âThatâs a badass name. Asher,â he said, taking the offered hand and shaking it firmly, ânice to meet ya, even if the circumstances are royally fucked.â
Shouldering the heavy bag, he fiddled with the straps for a bit before hefting his weapon of choice over his shoulder.
âAlright. I say we keep scavenging for supplies as we go through the vault âcause weâre in for the hike of our lives. Weapons, food, and water. My sense of direction is not the best so if youâre down with being the brains of this operation - which you clearly are - and navigate us in the right direction, Iâll be the pack mule.â To prove his commitment, he grabbed another bag, an empty one, and threw it over his shoulder to join the one already there.
Then, he smiled.
âAs long as thereâs no rabid, mutated anything, we have a good change at making it to Cali.â
For the first time in a while, Radix wasnât taken by surprise. She still managed a good handshake, though, something her very first foster father had taught her.  âThank you - most people just think itâs weird. I like Asher, too - sounds like the strong, silent hero from a 90â˛s video game.â
Radix laughed softly.  âYouâve got yourself a deal. I wonât make you carry everything, though, I can help out a little if weâve got to walk all that way. From the plans I could find there are a couple of storage rooms that are our best bet. And we need to get into the Administratorâs office. Itâs the only area controlled by its own locking mechanism which means itâs where the good stuff is.â
Asherâs comment made her laugh, but it also made her wonder.  âI donât know what the wildlife is going to look like - thatâs a good question, though. Hopefully nothing huge and maneating, at least. Come on, this way.â
