To be honest, it took me quite a while to figure out the highlighting system that actually worked for me. Back then, whenever Iโd see people using different colors of highlighters Iโd wonder โWhat do you need the various colors for anyway?!โ But years later I finally found out whyโcolor coding your highlights makes it easier for you to understand and organize the information that is being provided by the text. Plus, it makes note-taking so much easier.
With that in mind, hereโs how I color-code my highlights whenever Iโm working through my readings. You may interchange the colors as you please so as to make it suitable to your own learning process.
Any term, phrase, or sentence that introduces a new topic/idea
Usually any phrase that follows the term
The key point/s a paragraph wants to say
Basically the overall idea of a paragraph, if present
Anything that suggests a particular person, place, or event
Examples presented by the text
References cited by the text
Book titles, article titles, literally any outside source that may be useful to later references
Miscellaneous information
This wraps it up for me. Iโm not saying you limit yourself to just 7 categories, but for me having this much is enough. Itโs always fun to experiment and work your way around! Hope this helps!
