“The Father - Nulla è come sembra”, uno dei candidati nella categoria Miglior film agli Oscars 2021, racconta la storia di Anthony, un uomo anziano che soffre di demenza senile e non riesce più a capire quello che succede intorno a lui. È l’esordio alla regia di Florian Zeller, che ha co-scritto la sceneggiatura basata sulla pièce teatrale di Zeller “Le Père”. Il copione teatrale è in francese, e il protagonista si chiama André, ma Zeller ha deciso di scrivere la sceneggiatura in inglese e cambiare il nome in Anthony perché l’unico attore che riusciva a immaginare nella parte era Anthony Hopkins.

- You don’t know how the battle is gonna turn out?

- No. If you have orcs fighting elves, you teach CGI orcs how to fight like orcs and CGI elves to fight like elves. You’re literally not in control. You have this huge battle scenes with horses for and that renders for about three days and we don’t know what it’s gonna be like, so we wait and see.

- [Per il Signore degli Anelli] dovevo fare scene di battaglia enormi, e nei film di Hollywood quando si tratta di grandi folle in realtà al massimo ci sono duemila persone. Ma Tolkien parla del Fosso di Helm e diecimila Uruk-hai, e l’unico modo di farlo era a computer. Quindi abbiamo creato il software “Massive”, dove ogni “persona da computer” fa le proprie scelte. Ai primi screen test c’erano 30 persone CGI che si correvano addosso, e la metà si è girata ed è scappata via, quindi abbiamo dovuto renderle meno intelligenti e dirgli di rimanere a combattere.

- Quindi non sapevate come sarebbe andata la battaglia?

- No. Se hai degli orchi che combattono gli elfi, insegni agli orchi CGI a combattere come orchi e agli elfi CGI a combattere come elfi. Non li puoi controllare. Hai queste scene di battaglia enormi con i cavalli e le fai andare per circa tre giorni e non sai come verrà, quindi attendi.

Klaus is a new origin story for Santa Claus, about a postman that gets sent to the remote town of Smeerensburg and befriends a reclusive toy maker. Sergio Pablos, the director, used mostly traditional 2D hand-drawn animation, while animated film nowadays use 3D animation and CGI. Pablos wanted it to give the movie a nostalgic component, but he overcame some of the limitations of 2D using lighting to give volume to the characters.

"One of the early inspirations that we had for this film was 'Batman Begins,'" said Pablos, whose version of Santa is taciturn, has dealt with loss and has a toy shop that could be seen as a sort of Batcave. "You can definitely say people have described it as 'Santa Begins.'

Klaus è una nuova storia sulle origini di Babbo Natale, che parla di un postino che viene mandato nella remota città di Smeerensburg e fa amicizia con un giocattolaio solitario. Sergio Pablos, il regista, ha usato principalmente animazione tradizionale, in 2D e disegnata a mano, mentre al giorno d’oggi i film d’animazione usano 3D e CGI. Pablos voleva dare un tono nostalgico al film, ma è riuscito a superare alcune limitazione del 2D usando l’illuminazione per dare spessore ai personaggi.
