Episode 1

[English version]

Nadia and Mikel welcomed their first daughter, Branca. She was a sweet, cheerful, and kind little girl who completed the family they had always dreamed of. Their home was filled with love, companionship, laughter, and happiness, as if nothing could ever disturb the peace they shared.

Until, little by little, everything began to change.

Nadia started feeling constantly exhausted. Then came the cough, followed by a weakness that only seemed to grow worse. She believed it was nothing more than the cold winter weather and carried on with her daily routine, but as the days passed, her condition continued to deteriorate. By the time she finally sought medical help, it was already too late.

Branca lost her mother while she was still just a baby, far too young to understand the pain of such a devastating loss. She had no idea that this would only be the beginning of a life marked by hardship and sorrow.

Finally, Gunther was free from work and arrived at the hospital after running almost all his way there.

Rin was back into her room when she heard his hurried footsteps and saw Gunther entering while trying to catch his breath.

Rin: Gunther, what took you so long? I was getting desperate here!

Gunther: I know, I can imagine. I'm so sorry, I had meeting after meeting and I left my phone in my bag.

Rin: I was so afraid you wouldn't be here to see our son being born...

Gunther: I should have stayed with my phone in my pocket. I'm so sorry, Rin. But I'm here now, I won't leave your side.

Rin finally smiled as he gently touched her face. His words and his presence there were finally calming her.

At last, Rin was fully dilated and was taken to the birth room.

Doctor: Come on, Rin, I need you to push.

Rin: I... I don't think I can. It hurts too much!

Gunther: You can do it, Rin, you're almost there, babe.

Rin: Uuughh! Gunther, you're not the one feeling this, so shut up, please!!

Gunther decided to stay quiet so he wouldn't upset her even more. And in a few more minutes, they could hear the cries of their baby filling the room.

The doctor placed him in Rin's arms and the little one stopped crying right away, as if he immediately recognized his mom.

Gunther: He really is, Rin. Our son is here. You did great, babe.

After some time, Gunther left to give his family the good news.

Gunther: The baby was born. Both him and Rin are fine.

Mila ran and hugged her son, all emotional. Gunther hugged her back, with a big smile on his face, but his attention soon turned to Wolfgang.

Gunther: Wolf, if you weren't there with her and if you hadn't acted so quickly, I don't know what would have happened. They're fine now because of you, brother. So... thank you.

Wolfgang: ... No problem.

Wolfgang didn't even know how to react to those words. He couldn't remember the last time Gunther praised him or thanked him for anything.

Ever since Rin came into their lives, everything started to change. And now Wolf was realizing those changes weren't so bad.

Rin: Oh, I know. I just wanted to enjoy your music. But I can leave if it bothers you.

Wolfgang: Tsk. Whatever. Just stay, I guess.

Rin smiled. For her that meant the boy wasn't as mad at her as she had imagined.

Rin was a little tired because of her pregnancy, so she decided to lie down on the couch while she listened to him play.

Rin: You play really well, Wolfgang. Have you thought about performing somewhere?

He hesitated for a while before finally giving her an answer.

Wolfgang: Me and my friends we practice a lot but... maybe Gunther is right. Maybe this is just a hobby and we won't get that far in the end.

Rin: Reading books and writing stories used to be just a hobby for me too. Nowadays I can't see myself working with anything other than that. If you love music this much, you should try. I believe you can definitely go far, Wolfgang, and this is not just lip service.

The boy went silent once more, but he couldn't hide the small smile that formed on his face. That was the second time Rin supported him and his dream like that. Even though he was so mean to her, she was always so kind.

The doctor advised her to exercise on the yoga ball. Even with all the contractions, she was still not fully dilated, so that could help.

The days passed by and the family created some sort of routine. Every time Gunther had to go out for work, someone would come to stay with Rin. Sometimes it'd be Mila.

Mila's presence didn't bother her at all. She'd be quietly doing her things nearby, and Rin would focus on her writing.

And of course, Mila would always prepare delicious and healthy meals for Rin and the baby.

Rin felt closer and closer to her future mother-in-law. Mila was a good mother and Rin felt like she wanted to take care of her like she was her own child. Rin thought that was very sweet of her.

And whenever it wasn't Mila, Naomi was the one who'd come to keep Rin company.

The two would watch their favorite series together. And talk for hours and hours! Rin loved having her best friend living so close to her again.

