Aside from the crested Hadrosaurs and Horned Ceratopsians, Stegosaurus is known for having one of the most unique display structures in the dinosaur world.
Ever since Othnel Charles Marsh discovered and named the dinosaur in 1877, paleontologists have questioned the function of these plates for decades. Many suspect that they were used for thermoregulation, identical to how an African Elephant uses its ears. Others believe that they were used to strut for the females to showcase who had the best genetics come breeding season.
The only thing that is not debated on is the function of the tail spikes or thagomizers (not my idea for that name). Most paleontologists agree that the tail spikes were used in self defense, on the real animal they each would have been 3ft long and razor sharp at the point. Perfect for dispatching the neighboring Allosaurus or Ceratosaurus in the Morrison Formation.
