2 hr lay-in demo for my figure painting class. 24 x 18 in, verithin pencil and raw umber on shellacked Strathmore paper.

I love complexity in painting, largely because I've never been a "less is more" kind of person. Still, I find it extremely important to add this complexity by degrees. Most of the time, the only way to do this is by aggressively simplifying in the early stages and only tackling one task at a time.

Meandering lecture featuring hands, feet and fat pads in relation to age

More advanced head construction model for my Monday evening class. Here we added nasolabial fatpads and masseter muscles, along with a more complete skull. The second image was an explanation of how we start out with a few manageable planes and then gradually add more planes to make the surface closer and closer to a curve. If you want to try this, take a strip of paper and fold it a couple of times. Then fold it a few more times. You'll notice that the more you fold it, the more the paper curves. If you hold it under a light source, you'll also notice that each square of the paper is a different value. Swipe to the end and Cooper will show you. This is the underlying principle for the way I construct and paint. It keeps things organized and we only add complexity as needed.
