Thoth was also a god of writing, science, magic and judgement. He would become associated with settling disputes among gods and even judging the dead, which does fall in line with how game Hermes decided to test the logic of the ancient world.

Coming back to Hermes Trismegistus, he was known as the creator of alchemy and other occult arts, hence the term "hermetic arts." Many alchemical, astrological and philosophical writings were attributed to Hermes Trismegistus, who ended up being seen as less of a god and more of a enlightened mortal who possessed prophetic powers. These writings would be grouped into a school of thought called Hermeticism. One of its core ideas was "prisca theologia" - one truth that was imparted to humanity but interpreted into different religions and philosophies as ages passed.
