personally, i think yuan wuhuo is one of the most (if not The Most) complex and well-developed characters we got in vos.
first, you got a man who would do anything to protect his family, going so far as to forcing his brother into smth he didn't want and was afraid of, bc it was better to have xizai alive and hating him than having him dead. then you have a man who lost said brother and latched onto the slightest hope of getting xizai back, showing how cold he can be in his treatment/actions so long as it meant there was a hope. you have a man who knew the little fox was not his brother but who still chose to care for him. and sure, this could be chalked up to the fox taking on a form of xizai but i think at one point he accepted that xizai and the little fox were not the same, that there were too many differences between them for him to keep on deluding himself. but he didn't leave, he didn't abandon that fox. he kept him safe and stayed at his side, and was one of the few people who truly understood what the little fox felt. he blamed himself for the pain the little fox went through, blamed himself for locking said fox in the dragon deity's prison. his only wish was to keep his loved ones safe, yet in the end he knew that it was him who ensured that their safety would never be certain. forcing xizai to swallow the dragon marrow put him on a path which lead to his death bc of the explosion. capturing the little fox put him on the path of becoming the dragon deity's vessel, and while you could argue that the little fox was safe in the shilin sect, he is also the one jiu ying sees as his primary target.
and then you get to yuan wuhuo obsessions. i will actually make a seperate post on this bc it will contain a lot more headcanons than actual facts/characterization, but my point stands.
lately i've been having so many ABO vos ideas, they're just bursting out of me. i feel like this will be a long post so i'm gonna put it under the cut.
ft. omega ji ling, alpha yuan wuhuo, and alpha li jie
little fox in heat [ji ling (long shen)/yuan wuhuo]
not really a 'true' abo idea but i've been thinking how the little fox which was captured by ywh was an animal, right? and heat is smth normally occurring in the animal world. we also don't really know what gender the little fox was, we only know that he took the form of xizai, a human boy. what if the little fox was not male but female? what if back when yuan wuhuo caught him he was too young to have heats but at some point his body matured? so one day ywh wakes up to the little fox looking like he's sick, body feverish and in pain, hands blindly reaching for something. i'm debating on whether the little fox would know what's happening to him bc technically it's animal nature but we know he was always alone, so maybe he didn't get to learn about it. but ywh would know, humans knows about animal habits. so really, what else can ywh do but help out?
dragon scale changes [ji ling (long shen)/li jie]
this idea is based on the fact that the dragon scale has made many, many changes to the little fox's body after it was swallowed, which i suppose is true. the one i'd focus on here is how it affected his heat cycles. what if, bc the scale gave ji ling immortality, it made it so his heats are extremely rare? and i do mean extremely. like once a century or smth. this one would probably be placed a bit pre-canon, after li jie already made his way to the commander position. imagine one day, out of nowhere long shen realizes he's in heat, and he panics bc he hasn't has one since before he swallowed the scale, he thought that bc of the scale he no longer had them. he's the dragon deity, the deity doesn't have heats. the dragon deity doesn't have a sub gender. he can't let anyone know bc it would out him out as a fake (but bazi ze probs knows), it would render away all the year of entrapment he went through worthless. but at the point he's in there's no way he can suppress it, all he can do is to suffer through it on his own.
except! li jie who has been away on a mission returns to the sect, and instantly his nose catches a faint scent lingering around. a scent so enticing and sweet it makes his alpha scream to follow it, to find the source and mate whichever omega it belongs to. he fights the urge for now. he has to report to the dragon deity, he has his duties. yet when he goes to the scale cave it's not long shen daren who waits for him, it's bai ze. bai ze tells him the dragon deity is temporarily indisposed which instantly sets li jie on edge. did smth happen? was the dragon deity hurt? li jie has been gone for only a couple days, did he fail in protecting his lord? he races to his lords rooms. his worry clouds his senses, and he doesn't notice how the scent in the air grows thicker with each step until he stands at long shen's room's doors. that's when his mind starts screaming. there's an omega in distress very near him, in pain. in heat. their scent is the most mouth-watering smell li jie has ever sensed. he doesn't knock, his instincts making him walk through the door before he can think better of it.
