Websites Every Microsoft .NET Developer Should Know About

There are currently millions of developers worldwide that are using Microsoft.NET technologies. If you are one of them or want to become one, then each of the websites I am about to list should be in your list of favorites, your list of bookmarks, or just written down on a piece of paper (yeah right, as if a .NET developer would use a pen and paper).
For those of you not familiar with Microsoft.NET technologies, they represent a platform and set of tools that computer programmers can use to build very rich, interactive applications for the Windows desktop, the Internet, or even hand-held mobile devices. Chances are strong that one of your favorite websites was built using Microsoft ASP.NET.
1. CodeProject
I cannot count the number of times I have downloaded code from this site over the years. The quick and helpful articles always include a code download and are written by real world developers who give you straight to the point help for a particular coding problem.
Developers who submit articles to the website are not paid, but instead submit the article and code to get approval of the site’s community. The site covers more than just .NET and the Windows platform, so it is a good resource for developers that need to go outside of their normal skill sets.
2. DotNetNuke
DotNetNuke is an open source framework that developers can download and use to build their own web applications using Microsoft ASP.NET. If you are a .NET developer and you have not at least downloaded the code to look at it, then you really need to immediately.The software has been through several iterations over the years and demonstrates some of the most efficient coding practices around. Even though the site includes a professional edition for purchase, there is a community edition which is free to download and very much worth registering free with the site to access.
3. 4GuysFromRolla
If you are a web developer, which let’s face it, most .NET developers are, then this is a must visit site. It includes articles that cover everything you need to know about ASP.NET and even includes a lot of information for ASP developers (because, believe it or not, there are still developers out there using ASP).
Over the years, I have had numerous problems resolved by looking at posts on their forum or learned how to incorporate some slick new feature using one of the frequently posted articles.
4. DevSource
As you can see from the image, this online development magazine is sponsored by Microsoft, but don’t hold that against them. I strongly suggest subscribing to their free weekly newsletter, since it will keep you up to date on all the latest rumblings coming out of Microsoft.
You also should check out the DevLife column, which includes regular posts by the experienced and very down to earth, Julia Lerman.
5. DevX
Another online development magazine, this one is not solely focused on Microsoft technologies and tends to profile some really interesting and niche technologies.
I have personally written several articles for them since they are one of the only web sites that wants articles about robotics and speech technologies. Their near daily stream of articles cover everything from traditional .NET development to VB classic (yeah, because there are still some people doing that still).
6. MSDN Magazine
MSDN Magazine is for the development world what the Nature Journal is for scientists. It includes standards that every developer should be following. They are VERY strict on what content gets into this journal. An article in MSDN magazine is typically much longer and more in depth than articles in any of the online resources I have previously mentioned. But you can feel assured that the articles were scoured and well picked though before making it to print.
7. Channel9
This Microsoft resource is a must see for anyone that loves to watch videos about really cool technologies. The Channel 9 team goes around the Microsoft campus interviewing various teams and often offers a sneak peek of up and coming software and technology.
In addition to interviewing the folks at Microsoft, Channel 9 also talks to industry gurus outside of Microsoft.
8. ScottGu’s Blog
Scott Guthrie is the Corporate Vice President for the Developer Division at Microsoft and his regularly updated blog often features announcements not seen any where else.
Scott covers everything from .NET base class libraries to Silverlight. If you want to impress your developer friends with your seemingly inside track to Microsoft, this is the site to visit.

How ASCII Lost and Unicode Won
If you’ve ever heard someone complaining that “this system doesn’t support double-byte characters”, or asking whether “this data’s in Unicode”, and felt as though you really ought to understand what those things mean, then this post is for you.
This isn’t a technical discussion, but I will use the terms bits and bytes. So before we go on, let’s recap and ask:
What’s a bit?
A bit is a binary digit. It can store one of two possible values: 0 or 1. Computers like bits because there are plenty of mechanical ways you can distinguish between two possible values – for example, by switching a current on or off.
What’s a byte?
A byte is a set of 8 bits. Computers typically move data around a byte at a time. You can store 2-to-the-power-8 or 256 possible values in a single byte.
In the beginning there was ASCII
In order to exchange text with people using computers, we need a way of representing words as sequences of zeroes and ones.
ASCII is the American Standard Code for Information Interchange. It uses 7-bit numbers to represent the letters, numerals and common punctuation used in American English.
