His sisterâs bathroom was freezing, and heâd forgotten his towel. He grabbed some tiny towel that Vic probably used on her hair and rubbed his head, teeth chattering. He grabbed his robe, but it was thin and fraying. As he pulled it on, he looked outside the window. Snow was swirling in almost every direction. He felt the wind through the window and shivered. He was going to catch his death in here.
The plan was to make it to the closet for a towel then his room without running into anyone. His teeth chattered as he ran for it, and of course, a door opened. Aaronâs boyfriendâs head sticking out of Aaronâs room. Robert sighed but kept on course. He pulled open the linen closet and grabbed an old beach towel.
As he turned, he saw Eli was still looking at him. âWhat?â
Eli jumped and stepped back a bit back into Aaronâs room.
Robert glared at him.
âI, uh⌠was told that you were who I needed to talk to.â
That was ominous. âWell, Iâm freezing, soâŚâ
âOh, right, yeahâŚlater.â
Robert turned to go into Vicâs spare room and cursed his furnace for breaking for the billionth time. The last thing he really wanted to be doing was running into Aaronâs latest boyfriend â who was sticking around for far too long. Why hadnât they broken up yet? Robert glowered as he dried off and quickly got dressed. Â
Eli was hanging in the hallway.
He had a split second impulse to just punch him.
Tell him he wasnât good enough for Aaron.
No one was.
But he just blinked at him and realized he wasnât getting out of whatever this wasâŚ
âWhat?â
Eli sighed. âI um, I asked Adam, but he told me to ask youâŚwhich their best mates, right? Him and Adam?â
Robert rolled his eyes.
âAnywayâŚitâs just things are getting serious.â
What? No. Him?
âAnd so, I want to get Aaron something good for Christmas, but he's⌠well keeps saying he doesnât want anythingâŚdo have ideas?"
"Why would I give you ideas?â
âAdam seemed to think youâd be the better one to ask?â
Robert rolled his eyes.
âI mean⌠I know you and Aaron are mates, butâŚuh, are you really that close.â
âYeah, we are."
"OhâŚâ
Robert smirked. It bothered Eli he and Aaron were close. Good. Let it. âAnd sorry, I already got him the best present, so youâre flat out of luck."
"I could pay you for it?â
âAre you serious? No. And itâd make zero sense coming from youâŚno mate, youâre out of luck. Try a hoodieâŚâ he brushed past him and walked downstairs.
Into an explosion of green streamers and red and green balloons. âVic, what the hell?â
âMy party is tonight.â
He sighed. âYou need to fix the heater in your bathroom.â
âAnd just lose money again, no thanksâŚcan you put this up?â she handed him a sprig of fake mistletoe.
âReally? Are you twelve? You going to play spin the bottle tonight too?â
âCould be fun,â she grinned. âItâs Christmas in a week, come on, please, I canât reachâŚ.between the kitchen and the living room.â
Robert sighed and reached up, sticking it where she wanted it with a bit of tape.
âOh, Hi, Eli.â
âHiâŚAaron said it was alright if I slept in.â
âYeah, of course, there is coffee in the kitchen.â
Robert grabbed his things and tried not to glare at Eli.
âThat is looking more and more serious, isnât it great?â Vic said.
âYeah, peachyâŚâ
âYou could give him a chanceâŚ.â
âWhy?â
âFor Aaron? I think he really likes him.â
âI gotta get to work.â
âHappy trucking.â
âI donât driveâŚnever mindâŚâ he walked out the door, and his phone chirped. He grabbed it as he walked to the cafe on autopilot. It was Aaron. Â
A: Going to be at the party.
R: Hoping to avoid it.
A: They figure out your furnace. I can look at it, you know.
R: Meeting guy there on my lunch break. Let you know.
A: Eli texted that youâre a prick. Â
Robert snorted and looked up to order his Americano. Â
R: Was I supposed to be nice?
He watched the screen, holding his breath and hoping that the answer wasnât yes â if it was yes, then it was getting serious with him and Eli. Wasnât it? And that made his stomach churn, and the urge to hit and throw things rush to the surface. He didnât know what to do with itâŚ
How do you deal with it?
He thought it was mad at first, feeling the things he felt for Aaron. He still thought it was a bit mad, but he knew now it wasnât going away. It was getting worse. But they were⌠they were them, mates, they had something good and realâŚ
He needed him.
The idea of messing with it felt terrifying.
A: Nah.
Robert blew out a relieved breath. Â
~~~
Aaron sipped the crappy coffee, mostly just to get some heat into him. He felt frozen from working in the yard in the snow. It was coming down too hard now, and it was pointless. He supposed he could do paperwork, but he was thinking about just taking off early. Start the weekend early, he glanced at the time. He could maybe swing by the Mill and be there when Robert met with whoever heâd called about his heater. Â
The only issue was Adam was giving him a look.
âWhat?â
Adam laughed. âJust I know someone is thinking really hard on what to get you for Christmas.â
âJust get me money like usual, mate.â
âNot me.â
Aaron stared at him.
âCanât think of who?â
Aaron shrugged. âWho is there?â
âPlenty of peopleâŚbut this is specific. You really have no idea who?â Adam laughed.
Aaron blinked. âEveryone knows what I like.â
âActually, mate, no one knows what you like. Why do you think I give you money, and Vic bakes you things?â
âIâm not that hard to buy forâŚâ Aaron muttered.
âOnly if your Robert Sugden,â Adam laughed.
âWhatâs that mean?â
âOh, come on, heâs like some Aaron savant. You always fucking love his presents.â
âDo notâŚâ Aaron tried not to look at his watch on his wrist that Robert given him for his birthday last year. It was simple, durable, not pretentious, and almost ugly. Â
âYour mum is still mad about that watchâŚI saw you look.â
âYeah, the one she got me would have gotten all scratched up here in a day⌠itâs just practical. And whateverâŚâ Aaron frowned. âWho are you talking about?â
âEli, mate, tall dude, bit quiet.â
âWhat?â Aaron frowned.
âYeah, he asked me what you like. I sent him to Robert.â
âOHâŚâ Aaron started laughing.
âWhat?â
âEli, texted me earlier saying Robert was a prick.â
âTheyâre getting to know each other.â
âWhatever, what does he need to get me anything for anywayâŚâ Â
âYouâre dating, and Christmas is seven days.â
Aaron shrugged. âItâs not that serious.â
âHeâs lasted a while, mate.â
âIt'sâŚ.â Aaron sighed.
âWhat?â
âJust tired of going out on the pull, you know, we get along alrightâŚâ he frowned.
Adam sat up. âSo, it is serious?â
âYes, noâŚâ Aaron sighed and tried not to think about Robert. Â
âIâm lost.â
âIâd like to get serious, just not sure itâs EliâŚâ
âWho then? Like is there someone?â
Aaron cleared his throat. âYou know what? I need to head out.â
âWhoa, whoa, there is mateâŚwho?â
âItâs nothing, but seriously, I need to goâŚâ
âTo the Mill?â
Aaron felt seen and turned back.
âWe all know Robert will let someone rip him off if you don't⌠save my bro in law.â
Aaron let out a small breath of relief and walked into the snow, and felt relieved when his car started. He frowned as tinny Christmas music filled the car but tis the season⌠He didnât bother trying to find a station not playing it. And as he pulled into the Millâs driveway, he ignored the fact he was singing along to Mariah Bloody Carey. Â
He hopped out, spotting Robert leaning against his front door and as a truck pulled in behind him. Â
âGood timing,â Robert said.
âThought Iâd make sure you donât get ripped off.â
âIâm not stupid.â
âYou are an idiot, though. Heâll overprice itâŚâ
âWhich one of you is Sugden?â
âI am, thanks forâŚfurnace just broke down last night.â
âLetâs take a look.â
Aaron stepped in behind him and shivered as they went inside. It felt colder than the outside. He and Robert glanced at each other. âStill warmer than Vicâs looâŚâ they both muttered and laughed.
Aaron grinned.
Robert ushered him ahead. âMr. Dingle here is going to be making the decisions.â
Guy looked up. âI donât judge. My wife does the same thingâŚâ
âOh uhâŚâ
âWe aren'tâŚâ
Aaron glanced at Robert but looked away quickly. Â
It hung there in the silence, their unfinished⌠corrections.
The guy didnât notice as he started to take his look at the furnace.
~~~
Aaron and Robert sat in the cafe, hot chocolate in front of them, in silence. Aaron glanced around, watching Nicola straightening up the Christmas decorations. There was more Christmas music in the background. It was just the air now, he reminded himself but grumbled a bit as he sipped his drink. Â
He felt Robertâs eyes on him and looked up. He shrugged in response to the silent question. It wasnât important, not really, he grumbled about Christmas music every year â why be different. He rolled his eyes at himself as he decided it was a tradition. Â
âItâs just a little longer, and itâs just a month of it,â Robert laughed.
âStarted in November, mate.â Aaron glared.
âThis, this is a good oneâŚâ Robert said, and he started to sing along to White Christmas.
Aaron rolled his eyes and sipped at his hot chocolate.
Robert kept singing, getting a bit louder and louder.
Aaron threw his napkin at him and laughed when Robert smirked at him.
His conversation about presents with Adam popped into his mind, and he realized he hadnât heard from the person who was making Robertâs present for him â he needed to call him. He still needed to shop for the rest of his list, his mum, Adam, and Vic â he put them together, probably some gift certificateâŚ
His mind went to Eli.
Ugh.
âWhatâs with the face?â
âEliâŚhe uh, Adam mentioned heâs asking around for present ideas?"
Robertâs smile dropped. For a split second. But then it was back if a bit forced, and Aaron felt a yearning for it to mean something. That it probably didn'tâŚ
"Yeah, thatâs when I was a prick.â
âI figured, when Adam mentionedâŚyeah.â Â
âDo you want me to give himâŚâ
âNo, noâŚI just donât. I wasnât planning on getting him anything. Like, have to now orâŚâ
âDump him.â
Aaron laughed. âWhat just to get out having to give him a pressie?â
âSure. Youâve dumped people for less.â
Aaron laughed, but he was considering it â it felt awful. He hadnât lied to Adam. He was tired of the dating scene. He wanted something like his mate had with VicâŚ
He looked at Robert.
He was fiddling with his phone. Aaron watched as he changed his wallpaper to a Christmas tree. âDork.â
âGrinch.â
They fell back into silence.
âIsnât this cozy.â
Aaron looked up, and Eli was standing by their table. This look on his face. Aaron stared at him. Â
âJust under my nose?â
âWhat?â Aaron shook his head.