bonds lost and gained [ji ing (long shen)/yuan wuhuo, ji ling (long shen)/li jie, ji ling (puppet)/li jie, maybe ji ling (puppet)/yuan wuhuo?]
this idea is the newest one but, ngl, it's probably the one i'm most excited about. built up on the previous one. a canon rewrite on some things.
here i want ywh and the little fox to be mated before the dragon scale is swallowed. their bond was not an easy one bc of ywh wasting sickness, and he probably strongly opposed it, but in the end he agreed. and so the little fox has watched for years as his mate grew old and fragile, and then lost him, only to years later be visited by an alpha that looks exactly like his mate, who is almost his mate. his scent is changed, but so did ji ling's after the scale, his memories are gone but he remembers ji ling's voice, the fact that he had a mate. and yet li jie's body doesn't have the mating bite the little fox left on yuan wuhuo, his appearance doesn't make long shen's body respond to him the way it should. long shen's heats stopped when ywh died (what he assumed must have been his death. he can't know for sure, he never saw his mate die,) so wouldn't li jie showing up trigger a heat in him? if li jie was his mate. yet even if li jie isn't ywh he's the closest thing to his alpha long shen can get. he doesn't question it further, he lets himself believe. he lets himself be wrong.
he doesn't tell li jie, he doesn't act towards li jie any different than he does with the other members of the sect. he can't allow himself that. the dragon deity isn't supposed to have a mate, the dragon deity is both an alpha and an omega, they are above subgenders. they are complete on their own. it's a good thing li jie's appearance didn't have an effect on him. it's better that way. except a year or two later he does go into heat. long shen craves his alpha, he needs his scent and touch, his proximity. li jie is not his alpha, he can't be. but he is the closest to it, he's almost it. unknown to him, as his heat appears, something in li jie changes, smth which was dormant within him flares to life, and he follows the tug of it to long shen's doors. li jie's touch is different than what long shen remembers ywh's was like, his voice not quite low enough, his eyes too timid. yet his scent is familiar enough, the bond accepting him as his mate. it's not until his heat has passed that long shen realizes smth is different with the bond. there's a second tether leading towards the unknown.
in this au i want ji ling to be aware he's a puppet. i know it's a huge hole in the air-tight secrecy of the 'fake dragon deity' plan but i will work on the details later. bc adding the puppet, which is not technically an 'alive' omega yet mirrors long shen's existence in every aspect, into the mix is a very fun thing. i imagine ji ling carries the little fox's original scent, and maybe he doesn't have heats on his own but imagine li jie would still respond to him. bc ji ling is the purest form of long shen and the little fox he once was, he carries what human ywh was mated to before all of the changes, and if we want to go with 'the butterfly demon devouring ywh and spitting out li jie was ywh's rebirth' it would be logical to assume li jie would be drawn to him. also, this is what i want so whatevs. my playground, my toys.

i think we as fandom culture in general lost something very important when we stopped writing songfics. i really liked them. i liked knowing what music ppl listen to, liked finding out new songs just by reading about my fave ships. liked reading about what thoughts a particular song sparked in others

there are many things i am confused about when it comes to veil of shadows even after having watched it, but what i think I'm most confused about is li jie and yuan wuhuo's race. hear me out on this.
yuan wuhuo was human before he was consumed by the butterfly who was a yao. the butterfly demon was two beings not one, therefore we got li jie and new yuan wuhuo. if i remember correctly the whole deal about the butterfly demon was that after they consumed yuan wuhuo's consciousness/memories they are fully reborn, bc that's part of their ability, but when yuan wuhuo dies at the shilin sect his body doesn't dissolve like the other yao's does. in later episodes li jie also says that he cannot wait for ji ling's heart stone to recultivate bc he will not live that long, but both he and yuan wuhuo were the new forms of the butterfly demon. who was a yao. which means they too are yao right?
but then when li jie first arrived at the shilin sect he had no token to keep him safe from all the traps, and one would assume long shen would be able to tell whether he was human or not, or at least bai ze would tell him. but if both li jie and yuan wuhuo were human how come yuan wuhuo had the butterfly demon's powers? did only one of them become a yao while the other stayed human? what happened to the other butterfly demon then? where did he go?
