Mitsubishi AMG That Mercedes Doesn't Want You To Remember

According to Mercedes-AMG, just 500 units of the Galant sold with an AMG makeover.

Mitsubishi got on the phone with AMG, which was not yet owned by Mercedes, and asked the illustrious brand to make a hot version of one of its cars. AMG accepted the challenge.

Power had been increased through AMG tuning from 144 hp to 170 hp – impressive as this wasn't a turbocharged engine. Visually, the AMG makeover included sill trims, a huge rear spoiler that ran all the way around the trunk to the rear window edges, blacked-out 15-inch rims, and AMG badging.

These Galants also had wood interior trim, AMG-branded front and rear faux-suede seats and steering wheel, and even a sweet ICE set-up that included a cassette and a CD player.

The transmission was a choice of either a four-speed automatic or a five-speed manual. Performance data for the AMG-tuned Galant is scarce, but Automobilecatalog.com reports that 0 to 60 mph was 7.8 sec for the stick shift and 8.8 seconds for the auto, with a top speed of 145 mph. AMG even said in the sales brochure that the car had been subjected to 'exhaustive tests on the autobahn'.
