“i don’t… i don’t know. i never tried,” regina faltered, panic rising in her at emma’s question. she’d made the vault secure from all the people from the enchanted forest, but she never thought she’d have to be kept safe from an evil magical wraith out to get her. she’d never even been sure that emma would break the curse, though it was a possibility stemming all the way from when she first found out rumplestiltskin had set her up to adopt the savior’s son. forcing herself to take a deep breath, she clenched the hand that wasn’t marked into a fist, and felt her sharp nails dig into her palm.
brown eyes glanced up at emma, and flickered back down to her wrist. again and again, she didn’t know which one to be more concerned about. she could only hope that emma’s pacing and mumbling of incoherent words would be the end of her anxiety; because she was going to need a stable partner to rely on if the wraith broke through their barrier. her powers were growing every minute she spent not overworking herself, but she could never be too sure. one thing her mother had always taught her was to have a backup plan. “henry’s fine. he’s with your parents. they’ll protect him.” it’s all that she could hope for right now. “we need a plan, though, emma. if that wraith breaks through, we need to be ready.”
she looked down again, this time for a longer glance. and when she looked back, emma was standing closer than before. she was no longer pacing, just standing there, practically begging regina to say something useful; but regina didn’t know what to say. her throat felt clogged up, as if the ability to speak would be taken away any minute from her. the longer she stood in such close proximity to emma, the more she felt like she couldn’t move — and she didn’t want to.
since the moment emma had placed her hands on henry’s storybook, everything that followed happened in a chaotic whirlwind. believing was one thing, but to see and fight mythical creatures was another. she wasn’t cut out for this, savior or not.Â
“it’s not henry i’m concerned about.” the kid would be safe, she knew. it was the woman stood in front of her she feared for. the problem of the townsfolk out for her head was nothing now compared to the mark on regina’s wrist. “i’m no hero.” the words fell out helplessly, exhausted emerald eyes looked to the other. neither of them had answers, that was becoming fearfully apparent. “do you have anything in here at all that could possibly even help to hold it off until we figure something out?” emma hadn’t been in the vault long but there had to be some sort of magical object brought over with the curse.Â
unlike snow white and prince charming, emma swan didn’t inherit their positivity and trust in blind hope. this was her world and in that world, happy endings were hard to come by. as the two women stood hopelessly staring at the other, the longer emma looked into regina’s eyes - the calmer she found herself becoming. “we can do this together, right?” her tone less distressed. if there was anyone that could figure this out, it had to be regina mills.
only mere weeks ago, regina mills wanted emma swan to be gone far away from her town. she wanted her old life back — or rather, the life she had created. no matter how boring or dull it could be, she had henry and that’s all that mattered to her. she wasn’t exactly sure if the savior mattered to her yet, but she knew that emma mattered to henry. he would never forgive her if anything happened to his biological mother. neither would snow and david; and regina didn’t quite care about their forgiveness, but she would like to walk through her town without being hunted after.
besides, it was too late to back out now. she and emma were stuck in this mess together, and they were both going to survive. mustering up all of the strength and determination that she could, regina began to prepare. she’d heard stories of the wraith, and none of them seemed like something she could face without being seriously weakened. pulling out of the close proximity with emma, she gave a firm nod. they were going to beat this — together, even if a bit of awkward teamwork was needed. so far, they’d made it here. that alone was an accomplishment.
“yes. if you think we are going down without a fight, you have another thing coming, miss swan. . .” regina strolled past the tall bookshelf, running her fingers over the spines until she found the right one. tapping twice, it dropped into her hand and she began to flick through it until she found the right page. black ink splashed across the faded yellow page, drawing out the hat she knew all too well. lifting her head slightly, she peered around at emma. “please tell me you’ve seen alice in wonderland?”
rgincmills:
regina gave emma her moment to process their situation. she felt empathy for the blonde, even if the tiniest bit. after all of the mayhem regina had caused, coupled with the fact that she now had to learn to adjust to living with their son and the savior’s parents. it was truly a blessing that she wasn’t breaking down in the same way regina felt herself craving to do. but she wouldn’t — she couldn’t, not in front of anyone, especially emma.
