my first experience with the term ‘sealioning’ was directed at me because I was struggling to understand a concept and I was being slowly whittled down to a breaking point by the incredibly rude leftist who treated me like an idiot for not already knowing. It was so unimportant I don’t even remember what we were arguing over, but it wasn’t until I was literally crying irl from hurt and confusion and outed myself as autistic to a complete stranger that I was treated like a human being. I should NOT have had to reveal my personal information.

And y’know what?  EVERY INSTANCE I HAVE EVER SEEN OF THIS HAS BEEN AN AUTISTIC OR OTHERWISE NEURODIVERGENT PERSON STRUGGLING WITH COMPREHENSION. In over five years, across four websites, I have yet to see a single instance of claiming a person was ‘sealioning’ where it wasn’t clearly just ableism and classism packaged in a superiority complex. I’m not saying the trolls aren’t there, but I am saying this has been blown way the fuck out of proportion.

And honestly fuck off with that ‘oh they’re just trying to exhaust me’ okay sorry I know that’s frustrating and no one wants to deal with it. So just post the resources that you should have saved for yourself anyways and move on. The internet is public forum. Even IF that one person was trolling for whatever reason, there are potentials who could see that, see a measured response with resource links, and follow the path you laid. 

But no, you guys would rather treat asking questions as a sign of evil intent, completely alienate ND people on the off-chance that they’re actually ‘just trolling’ you and it’s apparently ridiculous to suggest putting resources out there anyways because it’s better to try and fail than to never put in any effort at all.

People saying “the point of sealioning is to exhaust me!!!1!1″ but idfk from where I’m sitting it looks like the point was to seed complete distrust in civil discourse to the point of rejecting it and that’s worked like a fucking dream. Maybe the point had literally nothing to do with making individuals upsetti and a lot more with destroying the foundation for informative communication in the leftist online spaces. I used to be able to ask a fucking question and get a fucking level response. Now I get accused of being a sleepernazi from 4chan because I didn’t take fucking Women’s Studies and PoliSci since I’m too poor for university. 

And two?

The very accusation of Sealioning has always been a bad faith argument that positions the accuser as being too good/important to justify their positions.

That much is pretty obvious from the trope namer, this particular Wondermark Comic.

And let’s be very, BRUTALLY honest here. The comic itself is of someone openly stating their bigotry, and when questioned about that position, refuses to answer and acts openly offended that someone would even ask a WHY.

Hell, we can go even one step further, as the sea lion hater is positioned as if asking these questions (over the comic proxy of an online forum) as invasive and harassing them in their own home… as compared to the actual application, which is, as stated, OVER AN ONLINE FORUM.

Factually, the biology of the person makes up whether you’re a man or woman, if a woman dresses as a man, their chromosomes don’t have to give a shit and keeps them being a woman, thus, still a woman. Clothes don’t change biology no matter how much you scream and cry about it and no, im not being transphobic because i don’t have an extreme or irrational hate or fear of trans people.

“Factually you are an idiot and a transphobe” factually this isn’t a good argument and just makes you look immature and have nothing to back it up

And just like that i can call you a Allodoxaphobe, a phobia of other peoples opinions

Also, say a white guy wants to identify as a black man, can he? And can he use the norms black people can do but is taboo for other races?

Or say a 15 year old wants to go to a club but isn’t of legal age, can he or she identify as an 18-21 year old?

What if a man commits a crime but identifies as a woman in order to serve less time in jail?

Then again, a man identified as a woman and won a womans weight lifting competition but wasn’t awarded for his/her efforts, is that a case of transphobia? Was that fair?
