On Sundays, tourists wrap around the corner of 116 and Adam Clayton Powell hoping to squeeze in to services alongside members at First Corinthian Baptist Church where Pastor Michael Walrond and the amazing church band do their best to elevate the Earth for a couple of hours. It was a cold but sunny day and a small handful of people weren't ready to give up on the beach vibes. This guy took it to the next level and tried to get his tan on after drying off from his plunge. (at Coney Island Polar Bear Club)

"Father and daughter! Father and daughter!" He was full of excitement to have had this bonding experience with his daughter. She was a little more pensive but no less appreciative of the experience shared. (at Coney Island Polar Bear Club)

This gentleman had just come in from the water and found his sons on the beach with his towels, clothes and flag. The first thing he grabbed was the flag and he held it proudly, between the warmth of his boys. The plunge was just a crazy thing to do for many participants. But as the day went on, I got the sense it meant a lot more to some. I could have asked, if I were on assignment I probably might have. I just didn't want to distract him from whatever he was feeling behind that expression. (at Coney Island Polar Bear Club)

Emerging for the water like a Viking on a rampage, this gentleman met my, "hi, how's it going?" with primal screams. He waved his POW/MIA flag with a passion as his face peaked out the missing person placement on his homemade milk carton. Whatever he might have been through, it seemed to me in this moment, believe it or not, he was happy. There was a hint of joy in his venting. As if even a few droplets of pain had left him along with his body heat. (at Coney Island Polar Bear Club)