henry would be fine, probably. however, it didn’t quell her motherly instincts to protect him. she was well aware that snow white and prince charming now saw themselves as henry’s official grandparents, but that didn’t mean they would soften their hearts to open up to her. if anything, others in the mob could easily overpower them, and use henry against her. it was no secret regina would sacrifice herself to save her son.
but she needed to focus on the present —— or at least try to. fears of being followed by the mob aside, they now had bigger problems to worry about. the stinging on her wrist, forming a dark purple sign, was a constant reminder. emma must have not noticed when they were casting the spell, but it had happened. she was marked. something was going to happen. “miss — emma…” she didn’t want to do this. she wanted to deal with it alone, but they were in this together now. she had already dragged emma swan into the vault with her. her voice was softer than usual and her entire body felt drained, but she managed to look the blonde in the face. then, slowly, she let her eyes travel down as she held out her wrist for the other woman to see. “i’ve been marked.”
before regina spoke a word, emma knew by her demeanor that something was wrong. the dread of what could possibly go wrong next, was soon to be confirmed as her eyes fell to the mark upon regina’s wrist. “regina..” she couldn’t believe this. they had just escaped an angry mob by the skin of their teeth and now this. “c-can it get in here?” she asked, afraid of the answer. the savior had promised henry he would protect his mom and she did, but this - well this was something that couldn’t be stopped by a gun. “it can’t kill you though, right? i mean surely you know how to stop it?” they were both hanging on by a thin thread at this point, each way they had seemed to go they were met with yet another obstacle.Â
running her hands through her hair, emma paced back and forth mumbling words that didn’t entirely make sense or would prove anyway useful. “i can’t, i can’t break my promise to henry.” she knew if something had happened regina, despite everything it would break the ten year olds heart. she was his mom, after all. the pacing stopped, the blonde now standing unusually close to the other. “there has to be something we can do regina, anything.” Â
“i don’t. . . i don’t know. i never tried,” regina faltered, panic rising in her at emma’s question. she’d made the vault secure from all the people from the enchanted forest, but she never thought she’d have to be kept safe from an evil magical wraith out to get her. she’d never even been sure that emma would break the curse, though it was a possibility stemming all the way from when she first found out rumplestiltskin had set her up to adopt the savior’s son. forcing herself to take a deep breath, she clenched the hand that wasn’t marked into a fist, and felt her sharp nails dig into her palm.

rgincmills:
regina was in shock. not only had they successfully transported themselves, which she did not think was going to be possible with her weak efforts and emma’s unstable powers, but the blonde savior had hugged her. in a full-on, arms wrapped around her, squeezing her so close she could smell what was distinctly known as emma. though, it was over as soon as it’d begun — throwing her for a whirlwind. the feeling of having emma’s arms thrown around her, mixed with the remnants of her fading powers, left her body sensitive and tingly. that left her vulnerable; and that left her face to be a mix of relief and devastation.
relief, because they were finally away from the angry mob wanting to murder her. devastation, because their son was still nowhere to be found and the angry mob still wanted her head delivered to snow white on a silver platter.
she’d never been good at discussing feelings — and, apparently, neither was emma. it seemed like a mutually agreed decision to not talk about the physical affection that had just transpired between two former mortal enemies. safe and sound, relishing in her bubble of protection, regina could finally take a moment to breathe. she didn’t need to look around the room as if she were a newcomer. she’d been in here a thousand times before. she knew this vault like the back of her hand. “no, miss swan… they cannot get in here.” she was trying harder than before to appear calm and cool, but the woman had already seen her in a slightly panicked state. “but, yes… we did it.” and for that, she managed a small half-smile.
from the moment henry collapsed right in front of her to now, emma swan hadn’t been given a single minute to herself to process the events that followed. she now believed, the curse was broken and she suddenly had parents eager for a happy reunion. only the savior wasn’t ready, she didn’t feel the same happiness they did - instead she felt a ping of anger. that anger however, was put on hold whenever regina’s life was threatened by those she had cursed. the woman she should have hated for causing all this, she was instead protecting her and had just embraced her in a way she rarely did anyone. nothing made sense.
they may have been safe for now, but emma couldn’t help but wonder what exactly was next. “regina, what now?” she questioned, looking to the brunette desperately for answers. stood before the evil queen so many questions were left unanswered, but they would surely have to wait. “he’ll be okay.” she assured her, knowing by the look on the others face her thoughts were on the ten year old boy. henry was safe, she knew he would be. he now had his grandparents to look out for him and although she didn’t truly know her parents, she knew mary margaret and david nolan.Â
regina gave emma her moment to process their situation. she felt empathy for the blonde, even if the tiniest bit. after all of the mayhem regina had caused, coupled with the fact that she now had to learn to adjust to living with their son and the savior’s parents. it was truly a blessing that she wasn’t breaking down in the same way regina felt herself craving to do. but she wouldn’t — she couldn’t, not in front of anyone, especially emma.