Naomi would give her all the support she needed whenever Rin was feeling sick or emotional because of the pregnancy. Her best friend knew just what she needed like no other.

On a rainy afternoon in Windenburg, Mila came knocking on Rin's door but she wasn't alone this time. Wolfgang was standing there with his arms crossed beside his mother. Rin was a little confused on why the teenager was there.

Mila: Dear, I'm so sorry, I have to stop by at my job to solve some issues. So I brought Wolf to stay with you in case something happens.

Rin: Oh... I can stay here by myself, Mila. We don't need to bother Wolfgang with that. The baby is not coming for like a week or so.

Mila: It won't be a bother, dear, he even agreed to it. Right, Wolf?

Wolfgang: Tsk. I brought my guitar. If I can just practice while I'm here, I don't really care.

Rin: Of course you can, Wolfgang. Make yourself at home.

After all was done, both of them came out of the closet laughing and pretty satisfied, even though Gunther was a bit sore.

Gunther: Next time give me a heads up and I won't leave the closet so full of stuff.

Rin: Sure, I'm sorry, I couldn't help it.

Gunther: Oh, please, don't be sorry, it was still really fun.

He gave her a nice tour of the house and Rin loved everything she saw. The house was very Windenburg, it even looked a little like Gunther's house, probably because Mila helped decorating, but that didn't bother her at all. It was a cozy place and Rin was happy they were at their home finally.

Her favorite place in the house was definitely the baby's bedroom. She loved every little detail in it. She could barely wait to see her little baby sleeping peacefully in that crib or playing with many toys scattered in the ground.

After the house tour, they decided to relax in their own bedroom and Rin read one of her children's books to her baby. Gunther smiled focusing on her soft voice telling that story. And Rin felt like she was bonding even more with the baby at that moment.

Now that Wolfgang was gone, the boy could start trying to get back on his feet.

Rin: Here, let me help you.

She offered him her hand and he hesitated for some long seconds, just staring at it.

He finally accepted it. His voice still very shy and whispered.

Rin: My name's Rin, I hope you're not hurt...?

By the intonation she used at the end of her sentence, he could tell she wanted to know his name.

???: J-Jeb. A..And I'm fine...

The boy was feeling so nervous. His heart was beating really fast at that moment, in a way it never did before.

Rin: Good! Listen, Jeb, I'm sorry about Wolfgang. He's probably just grumpy because he forgot his lunch. But I know he's a good kid deep inside.

Later that day, at night, Gunther and Rin were in the bedroom, getting ready to sleep.

Gunther: So how was your day, Rin?

Rin: Well... I got your brother angry again... I think this time he officially hates me.

Gunther laughed as he pulled her to lie down with him. She didn't even have to say Wolf's name for him to know who she was talking about.

Gunther: Imagine how it was for me to grow up with him as my brother! Hahaha

As soon as she got home, Rin went straight to Gunther's bedroom, pulled out her laptop, and began working on a book she had started recently. She felt so inspired those days that she managed to finally get to its ending.

She was so proud of herself!

Later, she decided to look for her future mother-in-law and offer to help her with anything. She found Mila in the kitchen looking a little distressed.

Rin: What happened, Mila?

Mila: Oh, sweetie, Wolfgang forgot his lunch. Now I have take it to him and I have so much to do in the house...

Rin thought for a while. She was free at the moment, so she could go instead of Mila. And maybe she could get on Wolfgang's good side with this gesture.

Rin: I can get him his lunch for you, Mila. I really wanted to check on the schools here in Windenburg anyway.

It was lunch time and Wolfgang was all alone outside. He had forgotten his lunch, so one of his mates said they'd get food from the cantine and would bring him something too, he was waiting now.

She called out for him, but he just ignored her. He seemed very irritated and just wanted to walk away.

When they got to the garden, they saw Naomi, Rin's best friend who had also come to visit.

The two hugged tight. Naomi was really happy that now her friend would be living in Windenburg and so they could see each other a lot more often.

And later, she gave her father one last hug for a long time.

Rin went to the bathroom and took a nice shower to relax. She was finishing brushing her teeth when Gunther came from behind.

Rin: Well... fine, Gunther. Let's try being together. I'm actually happy you wanna be part of this with me.

Gunther: Of course, Rin! Thanks for giving me the opportunity to.

Rin: It's funny, I thought it'd be just me and my books forever. And now I'm having a baby... and a husband!

Gunther: I used to think the same about myself. I think our little slip-up was also our biggest luck.

