Happy Easter everybody! Here's to finding our feet! β€οΈ
How do you get to Carnegie Hall?
This is another promising access method - the Head Mouse. That little silver bindi can do what eye gaze can do, triggering targets on the same communication device. This is interesting because moving his head (in order to move the head mouse) is a gross motor movement, whereas moving your eyes is fine motor, which for this guy seems to be a bit more difficult. I think we'll trial eye gaze for a month & then hopefully trial the head mouse for another month. May the force be with us!
Getting new PRC communication device calibrated so Maceo can work on talking with his eyes. If he can get rolling on it, he'll use his eye gaze to select words, letters, etc to tell us WHATEVER HE WANTS - which will be thrilling!! Using eye gaze for communication is a lot of work and very fatiguing for little eyeball muscles. But after seeing some older kids using it, Maceo has been asking to try it again. By the way, this is how Stephen Hawking speaks these days. ππΌβ΅οΈβ€οΈ

Nitty gritty.
He was so tiny!! This is from 4 years ago on the night we saw My Name Is Maceo, the documentary that two USC students, David McAlpine & Lexie Cook made about our guy.
Just three great dudes hanging out today. Thank you universe for incredible new friends! These are the days. πβ΅οΈβ€οΈ

Maceo won an award at school today for academic achievement. He's been working hard on learning to use switches to communicate with his iPad. There are two switches connected to his chair which he activates with his knees. Direct selection (meaning touching the screen with his hands) is still his preferred method of communicating. But until we get the access to the screen issue solved, switches is another method we're trying. And though it's his second choice, using switches Maceo is now finally communicating 100% independently. He is just learning & it'll be a long process getting it down but this is a big step. He seemed so surprised to get his award! It was really cute. Then when it hit him, he was just delighted. Joe & I are most thankful to have Maceo at CHIME charter school. His teachers treat him & all the kids with such kindness & respect. It's truly inspiring!
