NO you absolutely WANT your PLASTIC SURGERY procedures to be done by a PLASTIC SURGEON.
As in someone who is specifically trained in it and does it every day.
Someone who is not specifically trained in pleasing cosmetic results and not actively practicing pleasing cosmetic results is how you get horrifying cosmetic results
I cannot tell you how many episodes of Botched I've seen where someone with a mangled nose job says some shit like "My dentist did 2 for 1 rhinoplasty...."
Feels like an important clarification from prev
I have had a rant brewing for awhile now and this seems like as good a place as any for it:
The "plastic" in "plastic surgeon" did not get here to mean "cheap and fake."
Plastic, the word, predates plastic, the material. The material was named for its noteworthy quality.
"Plastic" means "shapeable." Workable, moldable, malleable, et cetera.
When the first reconstructive surgeries were being pioneered in the 19th century, working absolute miracles like restoring whole faces to girls and women who'd caught fire tending to their kitchen stoves, among a multitude of other devastating conditions, it was this miraculous reshaping that gave the surgery its name: plastic surgery, the shaping surgery.
Time passes, and plastic, the material, is developed, and goes from fantastic modern wonder material to byword for cheap imitation; plastic, the surgery, expands from reconstruction to aesthetic finicking, Barbie is introduced with her unrealistically-proportioned plastic body, and the phrase "plastic surgery" goes from indicating "the reshaping surgery (what a marvelous thing)" to "the fake face/fake tits/fake nose surgery (how vulgar and deceitful)."
Same phrase. Entirely different connotation.
Just sayin'.
You want the reshaping. Go for the plastic.

There's an open pit in the middle of our office plan that drops down into a bunch of very sharp spikes that kill you instantly. This is bad. People keep falling in there and dying. Someone put a sign up, the other day, all bright yellow so you can't miss it, that says "Beware!!! Spikes!!!"
The office immediately split into two factions over it. One says that if anyone falls in the spike pit it's their own fault for being so stupid and not watching where they're walking, so we should remove the sign. The other says that the sign is an insult, there shouldn't be a spike pit in our office at all, and having the sign up like that is just normalising the existence of the spike pit, so we should remove the sign.
We ended up removing the sign. Probably for the better. Still... for a while there it looked like it might have worked...
Nobody has ever been capable of writing a scathingly harsh and well formulated satire about the perils of modern capitalism, that doesn't just get immediately one-upped by some random food service worker talking about their actual week.
i’m so fucking pissed off at this picture
wwhat the fuck….
I FUCKING LOVE THIS
oh my god thank you for the second perspective, it honestly makes me feel way less stressed about this image, you have no idea
Here’s the second image again since it somehow disappeared in reblogs
There's really this strong temptation that everyone has which basically says "to have interiority is to be like me; ordinary people are surface everywhere." And this manifests in different ways in different spaces, and becomes really pronounced when you cluster together with similar people. So tumblr users often act like straight people don't have any interiority because it helps you feel the deepening of social bonds with other gay people. This happens professionally too. I think it was Summer or Sharks who was saying that programming people think that intelligence is just being really good at writing code. Not surprising but very strange to me! I am (equally ridiculously) used to thinking that intelligence is being really good at philosophy, having command of a lot of sources that you can use creatively, etc. This reflects a kind of dynamic on tumblr and reddit. On reddit to have interiority is to be a science guy and on tumblr to have interiority is to be a humanities girl (and the dynamic is gendered in exactly this way). And I think there is something dangerous about habitually regarding other people as automatons. It's good to have people outside of your niche to remind you that other people from different walks of life are quite deep and complicated. They are full of love and fine grained attention to things you never thought to care about. And I think a lot of people go through life thinking of themselves as perpetually victimized by basically empty people rather than having genuine confrontations with full, genuine people who are committed to subtle, complex and real values, who have detailed and intricate histories, and who have a bond to you that you might never quite fully understand. But we rarely even try at understanding these things. We just decide that they're stupid and ridiculous and unreasonable.
This is actually such a crucial part of healing from neglect and abuse and I have to add to this.
Because indeed, people who like you will not roll their eyes and sigh at the idea of accommodating your needs, they will value your voice and be upset with you about injustice done to you, not at you for "being difficult". They will be happy when you find a way to live a better life, and help you to get there. If you are struggling, someone who loves you wants to see you smile, not tell you to smile because "you have it so good".
im literally in tears what the fuck