Rin: Yeah, so did I... but maybe you'll regret it just a little after what I have to say.

Gunther: Nonsense, Rin! Nothing you'd tell me could make me regret spending that night with you. I couldn't stop thinking about it.

And some days later, Rin was back to Windenburg. After leaving his things at Naomi's place, she went to Gunther's house to talk to him.

She was greeted by a little blonde boy with a big smile that insisted for her to come in.

Rin: H-Hi, Lucas... My name is Rin. Wait, girlfriend?!

Rin had returned to Mt. Komorebi and her fell back into the usual routine, exactly how she expected.

The days soon would become weeks, and little by little that weekend in Windenburg seemed to become nothing but a memory.

She was working hard as usual, so she started to rise in her career. She was very happy about it, but also quite exhausted.

Of course, a quick nap was all she needed to feel recharged and ready to work a little more on her writing skills.

To relax, she'd grab one of her many unfinished books and sit comfortably to read it. Maybe it could even inspire some of her own stories.

When she got hungry, all she had to do was go to the kitchen to get some delicious onigiri her dad had prepared before going to work. His food was the best!

But as soon as she went upstairs again, Rin started to feel nauseated. That was quite unusual, her father's amazing food would never make her feel that way.

Rin: No... it can't be what I'm thinking, right?

She quickly remembered that in the night she slept with Gunther, they weren't exactly safe. But she didn't think this kind of thing could happen on her first time!

She decided to take some pregnancy tests but when she set foot in the bathroom... she felt that urge to throw up and ended up saying goodbye to all she had just eaten.

That made her feel even more nervous as she cleaned the toilet. That haunting possibility was becoming more and more real.

Finally, she managed to take the test. She stared at it nervously while she waited for the lines to appear, hoping they wouldn't.

But soon she could see two lines. The confirmation was now right there before her eyes.

Rin: I... I'm pregnant...!

Rin went back to her room and felt her legs getting weak. She sat on the floor and hugged her knees. What was she going to do now? How would she tell her father? He would be so disappointed...

And right at that moment, Kenji was coming home from work.

He went upstairs to his daughter's room as soon as he arrived.

Kenji: I'm home, sweetie, what would you like for dinner?

And he'd find Rin on the floor like that. She couldn't even look at him.

Rin: Dad... I...

Of course that made him worry.

Kenji: Rin, what happened?

Kenji finally convinced Rin to sit with him on her bed and the two remained in silence for a while. He didn't force her to speak, he let her take her time and decide when she was ready to finally say it.

Rin: I met someone in Windenburg... we... we slept together and... I just found out I'm pregnant.

Kenji took a deep breath, trying to digest the news. After a minute or two, he placed his hand over hers.

Kenji: Are you sure?

Rin: Yes... I took three tests. They all came out positive.

Kenji: And what do you want to do about it, sweetie?

Rin: I... I don't think I have the guts to end it. But I also didn't want to disappoint you like this, dad...

Kenji: Hey, hey... I'm not disappointed, Rin.

Rin: But... I'm pregnant of a guy I barely know... this is a great shame for a lot of families here.

Kenji: My dear, those who enjoy judging others for their choices are the ones actually living in a glass house. Your mother's family judged her a lot for wanting to snowboard, and that made her keep her distance from them completely. I don't want that for you, I want you to know you're safe here.

Rin: You're right, I'll talk to him. And dad... do you think I can be a mother as good as mom was?

Kenji: Just be yourself, Rin. You're determined, kind and lovable. I know you can be an amazing mom if you're just the way you are.

Rin stayed there in her father's arms for a few more minutes. Talking to him lifted all the weight from her shoulders. Indeed, her biggest fear was the judgement, but if the people she loved, those who really matter, would stay by her side, she couldn't care less about the rest.

That same night, before going to bed, Rin called her best friend. Naomi had to know about that too.

Rin: Hey, I'll take a couple of days off this week and I'll be going to Windenburg soon. Can I stay at your place again?

After everything they did, Rin ended up falling asleep in Gunther's arms and staying the night at his place.

Hours passed by and soon the Sun started to rise again and illuminate Windenburg.

The smell of a delicious breakfast being made was now flowing through every corridor of that big house.

Rin woke up and looked around a bit confused. She noticed where and with whom she was, and her memories of the other night started to come back and explain why she was sleeping with somebody else's shirt.

Heavy footsteps began to approach the bedroom and seemed to stop right in front of its door.

