âOh you know, they donât like listening to the same thing over and over. They get bored,â Nikki explained flippantly as she went about flipping on lights and ensuring her equipment was still functioning. Nothing seemed to have gone amiss in her short absence, but sheâd learned the value of prudence after blowing a few breakers when one of the mechanical hoists overheated its engine.
âUm⌠can you jump up on that work bench there?â she asked. âIâd like to get closer look. If not, I, uh⌠How does your hovering work? Magnets? We can boost that⌠Maybe withâŚâ She trailed off, the Omnicâs words finally settling in her brain.
âYou feel pain!?â Pain. Robots that felt pain. That was actually a new one for her little shop. âIs there a way to use anaesthesia? Because me trying to fix a joint is going to fuc- really really hurt!â
Here was where the anxiety came into play. And the lengthy explanations brought forth by said anxiety.
âYes ⌠I feel pain. I feel most of what you can feel on your skin and muscles. Give me a piece of silk, the microsensors will deliver simulations of its soft nature. Punch me in the arm, it will hurt. It is built just under the surface of the metal I am made of. Mostly steel and aluminum alloy. Bullet proof material that is ⌠Rather old. The reason we can feel such things is similar to why a human feels pain. It tells us when something is wrong.â
He felt like he was stammering on and on as his hands met the ledge of the workbench, easily hoisting himself upon its surface with his right leg now dangling from its surface, his left remaining in its crumpled position on its side.
âAnd ⌠The only way for me to get through it is to grin and bear it, as they say, or shut down. My design is fairly dated, I do apologize for the complications. I ⌠Hate to admit that I have not had a tune up in ⌠Five years or so. Let alone any repairs, due to my ⌠Problems with trust ⌠It does not allow me to shut down properly. There will be a forced booting sequence  the moment I do. Nevertheless, I am used to breaking the leg and straightening it when I have needed to walk upon the Earth, it is nothing I cannot handle. But thank you, for caring.â
Nikki chewed her lip as the Omnic spoke. He felt pain, and in her experience, pain was to be avoided at all costs. And this robotâ person, she corrected herself. He was clearly embarrassed and uncomfortable with all of this, and that meant he was far more than a simple mindless machine. And even though he was uneasy, he was still telling her it was more than alright for her to hurt him, that he was used to the necessity of it...
That wouldn't do. That wouldn't do at all. She wanted to help him, but first she needed to find a way to numb his leg.
"What if I shocked it?" she asked hesitantly. "Your leg, I mean? It might knock out the, ah, receptors long enough for me to fix your leg."

What do you think my Muse should dress up as for Halloween?
((Iâm sorry for the lack of activity recently. I am very tired.))
"I thought I could handle my emotions, control them, contain them, prove them all wrong, but I was just too weak." @angelicpacifist
Nikki looked up from the laptop she had and disassembled in front of her. The poor thing looked as though itâd been flung into a wall, and judging from her customerâs statement, that was a possible diagnosis. Ah well, at least it wasnât a person.
âNo worries,â she said brightly. âItâs fixable. Wonât be pretty, but itâll function. Rough day, I take it?â
Angelaâs smile lingered, the edges of her eyes crinkling as her expression softened. âIt is most certainly a miracle to save, and improve that over-glorified frisbee.â She gestured at her computer before pulling herself to her feet to start pacing again.
Her pacing paused when her gaze fell on the beetle. âThat is quite the little helper.â
Glorified frisbee? Nikki almost snorted aloud at that. Sheâd heard customers call their various broken tech all sorts of names, but frisbee was a rarity. Granted, it was an older model, but it could still work! It had use!
âWhat?â she paused, momentarily confused. âOh! This is Fritz-Herbert. Say hi, Fritz.â The beetle dutifully clicked at the woman. âHeâs one of my first creations. Heâs good at collecting screws that fall behind the table.â