the stingrays at the touch tank just now were acting pretty cautious around the people reaching in, getting really close but staying juuuust too far for anyone to touch, and this ten year old boy in a fnaf tshirt told me, exasperated, "the stingrays are ragebaiting us!!"
Female ceramic figurine belonging to the Nazca culture (Peru, 100 AD.-800 AD.)
I’M LAUGHING REALLY HARD AT THIS FOR SOME REASON OH GOD??
lovely story from a friend today.
Look, this post has been wildly more popular than I thought it deserved, apparently at least in part because "don't burden others; be independent" is far more ingrained in people than I realized. So here's the thing: society works when people help each other. Helping others gives people a chance to know each other, and gives them an investment in the people they help. Helping creates bonds. People enjoy helping, and you are doing a good by letting them help you if they so wish.
Offer help; accept help. You will be a part of creating a helping culture. Which, incidentally, weakens capitalism and the fractionation between people that benefits those who would use us.
A horrifyingly few years ago I realized asking for help builds trust, too.
If I ask you for help then I demonstrate you can ask me for help.
That.
Was a difficult lesson.
If I ask you for
help then I demonstrate you
can ask me for help.
Beep boop! I look for accidental haiku posts. Sometimes I mess up.
The Victorian Era was shite compared to now obsiously but also titty piercings were popular everyone was on heroin and they thought bad sex made your kids ugly so the zeitgeist must have been wild
I wish I could remember the source, but I once read a sociologist's take that the Victorian era was a complete abberation of human development. It was uniquely weird, never existed before, will likely never exist again.
I wonder how much of that was on the back of the industrial revolution. Maybe humanity had a similar "weird" moment in the Fertile Crescent when we figured out farming.
But yeah. Victorians were an odd bunch. Delightfully contradictory.
I feel like the wild combination of Suddenly Having So Much New Technology We Barely Understand and Suddenly Using So Much New Technology We Barely Understand *May* have resulted in such new and novel situations as:
The baby will stop crying if I give it cocaine
My entire face is covered in arsenic
How Wonderful That I Can Buy Guns And Heroin At The Same Store! I Certainly Hope My Lead Poisoning Does Not Lead To Bouts Of Distemper And Irrational Thinking
There Are Bare Electrified Wires Running Through My House And My Technicolor Dress Is Highly Combustible, Which I Do Not Know Yet

@teaboot this maybe applies to modern times as well

What do you mean the climate change we've been warned about for 60 years is real. I thought that was a torment nexus delusion

(I am aware I had a few historical points wrong there) but YES
I feel like that's *exactly* why new technology and ideas in younger generations always seems so scary while our present, boring technology seems so safe
we don't know the long term effects of ANY of it yet, but whatever bad things our parents raised US with, at the very least we aren't dead! Who KNOWS how this newfangled whatchamacallit might kill us.
NOW! To consume this bag of plastic particulate my parents gave me and assured me was fine and has not yet killed me

The thing is, right, that overworking yourself is still harmful if you're doing it for politically good reasons. It's not the presence of a Capitalist Boss demanding overwork that makes it bad. It's the other way around, incentivizing overwork, a bad thing, is one of the reasons why capitalism is bad.
Whether you're overworking yourself out of a sense of moral obligation, or because you're super passionate about the thing you're working on, you still have to take care of your health and take breaks.
This is literally one of the most common contributors to burnout.
["That was the one great advantage of being gay.... you beat the court. I beat 'em every charge.... Beat all my cases... [They were for] assault. One was on a police officer.... He could [identify me], but they didn't believe I did it to him. They didn't believe I could do it. He was in there, his head was all wrapped up; he had a concussion, broken nose, eyes— and [he was] about a six-footer. And there I am, looking as pathetic as I could. And I remember the judge, he says, "You did that?... Why you couldn't weight a hundred pounds soaking wet," he says to me. I says "Ninety-eight." He says, "I don't believe you did this; no, I have to throw this out." Cop's name was Donovan. Dick Donovan.... He was a troublemaker. That happened in the Mardi Gras, that I got his ass.... 'Cause I always say, Swing, don't stop, because don't give them a chance. Don't give them a chance, they'll kick the shit out of you."]
