Chapter 1 „Lady in White“
Summary: Dean and Sam just started hunting together again and although Dean is happy to be close to his brother after years of being separated, there’s a little parasite following them around like a plague.
A freaking lady in white.
That’s how easy the job was.
Almost disappointing, because it started so much more intense.
Evangeline took out the matches and started lighting the candles one by one, placing them in a circle around two toys.
A baseball glove and a teddy bear.
The kids‘ toys, which she found in the old, dusty bedroom.
If she was lucky, they played long enough with them, to be spiritually connected to the objects.
Otherwise, this whole ritual was useless and she could start all over again.
„Become a hunter, they said.“ She grumbled and put away the matches.
„It’ll be fun, they said.“
The young woman sighed and sat down on the rotten bathroom floor.
The candles flickered dramatically and icy air gushed over the brunette.
„Amate spiritus obscure, te quaerimus, te oramus, nobiscum colloquere, apud nos circita.“
Evangeline mumbled the words again and again, waiting for a sign of the ghosts.
A car rolled into the front yard of the house.
Evangeline heard it come to a halt.
She continued chanting, afraid that if she sped up, she‘d mix up the words.
Desperation creeped into her voice when there was still no response.
Mislead herself into a dead end?
Was she just not worthy of the ghosts‘ presence?
All this work just to end up witnessing another man die?
Evangeline opened her eyes and exhaled relieved.
A boy and a girl, looking exactly like the ones in the photograph downstairs.
The murdered children of Constance Welch.
The woman put on her calmest smile reserved for children.
„I need your help. Would you two sweethearts consider staying here for a while? It won’t take long, I promise.“
The kids stared back at her with big gloomy eyes.
Gunshots rang through the silence, then someone screamed something she couldn’t make out.
Evangeline looked at the window, panic rising in her chest.
What the hell was happening outside?!
Should she check or would the children disappear?
The two just kept staring at her, not reacting to the turmoil
It seemed like they didn’t notice anything but her.
“You want us to help you?”
The young woman swallowed, unease settling in her chest.
These kids were scary as hell.
She nervously wiped her hands off on her jeans.
Evangeline stood up and ran to the window. Nothing outside other than tire marks, but she did notice someone running inside, even though she couldn’t make out who it was.
Muffled voices downstairs.
It sounded like two guys fell victim to the ghost.
Evangeline turned back to the kids again.
She crouched down in front of them, throwing fear and caution overboard.
“I want you two to stay right here an-“
The kids grabbed each other’s hand as their eyes became distant.
Evangeline stumbled back.
They didn’t see her anymore.
She was completely powerless.
The sound of water running tore her attention away from the ghosts.
The young woman looked around the bathroom and her eyes locked onto the faucet of the tub.
Water ran out and splashed over the rim, flowing under the doorframe out into the corridor.
Evangeline hastily tried to turn off the water.
A cold harsh breeze hit her back.
“You’ve come home to us mommy.”
The children’s voices echoed through the house, sending a shiver down the brunette’s spine.
She quickly opened the door, stumbling into the hallway.
At the bottom of the stairs, Evangeline spotted her.
The same Constance she saw on the bridge a few days ago.
The children stood at the top of the stairs, holding each other‘s hand again.
Water was still flowing from the bathroom, down the hallway and stairs.
Evangeline glanced back, debating if turning off the faucet would help.
She knew it wouldn’t and directed her attention back to the scene.
The young woman stepped out of the doorframe, trying to see what was happening.
An ear piercing scream made her flinch.
With covered ears, she looked down the stairs.
The boy and girl were hugging their mother, dragging the woman down to the netherworld with them.
Constance screeched and whined like she was in pain.
The three ghosts vanished in a pool of water and silence settled in the house again.
Evangeline lowered her hands and sighed relieved.
Muffled voices downstairs and then a crash.
The brunette ran down, praying that no one was harmed.
She got silent real quick, when her eyes landed on the two men standing over the puddle in which the ghosts disappeared.
One man, she knew all too well.
Someone she swore to never cross paths with again.
Evangeline and Dean stared at each other in disbelief.
