly so insignificant and yet it meant the world to both of you. Swaying around, only thinking about each other, basking in the warmth and comfort you offered.

And you knew you didn’t want to let go of him. Not now, not ever, because this person right here felt like home.

Iwaizumi was your home. Your safe haven. The one man you never wanted to lose.

»Hey, you alright?« he whispered concerned, stopping in his movements. His hands still on your lower back, he rubbed them up and down.

You looked up at him, staring into his green eyes lovingly. »Hm? Yeah« you answered sleepily, a lovesick smile spreading on your lips.

Soon you found yourself resting your head on his chest again, closing your eyes as you listened to his heartbeat.

»Everything‘s perfect« you whispered.

You knew that even if the world burned down around you, you wouldn’t change anything.

Iwaizumi Hajime was the home you never knew you needed and yet always longed for.

»Uh, [y/n]?«

»Uh, [y/n]?«

After parting your ways with Yachi and Akane, Kuroo and you decided to stay at the park, sitting down on a bench by an old tree. The wood was already chipped, metal rusty and cigarettes were littered on the floor, even though everyone could throw their tobacco cylinder in the special bin right beside the bench.

The black haired male sat next to you, fingers fiddling in his lap as he turned towards you.

A few seconds later he still hasn’t said a thing, so you raised your brows looking at him.

»Please don’t get this the wrong way, but-« he started shyly, but quickly stopping to take in a deep breath. He opted to look away from your awaiting gaze, instead staring into the by now cloud-ridden sky. »God, this I don’t even know how to go over this«

Keeping your eyes on your friend, you leaned back slightly. »Kuroo?« you asked.

You stared at him, your eyes mustering his profile, before they landed on his shoulder. Hands itching to reach out and help grounding him, you instead clenched them on your thighs.

Don’t touch him.

Finally Kuroo turned and met your eyes again.

»Are you okay?« he finally asked.

Now it was your turn to fall silent, staring at him with your mouth slightly opened. »Huh? Yeah, why wouldn’t I be?« you finally responded, breaking the silence.

His hazel eyes studied your expression, roaming over you to the point you were convinced Kuroo would notice every small movement you made. »It’s just- I don’t know you haven’t been, uh, yourself lately« he said, his voice calm and steady.

Fuck.

»What the fuck is that supposed to mean?« you immediately asked, your previously relaxed frame shooting up, looking at your friend.

You didn’t mean to sound so defensive. You were well aware that Kuroo simply wanted to look at for you, but how were you going to tell him that there was nothing to be worried about? You were fine after all.

Totally fine. There was no reason to get worked up, right?

»Hey, please, I really didn’t mean to offend you, it’s just-« Kuroo stopped for a moment, appearing to be lost for words. He put his head back and closed his eyes for a second, before speaking again. »I don’t know«

Now you were starting to get impatient.

What does he know? He had no clue, right? He didn’t see or hear anything, right?

You had nothing to worry about, right?

Everything was fine. It had to be. You didn’t want to imagine what would happen if it wasn’t. »Come on, get it out of your system«

Pressing his lips together he opened his eyes again, still refusing to look at you. Instead he studied your surroundings, the sky, trees and the few people walking some distance away from you. »It’s just not the same anymore?«

»You don’t sound so convinced yourself, Kuroo« Your mouth was becoming dry as your heart pumped loudly in your chest.

Please don’t.

»Look, it’s not like I‘m reading into something that’s not there. I know that something‘s different« Kuroo justified.

Of course he noticed. Of course he must be observant. And of course he needed to get to the bottom of it.

»What is it then? Hell, why would anything be different at all?« You looked at him with raised eyebrows, doing your best to ignore the anxiety growing inside you.

If he knew, you‘d be so screwed.

You needed to get out of this. You needed to convince him. Deflect it. Change the topic. Anything.

Somehow managing to keep looking confused and sort of curious, you clenched your fists and slightly pressed your teeth together.

»That’s what I‘m trying to find out!« Kuroo answered, his voice still low and calculating, before his eyes softened. »Please, just- just work with me here«

»Well what do you want from me? You‘re just blabbering none sense!« you only responded, repeatedly swallowing down the small lumps in your throat. Yet, no matter how many times you choked them down, they kept coming back.

Calm. Stay calm.

You could see Kuroo growing impatient. His right leg was bouncing up and down, fingers running through his black hair and scratching his head. You figured he didn’t know what to say or how to phrase it when you noticed his eyes staring holes into the trees behind you. »I want you to be honest with me! Or at least with your brother!«

You knew he chose his words carefully, and yet you couldn’t help but feel offended.

Who was he to accuse you of lying to him? Lying to your own brother? Why did he think that was appropriate of him?

He was in no position to do this.

»I am not lying!« you stated, crossing your arms in front of your chest »Not to you, not to Rin or anyone else! I‘m fine, Jesus Christ!«

Please just drop it.