but we were something, don’t you think so?
rgincmills:
regina would have laughed at the other woman’s lack of composure, if she hadn’t felt a bit of awkwardness at having been complimented. she could feel her cheeks beginning to warm with the embarrassed blush that would hopefully be covered by her makeup. rolling her eyes somewhat playfully, she tilted the corners of her lips up.
“well, miss swan, i’m glad that you’re feeling better,” she took in the sight before her. “however, flattery will get you nowhere.”
she walked closer to the bed, snapping her fingers twice until a thermometer appeared in hand.
emma took the slightest pleasure in noting the slightest blush against the queen’s otherwise flawless skin. her scarlet-tinted cheeks only accented her beauty. as quickly as regina let down her guard with a jovial roll of her eyes, a small smile on her face, her regal demeanor was back in place. all the while, emma watched in awe, blaming her own lack of composure on the sleep-fog.Â
she smirked then grimaced in a matter of seconds when, with a literal snap of her fingers, the other woman held a thermometer in her hands.
“oh come on—” a child-like whine was her response “– i’m fine.”
“yes, well. . .” regina trailed off, at a quick loss for words. she inched the thermometer closer to the blonde’s face, racking her brain for something to say. she hates appearing as if she’s a bumbling fool, as if she cannot even form the words to a proper sentence. around emma, she has to constantly be on her toes, working hard to keep her control in-check.
it’s not that she wants to feel this way. truly, if it were up to her, emma swan would be nothing more to her than an acquaintance. but that’s not how fate would have it, and she suddenly finds herself secretly glad that henry pushed so hard for emma to have a spot in this family. it’s incredibly difficult to imagine not having the savior by her side, constantly following her around — even if she curses the emotion swarming in her regal figure.
“i’ll be the judge of that.” she settles on that, pushing the device further toward her. “open up.”

brown eyes narrowed at the woman standing across the office. her heels clacked against the wood as she had rose from her chair to greet her. the mayor was all about being polite, even if it was under false pretenses. regardless of her feelings toward the woman, brewing deep in the back of her mind, regina kept a half smile on her face.
“saskia — it’s been awhile since you’ve last requested a meeting.” twenty minutes before the woman’s arrival, she had ensured everything was set up perfectly. her stray hairs were tucked to the side. her office had no extra cluttering papers laying around. her secretary had left them with a closed wooden door and a pitcher of fresh lemonade waiting on the coffee stand. “what brings you in?”
rgincmills:
she’d just barely caught the savior’s words, mumbled deep within the protective layers of blankets. that brought a smile upon regina’s red-painted lips. aware that the blonde was semi-awake, she had no more hesitance in pushing the door open further and moving closer. emma seemed — almost relaxed.
“good morning, dear,” she offered, friendly. they were friends now. she didn’t need to be awkward around emma swan — her son’s other mother — the woman who’d slept in her guest room last night; did she? “how are you feeling?”
she cleared her throat, trying to rid it of the sleepy drawl. it remained. “much better.” she pushed herself up on her elbows, daring to open her eyes. her breath caught and made a startled gasp.
regina stood in the doorway looking like the definition of a queen. painted lips and all. emma was staring with her mouth agape, looking very much like a fish. gaining her composure, she took the next opportunity to rub the sleep from her eyes. “okay– how do you manage to look like that this early in the morning?”
apparently her filter had not woken up, yet.
regina would have laughed at the other woman’s lack of composure, if she hadn’t felt a bit of awkwardness at having been complimented. she could feel her cheeks beginning to warm with the embarrassed blush that would hopefully be covered by her makeup. rolling her eyes somewhat playfully, she tilted the corners of her lips up.