âOh for fucksâŚâ Robert muttered under his breath.
Aaron glanced at him.
Robert started typing on his phone.
âEver think to mention how close you two are?â Eli asked.
âUhâŚdid I have to? Heâs my best mateâŚâ Aaron felt lost. Â
âI thought that was Adam.â
Aaron nodded his head and shrugged. âIs there a limit?â
âHeâs bi,â Eli bit out. Â
Aaronâs phone chirped. He looked down.
R: He was irked realizing we were close, but I didnât think it was thisâŚ
âAaron?â Robertâs voice held so much.
Aaron met his eyes, felt shaken by how green they were⌠he looked from Robert to Eli. âIâve got this.â
Robert stood up. âIâll be at the scrapyard,â he said.
Aaron nodded.
âHave a date,â Eli said.
âSit down,â he snapped.
Eli huffed out a breath, but he sat down. Â
âWhatâs your problem?â
âLook, Adam is straight as they come, but Robert, he'sâŚalways flirting with you, and you two are allâŚâ
âHeâs notâŚâ Flirting? Aaron frowned. âHeâs my friend as much as Adam.â
âNo,â Eli shook his head. âNo, itâs different.â
Aaron rolled his eyes.
âWas watching you two through the window⌠this looked like a date.â
âDonât be daftâŚâ did it?
âI donât like it.â
Aaron just stared at him.
âSoâŚâ Eli said.
âWhat?â
âIf weâre serious, it has to stop.â
Aaron felt gobsmacked.
âWell?â
âRobert.â
âOkayâŚwait, what?â Eli said.
Aaron rolled his eyes. âYou find out I have a bi friend and your first act is to behave like a jealousâŚI donât know, teenager, and you actually think Iâm not going to pick my closest mate over you? Grow up, EliâŚ"
Aaron stood up and walked out of the cafe. Â
"Aaron, AaronâŚâ Eli was behind him.
âItâs done,â Aaron said.
âBut⌠okay, youâre right Iâm overreacting, alright. Itâs justâŚI feel like I donât know you, and then I find out youâre super close with this fit guyâŚ"
"So? If we were closer, would it matter?â
âI justâŚI knew you were mates, but I didnât get it was close, and the flirtingâŚâ
âItâs banterâŚâ Aaron really wanted to not read into how Eli saw them â he was jealous. Biased. âItâs banter like with Adam.â
âItâs notâŚheâs fit, and he apparently knows youâŚâ
Aaron sighed.
âIâve made this a messâŚâ
âItâs still over.â
âWhat?â
Aaron sighed. âLook. Adam told me you want to get me something, that you see us getting seriousâŚâ
âI do.â
âI don'tâŚâ Aaron shrugged.
âItâs about him?â
Aaron opened his mouth to argue, but nothing came out.
Eli sighed. âI was⌠wrong-headed Aaron, but I ainât wrong about you and himâŚ"
Aaron frowned as he watched Eli walk away. His heartbeat was loud in his ears. Robert and he â they were⌠Something. Mates. Not like him and Adam, he told Robert things no one else knew. Or could guess at â Robert did. They were family, friends. Important. It wasâŚ
He felt like he would die before risking all of it.
But is it a risk?
~~~
The party was a thing when Aaron got downstairs. Heâd dressed up for it, being stuck there now. He and Eli had plans to go Bar West, but that wasnât happening, and Aaron was more than relieved. He felt like heâd dropped a weight and gotten out of something â Eliâs overreaction screaming red flags at himâŚ
And told him not to buy a word he said about him and Robert.
Even if a piece of him might want to.
He straightened the sleeves of his black sweater and looked around for where Vic put the beer. The party wasnât in full swing yet. He supposed a lot of people wouldnât show for another hour. Vic was still moving around, putting on finishing touches of her chosen finger foods and decorations. Adam was following her around, trying to tell her to calm down and enjoy. Aaron laughed, thinking Robert and her more alike than anyone ever noticed.
He found the beer and picked up a bottle.
Adam was in front of him. "Sheâs stressing herself out.â
âSheâll relax, get some beer in her.â
âThe plan,â Adam picked up two bottles. âWerenât you not staying?â
âPlans changed.â
âEliâs coming overâŚâ
âWe broke up.â
âWhat? MaateâŚyou didnât dump him to get out of the present thing, did ya?â
âNoâŚâ Aaron said and ignored the fact he had considered that. âRob and I were at the cafe, and he walked in all jealous and going on about me and himâŚâ Aaron shook his head. âHe gave me an ultimatum."
"What?â
Aaron nodded.
âWhat? He said him or Robert?â
Aaron nodded.
Adam whistled. âHe stood no chance mateâŚâ he laughed.
âIt was mad, how jealous he was⌠like just because weâre both into menâŚâ
âWell, good riddance, canât mess with someone that jealous, yeah.â
Aaron nodded.
âI mean, I can see it thoughâŚhuh.â
âWhat?â
âYou and Robert.â
âWhat?â Aaron forced himself to laugh.
âYeah, huhâŚâ Adam laughed. âI mean youâre mates, great ones⌠you get along. Ever considered it?â
He felt caught.
âHave ya?â Adam grinned at him. âYeah? I mean, I think I have the fit Sugden, butâŚâ
âShut upâŚâ Aaron said to stave off his panic. He couldnât do this. Â
âAdsâŚcan you come take their coats?â Vic yelled from the door.
And he was gone, and Aaron tried to remember how to breathe.
But Robert took that second to walk into the flat. Dressed in his gray jumper, and the rest of Aaronâs breath vanished. He looked down and willed Robert not to find him in the growing crowd. But he felt him, coming closer, then he smelled him, and he swallowed.
âMy place is even colder if you believe it,â he said as he picked up a beer.
âThought you werenât coming.â
âFigured youâd need someone to talk toâŚâ Robert smiled.
Aaron nodded and shoved his hands into his jeanâs pockets.
âYou alright?â
âYeah⌠I mean, I was going to dump him anyway.â
âI didnât mean thatâŚâ
âNo, not the present thing on the account he was into it more than meâŚâ
âCanât blame himâŚâ Robert said.
Aaron stared at him.
Robert was busying himself, trying to open the bottle.
Aaron took it and snapped off the top for him. âButterfingers.â
âThanks.â
âYou two mingleâŚpleaseâŚâ Vic was in front of them.
âWhy would we do that?â Robert asked.
âLook, my friends from the gym are all huddled, Adam and Iâs friends from school are over there, and my friends from my cooking classes are there⌠itâs all groups and corners. And you two are intimidating people away from the alcoholâŚâ
âWeâre notâŚâ they both muttered.
âLook at ya, with your weâre too cool for Christmas grump faces.â
âHey, I love ChristmasâŚâ Robert denied. âThis isnât Christmas."
"We have a grab bag planned, but I need to get people mingling. MINGLE.â
âVicâŚ"
"Alright,â Aaron heard himself say⌠He needed a break from Robert. Eli and Adam all in his head and making him think about the things he kept buried. It wasnât possible the two of them â wouldnât it have happened by now if it were? And Robert hadnât meant anything when he said he couldnât blame Eli for being into him? Had he? No, he had to stop thisâŚ
He couldnât ruin what they had.
âAlright?â
âYou take the ladies from her gymâŚmight get a number. I recognize some people from school, soâŚâ
âAaronâŚâ Robertâs voice sounded odd as he walked away. He forced himself not to look back. Â
~~~
Get a number.
Get a number!
It repeated in his head as he talked to the women from Vicâs gym â doing his best to be charming and talking about the people he knew from Vicâs cooking classes â heâd taken a few with her.  One woman was well into him, but he kept looking at her, and he couldnât bring himself to careâŚ
He glanced around the room for Aaron. He felt foolish for getting it into his head that maybe he should⌠What? Ruin their friendship? Just because Eli got jealous â the bloke was off the plot, really. Itâd been based on nothing at all. It wasnât realâŚ
He hadnât sensed something real between them.
They were mates. Been mates so long, Robert didnât remember not being mates. But thatâd been true once. They hadnât gotten along at allâŚ
Until the day they did.
He frowned.
âWhat did you do?â Vicâs made him blink.
âHuh?â
âWell, you made the gym crowd go get drinks at leastâŚâ
âI was talking up Jan and Brian from Cake Baking.â
Vic laughed. âThis party is going to fail.â
âItâs not. Just give it some time. Not even everyone is here yet.â
âCould you lose the long face, though?â
âIâm not long-faced.â
âAre.â
âWhateverâŚâ he looked around.
âAaron went outside.â
âWhat why?â
âAir, he said.â
âOh.â
âOh?â Vic echoed him, and when he looked at her, she was staring at him funny.
âWhat?â
Vic eyed him, then she looked away and around the room. âOh, there he isâŚâ she looked around the room. âI have a brilliant idea.â
âIâm scaredâŚâ
She grabbed his hand. âShut up⌠Aaron!â Â
âVic, let goâŚâ he shouted as she yanked him toward the kitchen. She stopped short, though, and he tripped into Aaron. Â
Aaronâs hands came fell onto his arms, just above his elbows, slowing his momentum.
âThanks,â he muttered out of breath.
âKiss,â Vic said.
The two of them looked at her.
âWhat?â Robert asked.
She pointed up.
He looked at the mistletoe heâd put up for her earlier. âNo.â
âDo it, please,â she whispered and looked around. âI need an icebreaker.â
âYou and Adam do itâŚâ Aaron said, his hands sliding off of Robert.
Robert hated how he felt cold there.
âNo, weâre married. Whatâs the fun in that. Now you two are two fit blokesâŚâ
âYou want to objectify your own brother.â
âIn the interest of my party, yes I doâŚâ Vic smiled at them. "Just do it,â she snapped.
âVicâŚâ
âOh, come on, youâre close, youâve slept together on my couch, just kiss.â
Robert closed his eyes for a moment, trying to find the reason he could give that would stop this from happening. But his mind was blank. No lies, no excuses. All he felt was that he wanted to do it⌠And it wasnât his idea, was it? It was just mistletoe?
It was a stupid Christmas Tradition.
It was a reason.
He could kiss Aaron, and it wouldnât ruin anything. They wouldnât even have to talk about it afterward â itâd probably be awful anyway, show him once and for all that he and Aaron were just matesâŚ
âAlrightâŚâ he muttered.
âWhat?â Aaron said.
âItâs just some dumb tradition, right?â Robert said, and itâd sounded better in his head.
Aaron looked between them.
âPlease?â Vic said.
Aaron sighed.
Vic squealed and shoved Robert into Aaron.
