No one asked for this, but I’m in a tutorial mood so here we go! :)
You know when you make a gifset and want the colors to be the same? So you use the same PSD on all of them, but they’re still different? This one’s for you.
1.) Open your reference image (can be the other gif you’re trying to match, a psd, png, etc., doesn’t matter)
2.) Click Save for Web like you would when you go to save a gif, but DON’T save the gif
3.) Click the dropdown arrow on the top right corner of the color table
4.) Click save color table
5.) Name the file and click save
Now choose a gif scene that has somewhat similar colors (warm or cool toned basically) This one is pinkish so it’ll look good with the color table
You can edit the gif to be as close color wise to the example, such as adding a certain PSD or adding selective layers to the gif to get warmer or cooler tones. The point of loading a color table is to get the EXACT same color hues in each gif.
In this example gif shown above, the colors are already along the same lines so I don’t even need to add any adjustment layers.
6.) Once you’re ready, go to Export for Web and click color table dropdown again, but this time click Load Color Table
7.) Select your saved file and click Open.
8.) Then save the gif and it’s ready
This is really helpful when you’re trying to get all gifs in a color set to be the same colors. Hope at least one person gets some use out of it.

were u ever like gahd these camerapeople again making yet another stage ungiffable. yeah me too.
sooo here in this tutorial i'm gonna try to explain how to pan gifs so ur subject can remain centered or at least not be out of frame, sth like this:
this is a more advanced tutorial, in a sense that i'll assume you know how to make gifs, not in a sense that this is complicated lmao, okay let's gooo:
essentially this is what's happening and what we gonna do:
before we dive into the how tho, it must be said that photoshop's timeline can only do linear movements so no easing. at times it can look unnatural or choppy or... frankly both. (if you want to know more about this look up ease-in-out animation curve, or easing curves)
part 01 · prepping gifs
as i wrote in my gif making process post i usually crop my gifs bigger than they usually will be. e.g. a 268px gif will be cropped to anything between 468-540px. sometimes because i want to have the opportunity to position the gif a bit differently but most of the time because i know 268px is a reeeaaalllyyy tight place and i need to make some movement adjustments especially for weekend music shows where the camerapeople seem to be on crack or just very into experimenting
part 02 · let the keyframe madness begin
whichever way you are making gifs just open up your gif and crop it to the final size, colour it and whatever else you fancy. once you have everything ready just open your video layer on your timeline (if you don't know where you will be able to see it in the video later)
you will see 3 tracks, transform, opacity and style. for this we will use the transform because it contains movements (but also resizing if that's what you fancy).
all we need to do is create keyframes which will define what is the position of the video layer at a certain time. so e.g. here we are moving this box to the right by 50px in 1 second.
to create keyframes click on the timer icon in front of the position label and photoshop will create you one. the active one will always be yellow. if you move on the timeline with your playhead (that thing that is moving) and you resize/move your layer photoshop will create yet another keyframe for you without you needing to click on it, because it will recognise the change. so all you need to figure out is when the movement starts and which position your layer should be, and the same for the end and ps will take care of the rest.
part 03 · some things to consider when panning gifs
now this is the part where it gets subjective and less tutorial like. so all i can provide is some explanation how i go about it and what i pay attention to.
tip #1: match the movement speed to the gif
whenever you are panning a gif it may result in the gif being choppy bc the framerate and your movements are not matching up, so it's either too fast and photoshop needs to move your image by too many pixels frame by frame or it's too slow resulting in basically the same thing but kinda reversed, either way it won't look smooth. this mostly happens when the original footage is moving (there is a quick camera pan/movement) and you are trying to keep it in place, less when the original is kinda still and the subject is moving. this is kind of a trial and error process: try moving your keyframes closer to each other or maybe further, add more/less movement between two keyframes and just see witch results in a smoother gif.
tip #2: try moving your gif once in one direction
there are times when your subject might go out of frame multiple times and you have the urge to keyframe the whole gif and keep them in center the whole time. however, as we do not have easing curves in photoshop the switch between moving something from one direction to the other one will be very visible. so try placing your subject in a way that you'll only need to make one movement and it's kinda okay all the way thru or pick the most annoying 'placement' you want to correct. here in this example it mostly bugged me that the gif was not centered at the end, but onda kinda remained in frame.
tip #3: pan your gifs when there is a quick zoom/movement
sometimes whatever i do the gif will look choppy regardless one movement or not. in these moments, and these moments ONLY we can be thankful for the sometimes unnecessary zooming that's happening and reposition our gifs while the zooming is happening. since there is already a drastic movement you can get away with basically anything, as long as you time the beginning and the end where the zoom begins and ends. also i must add that you can pan stage gifs way more and more drastically bc there is a lot of things happening in the background, so adding a bit of movement on top of all the other movements is less noticeable than... moving footage where e.g. the background is static.
