Under dimmed, orange hued lights, Suehiro finds himself once again at the bar, mindlessly studying clients as they come and go. Cigarette in mouth, he watches older, dishevelled men harassing young boys, forcing themselves on them, shoving money on their faces and taking them upstairs, usually by force, rarely by consent, their heavy footsteps a tell-tale sign of their impatience. Observing the hustle and bustle of the brothel, especially on Fridays and Saturdays, when neat, strict men loosened up and danced with huge feather scarfs around their necks – a tacky replacement for their neckties – back when the boys wore smiles on their faces and the saloon was lively and vibrant was one of Suehiro's favorite activity, aside from playfully flirting with the clients.

As time went on, however, that soon faded away, in part because of the declining clientele, but mostly due to Suehiro's own shift in perception regarding the brothel and its now decaying status: what was once a luxurious, exclusive space to entertain elegant, wealthy men catastrophically collapsed and turned into yet another filthy, run down undermanaged shithole of a bar, not so different from other properties nearby, who suffered the same fate.