âVic..â He frowned, but his hands stayed where theyâd fallen on Aaronâs waist. âUm..â
Aaron shifted and looked up at the mistletoe.
âOH OH LOOK PEOPLE UNDER THE MISTLETOE,â Vic yelled.
Robert watched Aaronâs face go beet red.
He had to rescue him.
His hands flew up and landed on his face. He took a bracing breath. This would answer it all rightâŚ
He might as well enjoy it, go for broke, and kiss the hell out of Aaron. His thumbs trailed against his scruff, his eyes locked onto brilliant blue, he felt his breath catch, but it wasnât like heâd need itâŚ. He pressed their mouths together, and heat shot down his spine, and he stepped back, for a split second, then he dipped back down for more. Aaron tasted like chocolate and beer. His hands were on, trailing up his armsâŚ
A trail of electric bursts before it landed on his shoulders. He felt pulled in closer, he felt the tip of Aaronâs tongue, and one of his hand fell down Aaronâs chest, it landed on his waist and he yanked him closer. Â
He opened his mouth, and Aaron was there, leaning up into him, hands clutching at his jumper. Their feet tangled, then tripped, swayedâŚ
Robertâs mouth felt cold as they parted.
His heart was hammering.
Aaronâs eyes were bright and wild.
But Robert blinked and Aaron was gone.
He left Robert in a daze.
~~~
It was two days later, and Aaron still felt upended.
It figured Robert was an amazing kisser.
Toe-curling and life-changing. Â
Aaron swore and turned over onto his stomach and buried his face in his pillow. He couldnât handle this. This wasnât how it was supposed to go? And he kept wishing he hadnât let Robert talk him into going along with Vicâs ridiculous ideaâŚ
Itâs just some dumb tradition.
It was just the excuse he needed, wasnât it? It was a reason that they could cross a line that something had decided theyâd never cross. Mistletoe in the middle of a party. Itâd be quick and chaste and ridiculous. People might laugh, and catcall and Vic would get her party ice brokenâŚ
He should have known itâd backfire.
Because it was the best kiss of his life⌠and heâd tried to give as good as got. Heâd felt hungry the second their lips touched. All his insides flipped inside out and in again. Heâd wanted to climb up Robert, shove his hands under his jumper instead of clutching to the material with his fistsâŚ
When their tongues met, he thought his legs might give out.
He never kissed anyone like that before.
Heâd felt on fire.
So, heâd run outside.
And away from Robert.
How could he look at him again? How had he told himself that kiss would mean nothing â because itâd meant something. Â
They couldnât go back.
And Robert likely agreed.
Because Aaron knew he was being avoided right back.
He probably regretted it.
He probably wasnât sure how to tell Aaron they could only be friends.
Heâd risked everything.
He screamed into the pillow.
~~~
He was going to run out of the hot water that heâd just gotten back, but he couldnât bring himself to leave his shower. He let the water wash over him and sighed in resignation that wasnât going to wash away the memory of kissing AaronâŚ
Heâd tried.
To purge it.
To tell himself theyâd just done what Vic wanted.
That Aaron running away had been about him hating attention and not himâŚ
Though he was being avoided.
Which was relieving and sad.
Because he was avoiding Aaron, and he didnât know how to stop.
He wanted to stop.
They could bury this, right? Go back?
Could they?
Aaron had kissed him back? His hands digging into his skin a bit, theyâd clutched at his sweater, up on his toes, their chests pressing together âthatâd been Aaron.
Itâd felt.
Amazing.
Who knew kissing could feel like fire?
He hadnât.
Robert sighed.
He turned off the water, grabbed his fluffy towel, and enjoyed the fact he wasnât freezing. He heard his doorbell go and sighed. He needed to be left alone â the last thing he could deal with right now was other people. But it was probably VicâŚ
It was time to start on Christmas dinner.
As if getting him and Andy together would ever be a good idea.
But he put on his robe, fixed his hair a bit, and walked downstairs.
âLiv?â Chas said as she walked in.
âUmâŚwhat about her?â
âWhat about her? She just called to ask me to stay at mine?â
âOHâŚâ he sighed. âYeah, I already got the tickets. If she canât, she can hide out here.â
Chas just stared at him.
âWhat?â
âThatâs your Christmas present to Aaron, his sister?â
âUh, yeahâŚwhy? He misses her. Seems obvious.â
âI bought him two tickets to Ibiza.â
âTacky. Heâll love it.â
âFor the weekend after New Yearâs, the dates you have her hereâŚ"
"OhâŚ"
Chas sighed.
"He can take her.â
âWhat?â
âItâs perfect, right? He can take Liv.â
âTo Ibiza.â
âWhat? Heâll love spending time with herâŚsheâll love it. Itâs win-winâŚâ Robert walked into his kitchen.
Chas made a noise.
âWhat?â
âI was trying to top you.â
âWhat?â
She groaned.
âWant tea?â
âFineâŚâ she sat down at his kitchen. Â
He went about filling the kettle.
âDo you love him?â
He dropped the kettle in the sink. Â
âHmmâŚwas that an answer?â
He turned and stared at her.
âDo you?â she asked.
He felt his cheeks heat, knew his chest was too⌠he flashed to that kiss. But more than just being with Aaron â anywhere, anytime, no matter what they were doingâŚ
Always the best part of his day.
Heâd missed it for the past few days. Â
âBetter do something about it before someone else scoops him upâŚâ Chas said.
âI didn'tâŚâ
âYou didnât need toâŚâ she said. âI heard Vic describing that kiss.â
He paled. âSheâs what?â
âOh, itâs the latest gossip,â Chas laughed and pointed at him. âDonât be stupid, SugdenâŚnow tea please while we iron the details or our now group gift."
He groaned.
~~~
"You live,â Vic exclaimed as she found him at the kitchen table sipping a brew.
Aaron nodded.
âYouâve been in and out before I can see yaâŚâ
He shrugged.
âSo, uh⌠Are you mad at me?â
âMaybe.â
âFor the incident, or telling everyone about it?â
âWhat?â
âOkay. Both.â
He groaned and slumped in his chair.
Vic sighed and sat down. âI thoughtâŚâ
âYou thought what?â
âYouâd get together.â
âYou what?â Aaron stared at her.
âI meanâŚâ Vic sighed. âAaron. Itâs you and Robert.â
âWeâre mates.â
âOhâŚâ she snorted. âLook⌠Robert was moping without you at the party. I donât even know why you left him to⌠And Adam, heâd brought up how Eli noticed that thing between you â not that Adamâs ever noticed it. But since it was brought up, Adam was wondering why you two just neverâŚâ
âI, what, Vic, make sense.â
âOh, Iâm making sense. You just donât want me to⌠You and Robert, Aaron. Why arenât you a thing?â
âBecause, becauseâŚ.â Aaron frowned.
âSee.â
âNo. No, itâs not that simple.â
âOf course, it is.â
âNo, no, itâs notâŚâ Aaron frowned.
âWhy?â
âI canât lose him.â
âHmm, I think weâre talking about the opposite of that.â
âNo, no, weâre notâŚif it, if we try, and it doesnât workâŚâ Aaron shook his head. âNo. Iâd miss him.â
âSo, go for it.â
âAnd then it crashes and burns?â Aaron shook his head.
âSo, youâre a coward?â Vic said. âThe both of you? Probably. Because the two of you are avoiding each other like you contracted the plague instead of sharing probably the most passionate kiss Iâve ever witnessed. I figured you two kiss, feel a spark, but no the two of you enacted some romance novel."
"VicâŚâ he blushed.
âYou love him.â
âOf course I do, butâŚâ
âYou are in love with him.â
âIâŚâ his phone rang.
âShould check it. Adam said something about a scrap delivery issue.â
He sighed and looked at his phone, half afraid itâd be Robert.  It wasnât.  And the disappointment like a punch. He sighed at the number, though⌠and dropped his phone.
âEzekielâs Woodworking Studio?â Vic read the callerâs identification. âWhatâs that about.â
âRobertâs Christmas present isnât it⌠itâs nothing really, I just saw this guy, and his art looked like it fit in with the Mill â like RobertâŚI commissioned a piece.â
âCommissioned a piece?â Vic shook her head. âAnd you, who doesnât spend over ten quid on your own mother, want to tell me you arenât in love with my brother?â
He shifted in his seat. It all looked different now, didnât it?
His lips tingled.
His insides flipped.
âAaron, please donât do anything youâll regret."
~~~
R: My house.
Aaron touched his mouth as he read the words and then shoved his phone into his jeans and looked around. No one was taking much notice of him. Everyone was just chattering amongst themselves. He noticed most everyone at their tables at the Woolpack had Christmas bags with them. Some even had wrapped up boxes.
It was snowing again, and he almost felt a bit cheery. But his insides twisted, pleasantly and not, as the kiss played over in his mind again⌠It wouldnât let him let it go. It wouldnât let the things Vic said go eitherâŚ
But neither would his fear.
He sat down and ordered a pint from Charity.
Cain sat down next to him a few minutes later.
They grunted hello.
Aaron ordered a second pint, he felt his phone buzz in his pocket, and he knew it was Robert. He felt in his bones. Heâd made the overture, and Aaron ignored, but he wasn'tâŚ
Robert had decided to stop avoiding.
But what did that mean? Was he reaching out to go back to the status quo or?
He sighed into his pint.
"Alright, thatâs enoughâŚâ Cain pulled the pint away.
Aaron scowled at him.
âWhat has you moping about?â
âNothing.â
âWhat your mum do?â
âNothing?â
âScrapyard in trouble?â
âNo, weâre fine.â
âIt Sugden?â
He scowled.
âWhat he do this time?â
Aaron stared at him. âWhat?â
âHe does something mad, you two fall out, you look like a grumpy bear until itâs fixed⌠just forgive him already and put the rest of our misery having to deal with you.â
âOh, youâre a bush of rosesâŚâ Aaron shot back, then rolled his eyes.
âIâm I wrong?â
âHe didnâtâŚâ Aaron frowned. âDo we, I, we do that?â
Cain shrugged. âYou arenât roses when you and Adam fall out either, but itâs never as bad. What happened?â
Aaron felt his cheeks heat, and he felt the phantom kiss of Robertâs mouth. He touched his mouth and grabbed his pint back from Cain. âWe kissed,â he muttered before drinking.
Cain stared at him a bit, made a noise, and rolled his eyes. âYou were alright with it?â
âYeahâŚyeahâŚwell noâŚit was under the mistletoe, Vic made us, for her party.â
âSo not a real kissâŚâ
âWasnât supposed to beâŚâ Aaron sighed.