✨something extra✨ · panning/moving other things
so what we looked at is moving the whole gif to fit into the frame we have, but with this technique obviously you can move all sorts of stuff, text, texture whatever you fancy. you can apply this process to the layer you wanna move and this is when you get these:
a sidenote: the fade effect is literally the same keyframe business but instead of playing with position keyframes you change the opacity keyframes.
aaand that is all, if you have any questions my askbox is always open so hmu <3
tagging @sanhwalynight bc of requesting reasons hehe
i am so excited to share this with you guys because this tip has saved me SO. MUCH. TIME. it literally takes 60 seconds to do and you’re good to go. and the results are AMAZING. i used to do everything in procreate by hand and now LOOK AT ME BREEZING THROUGH THIS TEDIOUS WORK. so without further ado let’s get to it. (we are doing the above displayed jungkook png)
what you need: photoshop + basic photoshop skills + ✨1 min of your life✨
At times, subtitles can be overlooked. So I've decided to create this comprehensive guide for beginner and experienced gifmakers to styling gif subtitles.
By no means does this post intend to limit the way you do your subtitles.
Please like/reblog if this has helped you and feel free to hit me up for any questions and concerns! ♥︎
↓ SEE SUBTITLE GUIDE UNDER THE CUT ↓
NOTE: I've used only screencaps for most examples due to the 10 pics per post limit, so let's just pretend they're animated 😂 My apologies for the very bad quality!
Gif Subtitles Style Guide
[1] Spelling
Look up words and names you don't recognize (fictional or not) to know how they're spelled.
Look up the proper capitalization and hyphenation of terms, even if you're already familiar with it (e.g. macOS, Professor McGonagall, Spider-Man).
[2] Words
Long Paragraphs
Subtitles are added to be read, so to ensure readability, avoid putting long paragraphs in a single gif.
Try to have only 1–2 rows of text in one gif, 3 rows at most. To do this, make sure there are only 1–2 sentences per gif then move the rest in the next gifs.
The first gif below is an example of a long paragraph cramped into one gif.
The example above splits the paragraph across several gifs, making it easier on the eyes and giving each sentence more impact.
Widows
Widows are lone words on new rows of lines.
Widows leave too much white space at the bottom of a gif. It interrupts the reader’s eye and diminishes readability.
In the first gif below, "just hearts" is an example of a widow.
To fix a widow, split your subtitles before an article, conjunction, preposition or punctuation then continue it in the next row. To do this:
Split your subtitles before a point in conversation (i.e. articles, auxiliary verbs, conjunctions, prepositions or punctuations). Doing this would also depend on the flow of the conversation OR the overall look of the subtitles.
Continue the conversation in the next row
In the second example above, the focus is on the flow of the conversation: the widow was fixed by breaking the line before "as well as" (which kind of functions like a conjunction), making the flow of reading much better.
In the third example, the focus is on how the subtitle looks: the sentence was split before "souls" (which follows the auxiliary verb "have") to make the width of the overall subtitle more even.
NOTE: The second and third example show there's no definite way in splitting subtitles. Just be mindful of widows and do whatever looks good to you :)
Widowers
(To be honest I'm not quite sure what the term is so I've decided to just call this one a widower 😂 #equality #girlbossing)
A widower is the first word of a sentence left behind.
A widower follows a punctuation in the same row.
Fixing a widower is similar to fixing a widow except we're keeping an eye on lone words that follow punctuations.
In the first example below, the widower is "But" which follows an exclamation point (a punctuation).
In the second example above, the widower was fixed by moving it in the next row with the rest of the sentence, which is less awkward to read unlike the first one.
In the third example, it has moved the second row ("But I'm so lonely") back up with the first since there's ample space. Not so lonely anymore, is it? 😂
[3] Text
Font vs. Typeface
To this day, I still get confused. Hopefully, writing all this will finally make the distinction stick.
Typefaces are also known as font families. It's a specific collection of fonts varying from Thin to Black, Narrow to Wide, Roman and Italic.
For example: Bebas, Baskerville and Futura are all typefaces
Fonts are part of a typeface. Each variation of a typeface is a font.
For example: Montserrat Thin, Arial Italic and Georgia Bold are all fonts
Serif vs. Sans Serif
Serifs have serifs.
A serif is a small stroke attached to the end of a larger stroke in a letter or symbol. Think Times New Roman, Baskerville, and Didot.
'Sans' is old French for 'without', so Sans Serifs are literally without serifs. Think Arial, Century Gothic and Comic Sans.
Content creators most often use sans serifs such as Arial Bold Italic, Calibri Bold Italic and Helvetica Bold Italic. These fonts aren't flashy and don't distract the viewer from the main visual, the animated pictures.
TIP: Avoid (ultra) Black and Heavy fonts especially with paragraphs because it will make the sentences look bulky and hard to read.
Some gifmakers apply Faux Bold and Faux Italic to their text (the ones highlighted pink in the examples below). Apply whatever looks good to you.
The first example above looks good, but my personal preference is the second where faux bold is selected. The third one looks much too italicized, since the font itself is already italic.
Alignment
There are four ways to align text:
Left
Center
Right
Justified
As you may have noticed, gif subtitles are center-aligned and then centered in the gif.
