FOUR WHEELED NOMAD

British born and location independent, Four Wheeled Nomad is Lisa Morris and Jason Spafford. Remote exploration is the couple’s driving force, enabling their passion for wilderness seeking revealed through a skillset in content creation. Previously, they co-ran liveaboard scuba trips in the Red Sea as instructor guides.

Having hung up the fins, they motorcycled the Americas: a four-year, 80,000-mile jaunt taking in Antarctica to the Arctic. Jason is a photographer and dabbles in filmmaking where his visuals of terrain less trammelled can be found on Instagram and Facebook @fourwheelednomad.

Lisa tells tales from the trails at fourwheelednomad.com, freelancing for publications worldwide in the hopes of inspiring people to preserve the wild places left in the world. 

Currently, a Cape-to-Cape expedition sees the duo roaming somewhere between Northern Norway and South Africa. If nothing else, overlanding full-time has made them wonder if there’s enough lifetime left.

We are fully outfitted with 300ah of power, 25 gallons of water, and 67 gallons of fuel capable of getting us around 1,400 miles of range. Under the hood sits Toyota’s reliable 1HD-T engine married to a H151F gearbox designed for the abuses of off-road, hard mile travel Troopies are known for. Within the vehicle there are cabinets, a fridge, a stove, and a bed. We couldn’t be happier. We come outside every morning and look at our Troopy and finally feel a sense of peace.

As a professional photographer, living in Colorado for the past 15 years and shooting for outdoor companies for the past decade, has allowed me to blend my work and play into a lifestyle. Most people only get rare chances for adventure and exploring, but for me it’s just another weekend away from the city.

In my search for new locations that haven’t been exploited by the massive wave of Instagram photographers, I frequently need to get farther out than most. My 2007 FJ cruiser has been lightly modified with a 3" lift, and it’s amazing what this vehicle is capable of when you engage the stock rear lockers in 4Low. It’s a beast and very nimble through tight areas.

I recently removed the stock roof rack and replaced it with a rhino roof rack. On top of the roof rack is a Yakima Skyrise rooftop tent that I lucked out and found at an REI garage sale for $400 in mint condition. The tent is low profile when driving which saves slightly on how many dinosaurs I need to pump into the tank.

I built out the back of the FJ with a drawer made from a leftover 80/20 aluminum rail system and plywood. It’s been the best addition to my vehicle other than the rooftop tent. I’m a fan of organization and nothing is more frustrating than digging around for a piece of gear that is buried deep in the trunk.

There are many people out there that have to have the newest gear on their rig, but I have always liked the scrappy way of building out my 4x4 rigs. I’ll break it all getting to where I want to go anyway so why buy new when you can upcycle and save some money. All in all, I’m still working on her; it’s a slow process of adding what’s necessary. I’m always looking for that one rock that will give a tug on my front bumper and give me an excuse to add gear.

I’m excited for this season to begin—you’ll find me wandering Colorado’s high mountain peak trails every weekend once the snow melts.
