Lawrence moved to emmerdale because he knew how much Robert did not want to move back. He had hoped that Robert would break up with Chrissie when Lawrence decided that emmerdale was their new home. That is canon.

That was Robert’s first storyline in emmerdale— is dealing with all of Lawrence’s calculating in how to get rid of him. This right here is why I hated Lawrence with a passion.

Didn’t Lawrence pretend a heart attack to ruin their wedding? He also tried to make a deal with Andy and Katie to ruin Robert. He tried every trick in the book to ruin Robert and Chrissie’s relationship.

I think what’s more damaging is the fact that this fatherly figure Robert desperately tried to earn the respect of by showing off his business talents, working hard for years to help grow Lawrence’s investments completely disregarded his hard work and value as soon as Robert approached his daughter. Lawrence vehemently detested Robert once he began a relationship with Chrissie, he’s good enough to use to make money, but never respectable enough to marry his daughter.

That gap between wealth and class was overwhelming for a boy whose own father had attested to the same and now he’d failed at proving Jack wrong. The fact that Lawrence repeatedly stated Chrissie was too good for the likes of Robert and used puritanical classist language and his own family to diminish and attack Robert’s character and whole identity was far more alarming than all the plots and pretences.

If both motherly and fatherly figures like Chas and Lawrence are calling Robert a turd or saying Chrissie’s taste in men leaves much to be desired, both repeatedly saying Robert is worth less than his partners and doesn’t deserve them. It must eventually take its toll. It’s no wonder Robert is currently always stating he doesn’t deserve Aaron, Aaron could do better, Chrissie deserved better. Yes I realize Robert has a lot to blame for the damage he causes in his relationships and its not like he didn’t fight back against these attacks. Just thought it must be upsetting to hear over and over again how your not enough. Especially when you imagine your own parents would have thought the same.
