The split takes place roughly two or three years ago, somewhere very far from Sanctuary. Before the original Song died, even.
In one half of the timeline, a small group of refugees flees their old home in the hopes they can try and start a new life. They hear about the Core SMP. Sanctuary. A place where they don’t have to be afraid. They’re wrong about that last bit, obviously, but nonetheless they show up.
On the other end of the Schism, they stay, and they fight, and they suffer. They lose everything they’d hoped to stay and protect.
We exist on the former half of the timeline. The fraction that can still be saved. But to protect all of the Core SMP, the timeline itself, a sacrifice has to be made.
Prevent the Schism, doom the refugees. Kill the source, heal the damage.