Cain shook his head.
Aaron snorted.
Cain eyed him. Â
Aaron twisted his pint glass around.
Cain sighed. âIâm trying here. You got work with me.â
âIt wasâŚ.â Aaron sighed. âCanât get it out my head.â
âOh.â
Aaron nodded.
âThen why are you here, moping?â
Why was that such a good question? Aaron sighed. âFine.â
âFine.â
âGoing to hisâŚâ Aaron tossed some money on the bar. âThanks.â
Cain nodded.
It was freezing outside. He dug out his gloves, zipped up his coat, put his gloves on, and started walking through the storm to Robertâs house. As he got closer, he couldnât see any lights inside, and he started to feel stupid. Maybe he wasnât even home. Maybe heâd gotten fed up with no answer from him and gone out.
But he got to the door and rang the buzzer and hugged himself against the col and waited what felt like forever. But it was probably only a minute or so when Robert appeared and yanked Aaron insideâŚ
âYou look freezing,â he muttered. âGet out of that jacket. Itâs wet with snow.â
Aaron did as he was told, mostly because he was freezing. He toed off his boots too and looked around The Mill. He loved it. Heâd helped Robert out a bit, pointing to things he liked. A few of them were on the walls. There was one empty spot â Robert driving himself spare trying to figure out what he wanted there.
He thoughts about the present he commissioned. His stomach churned. He hadnât been sure about it, but something had pressed him forward. It felt like a familiar fear.
A Robert fear.
Robert appeared in front of him and held up two boxes. âTea or hot chocolate?â
âHot chocolate.â
A grin broke across Robertâs face. âMe too.â
âYeahâŚI knowâŚâ Aaron laughed.
Robert kept looking at him.
Aaron nodded.
âSo, youâre here⌠I thought for sure you were still avoiding me.â Â
âTried too. Cain was talking my ear offâŚâ
âCain? Talking your ear off?â
âIn his own way.â
âSo, escaped by coming here?â
Aaron nodded.
âGood good,â Robert turned toward his stove. âTake a bit to make this⌠sit down?â
Aaron pulled out a chair in the kitchen. âFurnace is definitely fixed.â
âYeah, thanks for helping me find that part cheaper.â
âNo big deal.â
âStillâŚ.â He said from where he was now, stirring chocolate in a pot.
Aaron wondered how many times heâd watched Robert do it â make them hot chocolate, over the years, how many Christmases? How many years where the only present he ever looked forward to were the ones marked by RobertâŚ
They were always the only surprise.
The only gift that made sense to him.
He knew the fear he was tasting. Heâd felt it a long time. Let it get too strong. Â
âLookâŚâ Robert muttered and turned away.
âWhat?â
Robert sighed and stayed focused on the pot of chocolate. âThis is weird.â
Aaron let out a laugh.
âAnd awkward, and weâve never been awkwardâŚâ
Aaron nodded.
Robert smiled, and he turned off the burner, grabbed the chair closest to Aaron, and sat down. âIâŚâ
Aaron waited.
Robertâs cheeks went pink. Â
Aaron felt his breath catch.
âAm terrified.â
Suddenly Aaron could breathe. He felt tears in his eyes, and his head nodding up and down. âMe tooâŚâ he wiped at the corner of his eye.
Robert blew out a breath. âThatâs fantastic.â
âThat weâre both scared?â Aaron shook his head.
âYeah, yeahâŚisnât it?â
âI donât know. Been using it to⌠keep us how we are?â
Robert nodded. âIs that what you want? Us how we areâŚâ
âOr?â
âIâve hated all your boyfriends.â
Aaron nodded. âI know.â
âBut, I mean, not just for all the reasons they were wrong for yaâŚwhich they wereâŚbut⌠I hated them, Aaron. I wanted. I just didnât think youâd want meâŚâ
âWhy wouldnât I want you?â Aaron stared at him.
âIâm smug, Iâm rude, Iâm always scheming against my co-workersâŚâ
âYouâre ambitious, you never let your sister down⌠You never let me down."
Robert shrugged.
"I need youâŚâ Aaron whispered. âI canât talk to anyone else like you.â
âSame here, you knowâŚyour the most important person to me outside of myself and VicâŚI donât know what Iâd be without you.â
Aaron nodded.
âButâŚâ Robert grabbed his hand.
Aaron felt a jolt of warmth up his arm. He stared at their hands, watching his own fingers just tangled with Robertâs. He thought about a million times, heâd wanted to grab his handâŚ
So many chances he never took.
âI want more.â
Aaron closed his eyes.
âDo you think?â
âI donât knowâŚâ Aaron felt the fear tearing at him. He let go of Robertâs hand and wiped his eyes. âI can'tâŚâ he stood up and went to the door.
âAaronâŚâ Robert followed him.
He bent down to put on his boots.
âDonât go. Itâs a blizzard out there.â
âNot going farâŚâ
âAaron?â
âI heard yaâŚâ he muttered, and he dared look up into eyes he knew as well as his own, mostly green with a glint of blue that always drove him to distraction. He sighed and started trying to put on his coat.
âAnd?â
âIâm scared.â
âMe too.â
âI know, butâŚâ
âAaron.â
âItâs so muchâŚâ Aaron let out a breath. âItâs too much. I was scared alone, and now weâre scared togetherâŚâ
âItâll get less frightening.â
Aaron let out a breath. He wasnât sure.
âFineâŚalright. Iâll wait.â
Aaron stared at him. âWhat?â
âIâll waitâŚâ Robert said. âBeen waiting anyway, even if I didnât know it. Been waiting for something to crack and make us open our eyes â my eyes are open now. Iâll wait for ya⌠what else would I do? Itâs you, Aaron. Iâm terrified, but Iâm sure⌠that kissâŚI thought it would tell me I was lying to myself about us. But it was the truth instead.â
âYouâre mad.â
âI know,â Robert grabbed Aaronâs coat that he was still fumbling with and zipped it up. Tugged and pulled at it until it wrapped around him correctly. Snug and warm. He watched Robert take his hand again, the one that just been tangled up with his⌠his hand looked small in his grip. He felt a warmth from it that radiated throughout all of him. Â
He let Robert put on his glove. Then the other one.
Robert grabbed a hat from his rack, yanked Aaronâs hoodie up from under his jacket, and put the hat and the hood up. âI want a text, alright.â
âRobertâŚâ he stared at him.
âUnless youâre ready to stay?â
His heart jackhammered.
âOkayâŚ.but um, Iâll see you on Christmas at Vicâs.â
âI donât know ifâŚâ
âI said Iâll wait, no time limit.â
Aaron blew out a breath. He stared. âI donât deserveâŚâ
He wasnât even sure why, just that the fear was overwhelming. Robert was the one he relied on to always catch himâŚ
And he was waiting on it again.
The risk felt too real.
~~~
Christmas Day
He swung to look at the door hearing it open. Â It was a little past ten at night, but he sighed when it was Matty and his girlfriend, Amy. Though it was all part of the tradition that somehow heâd been allowed into â Aaron dragging him once years ago now. Adam and his family started, then came Vic. Just a group of them getting together after all the Christmas dinners, opening presents, drinking and watching a stupid Christmas movie on late-night cable. Â
It was fun.
It was nice to feel part of something.
He never really had that until coming home and finding Aaron.
He shook his head as the level of their stupidity crashed down on him.
And it might be too late.
Aaron might be too afraid of them.
But Robert wasnât sure if he could go backward â heâd try. For Aaron, as equally terrifying as that sounded â just being friends when he wanted to beâŚ
Everything.
The door opened again, and Aaron came in.
Robert felt his heart stop.
Aaron was holding an odd-shaped gift, which he put down with the rest, and he let Vic pour him some wine, which he only drank on holidayâs but Robert knew he liked a few â heâd made sure to buy his favorite. It was the one that was already open. Â
He saw Aaron take a sip, notice, and seek him out.
He nodded. He didnât dare move. This was Aaronâs call.
How it went tonight.
Aaron walked across the room.
Robert smiled and tugged on the expensive jumper he was wearing.
âPaddyâŚ.not my mum, which was weird. Though the same thing, innit?â
âYeah.â
âMum said, I was to discuss her present with youâŚwhich again weird.â
Robert smirked.
âSeriously, you went in on it with my mum?â
âNo. You think we could get along that long? No, just hers kind of had to fit into mineâŚit was competing. I fixed it, though.â
âCompetingâŚâ
Robert grinned and grabbed Aaronâs hand. âUpstairs.â
He felt Aaronâs hand twitch in his and slowed down, ready to let go, realizing he shouldnât have â they didnât do this, they touched arms or whatever⌠this wasnât waiting, was it? Â
Aaron squeezed his hand.
He felt a sigh of relief at not having to let go.
âWaitâŚâ Aaron muttered as they reached the stairs.
Robert stopped.
Aaron grabbed the big present from his pile.
âWhoa, hey, where are two going,â Adam started.
âNope, let them,â Vic grabbed his arm.
âBut we allâŚâ
âNot this year,â Vic said.
Robert shot her quick smile and tugged Aaron behind him up the stairs. He went into Aaronâs room â his favorite in the whole house, muted colors and not that awful lime his sister chose in what he assumed was madness. He turned to face Aaron to be blocked by the present.
âItâs big.â
âI see.â
âI hope you like it because I wasnât sureâŚâ Aaron sighed.
âIâll love it. But you first.â
Aaron nodded.
They sat down on the bed.
Aaron took his hand in his.
Robert swallowed.
Aaron fiddled with their hands.
âAaron?â his throat felt dry.
âIâm still scaredâŚâ
Robert nodded.
âBut just now, downstairs⌠seeing ya, touching yaâŚit feelsâŚbetter.â
âGood.â
Aaron looked at him.
Robert waited.
âPresent?â Aaron asked.
Robert tried not to feel disappointed. He hated himself a bit for feeling disappointed. He was here with Aaron. They were holding hands â that felt wild in a way, in an amazing way. He promised heâd wait. That meant not complainingâŚ
âIâm sorryâŚâ
âNo, Iâm, I didnât mean toâŚâ
Aaron took a sharp breath. âIâm just notâŚâ
âItâs okayâŚpresents.â Robert stood up and reluctantly let go of Aaronâs hand. Aaronâs hand falling after him. He pulled the tickets out of his pocketâŚ
âTo explain⌠these are the tickets your mom bought before she knew what my present is.â
âAlrightâŚâ he took them, and his eyes lit up. âIbiza, five nights, after the New Year.â
âTacky.â
âItâs greatâŚâ he frowned. âRobert? How does yours compete?â
He pulled out the next piece of paper. âThis is Livâs itinerary. She getâs here on December 30th.â
âYouâŚyouâŚâ Aaron stared at him. âI havenât seen herâŚsince two years agoâŚthe moneyâŚyouâŚâ he stared at him. âSandra agreed.â
âIt took some charming, but Liv misses ya too, and you donât talk enough because youâre horrible at FacetimeâŚâ
Aaron launched off the bed, his hands on his face, and kissed him, muttering, âShut up.â
They swayed. Robert ran his hands down Aaronâs back.