The fact that ASCII uses 7-bit numbers means there are 2-to-the-power-7 or 128 possible values it can represent, from 0 to 127 inclusive. Each of those 128 values is assigned to a character. For example, in ASCII the number 65 represents an upper-case letter A, 61 represents an equals sign, and so on. So if a word processor that displays ASCII text gets a byte with a value of 65, it displays an upper-case letter A on the screen.
These mappings of numbers to characters are just a convention that someone decided on when ASCII was developed in the 1960s. There’s nothing fundamental that dictates that a capital A has to be character number 65, that’s just the number they chose back in the day.
What’s wrong with ASCII?
Nothing whatsoever – as long as you speak English. Here’s the English word “Hello” with the ASCII numbers for each character shown beneath.
Nothing wrong there! Let’s try something with some punctuation.
It certainly does! This is great. How about foreign languages?
Oh.
Accented characters such as a-umlaut don’t exist in ASCII. You simply can’t represent them in text encoded as ASCII. The best you could do is use the unaccented equivalent and hope it doesn’t change the meaning to something rude.
ASCII really should have been named ASCIIWOA: the American Standard Code for Information Exchange With Other Americans.
What’s the solution?
“Well,” thought our forebears, “we could just add an extra bit. If we made ASCII an 8-bit code, it could store another 128 values. That should be enough to store all those weird, accented characters, right?”
And this is where it started to go really wrong.
Different bodies came up with different extended ASCII character sets: they all had the same, standard ASCII characters in the first 128 character slots, but the additional 128 characters varied from one character set to the next.
That had two consequences. Firstly, you couldn’t simply take text encoded in an extended ASCII dialect and display it; you had to know which dialect of extended ASCII you were dealing with. For example, in the ISO 8859-1 (Western Europe) extended ASCII character set, number 224 represents a lower-case letter A with a grave accent. However, in ISO 8859-2 (Eastern Europe) the same number represents a lower-case letter R with an acute accent. Interpreting data using the wrong character set was a recipe for disaster.
The second consequence was that if, for example, your software only understood ISO 8859-1 and you received data in ISO 8859-2, and that data included an r-acute character, you couldn’t even display it, since r-acute doesn’t exist in the ISO 8859-1 character set. The best the software could do was to replace these unprintable characters with a question mark, an empty square, or something else to indicate that an encoding problem had occurred. More often than not, they replaced them with the character corresponding to the same number in some other extended ASCII character set, resulting in gibberish.
You could argue that extended ASCII, flawed though it was, could at least provide a usable, basic computing experience for people in most parts of Europe, Africa and the Americas. Put another way, for Slovaks swapping data with other Slovaks, 256 characters gave them enough scope to express their language. It was only when they tried communicating with Greeks, Finns or Estonians that problems arose.
Meanwhile, in Asia…
However, a 256-character set is no use in languages like Chinese and Japanese, where there are thousands of characters in common use. Users of those languages had a whole new level of complexity to deal with.
The solution was multi-byte character sets (sometimes misleadingly referred to as double-byte characters sets). These used sequences of bytes to represent individual characters, and specified rules that software developers could use to determine whether a particular byte in a stream of bytes was a continuation of the previous character or the start of a new one. Multi-byte character sets removed the 256-character limit imposed by extended ASCII.
However, like extended ASCII, they were focused on a particular language. And just like extended ASCII, multiple, incompatible standards emerged. The same code meant different things in different character sets, and as a result cross-encoding issues were as much a problem in Japan as they were in Johannesburg.
Unicode to the rescue
This is where Unicode comes in.
Designed as a single, global replacement for localised character sets, the Unicode standard is beautiful in its simplicity. In essence: collect all the characters in all the scripts known to humanity and number them in one single, canonical list. If new characters are invented or discovered, no problem, just add them to the list. The list isn’t an 8-bit list, or a 16-bit list, it’s just a list, with no limit on its length.
So, in Unicode, character 341 is a lower-case r-acute. Wherever you are in the world, be it in Massachusetts, Mombasa or Myanmar, character 341 is lower-case r-acute. It is the one, true Unicode number for lower-case r-acute. Likewise, character number 2979 is the rather beautiful Tamil letter NNA, character number 5084 is the equally delightful Cherokee letter DLA, and so on.