TIP: Avoid justifying especially long lines of text. Doing so will create awkward spaces, making it difficult to read.
Tracking and Leading
Tracking adjusts letter spacing.
Leading is the amount of space between two rows.
In 'textbook' typography, increasing the leading does improve readability since it helps guide the reader's eye to the start of the next row (especially for multiple rows of text). However, I think this one doesn't apply to Tumblr subtitles. Compare examples 1 and 2 with 3 below.
The first example above has leading and tracking set to default. Most typefaces already have a set tracking and leading amount, so if it already looks good, then leave it as is.
The second example has the leading decreased which I found is what most gifmakers do, and it looks great! I've added 22 tracking to add some breathing space for the letters since faux bold is applied.
The third example has the leading increased, making the two rows of text look separated. The tracking further increased, making this one harder to read compared to the first and second example.
TIPS: The leading/tracking amount would also depend on what font you're using so feel free to lessen it, add more or leave it be! :)
Spacing
Please be mindful of the space between the subtitles and the edges of the gif (lined with pink). @kylos notes that Tumblr cuts off the bottom of gifs by 2px on the desktop version.
There is no definite amount, so just make sure to avoid placing your subtitles too close to the edges like in the examples below:
The first example above has the subtitles too close to the bottom edge and the second has the subtitles too close to the sides.
TIPS:
To avoid example 1: Nudge your text higher by selecting the text layer and pressing: shift + [up arrow key] once, and if you want to make slight adjustments, press only the up/down arrow key.
To avoid example 2: Since there's still enough space in the second row, move some words from the first row in the next line to add some space at the sides, keeping in mind what we've learned in the [2] Words 'chapter'.
NOTE: Sometimes, example 2 (or every example in this whole guide really) cannot be avoided, and that's ok. I've only included it as an example for when it can be avoided :)
Font Colors
A color is used to indicate the speaker and is assigned to a certain speaker.
For one speaker / a first speaker: the standard color is white.
For a second speaker: gifmakers commonly use shades ranging from yellow to orange, some use other colors such as blue or purple.
For a third, fourth, fifth speaker: the colors are up to you.
TIP: Avoid using black or dark shades.
Font Sizes
For 540px gifs: 18 to 23 pt
For 268px gifs: 14 pt or higher
TIP: For 268px gifs, it's best to start at 16 pt if you're catering to mobile users or if you yourself frequently use the mobile app.
Nowadays, gifmakers are leaning towards bigger font sizes (i.e. 18+ pt), making subtitles readable on mobile.
NOTE:
The font sizes I've mentioned above would also depend on the font.
So depending on the font, going lower than 16 pt will make the subtitles difficult to read and strain the reader's eyes.
Feel free to do some experimenting of your own! Just keep in mind the readability, paragraphs, widows and widowers :)
Below, I've demonstrated the relation between the font size and the gif size (540px and 268px).
As seen in the first and second 540px examples (and also maybe the third for those with bad eyesight), smaller text sizes don't really work with 540px gifs.
To be honest, I thought 12 and 14 pt would read better on 268px gifs but as you can see, you can't see it. 😂 It would ultimately depend on the font and the length of the text but for this Calibri Bold Italic font, 16+ pt reads better.
[4] Finishing Touches
Stroke
Adding Stroke will make subtitles even more legible, especially if the background is as bright as the text color.
TIPS:
Make sure your stroke color is black (or any color as long as it's in a shade much darker than the text) with an opacity greater than 80%.
The stroke thickness would also depend on your font so if 1px looks like nothing on the font you're using then try upping it to 2px or 3px. Different strokes for different fo(lks)nts 😂
The first example below shows what a subtitle looks without a stroke. Incomplete, right? And without the added drop shadow, "sit" would blend in with the background.
The 1px stroke in second example already looks good and readable to me.
The 2px stroke in the third example is readable, but it looks too dark and bulky.
Drop Shadow
Drop Shadow makes subtitles even more legible, especially if the background is as bright as the text color, just like Stroke.
Drop Shadow gives more depth to subtitles.
For this topic, each gifmaker most likely has their own drop shadow settings, such as the ones I've listed below: (Click to view their settings)
itsphotoshop's
maziekeen's
kylos's
favreaus's
dingyuxi's
What unites all their settings is using the color black #000000.
TIPS:
For dark backgrounds, adding drop shadow isn't necessary since it won't be seen anymore.
Since it's a shadow, make sure your stroke color is black or grey. If it's too dark, lower the opacity.
Making the shadow's distance too far away from the text tends to look distracting and hard to read. A distance between 2–4 is the best way to go.
A large drop shadow size sometimes gives the illusion of blurry text, so try sticking to sizes below 5px.
These tips would also depend on your font and font size. Do what looks good to you and remember to keep in mind the overall readability.
Set the Anti-Aliasing Method
Anti-aliasing produces smooth-edged type by partially filling the edge pixels. As a result, the edges of the type blend into the background.