a smile played across regina’s lips as she looked down at the little girl. her smiles always came naturally with her children. her heart always warmed to see them happy and enjoying their lives. “how was your day at school, sweetheart?” it had quickly become one of the questions regina first asked once getting home from work — because, hearing about whatever joyful thing she and henry did in class always made her feel better about her days.
“no, i don’t. . .” cora certainly never did. everything out of her own mother’s mouth had been cruel. her intention was to hurt regina; where regina’s intention was to make her daughter feel all the love she’d never gotten during her childhood. however, she knows her daughter is too young for that conversation. “i’m saying it because it is true.”
she hoped her tone held no room for argument. she didn’t like hearing any sort of negativity come from her children. it was like a direct stab to her heart — and at times, it felt as if snow white’s arrow had pierced her chest. “you’re beautiful.”
rgincmills:
emma’s hand felt strange in her own. not the bad kind of strange, but the good kind. it was a sensation regina was not used to. most of the hands that had touched her were hurtful. on top of that, regina could feel her magic was running low. it wouldn’t last long, and she feared it would not be enough to overpower emma’s if the blonde’s spiraled. they’d have to make do with wherever they ended up, hoping it wasn’t in the dead center of the mob — because there was no way she’d have enough fireballs for all of them.
“breathe, emma,” she reminded firmly. she watched as the blonde savior closed her eyes, and felt her tightening grip. knowing how strong and overwhelming it felt in the beginning, regina squeezed back. their magic was joining together — the savior’s powerful light that she hadn’t known existed before now, was wrapping around regina’s dark swirls, claiming dominance because of how weak she currently was. it felt good, being encased in emma’s powers. “picture where you want to go. picture it, and picture us inside of it.”
emma’s own magic was unreliable, it was something she almost feared. the power of the twos magic combined however was overwhelming in a way she could never imagine, her fear subsiding to the soothing sound of regina’s voice. following the others instructions, she kept her focus. emma could feel it, her magic flowing out of her, pure white smoke surrounding the two and consuming them both. hesitantly she opened her eyes - the fear that she had failed regina weighed heavy on her chest.
“we did it! we actually did it!” she exclaimed excitedly upon realisation that they were safe, her arms flinging around the brunette hugging her. quick to realise what she was doing, emma pulled back. “sorry..” she muttered, gaze dropping to the floor. she felt like a complete idiot, but they were safe and that was the main thing. awkwardly clearing her throat, her head lifted and did a quick scan of the room they were now stood in. “they definitely can’t get in here, right?” she questioned in an attempt to quickly move on from the inappropriate embrace.
regina was in shock. not only had they successfully transported themselves, which she did not think was going to be possible with her weak efforts and emma’s unstable powers, but the blonde savior had hugged her. in a full-on, arms wrapped around her, squeezing her so close she could smell what was distinctly known as emma. though, it was over as soon as it’d begun — throwing her for a whirlwind. the feeling of having emma’s arms thrown around her, mixed with the remnants of her fading powers, left her body sensitive and tingly. that left her vulnerable; and that left her face to be a mix of relief and devastation.

rgincmills:
regina had collapsed into utter exhaustion as soon as she fell into her own bed. she’d planned to set an alarm to check up on emma throughout the night; but her eyes had closed and she entered a deep sleep the moment her head hit the pillow. it wasn’t often she could sleep well, so she took this moment and all it’s advantages.
she did, however, force herself to wake up completely when her eyes had opened and she’d caught sight of the morning rays of sunlight. she didn’t like oversleeping — afraid she’d miss something important. often times, her work called for her to be there at early hours. she took her time in getting ready, wanting to give her sleeping house guest some extra time to rest. emma’s state of health today would determine what their plans were. but when she quietly entered the guest room, the blonde was still lying there, seemingly asleep.
the bright light streaming in through the windows woke emma, prematurely. she groaned to herself when she saw the ungodly early hour on the clock. still, despite that, she was surprised to find that she felt rested. maybe it was the fact that she was drugged with cold medicine; maybe it was the fact that even the guest mattress felt as if it were made out of clouds; maybe it was that she felt as if she could relax, here. (that thought alone was enough to cause her to shake her head. she stored that idea away to panic about at a later date). no matter the reason, emma slept well for the first time in a long time.Â
not ready to leave the enchanted cocoon of warmth and comfort, emma settled back into the mattress. regina alerted emma of her presence by the sharp clicking of her heels against the floor. the door barely made a creak. eyes still closed, emma mumbled, “good morning.”
she’d just barely caught the savior’s words, mumbled deep within the protective layers of blankets. that brought a smile upon regina’s red-painted lips. aware that the blonde was semi-awake, she had no more hesitance in pushing the door open further and moving closer. emma seemed — almost relaxed.
