A high school in California is welcoming its first transgender cheerleader after she was rejected by her mother.
Anry Fuentes made history recently as the first transgender cheerleader at Denair High School in California.
Fuentes hasn’t had it easy since she came out as trans; her mom even kicked her out (Fuentes seems to say she’s working on their relationship, but doesn’t give much more information than that). But her school community has rallied around her, raised money to buy her cheer uniform, and continues to support her as her whole self.
Aaron Rosander, the school district superintendent told the station Denair values its students. “We’ve dealt with Anry like we’ve dealt with all students: we welcome them all, we support all the kids on their journey through life,” he said. […]
While coming out to her classmates was difficult, Fuentes said it was easier than the alternative. “It’s so much harder to hide than to come out and be yourself,” she told a reporter. “Like, I found it really hard to, like, say the words you know … them actually coming out of my mouth, but once they’re out, they’re out. That’s it.”
Milestones left and right. Congrats and best of luck, Anry.
“Been on tumblr for two hours soaking in awesome melanin-filled posts. So I’ll share mine. My Dad was a black superhero…. TWICE.
As a kid, I thought it was silly & goofy to see my Dad in a cape. He left his mark on Hollywood and could’ve made millions more if he was willing to play a runaway slave, pretend to be the less intelligent token black friend, a thief, a thug, or even wear a dress and padding to become an old stereotypical black woman. However, he taught me images are powerful. What we put on tv..what we read…all of the images we show to the youth…are powerful beyond measure.
He taught me that the goofy guy or silly girl can still be the superhero. He feels accomplished because he played a brown super hero and made little brown kids feel like someone finally represented them. Settling may make you more money but never settling means so much more.
Black fucking excellence. Robert Townsend. #blackout
Sincerely,
A really proud daughter who didn’t understand the depth behind a black man in a cape until her twenties” - Skye Townsend / tumblr

Whoa. For the first time ever, a Victoria’s Secret model walked the runway with natural hair. Rather than bending to VS’s traditional beauty standards, 23-year-old Angolan model Maria Borges rocked the runway sans wig, weave or even extensions. For Borges, it was a history-making in a personal way.
