The Dutch Colonial Empire held colonies that rivaled the reach of the British, French and Spanish conquests & engaged in maritime trade that's quite evident today with the scores of Indonesian & Surinamese restaurants in Amsterdam. They were focused on trade more than religious indoctrination (ahem, Spain). During its golden age, they built canals in Amsterdam, ushered artists like Rembrandt and built the first multi-national company. But the Dutch Army was no match against Napoleon's & Hitler's armies.  The Nazi occupation is best told by Anne Frank's Diary and the Anne Frank House itself. Like the Holocaust Museum, it's a reminder to be vigilant against past and present-day intolerance. Every Trump/Putin/Erdogan/Duterte/(insert your dictator here)-supporter should read her diary. But the Netherlands of the past is not its present. It's multicultural, tolerant and permissive. They decriminalized cannabis use since 1950s, and legalized prostitution since 2000 & marriage equality since 2001. The Dutch are not hell-bent on people speaking Dutch (ahem, Murica, France?) nor are they paranoid about hijabs. Newest taco spot in downtown SD. Two Seasons. Finally got the chance to visit and hike Glacier National Park. 🏔️ We canceled our trip last year because of the fires but ended up going this year just about when the Eastern side was expecting winter conditions. Below 20F some nights and parts of the hike. 🌨️❄️ Freaking scary driving in the snow with road closures and accidents. 😱 The Western side was still beaming with Fall colors 🍁 but lots of places have closed for the season and will remain closed til early July.
