I think it’s really easy to forget how magical the world is. In fact, I do it all the time. I don’t mean magic in the “ghosts, unicorns, and wizards” kind of way, but more in the ethereal, unbelievable brilliance of it all, how-the-hell-could-a-place-like-this-even-exist kind of way. Once we step outside the realm of the man and back into nature, it’s easy to see how our ancestors had such wild imaginations. Stories of gods, personifications of inanimate objects, connections with things like trees and water that we hear about and laugh at now. I’ll just write it off as a metaphor, right? But there must’ve been some unrelenting awe for the space around them that inspired all of these stories, legends, and ideas. Some life force had to be behind the initial drive to create. People told stories because they understood that they didn’t understand anything. Any explanation or deity was as good an explanation as any! The world around them was so unpredictable, beautiful, brutal, and extraordinary, that there really wasn’t much else to do!

Being surrounded by so much man made can make man forget why man made in the first place.

Every man made thing is just a road sign for an idea that nature already perfected. When surrounded by buildings and cars, and metal and asphalt, it’s easy to make assumptions; assumptions that we know everything. By boxing ourselves into our made up world with our made up toys, we created a world that we could digest and understand, but in that process we killed the magic that inspired it for us.

Now, just because it’s all we see around us, does not mean it is true. While huge skyscrapers mimic mountains, all they do is serve as an idea for a thing we used to revere. But there is no magic in a skyscraper; sure it’s impressive, and can be beautiful, but no one stops to wonder how it got there because we know exactly how it got there. It’s a much different experience to stare at a sunset and wonder how it got there.