None: Applies no anti-aliasing, looks very jagged. Avoid this.
Sharp: Makes subtitles look its sharpest, which is the goal.
Crisp: Makes subtitles look somewhat sharp, which is also the goal.
Strong: Makes subtitles look bolder. Avoid this since we already use bold fonts / apply faux bold.
Smooth: Type appears smoother, but personally it just looks blurry to me, so for Tumblr gif subtitles let's avoid this.
TIP: Most gifmakers use the Crisp anti-aliasing method.
〰️
Aaaand that's the end of this comprehensive guide! I hope you learned as much as I did when making this tutorial :) Again, by no means does this post intend to limit the way you do your subtitles.
Please like/reblog if this has helped you and feel free to hit me up for any questions and concerns! ♥︎
Hey I have been thinking of making gifs but i have no idea where to start so I thought y not ask a fellow carat who makes awesome gifss❤️
A little guidance would mean a lot!!
aww, anon!! thank you for coming to me for this. i love talking people’s ears off!! DFJKJDFKDF but that being said, i’ll keep this under a keep reading since i’ll go through things quite thoroughly!
there’s really a million and one ways to make gifs, but i’ll show you how i do it and the basics in general (+ maybe some alternatives). keep in mind that i use windows though, so i’m not sure how helpful this will be if you’re on a mac. anyhoot, i’ll be dividing this tutorial into 6 parts, namely sourcing, choosing a program to resize/import with (vapoursynth and/or KM player basics), photoshop basics (KM Player tutorial extension), sharpening, coloring, and exporting.
the primary issue with sourcing is that videos we want to gif come from different sources, and not all of them are conveniently downloadable. i’m going to list a few different sites/programs (that are free! <3) that allow me to download these videos!
4k Video Downloader: this program allows you to download from multiple sites, but i mainly use this for youtube. it’s better than other online alternatives (such as y2mate, which you can use if you can’t download this!) since it allows you to download above 1080p and also allows you to download subtitles if you want to. make sure to download it as .mkv though because options above 1080p will not show up if you’re in .mp4!
Soshistagram: this is my go-to vlive downloader! it also allows you to choose the quality of your download.
Twitter Video Downloader & Instagram Downloader: exactly as their name implies, lol. twitter and instagram don’t really provide HD videos so i don’t mind downloading them through these.
Inspect Element: when worse comes to worse and if you're incredibly desperate to gif something that cannot be downloaded from any of these, you can (almost) always rip it off from the source code, lol. i won’t get into too much detail about this since so much information about this is readily available on the internet!
as you may have noticed, i’ve been mentioning quality for a lot of these! while being able to download content is the priority, it is also really important (maybe even equally important) to download high quality resources. it’s not a very good idea to gif from anything below 720p as they usually don’t come out as nice, so to get videos like these, i usually go to either the sources themselves (e.g: their official youtube account, music shows’ respective youtube accounts, studio choom, etc.) and if i won’t be able to find them there, they’re surely on our beloved and reliable rosebay (who provides almost every svt content out there! people usually go here to get performance stages and huya streams, but almost everything is literally here, lol). you can also find performance stages on kpopexciting and kpop24hours (which requires membership, so watch out for when they open registrations up!). that being said though, it’s quite hard to find sources for chinaline, but legohouse is the best for this!
when sourcing from fansites, always check if they allow editing first! if it’s not explicitly said, you can always ask them. (most of them reply :D) if you don’t know how to, here’s a good guide for such! thank you @hanwooz for letting us know. <3
it’s also worth noting that performance stages and a few other high quality content come in .tp/.ts files which you might need a different media player for. for this, i use vlc for everything! this is also available for mac.
sometimes, you might need to extract files (as sources compress them to take up less space during download). i use peazip to do this! it’s a great AND FREE alternative to winrar.
you might also encounter download limits on gdrive. you can simply make a copy of the file, then download it from the copy.
on to the more interesting part, we finally start making our gif! for this, i use photoshop cc (i downloaded it here lol) and vapoursynth OR KM player. these aren’t the only programs you can use, but these are what worked for me and my old 32-bit laptop, lol. you can find 64-bit and mac alternatives on the links as well i believe, and if not, you can just do a bit of digging around on those sites!
(additional notes: another alternative for photoshop is GIMP but i don’t really remember how to use it. there are also add-ons for photoshop such as topaz, but i (again) cannot use those, but i heard that they help a lot with making gifs look clean! avisynth is also an alternative to vapoursynth, but vapoursynth has added features i believe)
gifs are basically just a moving pictures, so you can either capture moments you like as a video or as a series of images. photoshop accepts both. as for me, i cannot import videos directly to photoshop so i do them frame by frame. to capture these images, one method is by processing them through KM Player.
km player is basically a media player with a feature that allows you to get snapshots of videos continually (therefore, the series of images).