Aaron let out a noise and stepped back. âWe canât go back, can we?â
Robert smiled a bit because Aaron was still in his arms. He could feel his heat. His hands were settled on his waist. He leaned down and caught his eyes. âNo.â
Aaron nodded.
Robert held his breath.
âHow, umâŚhow are you fixing it, so mumâs gift and yoursâŚâ
âLivâs going with ya, to Ibiza.â
Aaron smiled at him, but it wasnât as big as he expected. It didnât reach his eyes. âAaron?â
Aaron stared at him, his hand reaching up, and he touched his face. âYou hate IbizaâŚâ
âIt'sâŚâ
âUhâŚâ Aaron cleared his throat, stepped back, and picked up the large wrapped gift he had for Robert. âIâm nervous about this.â
Robert took it. It was heavier than he expected. âAaron, whatâŚ"
"Open it.â
He pulled it open. It was clear it was wood, driftwood maybe, and he shook his head and pulled it out of the paper completely. It was painted in whites and blues that would look perfect in his living room. It was so simple it was barely even a design, but it was clearly art, made from found wood and madeâŚ
âAaron.â
âI sorta picked out the colors and the design, nothing fancy, I wasâŚâ
âI love it.â
Aaron smiled.
âItâll be perfect in that spot aboveâŚâ
âThe fireplace,â Aaron finished.
âYeahâŚâ
Aaron frowned and looked at the tickets on the bed.
âWhat?â
âCome with usâŚâ
âWhat?â
âIf you canâŚif you wantâŚcome with us.â
âTo Ibiza?â
âI know you hate it and all, butâŚâ
âAaron?â
âIâŚâ Aaron closed his eyes, but he held out his hand.
Robert took it.
âWe canât go backâŚâ Aaron tugged at him. He stepped closer. âI donât want to go back.â
âAre youâŚâ
âYou can stop waiting.â
âAaron?â
âYes, us, letâs just⌠risk it and go all in.â
âThank God,â Robert breathed.
âBut I canât go away for five nights without youâŚand if you can put up with LivâŚâ
âAnything. Liv, IbizaâŚâ
Aaron laughed.
âI mean it though, Aaron. Anything.â
âMe tooâŚâ Aaron let out another breath and squeezed their hands. âItâs already not all that scary.â
âMaybe a little,â Robert whispered. âAaron?â
âYeah.â
Robert kissed him, then again, and tugged at the sweater. âAll in?â
Aaron stared at him, his eyes wide, and he looked terrified. Robert felt it. He felt himself, but he strokes his thumb where it was already on the skin, and Aaronâs eyes went darker, and he looked at Robert. âI haven'tâŚevery time I relive that kiss, I think about you and meâŚâ
âYeah?â Robert smiled and kissed his neck.
Aaron made a beautiful noise and started to pull on the buttons of Robertâs dress shirt. âYes. All in.â
Robert kissed him before he finished the sentence. He wanted to taste him again, feel the scruff of his beard and the pain of how hard Aaron gripped onto him, moved into him. He was moving backward and hit the door of Aaronâs closet, and Aaron started to kiss his jawline as he tugged down on Robertâs shirt.
He hurried it off his shoulders, trying not to move too much, wanting Aaron to keep touching him, kissing him â it felt like he waited forever. Like he just woke up a few days ago under the mistletoe when Aaron kissed himâŚ
All his bottled up jealousy and attraction. Â
All the love.
He grabbed Aaronâs face, their eyes met, and he let out a breath. It was shaky, scared. They were changing so much about them right now â but it felt right. It felt ridiculous to have waited. He swallowed. âWe canât be afraid, Aaron.â
Aaron nodded, but his breath quickened. âItâs just scaryâŚhow much I feel about youâŚâ
Robert nodded, and he grabbed Aaronâs sweater. âWhy is this still onâŚâ
âDonât know.â
He pulled it off and dropped it to the floor.
âThatâs new, you know.â
âYouâre never going to wear it again,â Robert said as he kissed Aaronâs neck.
âShitâŚâ Aaron gripped onto him.
âLike thatâŚâ he did it again.
âRobâŚâ Aaronâs hands were on his belt buckle.
âHurry up,â he muttered, and it was his turn to push Aaron.
Back and back until they landed on the bed, the springs creaking and both of them laughing, then kissing and touching, and yanking on clothes and kickingâŚ.
Robert found himself on his back, Aaron over him, staring down right into him, through his eyes to his soul. His heart pounded. âAaronâŚâ
âWhat?â
âYouâre everything.â
Aaron sniffed and looked away.
Robert ran his hands up his arms.
Aaron looked back at him and nodded.
~~~
They collapsed together, tangled up, out of breath, and both of them feeling smug, and Aaron stared at Robertâs smuggest smile and thought that it was his â all his. He made it happened. He got to enjoy everything Robert was rightfully smug about. He got to made to feel like he was amazing and worthy and lit afireâŚ
Robertâs word was right. It was everything. Robert was everything.
And his eyes blinked closed.
And opened.
To Robertâs sleeping face.
He swallowed, every second of making love â god, it had been, hadnât it? He felt his whole body flush, with heat, from the intimacy, the passion. Every kiss, every touch, he couldnât forget it â the talking and the laughing. The quiet. Robert begging him to be slower, take longer, there was no hurryâŚ.
There was no hurry.
He let out a shocked breath to at theâŚ
Lessening of his fear.
But he got it now. Robertâs word was right. Everything. When you loved someone that deeply â he did love him. Love Robert. Possibly from the minute they met, and he became the person he relied on the mostâŚ
He knew it, but he hadnât known it.
Been too afraid of that, of losing him.
He was still terrified.
Robertâs eyes opened.
Aaron smiled.
âAre you watching me sleep?â
âLittle bitâŚâ
âHuh?â Robert smiled.
Aaron tried to move closer, but there wasnât much room.
Robert held him tighter all the same. Â
âAre you alright?â Robert whispered after a bit.
âYeah.â
âAre you sure?â Robert sounded hesitant.
âYes.â
âItâs just..didnât seem like you plannedâŚâ
âYou canât, can ya, plan this?â
Robert nodded. âGuess not, but you knowâŚâ
âIâm still afraid I might always be a bit⌠you mean everything.â
âI know, you tooâŚâ
âI knewâŚyou were standing there going about Ibiza and Liv⌠and how you just fixed it, fixed the mix up so Iâd be happier⌠you always do that, make things better for meâŚnot even trying, not even meaning tooâŚâ
âAaronâŚâ
âNoâŚI heard I was going to Ibiza with my sister â who I miss, and all I could think was I didnât wanna leave ya.â
âYeah?â
âYeahâŚand I voiced it, and you just agreed to go someplace you hate, for me.â
Robert shrugged.
âI love ya,â Aaron whispered, and he was immediately kissed, then Robertâs face was buried into his neck. âI do.â
âYou have no idea how much I love you tooâŚâ
âBit of an ideaâŚâ Aaron whispered.
âMerry Christmas,â Robert whispered.
âItâs Boxing Day by now.â
âFine. Happy Boxing Day,â Robert laughed.
âSleepâŚâ Robert whispered.
Aaron nodded, and they curled into each other, maneuvering so they were both comfortable, and then they faced each other and giggled, kissed, giggled, and kissedâŚ
Until Aaronâs eyes slipped closed again.
And for a second time, he woke up in Robertâs armsâŚ
He felt out of breath for a second, terrified by the love but more certain than ever, and⌠he carefully got out of the bed, found his phone on the floor with his pants, and snuck out of his room. He walked down to the kitchen and looked at the time â
No, he couldnât wait.
He dialed Livâs number.
âAaronâŚâ she was sleepy. âDid he tell ya,â she said anyway.
He sighed, he felt bad, but⌠âLook, Liv, I need you to do me a really big favor.â
âWhat?â
âUmâŚRobert and I got together last night.â
âTogether?â
âWe'reâŚyou know together.â
âOh. Oh. Finally.â
Aaron couldnât help but laugh. âYeah, wellâŚum. I donât really want to take off in few days without himâŚâ
âOr have your little sister around?â
He breathed a sigh of relief, she said. âYeah.â
âOkay.â
âOkay? Just like that?â
âNo, butâŚyou should be with him.â
âIâll see you as soon as weâre backâŚweâll figure something out.â
âI know. He can come too if you want.â
âLiv, thanksâŚâ
âYou sound happy.â
Aaron looked upstairs. âI am.â
âAlright, itâs only seven. Iâm going back to bedâŚMerry Christmas.â
âMerry Christmas.â
âWhat was that?â Robertâs voice made him jump. âSorry.â
âWhat you sneaking up on me for?"
"I woke up. You werenât thereâŚâ Robert stepped closer. âWere you on the phone?â
âI called Liv.â
âWhy?â
âTo ask her if it was alright, we went on our own.â
âAaronâŚâ
âDon'tâŚâ Aaron grabbed Robertâs waist. âJust donât. I want to be with you, alone, and⌠yeah, she gets it. She said finally.â
Robert laughed. âThink we might get a lot of that.â
âWeâll survive.â
âI donât know, Ibiza.â
âShut up.â
âMake meâŚâ
It wasnât long before they fell back into the bed, naked again, the laughter fading to something more â something that would last as long as everything implied.
As your Robron Secret Santa gift, Iâve gone with finding a song lyrics that remind me of our lads, Now and Forever. I hope you loge the set below and the way itâs been presented.
Until the day the ocean doesnât touch the sandâŚ
For @shellbutty82
âJust meet him for a drink. Al says heâs really nice.â
âAl says that does he?â
Chas sighed.
âOk maybe not exactly. But I met him the other day in passing and he was really polite. Called me ma'am and Mrs Chapman.â
Aaron rolled his eyes.
âSo thatâs all it takes with you? Some lad you donât know assuming youâre his bossâ wife.â
âNo. He was just friendly. He had a sweet smile.â
Aaron sighed.
âHow do you know heâs even gay? Or single? Or would be interested?â
âOh come on love, youâre a catch!â
Aaron rolled his eyes again and sighed.