Wolfgang: Gunther, wake up. Mom is calling for breakfast and she's asking if your girlfriend is staying.

Rin: Oh my Watcher...! Rin had never gotten up so fast.

Gunther: Mmm... what happened? Gunther was still drowzy when he saw the girl jumping off his bed like that.

The two got up and started getting dress. Rin seemed to be doing that as fast as she could. Gunther just watched her in silence, but a bit worried.

Rin: Why didn't you tell me you lived with your mother and brothers? Watcher, this is so embarrassing... what if any of them heard us?

Gunther: I... didn't think it would be a problem. Listen, can I call you later?

Rin: Yes... maybe... I don't know. I'm going back to Mt. Komorebi real soon, Gunther. Maybe, it would be better if you don't.

Naomi sighed deeply as she started to calm down.

Naomi: Well, at least you're here now and you seem in one piece. Now can you please tell me where you spent the night?

Rin told Naomi all about Gunther and the night she spent at his place. She also talked about her shame when she realized his mom knew she was there.

Then, the two spent the day together, doing things Naomi had planned. And on the following morning, it was time for Rin to return to Mt. Komorebi.

This story starts in a beautiful sunny morning in Mt. Komorebi, the home where our heroine grew up and current lives.

Rin was up early to get ready for a long trip. She would soon be leaving for Windenburg to spend the weekend there.

She actually knew someone who lived there. Her childhood bestie, Naomi. Naomi's mom was also from Mt. Komorebi and she was born there. The two girls met at school and were inseparable, they even went to Foxbury together. But after college, Rin came back home, and Naomi moved to Windenburg.

Downstairs, Rin's father, Kenji Yamada, was preparing a delicious breakfast for them.

When everything was ready, the two sat down to eat.

Kenji: So? Excited for your first trip all by yourself?

Rin: Yep! I can't wait to see everything there. I'm sure Windenburg will fill me with inspiration for my books!

Kenji: Have you already checked to see if you're taking everything you need with you? Will it really be just that bag?

Rin: It's just a weekend, dad, I'll be fine. And if I need anything else there, I know Naomi will help me out. Now let's finish eating, I still need to say goodbye to mom.

Rin: I'm leaving now, mom. I think that if you were still here, you'd be saying it's about time... I know I'm not adventurous like you were, but I'll try my best to not hesitate and actually be open to new things during this trip. Then I'll have a lot to tell you about my "adventure" when I come back!

After saying goodbye to her mother, Rin grabbed her suitcase and met with her dad outside. He had a sad smile on his face.

Kenji: I think it's only hitting me now that you're actually leaving...

Rin: Dad, come on! I'll be back in a few days and everything will be the same again.

Gunther: Oh, nice to meet you, Rin, my name is Gunther. Well, I was gonna meet a friend from work to drink, but she got sick and she only remembered to message me now. You... You're not from here, are you, Rin?

Gunther: I-I... I'm sorry, I didn't mean to say something offensive. It's just... I think I'd remember if I had seen a girl like you around here before.

She started laughing in an adorable and captivating way.

Gunther smiled even more as he watched her laugh like that. Her energy charmed him. He felt like he wanted to know more and more about that girl.

More beers were ordered. And the distance between the two was soon reduced. As the time passed, they felt more and more comfortable around each other.

Gunther was also a writer, so he and Rin could share all their thoughts about that career, their struggles, and what inspired them the most.

All that talking and quite some flirting here and there, and soon the two were acting like a real couple.

The scenario helped, of course. Windenburg was beautiful. The night was a bit cold, which begged them to stay close like that. And the music coming from the night club was quite compelling.

But it was getting quite late, and both of them were far too inebriated.

Gunther: I gotta go home, Rin...

Rin: Do you really? So... Can I come with you?

Gunther: Don't tempt me like that... if I take you home, in this state, I won't be able to hold myself.

Rin turned to face him with a smile as she touched his chin gently. R: What if you don't have to hold yourself? She whispered and finally allowed her lips to find his.

Truth is that wasn't just their first kiss together, but their first kiss in general. Both had always been the quiet and introverted type, way too shy to get involved. And now that such contact was finally happening, they knew they wouldn't be able to let go of each other so soon.

And just like that, the two were in front of Gunther's house. They went straight to his bedroom.

Gunther: Are you sure you wanna do this, Rin?

Rin: Gunther... just kiss me, will you?

He did as she asked, holding her gently and slowly letting his hands travel down her body to literally lift her up.