Unicode contains entries not just for script characters but also mathematical symbols, box drawing elements, braille patterns, domino tiles and all other manner of stuff. The latest version of Unicode contains over 110,000 characters.
Encoding the code
OK, this sounds great. But computers still talk to each other by swapping information a byte at a time. How do I transfer a Cherokee DLA (Unicode character 5084) using bytes?
This is where the Unicode character encodings come in. The most common, UTF-8, is a multi-byte encoding standard. For characters in the original ASCII character set, UTF-8 only needs one byte per character. (In fact, it’s completely backwards compatible with the original 7-bit ASCII standard.) For other Unicode characters, UTF-8 uses two or more bytes per character, and just like the east Asian multi-byte character sets, it adopts a convention that dictates how to determine whether a byte is an ASCII character, the continuation of a previous character, or the start of a new one.
However, unlike those east Asian multi-byte character sets, which were locale-specific, UTF-8 encodes Unicode numbers. A particular UTF-8 byte sequence encodes a particular Unicode number, which in turn represents a particular character, regardless of where in the world you are, or which language you speak. No overlap, no ambiguity.
Alternative schemes for encoding Unicode numbers include UTF-16, also a variable-byte character encoding but one in which every character is represented by one or more pairs of bytes. That ends up being wasteful if you’re dealing predominantly with English text; one of the reasons why UTF-8 has become the dominant choice.
So there you have it. The history of character encoding in a nutshell.

It isn't a rare scenario when you are probably talking to a foreigner or are in a foreign land and want to use the common expression "just Google it".
And when you might want to say it, if English isn't an understandable language, it sure can be quite a task.
For your help, American online news website, the Atlantic Wire, has now compiled a list of how to say "to Google" in a few of their favourite languages, News.com.au reports.
For example, if you have been wasting your time arguing for hours over a beer with an Israeli, you can just say you are going to "l'gagel".

Gmail's new compose and reply experience
You can now write messages in a cleaner, simpler experience that puts the focus on your message itself, not all the features around it. Here are some of the highlights:
Fast: Compose messages right from your inbox.
Simple: Redesigned with a clean, streamlined look.
Powerful: Check emails as you're typing, minimize drafts for later, and even compose two messages at once.
Try it out!
Once you click the Compose button, click the "new compose experience" link right next to the Labels button at the top of the message. Until the change is fully launched, you'll be able to choose whether you use the new or current experience.
If you change your mind or if you need to use a feature that isn't available yet, you can switch back to the old experience at any time. Here's how:
Click Compose
At the bottom corner of the message pane, click the More menu icon next to the Discard button.
Select "Switch back to old compose."
Details of the compose window
Instead of taking up your entire Gmail window, clicking Compose now opens a smaller window at the bottom of your screen. Here are some of the features that you'll see:
Recipients: Click this text field to type email addresses. You can also click the Cc or Bcc links to add a new set of recipients. Drag and drop recipients from one field to another, or click the "x" to remove them from your message. Hover over the recipient to see details about them, or double-click on them to edit their address.
Text formatting: Click this icon to add formatting like font size, bold, underline, and bullets. Or, use our new formatting keyboard shortcuts. Hover over each button to learn the keyboard shortcut you can use for that option. Alignment and indentation options are now collapsed under the alignment icon.
Attachments: Click the Attachment icon to attach files to your message. Hovering over the Attachment icon will also open the insert options menu.
Insert options: Hover over the plus icon to embed photos, links, emoticons, and Google Calendar events. This menu will also open when hovering over the Attachment icon.
Discard: Click the trash can icon to delete your draft.
More options: Click this menu to see other tools such as spell check, plain text format, print, adding labels, and including original attachments. Some options may not yet be ready; you’ll see them in grey until they become available to use.
Window size: The writing pane grows as your message gets longer. If you want the window to be bigger, click the middle icon at the top right of the pane to open the message in a new window. Use the other icons to minimize or close the window (which will also save your draft).
Saving: Gmail automatically saves your drafts while you’re writing, so we've removed the "Save now" button (but you can verify that it’s saved if you see the word, "Saved" next to the Discard button). Your draft will also be automatically saved when you close the compose window.
Send mail as: If you use Gmail to send mail from another address (like your work address), click into the "To" field, then click the "From" link to select which address you’d like to send mail from.
Changes when replying or forwarding
You’ll also see some differences when replying to or forwarding messages. Most of the changes are similar to those that you'll see when composing a brand new message. Here are a few additional changes:
Recipients: To change who your message should be sent to, click into the recipient field when you’re replying.