âRight.â
âSo youâll meet him? Just a drink in the pub, see how you get on? Iâll ask Ellis to give him your number on his next shift.â
âNo mum donât do that. Iâm⌠Iâm actually seeing someone.â Aaron said quickly.
âWhat? Who? Whatâs his name? Do I know him?â
âYou donât know him. Itâs early days.â
âI want to meet him.â Chas decided.
âNo, itâs too soon. Like I said, itâs early days.â
âBring him to the family Christmas party then. Thatâs a month away.â
âNo.â
âWhy not? I want to meet the man whoâs swept my boy off his feet.â
Aaron rolled his eyes.
âItâs not like thatâŚâ
âI still want to meet him.â
âFine. Iâll ask him. He might have plans with his own family.â
âSurely heâll want to meet your family? His boyfriendâs family. His in laws.â
âIâll ask him ok mum? Iâll let you know if heâs coming. I have to go now. Weâre heading into a tunnel. Byeee.â Aaron said and hung up just as Adam got into the passenger side of their truck.
âWhat was that?â He asked.
âMy mum. Trying to set me up with some bloke working for Al.â
âOh? Who?â
Aaron shrugged.
âSome bloke called Ben. One of the water sports instructors I think. And a really sweet lad who called her Mrs Chapman apparently.â
Adam smirked.
âSo whenâs the wedding?â
âShut up. I told her Iâm seeing someone. And now she wants me to bring him over for Christmas.â
âChristmas with the family? Isnât that a bit⌠soon?â
âYes. Especially since Iâm not actually seeing anyone.â Aaron let his head fall back against the head rest.â Iâm screwed.
âNo mate, Iâll help you. Thereâs these apps for gay guys right? Like gay tinder?â
âHmmâŚâ
âWeâll find you a guy on that!â
âAds⌠guys on those apps arenât looking for dates or a boyfriend. They just want sex.â
âWell then⌠Tell him youâll sleep with him if he pretends to be your boyfriend for a night! Or just hire someone.â
âWhat? Like an escort?â
âWhatâs wrong with that?â
âNothing⌠but Iâm not doing that. Iâm not paying someone to play my boyfriend.â
âAlright, fine. Donât take the easy fix.â Adam muttered as he put on his seatbelt. âPlan B it is then.â
âWhatâs plan B?â
âWe find you a guy before Christmas day.â
âYeah that was kind of plan A already, Ads.â
âWhat about Finn?â Adam asked, ignoring Aaronâs comment.
âWhat? No.â
âWhy not? Heâs gay.â
âI know.â
âAnd single.â
âI know.â
âSo whatâs the problem?â
âNothing. I just⌠donât want to give him the wrong idea.â
âWhat wrong idea? Just be straight with him.â Adam said and laughed when he realised what heâd said, earning him an exasperated eyeroll from his friend.
âIdiot.â Aaron mumbled as he started the engine.
âSo whatâs wrong with Finn?â Adam tried again a few minutes later.
âNothing⌠Itâs just⌠We hooked up ok?â
âWhat?! You slept with my brother? When? Is it a friends with benefits thing?â
âNo. It was just a one off⌠After that Halloween party we went to.â
âWow⌠I didnât know you fancied him.â
âI donât. I was just kind of drunk and⌠in the mood⌠you know⌠And he was just⌠there.
âMy best friend and my brother⌠I donât know what to do with this information.â
âNothing. Because itâs never happening again. And Iâm not asking him to play my boyfriend either.â Aaron insisted. âI had a hard enough time trying to get him to leave the next morning. He was gone when I woke up, so I just went for a shower, thinking heâd left, only when I got downstairs he was having a cuppa with my mum.â
Adam laughed.
âYouâre joking.â
âI wish I was. I had to almost physically throw him out. It was embarrassing.â
âOk so no Finn.â Adam said in between fits of giggles. âAnd you donât want a guy from an app, or from some dating service⌠so where does that leave us?â
âUs?â Aaron glanced sideways. âWhen did this become an us thing?â
âOperation get Aaron a boyfriend is go! Iâll help you find a man. Iâm good at these things.â
Aaron snorted.
âYeah right. The only reason why youâre with Vic is because she told you the two of you were together and would not accept anything else.â
Adam sputtered through a protest but was thankfully distracted by his phone.
He groaned when he read the message.
âWhat? Donât tell me that was the business account. I canât deal with bad news today.â
âNo, itâs Vic. Her brother is coming to stay with us for a while. I was hoping sheâd forgotten about that.â
Aaron frowned.
âWhy is Andy staying with you?â
âNot Andy. Robert. Her other brother.â
âI didnât know Vic had another brother.â
âHe lives in London I think. Or lived⌠she said something about him going through a divorce.â
âAnd thatâs why heâs staying with you? Because of his divorce?â
Adam shrugged.
âI think so. But Iâd rather not have him staying in our box room.â He sighed and read the message from Vic again. âHey why donât you join us for tea tonight?â
âWhy would I do that?â
âSo you can be my buffer if the guy is a twat. And Iâll have at least one person to talk to that I like.â
âVic will be there.â Aaron pointed out.
âYou know what I mean. Sheâs making lasagne. Itâs the pratâs favourite apparently.â Adam told him. âJust say yes, mate, please.â
Aright. Fine. But the guy might actually be nice? Have you considered that?â
âNo. He never stopped by or called before. And now his wife is kicking him out, Vic is good enough again.â Adam explained. âAnd Andyâs told me a few things. He doesnât like him either.â
âSince when does that mean anything?â
âJust trust me on this one.â
Aaron rolled his eyes but for the sake of keeping the peace, he didnât say anything. They had two hours left on their drive home, three if the roads were busy, and heâd rather not have an angry Adam on his hands during it.
In the end they made it home in a little over 2 hours and Aaron rushed home quickly to change. Thankfully his mum was busy in the pub so he didnât have to answer any difficult questions about his non-existent boyfriend. Â Â
He grabbed a bottle of wine from the pub cellar and made his way over to Keepers. He didnât particularly like wine, Â but he didnât want to show up empty handed either.
When he walked up to the door and knocked, one of the most beautiful men heâd ever seen answered it.
âCan I help you?â
âI⌠Iâm Aaron.â
âOk. Good for you. That doesnât answer my question.â
âI⌠I uh.. IâmâŚâ
âOh there you are mate! I was beginning to think you werenât coming because your mum was holding you hostage until you told her everything.â Adam suddenly appeared and all but dragged him into the house.
âUh⌠no⌠she was busy.â Aaron told him. âI brought this.â He handed Adam the bottle.
âOh cheers mate, Iâll go put it in the kitchen.â
And just like that, Adam disappeared and left him alone again with the beautiful man.
âReally? Well⌠Iâm sure you will sooner or later⌠and well⌠Iâm not as bad as Andy would like you to think.â
âNoted.â
At that moment Vic emerged from the kitchen and ushered them both inside.
The four of them sat down at Vic and Adamâs tiny dinner table and Aaron ended up sitting next to Robert.
âSo you two deal in scrap metal?â Robert asked and seemed genuinely interested.
âYeah, business is actually going well too.â Aaron replied and soon the two of them were deep in conversation. Theyâd started out talking about business and Robert looking for an investment for his divorce settlement, but soon moved on to more personal subjects.
âSo why did you divorce her then? It sounds like you had a pretty good life down there in London?â
Robert took a sip of his wine to buy himself some time to think of an answer.
âIt uh⌠just didnât work out.â
Aaron nodded.
âFair enough.â
The rest of the night was uneventful and it was nearing 10.30 when Aaron thanked Vic for the food and made his way home. Heâd spent most of the evening talking to Robert and had really enjoyed himself.
He was easy to talk to, funny, gorgeous, had a smile to die for and eyes to lose yourself in⌠and he was straight.
âDonât fall in love with the straight guy.â Aaron told himself as he walked home.
Over the next few days, everywhere Aaron went, he seemed to run into Robert somehow. Which did nothing to calm down the butterflies in his stomach.
âIs this all you have?â Robert asked David as he held up a bunch of flowers, just as Aaron walked into the shop.
âWhy? Is it not good enough for a cool business man from the city? What girl are you trying to woo? Is it Leyla?â
âI⌠donât know who that is. I just want some decent flowers to put on my motherâs grave alright? But obviously Iâm looking in the wrong place.â He tossed the flowers onto the counter and left the shop. Aaron hesitated for a moment but then went after him.
âHey, Robert, wait up.â He called out and jogged a few steps to catch up with the other man. âAre you alright?â
âFine.â Robert replied automatically.
âYou donât look fineâŚâ
Robert didnât say anything and they just kept walking.
âWhat was all that about with David?â Aaron asked after a moment. âIn the shop?â
Robert shrugged.
âItâs nothing. I just⌠thought Iâd buy some flowers for my mum. But he didnât have much to choose from.â
âYeah⌠I think he gets the petrol station rejects.â Aaron joked, trying to lift Robertâs spirits. âIs it her birthday? Your mum I mean.â
âNo⌠I just⌠havenât been home in so long⌠I thought Iâd go say hi and give her some flowers you know. Make myself look like a prat talking to a headstone.â
âI do that too. My ex is buried there too. I go see him sometimes to update him on whatâs going on with me and the village.â
âYour⌠ex?â
âYeah. Car accident. Drunk driver. I was devastated. He was my first boyfriend⌠I thought Iâd never fall in love again after him.â
âBut you did?â
âSort of.â Aaron shrugged. âBut Iâm single now.â He blurted out. âSorry, I donât know why I told you that.â
Robert gave him an amused smile.
âItâs ok. Your secret is safe with me.â
âGood. Thanks.â Aaron said and bit his lip to stop himself from smiling like a lovestruck idiot. The whole not falling in love with the straight guy thing wasnât going very well. âI know a place. In Hotten. That does nice bouquets.â
âThanks⌠but I donât have a car here, my ex got it in the divorce⌠and if the buses around here are as punctual as they were when I was a kid⌠I donât want to walk around Hotten for two hours with flowers because the bus didnât show up.â
âI can give you a lift.â Aaron offered. âI should get my mum something too. As a Christmas present.â
âChristmas is over two weeks away.â
âI like to start early.â Aaron joked and they both laughed.
âAlright⌠well if you donât mind. When are you free?â
âNow?â
Ten minutes later, the two of them were in Aaronâs car on their way to Hotten. It turned out having Robert sit that close to him was absolutely the worst thing to happen to for his ability to focus on the road.
âSo⌠how long have you lived in the village? I donât remember you from when I was a kid.â Robert started, trying to make small talk.
