(I asked my mom if she would ever write about Alan & Wendy for me and she actually did!!! So all the credit for this story goes to my mom!! ^^)
⊹ ࣪ ˖ Introductions ˖ ࣪ ⊹
She sat there listening to the hushed tones of customers conversing. The clanging and banging of pots and pans in the kitchen drowning them out to a mere murmur. This was the last retro diner before she would arrive at her destination. Only a 10 minute drive and she would see her grown son again.
Her brown eyes moistened as she stared at this old and torn photograph. How had it already been 15 years since her world was turned upside down she wondered. Staring back at her was her son Danny. This picture was a school photo taken right before they left for the trip that would change all their lives.
It took her many years to move past it and she was glad she could pluck out the good memories and leave all the nastiness behind her. Danny was 21 now and currently roaming around Montana. He hadnt stayed in one place long enough to put down any roots but Wendy had hopes that this town could be the one.
As she was lost in her memories she heard a male clear his throat. She glanced around until her eyes landed on the man to her right. His piercing blue eyes stared back at her. She felt uncomfortably aware that he was very focused on her face. Even though it was mere seconds she felt she was frozen unsure why she couldn’t say anything. Just as she felt she couldn’t bare a single second more, his face softened and he broke into a genuine smile. "I’m sorry to bother you but you seem to have dropped something." he said.
She glanced down and realized her photograph of Danny had fallen to the floor. "Oh. I didn’t realize." she replied. She smiled at him as a thank you.
He stood there awkwardly for a moment before he removed his hat as a pleading gesture. "Do you mind if I sit here?" he asked.
Wendy took a brief moment to glance around the diner and noticed most of the lunch rush had cleared out. "Sure." she stammered, unsure of his intentions. Why did he want to sit next to me? She wondered.
The ruggedly handsome man sat his hat on the counter and pulled up a stool next to her. He grabbed the closest menu and began studying it. She nervously looked down not sure what to say or even if he wanted to have a conversation with her.
He began by saying he had returned to town after being on an excursion of a lifetime.
She only nodded unsure what he did for a living and too shy to pry.
She noticed his clothing was dusty like he worked in sandy fields so she assumed a contractor of some sort. He had a commanding presence about him so she knew he wasn’t working for someone else.
The waitress came by just then asking the mysterious stranger for his order. He politely ordered the club sandwich with a side of fries. He closed the menu and turned to Wendy. "I’m sorry to intrude on your time but I’d really like human company after the trying weekend I just had."
Wendy smiled. He smiled back and said "I’d like to introduce myself… I’m Alan Grant."
Wendy sighed and noticeably relaxed her shoulders. She didn’t know why but she felt at ease for the first time in years. "Hi Alan, I’m Wendy….Wendy Torrance" she replied.
