Truly I have been sleeping on individual countries’ Miss Universe pageants for national costumes. Just found the gallery for Miss Philippines this year (ocean theme!!!) and it’s incredible. might have to go through them individually because they’re just that good — genuinely the only thing approaching a dud is the one poor girl in the mandatory I Learned En Pointe For This ballerina fit.
meanwhile Miss USA’s state costumes are incredible in the exact opposite direction, which is to say deeply embarrassing. tempted to do an individual breakdown for this one too but it would be like 85% costume shaming.
somewhere in the middle of this spectrum are the Miss India costumes, which have some really enjoyable parade floats and 80s fantasy movie empresses, but also a lot of fancy lehenga that would be fine if this were the Fancy Lehenga part of the competition but it’s not. it’s the Parade Floats and Rejected Drag Race Looks part of the competition. I need everyone to lock the fuck in and get on Thailand and the Philippines’ level.
Let’s start with the Miss India highlights.
The actual clothing is still mostly in Fancy Lehenga territory, but the accompanying parade floats are pretty good! The second one does have a smoke machine, so points for that.
I would love to watch the 80s dark fantasy movie these costumes belong to. An 80s dark fantasy Bollywood movie would have incredible musical numbers, actually.
These could go in the 80s dark fantasy Bollywood movie, but I would also accept ‘space empress’ as an answer.
Singling this out because I love a Tribute To Space Exploration, and this one rips. Would love to see a little more texture and embroidery instead of the printed pattern on the dress, but I do appreciate that the rover, lander, and rocket are all proper 3D models and the moon looks like it has some texture too.
(why am I singling out ‘had 3D models’ for praise? We will get there once I find a gallery of the Miss USA state costumes. Right now I only have the video and I’m not taking the time to screencap that mess.)
Let’s get into the Miss Philippines costumes so we can see what a national costume competition can look like when it’s firing on all cylinders. The theme was “Water,” and I think more countries should start having a yearly theme. It really seems like having that structure forces everyone to up their game.
Just incredible stuff right out of the gate. That cloud lights up!
This is going to take a bunch more reblogs (thanks, image limit) so I’ll put the rest of this batch behind a cut.