step 1: simply go to the timestamp of the moment you want to gif (i usually watch the videos first and type out all the timestamps of all the moments i want to gif) and press CTRL + G
this would then show up. you can choose where you want your snapshots to go by changing the folder that’s highlighted. as for the image format, i only use either PNG or JPG/JPEG, as they’re the best quality from this media player. PNGs take a lot longer to capture though. the numbers to extract tells you how many frames it would capture. i set it to ‘continuously’ so gifs don’t come out choppy/look like they’re skipping. it’s almost the same principle with the other panel named frames to extract. as for the rest, make sure to follow every setting on screenshot!
step 2: afterwards, click start, and play your video. your laptop might get quite slow when this process starts.
step 3: when you’ve gone through your timestamp, press end, and go to the folder you previously chose!
your folder should look similar to this:
simply erase all the frames that you don’t want to be included in your gif, and you’re ready to import! we’ll be keeping these aside for not and learn another way to get frames.
another alternative is to use vapoursynth. this is a whole LOT easier and basically does all of the work for you. i really recommend this! ever since i got it to work just a few months ago, i can never really make gifs without it anymore. i use the old version though (rip </3), so i won't have the new preprocessors, denoise filters, and sharpening. i suggest you always take the most updated one because i heard they make a lot of difference output-wise!
it’s very important to know tumblr size dimensions when it comes to gifs (whether you’re going to use vapoursynth or not), but i’m including it on this part since it’s crucial to how vs (vapoursynth) works. your gifs may look good on photoshop, but if they’re the wrong size they’ll inevitably end up blurry on tumblr unless someone clicks on them. here are the dimensions (image made by @dazzlingkai):
you can use any height for these gifs, but these are the width dimensions you need to follow!
nibreon has a video on how to gif using vs, but if you like text better, i can also provide it step by step for you.
step 1: to get started, simply drag your file to the vs shortcut. and this window should appear
simply encode your chosen timestamp (in this case mine is 00:02:02) and press enter. (i don’t really trim my videos as other CCs do and just send them straight to vs, haha.)
step 2: this second line then asks you how long you want the video to be trimmed/previewed for. if your timestamp is 00:02:02-00:02:08, then what you’ll encode on this line is 00:00:06.
step 3: this resizer will then show up in your default browser
this is where the size dimensions become important! choose the size of your liking and resize the video as you want. i find resizing much easier with vs as you have more control over the size with real time feedback.
additional notes:
opacity: just allows you to view the area outside of your size width. doesn’t really matter much, but i love it as it helps me precisely resize gifs especially when i don’t want to include captions/subtitles.
preprocessor: refers to how vs would process (lol??) your gifs frame by frame. this is crucial to how your gifs would look! it is explained very well and thoroughly here, but basically, it tells you the speed and the manner in which the images/initial video of your gif will be exported in. this one doesn’t matter much on regular videos, but for performances (.ts/.tp, etc.) it makes a lot of difference. i usually use qtgmc 60 slow on performances. for the rest, i use qtgmc 30 fast (or 60 fast when there are very few frames just so they would run smoother). i’m also always on resamplehq (the second part of preprocessing)! a lot of CCs don’t use preprocessing for regular videos though (.mp4, .mkv, etc.). i can’t explain this part very well, but i’ll include more tutorials and examples (although very few) at the end dw!
denoise filters: smoothens out your gifs. very useful especially if the source is grainy! i always use KNLM for this but you can try BM3D as well.
sharpening: pretty self-explanatory. it just makes your gifs look clearer/sharper! i use finesharp almost always set to 1, but it really depends on your preference. i also do additional sharpening on photoshop most of the time though!
step 4: after this, just copy and paste the text that’s in the upper right corner to vapoursynth. it should look similar to this.
step 5: just press f8 (or go to script, then encode video). this window will show up.
this is what you’ll usually do if you want to save it as a video, but since i can’t import videos, i change the preset to ‘export to png sequence’. some CCs like trimming the video here (as you can see at the bottom, there’s a label for the number of frames), but just like what we did with KM Player i just export it all (by pressing start). make sure your header is also set to Y4M if you’re exporting to PNG!
step 6: you’ll see all of your frames on the vs folder and if you didn’t trim (like me jdsjdskj), you can just erase unwanted scenes (just like what we did for KM Player)!
and this is where it ends for vapoursynth!
now that we have all the frames ready, we’re going to be using photoshop and get all the fun stuff going!
KM Player is a lot more tedious (can’t believe i used this for more than a year omg), so we’re gonna have to do a few more steps and pick up from where we’ve left.
step 1: import your frames by going to file, scripts, then ‘load files into stack’
step 2: click browse, select the folder you saved your frames in, select all the frames, click enter, and then press ‘okay’
step 3: your workspace should look something like this. click create frame animation.