As the Omnic explained, Nikki took a more careful examination. He (they? She? What pronouns were considered polite for Omnics? Was it even polite to ask??) was covered in a fine layer of rust in areas. He (just stick with it, Nikki) looked to be an older model. Worn. And nervous enough that even someone as socially dense as her could pick it up. She smiled at him as gently as she could manage. Poor thing, he was probably expecting her to turn him away.
âCome on in,â she replied. âHydraulics are a walk in the park. This used to be an autoshop, and I still work on the occasional vehicle, so Iâve got the stuff to build you a new one. No worries!â She grinned and turned to unlockand open the doorâ
â And was immediately beset by a myriad of beeps and whirrs as a handful of the shopâs more personable inhabitants swarmed her. A mechanical beetle settled on her shoulder, clicking impatiantly as another more rectancular robot (which she affectionately called Boxy) rammed into her chair with insistant beeps of its own. More machines greeted her around the shop.
âGuys, guys no. We have a gue⌠Okay, glad to see you too, butâŚâ She huffed and tried to bend down to move Boxy out of her way. There was only one way to solve this. She drew in a breath, sat up straight and barked out, âCalm the fuck down or we are listening to nothing but Palestrina for the next week!â
Silence fell on the shop. The threat worked, and finally she was allowed into the door. Flushing, she cast an apolegetic glance at the Omnic.
âSorry about that. They worry when Iâm out,âshe explained, lifting the drill press from her lap and placing it on the counter. "Or at least it seems like it. Now about that leg of yours?â
Her gentle smile gave some reassurance, though his CPU skyrocketing caused a rise and fall of his chest, much like that of a deep breath. A vent of the heat building in his system, before it could do any damage.
He peered cautiously inside as she entered, head tilting at the barrage of beeps that greeted her entrance. However, as she shouted, a hand lifted to cover a portion of his facial plating as he bit back childish laughter. He couldnât help a quiet chuckle at the threat, more fascinated with the fact that it had worked.
He was cautious, hovering closely to the door as to not impede on her personal space, yet his gaze drifted over the many mechanical droids with an enamored curiosity.
âThey most certainly do.â He replied, an amused tone taking hold of his voice. âThey adore you, however, it strikes my curiosity that the threat of listening to something is what caused them to ease.â
His gaze finally returned to her, yet he still remained in place by the door.
âAh, yes. My left leg, for several ⌠Months ⌠I would have to say ⌠Has been broken. The hydraulics no longer work, thus I cannot walk upon the Earth. It is a blessing I can hover, but the only way I can walk is if I force it into a straightened position, of which it cannot bend. It has caused immeasurable pain as of lately, as the weather gets colder, the more it aches.â

âNo worries,â she said brightly. âItâs fixable. Wonât be pretty, but itâll function. Rough day, I take it?â
She glanced at the battered machine. A series emotions flickered across her face before she looked away again. âYou could say that. It has been a long week.â âA long lifeâŚâ Angela grimaced and folded her arms across her chest. âHow long until it is finished?â
Glancing up, Nikki frowned at the cocktail ofâŚ. something in blonde womanâs expression. Nothing was concrete enough for her to grasp it, though she supposed the fault probably sat squarely on her shoulders. People were hard to understand. All she knew was the lady was upset, and that it probably wasnât her business to ask. Best to stick with her machines. It was safer.
Still⌠She studied the parts on her table. The casing was toast, and thereâd be a need for a new screen, but overall? It was⌠mostly intact. Nikki could fix it at the very least. In factâŚ.
âA few hours?â she hazarded. âI need to replace both the shell and the screen, but I actually think I can having it running better than before if you like.â
She stared down at her hands, furious at herself for letting her anger get the better of her. This was not who she wanted to be. Without the checks and balances provided by her old team, the slow spiral of a lonely first responder was finally beginning to take its toll. The laptop was simply the first victim she couldnât take care of herself.
Angela looked back at her again, her eyebrows raised. âReally?â A smile slowly, apprehensively, spread across her face. âThat is fast. Are you always a miracle worker?â She shook her head.
"Miracle?" Nikki snorted a laugh, waving her hand as if she could push away the comment and the blush it created. A miracle worker? Her? Highly unlikely. "I'm just doing my job!"
She gave an embarrassed grin, fumbling around on her work table for a misplaced screwdriver and noting that smiles suited her customer more than the worried scowl she'd worn earlier. Oddly enough, the woman looked familiar... Where had she seen that face before?
A little click sounded at her side and the screwdriver rolled into her hand, breaking her train of thought and pushed by a helpful metal beetle. "Thanks, Fritz," she told the little thing, taking up the screwdriver and setting to work.
