This idea was extremely persistent in western literature and lasted well into the 20th century. The idea of not being able to judge books by their covers is a pretty modern concept.

And if you’re wondering about Beauty and the Beast, the original* story wasn’t saying “don’t judge books by their covers.” The moral was closer to “don’t break your promises (doesn’t matter if your dad just died and you’d like to attend the funeral, don’t break your God damn promises.)”

Love at first sight makes a lot more sense when you can tell someone is a good person just by looking at them. Like, it’s not a coincidence that the most beautiful girl in the village was also the one kind enough to fall in love with the Beast. Cinderella’s stepsisters are ugly because they are evil. The Evil Queen isn’t just being vain, Snow White being fairer than her is a legitimate threat, and obviously, as her machinations to get rid of Snow White get more and more twisted, so does she. And this can happen in reverse as well. The Plain Princess is a story of a princess who is plain, selfish, and lazy. Scared that their daughter is plain, her parents send her to fairy godmother bootcamp, where she learns the value of hardwork, kindness, and becomes more beautiful.

I have never heard a fairy tale that doesn’t function on the beauty = goodness logic. So be aware of it when adapting a fairy tale, because if you aren’t using this logic yourself and you don’t replace this logic with something, a lot of your characters get their motivations reduced to “because we’re referencing this fairy tale and they did it in that one.”

Don’t let your negative and insecure thoughts take over! You have the power to replace them with more supportive, positive words! 💛