(if you don’t see the timeline below, you can enable it by going to window, then check the timeline option)
step 4: make frames from layers.
step 5: reverse frames.
step 6: the trickiest part of giffing from km player!! (thankfully, we’re only making 540px gifs for this tutorial) estimate the area you want to include, then crop your canvas by pressing ‘C’ on your keyboard or selecting the crop tool on the toolbar (it’s the 5th icon here on my screen). after cropping, your workspace might look similar to this.
step 7: and now we FINALLY resize like barbarians :D i always like shortcuts (you can tell by now) and taking the easy route, so just click ‘CTRL + ALT + I’ so the image resizing window can pop up. alternatively, you can go to image, then image size.
now set the width to 542 (which is 2 pixels larger than tumblr’s required width) and press ‘okay’
step 8: as you can see, there are weird white/kind of faded pixels on the edges, and that’s the exact reason why we needed those 2 extra pixels from the last step. you can remove this the hard way by zooming at 1800% and removing 2 pixels per side or we can always do the easy route and press ‘CTRL + ALT + C’ (or go to image, then canvas size) and then resize the canvas to 540 (don’t forget to remove 2 pixels from whatever height u have too!) <3
step 9: now we have a clean and sexy gif. you can completely stop here, and start exporting, but coloring makes all the difference (to me at least)!
as for vapoursynth, you only need to follows step 1 to 5 (aka importing <3)
these steps aren’t ‘necessary’ but these are the essence and what makes tumblr gifs tumblr gifs (aka prettie <3).
there is so much potential with sharpening alone! usually, CCs sharpen additionally through photoshop (if they’ve gone through vs) by converting these frames into a smart object. you can do so by:
step 1: press ‘CTRL + ALT + A’ on your keyboard. this will select all of your frames IN THEIR LAYERS (not the ones on the timeline)
as you can see, they’re all highlighted on the bottom right panel.
step 2: place all of them in a folder by clicking this one!
step 3: then, convert your frame animation into a timeline by clicking the tiny icon beside the ‘forever’ loop.
it should look like this afterwards:
step 4: now we finally convert to smart filters by clicking filters, then convert to smart filter
which turns like this after being converted
step 5: now sharpen to your liking! go to filters, sharpen, then smart sharpen. these are the settings i use, but i usually just play around with them until i like what i see. i won’t go in depth about this because i’m not exactly sure what happens either, lol. the most important part is the amount and radius though!
again, you can stop here, but i like adding a bit of glow to my gifs. it’s done by adding gaussian blur (another filter)! i learnt this method from this tutorial. i don’t think i can add any more to it as it’s perfect, so i won’t be elaborating anymore!
additionally, if you don’t want to do all of that manually (although i suggest you learn how to do it manually first), there are available sharpening actions you can see around the internet. just choose one that’s to your liking! here are a few of them.
my personal favorite! this is what makes the giffing process so rewarding for me. for coloring, adjustment layers are your best friends! you can try messing around with all of these.
i usually use selective color (my beloved <3) levels, curves, saturation, exposure, vibrance, color balance, photo filter, channel mixer, and gradient maps (not specifically in that order). i won’t actually do a specific tutorial as coloring extremely varies from each gif (one psd/coloring might work for another but may look absolutely horrifying on one lol, this applies even to frames that are from the same video!!) but i’m just going to give a few tips and refer to a few tutorials that might help you out!
generally, the more colors there are in your gif, the bigger the gif size will be. this is also important when you are exporting! (gifs that have very few frames with a lot of color and gifs that have up to 200 frames but has very few colors in them can actually save as the same size)
if you wanna lessen the file size and noise, gamma and off-set are your best friends! (make the gifs a bit darker)
i used to be unaware of this when i was a new gifmaker, but be careful of whitewashing! dreamy (@scoupsy) has an excellent tutorial that combats this. annie (@imjaebumaf) also touches a bit more on this!
resources are always available for you to learn! one good way of learning how to color is by seeing how others also do it, and that is through their psds. i really love izzie’s (@coupsnim) colorings, and she recently put out a set for her blog’s anniversary too, so you can check that out! <3 i’ve also seen a lot of psds here from tumblr resource blogs, and deviantart has really good ones as well.
i don’t really have things i keep in mind other than those. just have fun and i’m sure it’ll turn out good!
to me, last but not the least, we address the speed of the gif before we export! it’s the one with decimal places on the timeline. make sure that you select all frames if you want a consistent speed! you can always play around with it though.
for 30fps gifs, i usually do 0.03-0.035. photoshop shows 0.035 as 0.04, but i’m pretty sure it isn’t the exact same speed as 0.04. as for 60fps gifs, my speed ranges from 0.01-0.025.
and finally, we go to the settings themselves! i used to take exporting settings very lightly, but lately i have realized that it also impacts the way your gifs look so much! to export, press ‘CTRL + SHIFT + ALT + S’ on your keyboard, or simply go to file, export, then save for web.
there are so many ways you can play around with it, but here are my current settings.
the color reduction algorithm (i.e: adaptive, selective, etc.) is one of the most important things as this determines the quality of your exported gif! it really differs for each gif, but lately i lean towards the adaptive setting as i like the way it has been making my gifs look.
also very important to remember that tumblr’s current gif size limit is 10MB so make sure to keep your gifs under that size!!
