He knew that Kyoto needed to work that night and that it would leave her daughter, Tohru alone in their apartment. He knew what it felt like to be left alone, and he hated it, he wondered if Tohru hated it too.
He climbed up the wall and hold on as he was finally high up enough to look into a window.
He knew he shouldnât, he could get in trouble for this, but what he saw made him happy that he had.
Tohru was sitting with her back to him, slowly eating dinner all alone.
His eyes narrowed, saddened. He couldn't see her face and yet he was sure as to what she was feeling.
She looked so lonely, and he wanted to wipe that loneliness away.
He wanted her to smile and laugh as she did on the picture Kyoko always showed of her.
He still wondered how her voice and her lather would sound like. Was he the kind of person that could bring it forth, or would she dislike him like everyone else?
The thought alone saddened Kyo, but he had to remind himself that if she was anything like her mother then she would be kind.
So with a nod to sue himself, he jumped down and instead ran towards the stairs.
He looked at the sign outside the door reading âhondaâ, this was their apartment.
He raised his hand but paused.
He normally wasnât like this. He wasnât the kind to care...was it the selfish part of himself that just didn't want to owe Kyoko anything?
...no, that wasnât it, it was because she had been so kind, and she deserved kindness in return, so even though it wasnât Kyoko, Kyo was sure that she'd be happy that he looked after her daughter.
He knocked and waited.
And waited.
And waited...
âOh uh..â Kyo rubbed the back of his neck, she was probably taught not to open the door when she was home alone. Smart, but it certainly wasnât working in Kyoâs favor.
He poked a finger through the letter slot and spoke âhey, Iâm Kyoâ
Even he realized that this must be creepy for her.
âIâm sorry if Iâm scaring you, I just... I wanted to see if you wanted to play...with me?â
âHuh?â Finally, he heard a reply. A small and nervous sound from the other side of the door.
âNo i...Iâm not supposed to open upâ she said quietly, although she could tell that it was another kid on the other side of the door she wasnât gonna go against her mother's word.
âOh uh, thatâs okay, do you want to talk? That way you wonât have to open the doorâ
Tohru on the other side of the door went quiet for a little while, but then finally answered, âokayâ
It would be fine as long as she didn't open or unlock the door.
âHow do you know me? Did Sana and Tadashi tell you where I live?â
âNo, whoâre they?â Kyo asked when he noticed a hitch in her voice when she spoke the names.
âBoys from my school...theyâre always after me,â she told Kyo as her voice began to shake.
Kyoâs hands clenched by his sides.
Heâd been bullied too, because of his unnatural hair color, but as the aggressive kid he was he would always beat them up, so nobody dares bully him anymore, but now he felt a rage to go beat Tohruâs bullies up too, but he didn't tell her, he didn't want to scare her after all.
âIâm friends with your momâ he chose to re-direct their conversion onto something more joyful.
âMom? You know mom?â
âYeah I do, sheâs always told me a lot about you, so when she told me youâd be home alone day I decided to check up on you like a gentlemanâ Kyo spoke, sounding proud and a little cocky, but it seemed to lift Tohruâs spirit, because he heard her laugh, and his chest fluttered.
âSo hats what it sounds like he smiled, a smile only for him to see.
The two of them kept on talking for what felt hours, and he really felt like heâd done good.
He had helped her to not be lonely, but alas, it was bedtime and the two children parted.
âIâm homeâ Kyo spoke quietly as he walked into his master's, or rather adoptive father's home that was also his dojo. He hadnât expected anyone to come to greet him but he was wrong, because Kazuma, his adoptive father came running and enveloped him in an embrace.
âOh Kyo, where have you been. Itâs late, and I was so worriedâ
Kyo smiled against Kazumaâs kimono made of soft materials.
âI was at a friend's house,â he said.
Friend...the word felt funny on his tongue.
âWhat?â Kazuma suddenly sounded happier.
âYou made a friend Kyo?â
âYeah! Her nameâs Tohru, sheâs super kindâ
Kazuma smiled softly down at Kyo.
âFinallyâ he couldn't help but think. It was about time Kyo started opening up and making friends.
âThat makes me so glad, but next time do tell me when youâre staying over with your friendâ
âYeah okayâ
It wasnât the last time Kyo would spend an evening Iike that.
He was happy. Tohru was his friend, a good friend, and she even promised that even when heâd told her his name that she wouldnât tell her mom, simply because Kyo still found it embarrassing that the names Kyo and Kyoko were so similar.
But all good things had to come to an end...
That night that Tohru was lost he had vowed to find her, but he didn't...the rat did instead, and it felt like he had stolen his friend.
After that night, Kyo didn't go back to Tohru, and then, years later...he was the cause of her mother's death.
He really was the worst.
He could never see her again...he could never face her.
But he had to...eventually
/////////////////////
â years later â
He would admit it, barging through the roof of Shigureâs place hadn't been his finest moment, nor his best idea, but how was he supposed to know that they were housing a girl.
He already wanted to leave the house again, but his fight had been spoiled and he was pouting on the porch.
Thatâs when the same girl that had transformed him sat down beside him.
He wanted to yell at her, telling her thatâs she shouldnât be there, but he had to control his temper...
âKyo...â
âYEAH WHAT?!â
So much for controlling that temper.
âThatâs what Shigure called youâ
âSo?!â
The girl flinched and seem to become embarrassed and sad.
âOh u-uhm... I just used to have a friend called Kyoâ
Kyo stilled.
A...coincidence?
âHe used to comfort me when my mom was working late...he was really sweet and funnyâ she spoke and as she did Kyo felt a lump in his throat.
No way.
No way.
No way!
âA-ah Iâm sorry, you donât want to hear about that! Oh and whereâs my manners im-â
âTohru...I know...I remember youâ Kyo nodded and stood up, only to walk away.
I hc that Kyo can and will sometimes braid Tohruâs hair, but whenever she asks him how he learned to he blushed and changes the topic because the reality is that he uses to braid Kazumaâs hair when he was little
Okay Iâve seen a lot of Fruits basket content, but are we all really just gonna gloss over the fact that it was definitely Kyoâs father that drove his mother to suicide!?
In her suicide note she said that she felt guilty, and yeah of course she would if her husband blamed her for giving birth to what he would only describe to as a monster, a monster she did in fact love, although in a little twisted way, but of course this is also the reason that she chose to die instead of killing Kyo, because it wasnât because of him. He wasnât the reason for her suffering, her husband was.