»Stop pushing everyone away, for god‘s sake!« The black haired man next to you rubbed his face, keeping it momentarily hidden from your gaze.

Don’t.

When he looked at you again, his eyes were soft and worried. »Talk to me. Please« he begged.

»There‘s nothing to talk about« You stood your ground, opting to look away from your good friend.

Get away.

In the corner of your eye you could see Kuroo’s hunched form, pinching the bridge of his nose. He rolled his eyes and sighed before shutting his eyelids.

You needed to go.

The two of you were now sitting in silence, occupied by your own thoughts.

Go, go, go.

»Thank you for today, I had a lot of fun, but I really don’t want to argue with you« you spoke hesitantly, fingers playing in your lap. You slowly rose from your seat, turning to look at Kuroo. »I‘ll get going. I‘m sorry«

»You know, you can be honest with me« Turning around at the sound of your friend‘s voice, you saw him walking closer to you, his eyes pleading for some sort of answer. »Just say Daishou wants you home«

You felt your heart stopping in your chest.

What did he just say?

You licked your lips and tried to reply as nonchalantly as you possibly could. »What does Suguru have to do with this?«

»Everything! Don’t you think we don’t notice how he‘s driving you away from us?« he said frustrated, voice growing louder. Suddenly you felt his warm hand closing around your wrist, keeping you in place. Your eyes widened for a moment, whole body tensing up. Your eyes were glued to your wrist.

Let me go.

Kuroo knew he crossed a line when he took notice of your discomfort, so he loosened his grip around you, yet still keeping you close. He needed to talk to you, he needed to know what was happening, so of course he couldn’t let you just walk away like that. Kuroo only needed you to listen to him, for a second, for a minute. Somehow he hoped that just a tiny bit of your time was enough.

He was convinced that something was wrong, so why wouldn’t you just talk to him? Why we’re you so adamant about telling everything was fine?

»Listen-« he tried again, trying to somehow reason with you, before you yanked your arm away, interrupted him.

»No, Kuroo. I can’t listen to you anymore« Your eyes were stern as you stared at him, establishing a safe distance between you two by taking a few steps back.

Convince him.

»I don’t know what’s going on and you can’t sit here and blame me for spending more time with my boyfriend« you said monotone while shaking your head.

»That‘s not even close to what I‘m doing! You‘re the last person I want to blame!« he claimed, almost whining frustrated. Why wouldn’t you just listen to him?

»Then stop!« you demanded, begging for him to stop with this.

Quiet, quiet, quiet. Just stay quiet.

»I‘m just worried for you!« Kuroo raised his voice, eyebrows furrowed, worry, care and frustration in his eyes.

You rolled your eyes at him, sighing in faked annoyance.

Convince him.

»And I‘m telling you, you don’t have to, Suguru and I are fine!« you tried again, your inner voice pleading for him to drop the current topic.

»I wasn’t asking about him, I asked about you, don’t you fucking understand?« he now yelled, massaging his temple.

And that was when your breathing stopped. You tensed your arms, forcing them to stay put, ignoring the overwhelming desire to shield your face. However, you couldn’t stop your muscles from contracting, pleading and hoping that he didn’t notice.

Please, no.

Kuroo stared at you in disbelief, almost wanting to laugh at the ridiculousness of this situation. Here you were, claiming everything was fine, you were alright and yet you stood on weak knees, eyes pleading.

Swallowing a lump, he took a deep breath. »Sorry. I- I really didn’t mean to-«

»It’s okay. Nothing happened. Let’s just forget about this, alright?« you immediately interrupted, begging him to just stop this conversation right here.

His hazel eyes roamed over your figure. He couldn’t just forget everything. There was no way he would believe that everything was fine after witnessing your distraught state, almost panicking at this topic.

So why was he nodding his head? »Okay« Kuroo finally said.

Just a few seconds later you already turned around, leaving Kuroo frozen in his spot.

There was no way he was wrong.

Pain. Nothing but absolute pain.

That’s the feeling you’re greeted with when you finally emerge from the land of dreams and sleep. You wish you could return to that blissful state of nothingness but your dry as hell throat and throbbing headache prevent that. You can’t help the audible groan that escapes as you let your eyes blink open.

Wow, that was a mistake. Blinding white light brings the pain to a new, unbearable level, and you quickly shut your eyes. Which somehow was an even bigger mistake, as the small movement caused such a strain that sent a jolt of lightning right to the painful pressure in your head.

“Oh my god.” You groan. “Is this hell?”

“I think hell wouldn’t be this bad.”

You let your eyes fall open again, allowing the white walls and ceiling to blind you again. Wait, what in the hell -

You sit up, taking in the unfamiliar surroundings before your eyes meeting the two figures sitting in opposite corners of the room, both distracted with their phones.

“Glad to see yer conscious.” Osamu says lightly, not looking up.

Kenma doesn’t say anything, still tap-tap-tapping away on his phone. You know from experience that he’s absorbed in one of his games and it’s probably best not to disturb him now.

