"What?"

"I’m actually bad at the whole written thing," Steve grins. "Can I give oral instead?"

Eddie fucks one of his students, spends a week nearly sick about it, sick about his career being over and getting fired, and then - "What?"

"Yeah," Robin says after Steve has been missing from eddie's lecture hall for over a week. Missing because - "He's not your student. He doesn't even go to this school. He works in the daycare."

"I - what?"

"You're like the third professor he's done this too," Robin tells him. "He thinks it's funny to make you think you slept with your student."

"I - you -" Eddie pauses, turning to Steve. "What?"

"I like to watch the horror set in your eyes."

Eddie is flabbergasted. He's - he doesn't even know but he knows that Steve is - "You're crazy."

"Yeah," Steve grins. "Are you obsessed with me yet? Do you want to date me?"

"I’m telling," Mr Hauser says. "When we did Death of a Salesman last year, Steve killed his part. If he gives half a shit, he's great. If I can get him to give a whole shit and show up to auditions..."

"The problem is that the kid can't read."

"And Buckley can't walk," Another teacher chimes in. "Never seen a student trip on the stairs as much as her."

"Steve actually does well with plays. I think the formatting bypasses the dyslexia a bit," He says easily. "And Robin is, well. We'll have rehearsals, learn stage directions. The important thing is that she's passionate and animated, and she understands the source material."

He stabs his salad, "I’m telling you, they'd kill the performance and they'd kill an audition."

So...

Turns out Steve has stage fright. Didn't read a goddamn word, just froze up and then turned around and left.

And Robin fell off the stage. One minutes she's giving a passionate monologue and the next, she's unconscious. Great.

"Soooo..."

"Don't say it."

"Tammy gonna be your lead again?"

Callahan sighs. Loudly.

When Chief McKinley offered them time and a half to work security for Larry Cline's campaign fundraiser, Callahan did not consider who would be in attendance. He looks down at Richard Harrington's five year old in his little suit and tie and says, "Go away."

"Are you a good cop or a bad cop?" he asks again. "My dad says there's a lot of bad cops that don't help people. Do you help people or are you a bad cop? Do you protect people like-"

"Christ," He mutters. "I'm a good cop, I-"

"Okay, good," Steve nods. He grabs Callahan's hand and yanks him forward, "Come with me."

Callahan stumbles.

He wasn't expecting the speed or the strength of the kid but he gets his bearings.

He straightens his legs and digs his heels into the ground, and he is not moved again. Steve tries, but Callahan stays where he is and eventually shakes the kid off his hand.

"You hafta come with me," Steve complains. "I need police protection."

"From what?" He asks. Steve hesitated and Callahan rolls his eyes, "What you need is a babysitter and it's not going to be me. I’m working so shoo."

Steve stands there for a second.

He pouts at the floor and then - "Help me with one thing and I'll leave you alone. Promise."

Callahan sighs, "...What is it?"

"I jus' need you to come with me over there," Steve insists, pointing at a crowd of people. "I’m little and sometimes people step on me. I need you to protect me like a good police man."

He sighs again.

He supposes that is a problem an unattended toddler would have so, "Sure, lead the way."

Steve's whole face lights up and he grabs Callahan by the hand again. This time he lets the kid lead him.

Steve seems to have no problem getting through the crowd and honestly, that should've been Callahan's first hint to get the hell out of there.

"Uncle Larry!" Steve says when they're close enough. He takes a step back when - always the politician - Larry tries to pick him up. "Uncle Larry, I half'ta tell you something."

"Yeah, buddy?" Larry says, smiling more to his donors than at the kid. "What is it?"

"I don't like the way you talk to my mama," Steve says clearly and loudly, silencing what feels like the whole room. "You're mean and you make her cry sometimes, and then she's sad for a long time and it makes me sad too. If you can't say anything nice than you shouldn't talk at all!"

Larry freezes.

"Kids just," Larry eventually laughs. "Kids say the damned things, don't they? Steve-o, come-"

He reached out but Steve darts back, circling Callahan and hiding behind his legs, "You can't be mean to me anymore 'cause Officer Callahan is gonna arrest you if you throw stuff at me."

Callahan stands stock still.

He can feel every eye on him, including Chief McKinley. God, he's hyperaware of every breath happening in the room which is why he's also aware of the exact moment Steve makes a run for it.

Billy : "Why are you without your shirt again!?"