Type of response: Click the arrow next to the recipient’s name to choose whether your message is a reply, reply all, or forward.
Subject: To change the subject of your message, click the arrow next to the recipient’s name and click "Start separate conversation."
Respond inline: If you want to see the previous message within your reply, scroll down until you see the "Show trimmed content" icon and click it.

Richard Lee Norris, Face Transplant
The University of Maryland released details on the recovery of Richard Lee Norris, the 37-year-old man who received the most extensive full face transplant completed to date seven months ago. Norris, of Hillsville, Virginia, was injured in a 1997 gun accident, losing much of his upper and lower jaws as well as his lips and nose. The transplant surgery, completed on March 20, 2012 at the University of Maryland Medical Center, included replacement of both jaws, teeth, tongue, and skin and underlying nerve and muscle tissue from scalp to neck.

Google's 14th Birthday :)
As Google turns 14 with an animated doodle to celebrate the day, India have had its fair share of Doodles from the world’s best known search engine to mark special local occasions. Google hosted more number of Doodles to celebrate Indian sentiment than any other country in BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India and China) block. Search engine Google that has been linking its delightful Doodles with cultural and social events across the globe is gradually developing India as one of its favorites. Google first dedication to India through its doodle was made in 2003 on the eve of India’s 56th Independence Day and since then the cherished journey of dedications has completed nine glorified years. Along with Doodles, Google has also given Indians a liberty to use their favourite search engine in nine Indian languages. A Zee Research Group (ZRG) study shows that India is definitely one amongst the most celebrated nations with most Google Doodles dedications if compared within BRICS as also the countries within the SAARC block. While three of Indian festivals and important events were represented colourfully through Doodles in 2012, other nations like Brazil, Russian Federation and South Africa only had just one Doodles dedication each during 2012.The only nation in BRICS that could come closer to India was China with two representations. In 2012, Google beautifully portrayed Indian tradition and Culture through its doodle representations including India’s 63rd Republic day featuring three joyful elephants denoting Indian culture , three umbrellas representing the “Tiranga ”and the letter 'O' in the word Google was depicted through the Ashoka Chakra. Many other Doodles like the one made on International Women's Day had Indian representations through a red dot symbolizing Indian Bindi and following last year’s tradition, Doodles again celebrated India’s 66th Independence Day on August 15 in 2012 featuring national bird of India i.e. Peacock. Is it smart marketing or genuine love for netizens in India? Rajul Gupta, business analyst from ANUVA Technologies (an Internet Search consulting company) says, “Unlike many other nations, India is low with options of search engines. We do not have a “Made in India” search engine. Therefore, relying on Google is pretty obvious while Google is also tapping this opportunity turning hyper-local through its Doodle offerings.” Talking on India specific Google Doodles, Manish Khopkar, Vice President (Product & Projects), Micro Technologies, an Internet safety firm, says, “As a substantial workforce and audience for Google comes from India, the country's icons, events or personalities are enormously inspiring Google doodle makers to go local.” He adds that, “India is a multilingual, multi-religious and multi-cultural nation. The Indian calendar is one long procession of festivals so it becomes easy for Google to dedicate more Doodles to India and the number comparatively goes higher than other nations.” During 2011 Indian dedication in Google‘s Doodles was evidenced in a big way. These included a doodle each from Google for 80th anniversary of the movie Alam Ara on March 14, Holi on March 19, 65th Independence Day of India on August 15, and 82nd birth anniversary of artist Anant Pai on September 17. Google India organized a competition for creation of Doodles by young talent in India and the winning entry of Indian musical instruments created by Varsha Gupta on the eve of Children’s Day on 14th November was hosted on Google world page. ZRG analysis shows that India’s representation in Doodles is also the highest amongst SAARC nations. While Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives Nepal and Sri Lanka had no dedicated Doodles, Pakistan apart from India was the only SAARC nation that had one dedicated doodle both in 2011 and 2012. India is an important market for Google and a recent search engine study showed that 60 per cent Indian students rapidly used Google as their first source to search for information related to educational courses and institutes. These searches are growing at over 46 per cent year-on-year, said the recently published results of Google India Survey. Another survey among adults on Google trends showed that India was next only to Pakistan when it came to search for pornographic material.