“good morning, dear,” she offered, friendly. they were friends now. she didn’t need to be awkward around emma swan — her son’s other mother — the woman who’d slept in her guest room last night; did she? “how are you feeling?”
rgincmills:
“don’t you think that if there was another way, i’d say that to begin with?” she regretted snapping, but the instinct came naturally. emma swan, savior, mighty and strong and powerful — was scared. mayor regina wanted to laugh in her face, tell her to suck it up and remind her that she owed her for something. mom regina wanted to find henry and keep him safe from the horrors of whatever was happening now, but there was a chance that he was on the other side with that crowd, waiting to see her rot. but the side of regina that nobody had seen in awhile — the young, vulnerable princess who’d been morphed and manipulated into what her mother wanted, who’d been scared of the same exact thing emma was fearing now — wanted to take emma’s hands and show her that magic was not as scary as it may sound.
“emma…” she took a deep breath, running her tongue over the roof of her mouth. the name still sounded foreign to her lips, but she wanted to appear comforting. they could scream and yell at each other later. right now, regina wanted to get to safety. “we don’t have a choice. if you want to make it to safety, we have to do this.” she didn’t have to worry about the mob tearing her to pieces, yet emma still stayed. that was another strange concept to regina: someone, especially someone she’d hurt, jumping in to help save her. not many people did that, not unless she’d ordered them to back in the enchanted forest.
“you have to learn to control it. magic is emotion.” she shuffled a foot closer. closing her eyes momentarily, she summoned all of the strength she had to light the first part of the spell. she felt it running through her aching wrists, nearly popping up out of the skin on her palms, before the familiar warm glow of light was felt. when she opened her eyes again, she was holding a purple beam — which would slowly die out if emma did not help soon. “control your fear. if you tell yourself you’re afraid, your magic will think you’re afraid. it won’t do what you ask it to.” brown eyes flickered up to meet emma’s apprehensive face. “just — here, take my hand.”
emma ignored the snapping, she knew it was panic talking. time was running out, and fast. the fear bubbling inside of her threatening to over boil at any given moment. only she couldn’t give up, not for regina but for henry. despite the sheriff and mayor’s past, she was still henry’s mom.Â
hearing her name fall from regina’s lips had somewhat calmed her panic state. it was a simple gesture and wouldn’t mean anything to most, but to her it was everything. for the first time since they met, emma felt like her equal. the blondes head bopped a few times, making the other aware that she understood what she was saying. she just needed a moment, only they didn’t have a moment. she watched regina closely, curious as to what she were doing. only it soon became clear, she was using magic - the purple beam now floating just above the palm of the others hand a huge giveaway.
gulping hard, she went on to inhale a deep breath - exhaling it through her nose. “okay, i can do this. control my emotions, i can do that.” she told herself in reassurance, clenching and unclenching her hands as she tried to prepare herself for what would come next. green eyes met brown, emma telling herself to keep her gaze there. regina was her strength right now and she needed that if they were going to do this. slowly and almost reluctantly, her hand took the others. immediately she could feel regina’s magic course through her like electricity. eyelids fell shut, the savior focused her thoughts. she could feel it, she could feel her own magic intensifying - her hand squeezing regina’s tightly as she embraced it.Â
emma’s hand felt strange in her own. not the bad kind of strange, but the good kind. it was a sensation regina was not used to. most of the hands that had touched her were hurtful. on top of that, regina could feel her magic was running low. it wouldn’t last long, and she feared it would not be enough to overpower emma’s if the blonde’s spiraled. they’d have to make do with wherever they ended up, hoping it wasn’t in the dead center of the mob — because there was no way she’d have enough fireballs for all of them.