“The fuck you doing here?” The girl crossed her arms, glaring at Dean.
“Me? I should be asking you that.”
He stepped closer, hands on his hips.
“What the hell are you doing here?”
“Well I’m doing my dad’s job!”
He draped his arm over the other guy’s shoulders.
“We‘re doing our dad’s job.“
„Your dumbass has a brother?“
She glanced at the taller guy with curious eyes.
Soft face, longer hair, innocent eyes.
He looked more like a puppy than a man.
„Yeah! And he just drove the ghost into the house, which means we finished your job.“
The same smugness that drove the woman crazy back then and apparently still did.
Evangeline let out an amused huff.
„If it wasn’t for me, the ghost kids would’ve never showed up in the first place.“
„And if it wasn’t for us, the woman in white would’ve still been at the side of a road.“
„Oh please, I had it all under control.“ She waved him off dismissively.
„I would’ve been done within the hour and then hook up with the cute bartender I saw yesterday.“
„Like someone willingly hooks up with you.“
She rolled her eyes at the passive aggressive comment.
„I ain’t got your face, so yeah people do hook up with me willingly.“
„Okay, will you two stop it?“
The brother finally interfered.
„Job is done, so what’s the point in fighting?“
„Oh, I know him. He’s a bitch.“
She smiled and gave Sam her hand.
„I’m Evangeline, pleasure to meet you.“
„Yeah… a better one than your brother anyway.“
„You ain’t better than me, Vangie!“
„And you ain’t supposed to call me that, Winchester!“
She yelled over Sam’s shoulder, glaring daggers into Dean‘s back.
„Sam, I swear to God if you screwed up my car, I’ll kill you.“
Evangeline rolled her eyes.
She started going up the stairs to get her bag.
Now that the job was finished, she’d go check into a motel, wash up, sleep a bit and then look for the next case.
„Well it was nice meeting you Sam. Hope we’ll see each other again sometime and that your brother ain’t gonna be too bitchy then.“
The woman turned around again.
„Why don’t we take you with us? I’m sure Dean wouldn’t mind.“
Dean turned around again, his glare clashing with Evangeline’s.
„I don’t want her in my car. She’s gonna pull some stupid shit.“
„Please! Unlike you, I have manners.“
She smiled at the younger Winchester.
„I’ll get my stuff and then we can go.“
Smugly, the girl walked to the moldy bathroom and got her bag.
The candles she used to call the ghosts were left on the ground extinguished.
She had no use for them anymore.
Outside, the Impala was already waiting, the brothers inside.
Evangeline climbed into the backseat.
She patted Sam’s shoulder.
„You pull anything back there, I’ll leave you at the side of the road.“
„God, you’re such a baby, Winchester.“
The young woman leaned back, closing her eyes.
„I’m in no mood to do anything right now, so consider yourself lucky.“
The drive was quiet except for the low sound of AC/DC playing on the radio.
Dean glanced in the rearview mirror from time to time, only to see Evangeline still leaning back.
She looked almost identical to the girl he met two years ago.
Still dressed up like a woman from the 70s. Still having her brown hair in two braids.
Even the feather hair piece and protective jewelry were still there.
Like being away from her family made her grow up.
„Okay so here’s where dad went.“
Sam’s voice cut through the silencer, as he pointed to a spot on the map.
„It’s called Blackwater Ridge Colorado.“
Dean nodded thoughtfully, his eyes still on the road.
Evangeline scooped closer, fully awake now.
„We don’t know. Our dad left us coordinates and that’s all.“
The girl replied with an understanding huff, not asking further questions.
„If we shag ass, we can make it by morning.“
Sam glanced at his brother, an apologetic look on his face.
Dean understood immediately.
„The interview is in like 10 hours. I gotta be there.“
Dean was quiet for a minute, his eyes fixed on the road.
Evangeline watched him curiously.
She found it hard to believe, that the buff macho guy could get this sad over anything.
„Yeah… yeah whatever. I’ll take you home.“
Sam turned off the flashlight and put away the map, keeping quiet.
„Can I ask what interview?“
The girl leaned against the backrest of the front seat, her head turned towards Sam.
