In light of Steve Bannon’s conviction, and with renewed hope that Trump is one day tried criminally for the Jan. 6th insurrection (or any of the other charges he’s being investigated for), I’m revisiting this segment from Last Week Tonight- IMO one of the best segments this show has ever done, in which John Oliver addresses Trump supporters’ notions that 1.) “he tells it like it is” 2.) that he is truly independent & beholden to none, and 3.) that he is a successful businessman. 

“...these notes were apparently written in gold sharpie, which is so quintessentially Donald Trump- something that gives the passing appearance of wealth, but is really just a cheap tool.”

“... he has spent decades turning his own name into a brand, synonymous with ‘success’ and ‘quality’, and he’s made himself the mascot for that brand- like Ronald McDonald or Chef Boyardee- and that is who we’ve seen in The Apprentice or Wrestlemania or Home Alone 2...” “...the very name ‘Trump’ is the cornerstone of his brand.” 

However, as I think about Trump I’m reminded that Trump really isn’t representative of what the American people wanted. After all, he did lose the popular vote by ~3 million votes, which isn’t as much of a margin as I would like to see in a campaign that pitted Hillary Clinton, a powerful, respected, well-connected expert in politics, against a fucking reality TV character, but 3 million people is still nothing to sneeze at. So where should my frustration with the state of US politics be directed?
