This has literally ALWAYS been the case for animation. Year after year they’d release comments to the effect of “yeah animation is for kids so i just picked the Disney one/the one my kid liked.” Leading to animated films that were uncontested masterworks of the craft losing to Big Hero Six.

But the last decade it’s become increasingly obvious how little the academy voters actually give a shit about film, despite ostensibly being industry professionals, regularly snubbing foreign films or minority led films in a super transparent manner. The “campaigning” (read: bribery) that high budget films do and the prevalence of “oscar bait” continue to demonstrate the immense gap between academy voters and even mainstream audiences, let alone people who actually give a shit about film as a medium.

In 2012 the academy membership was 94% white, 77% male, 86% age 50 or older, and had a median age of 62.

Despite very public efforts to “diversify” membership— about half the board of governors was female in 2020– they’ve yet to demonstrate anything but the most grudging, minimal commitment to change.

Leading everyone to conclude “ah, so this was all a joke to you then. So all the pomp and circumstance was a circus routine. Fuck this then.” and they stopped watching. Important non us filmmakers stopped even submitting because why bother? The oscar’s viewing numbers have been plummeting for a while but they were still trying to blame it on the death of cable.

This article explores XR’s use of nonviolence research, particularly the ‘3.5% rule’. The 3.5% rule is drawn from empirical research done by Chenoweth and Stephan (2011) on resistance campaigns from 1990-2006. In the dataset developed by Chenoweth and Stephan every campaign that mobilised at least 3.5% of the population in sustained protest was successful. However, Chenoweth and Stephan’s data relates to state-wide systemic change, mainly overthrowing autocratic governments, and does not apply to change in liberal democratic states. Yet XR has adopted the 3.5% rule as being relevant to the liberal democratic context that it operates in, spreading this understanding throughout its global movement.

Examples of successful (American) peaceful protests include:

The Civil Rights Movement This movement used nonviolent protests, boycotts, and demonstrations to end legal segregation and restore voting rights for African Americans. The movement culminated in the Civil Rights Act of 1964. 

The Stonewall protests In 1969, the LGBTQ community protested the police raid of the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village. These protests inspired decades of activism within the LGBTQ community. 

The Freedom Rides These rides demonstrated the power of nonviolent direct action. They were one of the earliest demonstrations that Gandhian principles of nonviolence could be effective in the American civil rights movement. 

Other examples The Montgomery Bus Boycott of 1955, The student lunch counter sit-ins of 1960, and The Salt Marches.

Stellarium Dress