you can also remove a few frames/skip every nth frame to lessen size if you’re running over the limit. :)
to show you how different each process will make a gif look, i’m including some examples (actually the ones we were working on during the tutorial) to demonstrate a bit better.
this is specifically for an mv, but this tutorial has been really long now jdkjkfdjkfd so i will link down resources that show examples of it w/ performance stages (you can see a much bigger difference here)! also note that the vs one has slightly lesser frames (they could have the same frame number but i didn’t wanna redo it lol ; ;) the .035 indicated is the speed used.
i know this is a bit much for an intro, but i wanted this to be a one-stop guide so you won't have to scramble for more resources. however, if some parts are hard to understand, here are a few tutorials that might help! (1, 2, 3 by @jinims, 4 by @soonhoonsol, 5)
and a few more resources that helped me out when i was beginning
sparkle tutorial
sparkle action
blurring captions
i hope this was helpful, and i can’t wait to see your gifs! <3

This post is a continuation to my gif-making tutorial. I’ve found that I often work with weirdly tinted scenes which are sometimes challenging to colour, so I’m here to share how I tend to work around them.
There is no one way to colour gifs, and something that works for me may not work for you! This post just contains some things I wish I’d known when I started making gifs years ago.
To understand this, you need to:
already know how to make gifs on Photoshop
have basic knowledge of different adjustment layers
i’ve seen some cc’s put out various tutorials so i thought i would do one on a technique i use to remove logos from stage gifs. this is to avoid having to blur logos, crop weirdly, or, most tediously, paint over the logo frame-by-frame.
the process of making sparkly gifs is too long so i decided to make it easier! just download this action and it will do everything for you :*
the sparkly effect is based on a tutorial by @jiminfilter which you can find here! all i did was follow it and make it into an action for easier use.
before using it you need to have an already sharpened gif converted into a smart object! just run it on that and you will end up with a beautiful sparkly gif.
have fun with it and reblog if you like it! :)
(it might not work on older photoshop versions. please don’t ask me why it’s not working for you, i don’t know)
Tired of using those giant ass svg codes when you want a small icon to appear? Meet the icomoon app! It allows you to choose icons from a variety of collections or upload your own if you’d like. And here’s the best part of it: IT’S FREE!

On the linked page you will find a list of tumblr blocks and variables that are undocumented. Most were found in the new Optica default theme. You can find the official tumblr documentation here.
It is by no means comprehensive and is only from my personal experimentation. I take no responsibility for anything.
Most excitingly, it contains the needed blocks and variables for dashboard-style captions.
All that being said, it has taken me quite a few hours to put together. If you would like to donate to my paypal as a show of appreciation, it would be greatly appreciated. You can find my paypal here.
hiii loves! I'm making another tutorial for this shape gif or gif shape edit you see up there! (lol I don't know what you call this) I've seen quite a few edits like this and it's a fun effect to achieve and really easy!
I use photoshop to edit my gifs and mplayer to get my clips btw.
TUTORIAL UNDER THE CUT:
1. ADDING THE SHAPE
2. CREATING A CLIPPING MASK
3. EXTRAS
So you'll need two gifs for this tutorial one that will be your main background and the second that will go into your shape.
Tip: Open them in separate psds so they are easy to edit. And find a color theme you'd like to incorporate in your edit I went with blue and pink
1. ADDING THE SHAPE
For the shape you can simply look up the shape you'd like on google. For the best possible results look up your shapes clipart. For example I looked up "diamond shape clipart" and found exactly what I was looking for.
If you want to use a circle or square you can make them right in photoshop with the shapes tool.
This is my shape which I'll be changing the color of later. Since my shape has a background I have to get rid of that first.
Open the jpeg of the shape in photoshop
Then using the quick selection tool
select your shape
it should have the marching ants around it like this ^
next copy the shape directly from the layer with command 'c' (for mac) or control 'c' (for pc)
now go to your main background gif and paste it there with command 'v' or control 'v'
It should look like this now! From here you can center it or transform it the way you'd like.
2. CREATING A CLIPPING MASK
For this portion you need your second gif. All you need to do is copy the whole gif thats in the other psd into your main background psd including the adjustments you made to it.
you want to copy all those layers and place them above your shape in your layers window like this^
before adding your clipping mask it should look something like this
a little wonky but the clipping mask will fix all of this!
now select all of your second gif layers including the adjustments. just press shift and click on all the layers that you need.
then hover your cursor over those layers, right click on your mouse or trackpad and select the option that says "create clipping mask"
after selecting that your gif should look like this
at this point you've completed the main portion of your edit! But let's make it prettier!
3. EXTRAS
You can add an extra shape to the background of your main shape to make it stand out. Simply duplicate your main shape or copy it again from its main psd
And using the paint bucket tool fill it in with any color you'd like. I put a gradient overlay adjustment on mine to make it pink and blue. Then add some text or leave as is.