âOh uh⌠five years? Maybe six? I donât keep track.â
They talked about the village, and the road to Hotten and how much it had changed since Robert had lived there, and probably some more things, that Aaron couldnât even begin to focus on.
âThis is it. â he said when he pulled up outside a shop. âThe girl that owns it used to go to school with me. We were in the same year. Her name is Michelle. She might give me mates rates.â
âEx-girlfriend?â
âWhat? No. Iâm gay.â Aaron said and if he didnât know any better, heâd say there was a spark of something in Robertâs eyes, and the butterflies in his stomach were doing somersaults again.
But the second they walked into the store and a girl, not Michelle, walked up to them asking how she could help them, the butterflies stopped and turned into a thick lump in his throat, when Robert started flirting with her.
âIâm looking for something special. For my mum. What do you recommend?â he smiled at her. âI trust your expertise, Amber.â
She started putting together a bouquet of flowers Robert chose, and commented on his good taste with every choice.
By the third flower Aaron had had enough.
âIâll wait in the car.â He told Robert.
âOh⌠didnât you want to get a Christmas present for your mum?â
âChristmas is ages away.â He shrugged and waved Robertâs comment away. âYou know where to find me when youâre done.â
He knew he was being irrationally harsh to Robert, but he couldnât help it. He couldnât deal with him flirting with some girl in a shop. Not when heâd give anything to have Robert smile at him like that.
He got into the car and pressed the balls of his hands into his eyes.
âYou idiot!â he told himself and rested his head on the steering wheel. He didnât know how long heâd been sat there like that, when suddenly the passenger door opened and Robert got in.
âAre you alright?â
âIâm fine.â Aaron lied. âThose mustâve cost a fortune.â He nodded at the huge bouquet in Robertâs hands.
âOh⌠uh no it wasnât that bad. She used her staff discount.â
Aaron nodded and then noticed a little red heart shaped card in the flowers.
âYou put a card in there too?â
âNoâŚâ Robert turned the bouquet around and plucked out the card. âOh⌠itâs her numberâŚâ
âLooks like you wonât have to be lonely for long after your divorce.â
Aaron started the car and drove them back to Emmerdale, without either of them saying a word. He turned the radio on after a few minutes to drown out his thoughts.
âWeâre here.â He announced some time later, pulling up near the village cemetery and waiting for Robert to get out of the car.
âDid I do something to upset you?â
âNo. Everythingâs fine.â
âIt doesnât seem fine. Youâve been all⌠angry since we were at the shop.â
âNo I havenât. Everything is fine. I promise.â
âYouâre full of shit.â
âYou what?â
âYou heard. Something is wrong. I upset you somehow didnât I? Tell me what I did.â
âNo. Itâs⌠itâs not like that. Itâs not you. Itâs me.â
Robert raised an eyebrow but didnât reply.
âI⌠I like you ok? Like that.â Aaron admitted. âBut youâre straight, so nothing will come from it and watching you flirt with that girl in the shop just reminded me of what I canât have.â
âOh⌠right.â
âYeah.â
âYou like me.â
âDonât make me say it again pleaseâŚâ
âI kind of liked hearing it.â
âWell tough. I am not here to stroke a straight guyâs ego by telling him I like him over and over again.â
âWhat about a bi guy?â
âWhat?â
âIâm not straight. Iâm bi. My ex and I split up because she found out Iâd been sleeping with her sister. And her financial advisor. An American guy called Brandon.â
âOhâŚâ
Robert maneuvered the flowers out of the way and leaned over the gear stick.
âAnd I like you too.â
âOhâŚâ Aaron said again and Robert chuckled, leaned in further and kissed him.
âYouâre cute when youâre confused.â He said and kissed him again, waiting for Aaronâs brain to catch up and for the other man to kiss him back.
They spent the better part of an hour snogging like a bunch of teenagers, until Aaronâs elbow accidentally hit the horn and the sound made them jump apart.
âI uh⌠should get these to my mumâŚâ Robert was the first to speak. âMeet me at Vicâs house in an hour? So we can⌠pick up where we left off?â
Aaron smiled.
âSounds good. See you in an hour.â He said and let Robert kiss him once more before he got out of the car.
Only an hour later, when Aaron walked up to Keepers, Robert was waiting outside for him.
âHey⌠theyâre home⌠Christmas preparations or something⌠maybe we can go to yours?â
Aaron looked over his shoulder in the direction heâd just come from.
âI⌠Iâm not sure if anyoneâs home⌠half the family lives in that pub. We could try to sneak in through the back.â
âI can be quiet.â Robert grinned. âItâs kind of exciting⌠sneaking around.â
A grin matching Robertâs spread over Aaronâs face and they walked back to the pub, doing their best to look casual. Only when Aaron carefully opened the back door, he could hear voices coming from the kitchen and the door to the backroom was open.
He turned around and put his finger to his lips, signalling Robert to keep quiet.
The other man nodded and followed Aaron inside.
Aaron carefully closed the door and the two of them crept past the backroom.
âAaron is that you?â
They both froze but when they heard footsteps Aaron pushed Robert towards the stairs.
âSecond door on the right. Go.â He ordered and then turned around and walked into the backroom. âHey yeah itâs me.â
âDidnât you just leave? I thought you had to run errands in town?â Chas asked.
âYeah⌠but Iâve got a bit of a migraine. It just came out of nowhere. So Iâm going to have a lie down.â
âOh you poor thing. Do you want me to get you an aspirin? Iâll bring it up for you.â
âNo! I mean⌠thatâs ok. I just need some rest. Iâll be fine in a couple of hours, Iâm sure.â
âAlright⌠but if youâre not down here by tea time, Iâm coming to check on you.â
âSure. But Iâm sure Iâll be fine by then.â Aaron said with a smile. âIâm just going to go upstairs now.â
âAlright love, weâll be quiet!â Chas called out after him and Aaron did his best to control himself and not run up the stairs. When he reached his bedroom door, he took a breath to steady his nerves and slowly opened the door.
Robert had taken off his shoes and jacket and was lounging on his bed. He closed the door behind him and locked it.
âYou took your time.â
âImpatient much? I told my mum I have a migraine.â Aaron kicked off his shoes and threw his jacket on his chair.
âOh a migraine?â Robert sat up and reached out for him, pulling him onto the bed with him. âYou poor thing. Maybe I can⌠kiss and make it better?â
Aaron smiled and let Robert kiss him. It started innocently but soon became more heated and Aaron revelled in the sounds Robert made when he pushed him onto his back and pinned his wrists above his head, while pushing up his t shirt with the other and kissing his chest.
He let out a loud yelp when Aaron took one of his nipples into his mouth and lightly bit it.
âShh!â He released Robertâs wrists to clap a hand over his mouth. âQuiet. I donât want my mum breaking down the door because sheâs hearing strange noises.â
Robert nodded and Aaron removed his hand, before leaning down again to kiss the other man.
Robertâs hands started roaming over his back and tugging at his shirt and jeans.
âOff.â He demanded, and Aaron was happy to comply.
By tea time heâd successfully managed to sneak Robert out the backdoor, after one of the best afternoons heâd had in a long time.
âThere you are. I was beginning to get worried about you.â Chas said when he shuffled into the kitchen. âAre you feeling better?â
âYeah. Much better.â Aaron replied, not being able to keep the utterly satisfied smile off his face.
That look became a common sight over the next few days, and people started to notice. Though nobody seemed to have figured out why he was so happy all of a sudden.
He and Robert would meet up whenever and wherever they could. Theyâd make the most out of an empty house, or a busy pub which meant an empty backroom, and theyâd discovered the backseat of Aaronâs car was bigger than they thought when theyâd ended up in some layby after theyâd gone for a drive.
The sex was absolutely mind blowing but Christmas was getting closer by the day and Chas was starting to ask more and more questions about his boyfriend.
âSo⌠what are your plans for Christmas?â Aaron asked carefully one afternoon, a few days before Christmas. They were snuggled up in Robertâs bed in Vicâs box room, after making the most of an empty house while Vic and Adam were out for some last minute Christmas shopping.
âUh⌠I donât know. Why?â Robert asked, pressing a kiss to Aaronâs bare shoulder.
âWell⌠my family is having this mad Christmas party⌠They do every yearâŚâ
âHmmâŚâ
âItâs just⌠this big family dinner and everyone will be too drunk to remember their name by 9PM.â
Robert chuckled.
âSounds fun.â
âI uh⌠Iâd like you to come⌠as my boyfriend⌠if⌠if you want.â Aaron stammered. âI know itâs early days and all and Iâd understand if you thought it was too soon⌠but⌠well⌠I might have told my mum Iâm seeing someone to get her off my back⌠before I met you⌠and now sheâs kind of expecting to meet my boyfriend at the family Christmas party.â
âWait⌠so⌠you only did this so you would have a date to show your mother?â
âNo! She wanted to set me up with someone, some guy who works for Al. And I told her I was seeing someone to get her to stop nagging me to go out with him. That was the day I met you. When Adam invited me over for tea. That was his idea to go over the plan to find me a date for Christmas.â
âRight.â
âBut then I met you⌠and you changed everything. I fell for you. And I hated myself because I thought you were straight.â
âNot straight.â
Aaron grinned.
âI know.â
âSo⌠what now? Does your mum know about us?â
âNo. But sheâs not blind⌠she knows Iâm seeing someone. She told me last night how nice it is to see me happy like this.â
Robert smiled.
âYou do have a nice smile.â He propped himself up on his elbow. âBut meeting your whole family? At Christmas? Isnât that a bit⌠much? This thing between us⌠itâs only been going on for three weeks.â
âI know⌠Iâm sorry. Forget it.â Aaron said and got out of bed and started looking around for his clothes. âYouâre right, itâs too soon. Iâll think of something to tell my mum. Donât worry about it.â
Before Robert had a chance to really say anything, Aaron was stepping out of the bedroom and all but running down the stairs, and rushing out the door.
He was still only half dressed by the time he reached the pub, and slammed into Al when he yanked open the back door and walked in.
âWow. Whatâs gotten into you?â
âNothing. Mind your own business.â
âAaron!â Chas scolded him but Aaron ignored her and just ran up the stairs to his bedroom.
A few days passed where Aaron snapped at everyone that so much as breathed in his direction, until Chas got fed up on Christmas eve.
âI donât know what happened, but I liked you a lot better with that dopey smile on your face all day.â
Aaron shrugged.