But apparently, sitting upright is disturbing whatever is sloshing around in your stomach and you let another groan loose and clutch your belly.

“Please tell me you aren’t going to get sick again.” Kenma finally speaks, and you see him looking at you with apprehension.

“I don’t think so - wait, again?” The odd duo nod in sync with eerily similar grim looks - it’d be impressive if you didn’t feel like absolute dog shit. “There’s some water and painkillers on the side table for ya.” Osamu turns back to his phone, tapping on it. You turn your head to the side (wincing as you do so) and spot the aforementioned water and painkillers. You don’t hesitate in reaching over, throwing back the pills and downing the glass of water. As you set your glass down, your phone vibrates on the side table. You spot messages lighting up the screen - so many that your phone is in risk of vibrating off the table.

You're curious but even more so about the two...friends? Enemies? Acquaintances? In the room with you. “Um, not that I’m not happy to see either of you guys, but what the heck is going on? Where are we?”

“You should check your phone.” Is the only response he gets from Osamu. And it’s the only verbal response, as Kenma nods in agreement, not looking up. You huff (you can’t help it, you just want answers dammit) but reach to grab your phone from the table. As soon as the bright screen hits your retinas you wince, and when you take in what’s actually on the screen you wince again.

“There’s a group chat in there with Kita-san, that should help answer yer questions.” Osamu shoots you a secretive smile, ignoring your second huff of annoyance and going back to his phone. You unlock your phone, and navigate to your messages, finding even more notifications and texts from your friends. The guilt creeps in as memories of yesterday return. You, spending a small fortune on the drinks and getting ridiculous drunk. You, realizing what you’ve done and nearly spiraling into a pit of despair. But after that it’s really patchy. You were on campus at some point? Kuroo was yelling, which isn’t that surprising. But you remember feeling warm. Not only from the embrace of another, but somewhere in your heart, despite how shitty and upset you were, you knew it was gonna be ok.

You find the group message that Osamu mentioned, and tap the screen to open the messages. But before you can get into it, a new alert pops up: You are about to enter a group chat with a number you have blocked - do you wish to proceed?

You don’t think twice about tapping Yes, knowing that it must mean Atsumu is part of this chat. His connection to this whole mess is still unknown to you but he must be involved if his brother is here. The messages finally open up and you take one look at the group chat name before rolling your eyes and muttering “good lord.”

You look up from your phone, feeling somewhat better at knowing where you are and how you got here but there are still several questions left unanswered. Including the two sitting in the room with you. “The chat didn’t mention why you guys are in here.”

Kenma and Osamu share a glance before sighing at the same time. “Kuro wanted to be in here when you woke up so you wouldn’t be scared and freak out.” Kenma says. “But Atsumu didn’t want him here alone with you.” “And Kuroo didn’t want ya to be alone with my stupid twin, so there was this huge disagreement about the whole thing.” You could hear the eye roll in Osamu’s tone and had to stifle a smile. “But everyone agreed that ya should have someone in here when ya wake up.”

“Okay, so why two?” You ask. Kenma doesn’t bother to hide his irritation and rolls his eyes. “Atsumu doesn’t trust me and Kuro doesn’t trust him.” Osamu heaves another sigh and shakes his head. “They’re all idiots.” You couldn’t help but agree, but the guilt from your actions still churn in your stomach. The room is silent as you scroll through your phone. There’s nearly a hundred messages from you friends, and even Kita and Osamu, all asking where you are and if you’re alright. But there’s also another feeling, one that’s been festering for awhile now if you had to admit it. Which, honestly, you don’t want to. But it has to be said.

“I’m not a child.” Your tone finally makes Kenma and Osamu look up and give you their attention. “Or some pathetic, fragile being that needs to be coddled. I made a mistake, and I get that it’s sometimes harder for me to work through my problems. But having people fawn over me, even doing so with the best intentions, is insulting.”

Kenma and Osamu don’t reply immediately, and just when you start to think that you crossed a line they both smile. “Yeah, I know.” Kenma says. “Ya don’t get as much credit as ya deserve, Y/N.” Osamu adds. “But you’re tough, and I wouldn’t dare to try and coddle ya.” He leans forward and his smile shifts to a smirk. “I think the people that need to hear that are waitin’ for ya.”

You let out a sigh, because he’s 100% right. “I know, but I was just practicing what I wanted to say on you guys.” You meet Kenma’s eyes with a knowing look. “Kuroo is going to be terrible about this.” Kenma nods. “But it’s the right thing to do.”

You nod, signing again before stepping out of bed to make your way into the living room.

A/N: Okay if I had a choice waking up hungover I wouldn’t mind having Kenma and Osamu be part of the welcoming committee, as random as the pairing is. I’ve read a variety of opinions about relationship dynamic between Y/N and her friends, and I’m very excited to read everyone’s thoughts from this chapter and the next chapter!!!
