Next on this space, the art worlds most unchoreographed fight scene.
FRANKIE IS BACK WOOOOOO
As someone who is both an older sister and raised their younger sibling, let me tell you why this scene was so good
It would be so easy to misinterpret Yangβs protectiveness over Blake here, but thatβs not whatβs happening. Weβve always seen Ruby as happy-go-lucky, follow-your-heart and do-the-right-thing, and itβs easy to forget that Yang raised Ruby, and the implied subtext there is that it *wasnβt* always sunshine and rainbows.
Yes, Yang is protective over her newfound relationship. Yes, sheβll maybe feel a little wounded that her sister is lashing out. But what we see here is Yang shifting ever so subtly into mother-mode. Yang knows this isnβt about Blake, or her and Blakeβs relationship, sheβs stepping in front of Blake to protect her before Ruby can say or do something she regrets. In essence, protecting both of them and trying to control the situation from escalating. Yang is stepping in front because she can take it, sheβs GIVING her someone to yell at, because god knows sheβs probably had to, at some point, take some lip in the past while the others have only ever known her as a strong, positive leader. She doesnβt shout at Ruby, sheβs calm, lets her get it out and just looks sternly with a simpleΒ βHey!β as in, βhey, thatβs enough nowβ.Β
Yang has expressed concern, and is concerned, but this is 100% Yang shifting into parent mode. This is brilliant because earlier in the episode and even last episode weβve seen examples of YangβsΒ βconcerned big sisterβ side which is soft and supportive. Thereβs no malice in Yangβs expression, and itβs difficult to catch it because we havenβt had the best representations ofΒ βgood mothersβ in the show, especially not ones that have had to chastise their kids at some point, but you can bet your ass that this is Yangβs parental mode stepping in to bring calm and stability to a chaotic situation. And that doesnβt always present as βletβs hug this outβ, sometimes itβs stern, tough love and recognising that the younger one isnβt in the space to receive comfort, so the best you can do for them is diffuse the situation and be an authoritative voice of reason because she recognises her sisterβs fragile mental state.
This is without going into how amazing Rubyβs portrayal was. Going after your sisterβs new relationship is RAW, and personal, but itβs also what siblings do - they lash out sometimes when theyβre under stress. The way Ruby saysΒ βweβre sOoOo happy for you by the way good for youβ - just SMACKS of younger sibling cutting loose and saying something they donβt mean, which makes Yangβs response all the more realistic for me. She recognises the tone, the almost-petulance and steps in before it can go any further.
Itβs so subtle, but it SPOKE to me so massive kudos to Miles Luna and the animators for this. And god bless the clowns that use it as some sort of Anti-Bees discourse - the nuance is entirely lost on you.
haha gay
Team RWBY and also bumbleby is so fucking funny dynamics wise bc you have the (ex) heiress of the most powerful company on the planet, a princess (basically) with broken ties to a terrorist organization, and two sisters who are farm girls from some tiny island off the coast
And the princess falls for the farm girl with absolutely zero game bc sheβs just that endearing
ππππ this is amazing! Cause this is how exactly how it would be
Yang would exactly be that kinda parent

No but seriously, the fact that Yang thought she was actually in some sort of afterlife after having died protecting her sister and then she sees her team there and is not happy because then that means she didnβt save them and they died anyway. Like, okay, yeah CRWBY just drop that whole load of depression on us.
And the fact that Ruby just walks over and is like βof course weβd come after you, did you forget who raised me?β and itβs totally pointing out that Yang was the parent for a lot of Rubyβs childhood because Summer died in battle (Hound) and Tai shut down and of course if it had been Ruby who went down first Yang wouldnβt have hesitated to go after her!
Oh my god I was not prepared to have my emotions destroyed this early in the volume!
I really love how Blake is the one to identify them as being in a fairy tale - because in any other part of the show, that would be Ruby, who grew up on fairy tales far more than all of the rest of them. But here Blake is the one to take the lead and define the world they've fallen into, because she grew up on stories in the same way Ruby did, but their positions as cynic and hopeful have entirely swapped now. Ruby is fucking depressed and disillusioned, and can't see the world for what it is when the whole world for her was a fairy tale before, and now Blake, who once thought Ruby was naive for that, has regained her hope and optimism with the help of the connections she's made.
Ruby, Weiss, and Yang are working through their own fears and doubts and despair here, but Blake, even though she still is going through a lot, has the one person that matters most to her back and safe, and is able to build on what she's learned and see the bigger picture because of it.