âThings change.â
âDid you have a fight with your boyfriend?â
âThere is no boyfriend, ok mum? There never was. I made it up to get you to stop going on about that Ben guy.â
âOk. So who put that smile on your face these past few weeks?â
âNobody. Itâs over. I invited him to the Christmas party and he said no. End of story.â
âOh loveâŚâ
âUhm⌠sorry to interruptâŚâ Al started as he knocked on the open backroom door. âBut thereâs someone here to see you, Aaron.â
âWho?â
âI didnât catch his name⌠Blond. Blue eyes. Tall.â
âListens to the name Robert. Or idiot if you will.â Robert said, stepping around Al.
âRobert? What are you doing here?â
âWell youâre not replying to my texts, and you donât pick up when I ring youâŚâ
âWhat is there to say? You made yourself perfectly clear the other day.â
âWeâll leave you two to it.â Chas decided, getting up from her seat and all but dragging Al back into the pub.
âI didnât.â Robert said after they were alone. âYou caught me by surprise⌠and I didnât know what to say⌠and of course I said the complete wrong thing. Robert puts his foot in it, shocker.â
A smile started pulling on Aaronâs lips but he did his best to fight it.
âI like you Aaron. A lot.â Robert admitted. âAnd Iâm sorry for making you think I didnât feel the same.â
Aaron nodded.
âIâve never had this with anyone. Not with Chrissie, not with Katie⌠youâre special.â Robert said with a small smile.
âYouâre not so bad either.â Aaron said eventually.
Robert chuckled.
âThanks.â  He took a few steps forward and reached out to take Aaronâs hands in his. âIf the invitation still standsâŚIâd love to come to the famous⌠or infamous Dingle Christmas party⌠as your boyfriend.â
Aaron softened at the hopeful look on Robertâs face.
âOf course. Come here you idiot and kiss me.â He said and Robert happily did as he was told.
âAre you ready for this? Half of them will be off their heads from Snowballs or whatever theyâre drinking this year.â Aaron said as they walked up to Wishing Well cottage together the next day.
âReady as Iâll ever be.â Robert gave him a smile.
âYeah? It could get kind of crazy in there. Last chance to do a runner.â
Robert chuckled and shook his head.
âYouâve met my family, right? I can handle crazy. Itâll be fine.â
âIâve⌠Iâve never brought anyone home to meet the familyâŚâ Aaron admitted. âIâm not really sure what to doâŚâ
âIâve never met the family of someone I really care about. With Chrissie it was all just part of my plan⌠now⌠I want them to like me and think Iâm good enough for you.â
âIâm sure they will.â Aaron said and turned around and knocked on the door after a quick kiss to Robertâs lips.
The door opened almost right away, like someone had been waiting for the knock on the other side, and Lydia ushered them inside.
âWelcome, welcome. Just put your coats on the stairs and make yourselves at home, loves. Dinner will be ready in a bit.â
âThanks LydiaâŚâ Aaron said as he took off his jacket. âBut thereâs something I want to tell you all first.â He cleared his throat to get everyoneâs attention. âEveryone⌠there is someone I want you to meet. Someone really special.â He reached out for Robert who took his hand and laced their fingers together. âThis is Robert, my boyfriend.â

As your Robron Secret Santa gift, I've gone with finding a song lyrics that remind me of our lads, Now and Forever. I hope you loge the set below and the way it's been presented.
Until the day the ocean doesn't touch the sand. . .
âHow can it be crooked, Aaron? Itâs a star. Stars can tip any which way they want.â
He looks over his shoulder at where Aaron has been âsupervisingâ Robertâs tree decorating, which basically means heâs been criticizing everything Robert does whilst doing nothing himself.
âAlls I know is it looks funny,â he replies with a shrug.
âYeah dad. It looks funny,â Seb chimes in from where heâs been playing with his dinosaurs on the sofa next to Aaron. His voice trailing off into a fit of giggles when Aaron looks at him and winks.
Thick as thieves, those two are. And Robert might call the whole situation a nightmare if he didnât bloody love the pair of them more than his own life.
âTell me something, then, gentlemen, how would one go about making this look unfunny?â
He takes the star off the top of the tree at that, hands the bright silver, shimmering mess to anyone willing to take it. And the way Aaron and Seb look at each other with twin expressions of âyou do itâ almost makes Robert smile.
Almost.
Aaron rolls his eyes at Seb, gives him a tickle for good measure before placing his feet on the floor and stretching his way up to a standing position.
He groans when he does it, shows a little bit of stomach where his jumper rides up as well. And Robert has to swallow thickly so as not to give Aaron the satisfaction of a visible reaction to his antics.
âWhat was I doing again?â Aaron asks innocently, his expression a plaster cast if not for the twinkling in his eyes. But Robert resists the twin urges to walk away or get pulled in that he finds himself battling with more often than heâd care to admit.
âYou were being the big man and showing me how to properly place a star atop a Christmas tree.â
He shakes the star in front of Aaronâs face, tries to school his own expression into something stern. But he can tell by the way Aaron is looking at him that heâs only moderately successful at best.
âRight,â he says. âAre you watching? Because I donât wanna have to show you twice.â
The tree is rather large, given the surplus amount of space they have in the Mill. But Aaron still chooses to move towards it directly in front of Robert like thereâs hardly room to breathe around it, his body fitting right into the curve of Robertâs in a way that makes his eyes roll exaggeratedly and his mouth slip open slightly.
Itâs never just one thing with Aaron, is it? Love and if not hate then annoyance at every turn.
âSee, you gotta make sure you twist the frame properly,â Aaron says, lower than normal but not so low that their four-year-old child would twig to what the bastard is doing.
An assumption proven when Seb pipes in, âYeah, dad, you gotta make sure you twist the frame properly.â
âOh, is that right, son?â he asks as he looks over his shoulder, one eyebrow raised in Sebâs direction. âAnd what exactly do you know about hanging Christmas tree stars?â
Seb sits up straight as an arrow, makes the face he uses when he doesnât understand why he has to finish all of his broccoli, and says, dead serious, âMore than you.â
Aaron actually sputters with laughter, forcing him to lean further back into Robertâs body. And Robert is so appalled by Sebâs behaviour that he can do nothing but bite his cheeks so as not to smile.
âYouâre a bad influence, you,â Robert says with a light shove to Aaronâs shoulders as Seb begins laughing hysterically like he just made the funniest joke in existence.
Aaron leans back again, rests the back of his head on Robertâs shoulder and looks up at him with what can only be described as deep fondness in his eyes.
And then he ruins it all by saying, âAs if that attitude is all me.â
He winks at Robert, turns his head so he can place a quick kiss to his jawline before returning to the task at hand. His voice authoritative as he continues, âIf you donât twist the frame properly, dear husband, the star will be all wonky. And no one wants a wonky star.â
Robert almost wants to step backward, refuse to play Aaronâs game any longer. But because heâs weak, he instead finds himself winding his arms around Aaronâs waist. Where Aaronâs concerned, he always has been weak. And he canât imagine a date anywhere in the future where that could change.
Heâs a menace, he is. But heâs Robertâs menace, through and through.
âSo once youâve twisted the frame,â Robert hums because most games need at least two players and heâs more than willing to participate, âWhat comes next?â
He buries his face into the crook of Aaronâs neck at that, doesnât so much kiss him as press his lips lightly to his skin. But he can tell by the way Aaron shivers slightly that heâs getting the point quite well.
âWell, you stick it on top and hope for the best, donât you?â
Robert circles his fingers around Aaronâs wrist, helps him guide the star to the top of the tree. And with his other arm still wrapped around Aaronâs waist, heâs in the perfect position to feel the way Aaron sags into his touch.
Victory, Robert thinks. Thereâs nothing else to call it.
âSebâs going to need a nap soon,â Robert murmurs into Aaronâs ear, quiet enough for the words to be for him alone.
âWell isnât that⌠convenient,â Aaron replies, tipping his head back again so he can beam up at Robert and god, if he isnât so in love sometimes he canât even breathe properly.
âIt looks perfect, Daddy Aaron!â Seb practically shrieks a few seconds later, wrenching them out of their moment. âDaddy Aaron was right, dad. Heâs a professional!â
Robert and Aaron laugh in tandem at Sebâs declaration as they turn to face their son. And this, right here, is one of those moments that Robert is going to keep, few and far between as they are.
Lifeâs been hard for them pretty much since they met, but sometimes, things turn out like this. A smile, a laugh, a warm hand in the small of his back leading him toward the sofa, toward their perfect little family.
And so what does he care if the star looks exactly the same as it did when he put it up? Heâll let the boys have their little win, knowing as he does that Aaron will more than make up for it later.
Merry Christmas @starwitness42â! Iâm sorry for the delay I really wanted to finish it with color. I hope you like it. Iâm not very good with these Christmas sweaters but I tried. Have a good Christmas :)

Itâs cute, sweet and funny - nothing to heavy and serious, just a lovely feel good read. Plus, you mentioned that the fic was initially meant to be a sort of Love Actually AU, that makes it even better and just perfect for Christmas. For those of you who havenât read it, I know youâll enjoy it just as much as I did.Â
Barry White : My First My Last My Everything
âSo uhm, Robert, your new single is called The Last To Be The First. What is it about?âÂ
Robert smiled. âItâs about meeting someone and falling in love with them, and just knowing that this person is the one. The last person who you will ever go on a first date with, give you a first kiss, spend a first night with, because youâll never want anyone else. That kind of thing.âÂ
Merry Christmas to you Bijou, and wishing you a Happy New Year. This song is an oldie but goodie and I think it fits the fic perfectly. I hope you like it. We got it together, didnât weÂ
Weâve definitely got our thing together donât we babyÂ
Isnât that nice I mean really, when you really sit and think about itÂ
Isnât it really, really nice I can easily feel myself slippingÂ
In more and more waysÂ
That super world of my ownÂ
Nobody but you and meÂ
Weâve got it together babyÂ
My first, my last, my everythingÂ
And the answer to all my dreamsÂ
Youâre my sun, my moon, my guiding starÂ
My kind of wonderful, thatâs what you are I know thereâs only, only one like you Thereâs no way they could have made twoÂ
Youâre, youâre all Iâm living for, your love Iâll keep forevermoreÂ
Youâre the first, youâre the last, my everything In you Iâve found so many thingsÂ
A love so new, only you could bringÂ
Canât you see itâs you? You make me feel this wayÂ
Youâre like a fresh morning dew on a brand new day I see so many ways that I Can love you âtil the day I die Youâre my reality, yet Iâm lost in a dream
Youâre the first, the last, my everything I know thereâs only, only one like you Thereâs no way they could have made two Girl, youâre my reality, but Iâm lost in a dreamÂ
Youâre the first, youâre the last, my everything
