A moment of appreciation for John Dare Howland (1843-1914), who at 14 ran away from his home in Ohio, fell in with the mountain men fur traders, hunted buffalo with the Sioux, then struck out for Denver in search of gold. At 18 he joined the 1st Colorado Infantry and served in the New Mexico Campaign of the Civil War. He was a scout in the Indian Wars, an artist/correspondent for Harper’s Weekly and Frank Leslie’s, a peace commissioner, and a painter thought to have created around 300 paintings, primarily of Western scenes.