„I um… I have an interview for a law school. I’m going to Stanford.“
He glanced back and realized that Evangline was actually intrigued in his story and didn’t feign interest.
„That‘s so cool! Look Winchester, if you ever get arrested, he can bail you out.“
„Oh please Vangie, we both know you’d get arrested before me, your face literally screams criminal.“
He grinned at her in the rearview mirror, his eyes mischievous.
„I told you like a hundred times, stop calling me Vangie! That ain’t my name.“
She crossed her arms, anger building up inside her.
„I’ll stop when you stop calling me Winchester. Besides, your name‘s too long anyway.“
„That’s why people call me E. Hell, you could even go with Angie, but no, you pick the one nickname I hate.“
„You two seem awfully familiar with each other.“
Sam glanced between his brother and E.
„Dad and I were on a hunt about two years ago in Cherokee. Some witch thing or whatever. Vangie.“
He purposely used the wrong name again.
„Lives there with her family. They helped with the case… well, mostly the family. Vangie was just a pain in the ass.“
„T‘s not what your dad said, when I saved your ass.“
„Also I don’t live there anymore… I’m a hunter now.“
„Became one to piss me off, huh?“
E rolled her eyes at the arrogance.
„Not everything‘s about you, Winchester.“
„So you've been a hunter for two years now.“
Sam let out an impressed laugh.
„You gave up on a good life for hunting?“
„I don’t like knowing about the things out there and just sitting on my ass doing nothing. I’ve got a family to protect.“
She fiddled with her bracelets.
„I’d rather be absent than useless.“
The rest of the ride was silent, both brothers thinking about that last statement.
When they arrived at the campus, E was asleep in the back again, soft breathing barely audible over the engine.
Sam got out of the car and turned around to look at Dean one last time.
„You’ll call me if you find him?“
„Maybe I can meet up with you later, huh?“
„Yeah alright.“ was all Dean answered.
The brothers glanced back at the girl.
„Get her to a motel or something.“
„I dunno maybe I’ll just leave her at the side of a highway?“
Dean grinned stupidly at his own joke, but got serious again when Sam gave him a scolding look.
„I’ll see that she’ll get a room somewhere or something.“
Sam nodded approvingly and walked towards the building.
Dean‘s yell startled E out of her sleep and she looked around groggily.
„You know, we made a hell of a team back there.“
E waved a quick goodbye at the younger brother, as Dean started the car again and the pair drove off.
„So can I sit in the front seat now?“
„Absolutely not. You’re too distracting to ride shotgun.“
She yawned and glanced at the young man.
Instead of an answer, Dean did a sharp U-turn and sped up back to the campus.
Dean got out of the Impala, E close behind.
Instead of answering her, the man ran towards the building and stopped in front of a door.
„You sure, you ain’t just being paranoid?“
A scream from inside the room reached their ears.
„That answer your question?!“
Dean broke down the door screaming for his brother.
Worried, E hurried in behind him.
Dean went straight to the bedroom.
A wave of flames met the two hunters.
Immediately their eyes turned upward to the ceiling.
The burning body of a young woman.
Flames spreading everywhere.
And Sam on the bed screaming.
Dean ran into the burning room and grabbed his brother, dragging him out of there as fast as he could.
He screamed at E, running past her.
She yelled back and slammed the door shut before the next fire explosion hit the three of them.
The heat was overwhelming and she felt the tears form in her eyes from the smoke.
The young woman heard Dean scream back at her and she spotted him by the door, Sam still in his arms.
She leaped into his chest and the hunter dragged both her and his brother out of the apartment, as it burned down behind them.
Police, firefighters, medics, students.
Standing behind the crowd.
For once not trying to one up another.
Then a whispered „Yeah.“ as if he still wasn’t ready to reveal more to the female.
Dean turned around and walked back to the car.
Sam stood in front of the trunk, tears slipping down his face.
Dean stood next to him, eyes locked on his younger brother.
E leaned against the Impala, glancing between the siblings.
Sam threw the rifle back into the trunk.
His voice firm and determined as he closed the trunk.