Here is my final edit!
hopefully this helps ya'll out if you have any questions about this tutorial don't hesitate to send me an ask! Have fun!
idk how many of you are using this already but hopefully it will help someone out when saving gifs. but basically in this tutorial kinda thing i’ll try to explain how to play around with your colour palette to have your choice of 256 colours bc PS can be a b*tch.
sometimes when i save a gif none of the settings look as good as a want them and gifs end up looking a bit more whitewashed or just plain grainy. so here’s what i do as a last resort after changing the coloring 81516 times, making the blacks darker, getting rid of colours or making to colours a bit more homogeneous (i.e.: shifting megantas to red, shifting cyans/greens to blue etc etc)
01. have your gif ready... safe for web all them usual stuff
02. have the 2-Up tab active in case you don’t already
03. sort your colour palette by popularity
we only need this step to know which colours we can get rid of
04. get rid of the last 1-2 rows
this really depends on how grainy your gif looks before this. i usually just start with one row and if it’s still bad i get rid of another. but select (with ctrl/cmd or shift) the colours you don’t need (since we are sorting by popularity removing these won’t be that big deal) and just click on the bin icon.
05. add your colours
now since this part of photoshop is extremely user friendly and highly intuitive we are going to do the following. click on the color picker and from your original gif click on a colour you want in your optimized gif (i usually do this with 1600% zoom so i actually see what i’m clicking on)
now at this point all the settings will disappear because the original window is selected, so we need to go back to our hand icon and with it select our optimized gif (here the bottom one, duh)
and now once we are back we can click on that paper icon that’s supposed to be an add icon according to some designer at adobe apparently
once you are done, the colours you added will have a square in the corner meaning they are locked, so even if you change perceptive/selective/adaptive your colours will remain, so you can also play around with those if you feel like it. if none of them vibe with you, you can get back to your palette by clicking on custom.
if for some reason you don’t want your colours anymore, you can unlock them, by clicking on this in the option menu.
06. save as usual business
also don’t forget to marvel at your creation that basically got like around 1.4% better, but as a CC your soul will feel extremely calm, even tho nobody else will be able to tell. but you’ll know, deep down you’ll know that it was way worse before all this. but we still only have 256 colours so like.... don’t get your hopes up that much ahsgdfasd
okay this is it, as i said I hope this helps somebody out there, and if you have questions or anything my askbox is always open 💕

ts files & resources for content creators!!
including: kdramas, music shows, variety shows.
hello friends. since kpopexciting has been removed as of today (200925) & i’ve seen people upset and freaked out about not being able to gif using ts files anymore, i thought i’d put together a list of uploaders on twitter. i’ll specify who and what they upload for and i’m also going to include some more information & resources in this post so please make sure that you read it all, and please reblog it to spread the word! note: i won’t be linking these as otherwise tumblr will hide the post from the tags, but one quick google search should bring them all up!
note: i spent half a day compiling this list and going through every single one of the groups on the lists on kprofiles; these are the only accounts i was personally able to find, but i tried my best and i’m sorry in advance if your favourite group isn’t on here!
before you continue, some advice on other things you should make use of:
avast antivirus – it’ll automatically blacklist urls that may harm your pc.
universal bypass – it bypasses adfly and other ad links that wanna infect your pc with viruses. it’ll take you straight to the download link.
yourfonts – fonts for your creator needs. if the links don’t lead anywhere, just google the font & it’ll come up on a font download website.
soshistagram – downloads vlives.
4kdownloader – downloads youtube vids up to 4k quality.
utorrent – torrent downloader. can use web version.
smart cutter – used to cut full episodes of a show.
gdbypass[.]host – bypasses the download limit on google drive files.
this list will, to my knowledge, contain no reposted or reuploaded (read: stolen) files from kpop24hrs. if you should find out that an uploader is in fact stealing, please let me know so i can remove them from the list.
what are ts files, why are they used, and why should they not be reposted?
very high quality files that are raw recordings from korean tv. they take a long time to record and upload, especially when it is a full-episode recording which can amount to up to 10gb in file size. recorders & uploaders also tend to cut the episodes and upload not only the full episodes, but all cuts from said episode. it’s no wonder then that they would rather their hard work not be taken and reuploaded! the most popular reuploaders of ts files are kpopexciting and 4sashi. if you should obtain a link to a ts file, please do not repost or reupload it. uploaders have strict rules against this and have stopped uploading in the past because people have breached their trust. when an uploader stops posting ts files, it affects content creators (gif makers and video editors in particular). don’t be an asshole and, if possible, don’t support reposters.
what is kpop24hrs?
the most commonly-used website for downloading ts files. it stores weekly idol episodes, music videos, music shows, variety shows (yhys, asc, etc), dvd cuts. you must be a member to access it, but they do not freely accept members and don’t have a schedule of when their acceptances are open. this is presumably so they can keep an eye on members and easily be able to determine who is not following the site rules. they also upload for all artists, as well as take requests. so it is a very good site to use if you are a nugu stan.
what if i can’t access kpop24hrs and download the ts file i want?
this is what this list is for! also, should you want a particular file, feel free to message me off anon and i’ll do my best to get you the link.
