I made a Naruto Skill Tree
My obsessive deranged over-outlining as reached new and terrible heights
I'm working on a system to outline power progression
As you can see: It involves Skill Trees.
The two blue nodes in the center are Chakra Control and Chakra Points. CC is a level system between 1-30, CP works like mana points and are the "cost" of both purchasing and using a jutsu.
To the left we have Ninjutsu branches, which include "colorless" Ninjutsu as well as branches for every Release -- Elemental, Yin, Yang, Barrier, and Medical. Every branch includes nodes for "purchasing" Jutsu between levels D and S, except Colorless, which includes E-Rank. Wood Style is included but requires a special unlock.
In order to purchase a Jutsu level you need to have core stats high enough to use it.
E-Rank Jutsu cost 2 Chakra Points and require between level 1-3 Chakra Control
D-Rank Jutsu cost 4 Chakra Points and require between levels 3-5 Chakra Control
C-Rank Jutsu cost 7 Chakra Points and require between levels 5-10 Chakra Control
B-Rank Jutsu cost 10 Chakra Points and require between levels 10-15 Chakra Control
A-Rank Jutsu cost 15 Chakra Points and require between levels 15-25 Chakra Control
S-Rank Jutsu cost 20+ Chakra Points and require between levels 20-30 Chakra Control
CP is also how much it "costs" to use that Jutsu. So, for example, we know that when Sasuke first learned the Chidori, he could only use it three times in one day. Since the Chidori is noted as being a uniquely taxing Jutsu, lets say it costs 30 CP. That means at the time of the Chunin Exams, Sasuke had 90 CP and level 20-ish Chakra Control.
Looking up we have a Taijutsu tree, which is basically treated like the Physical stat and includes nodes for strength, speed, stealth, endurance, tenacity, and skill/style (which allows you to master a specific fighting style or purchase and mix/match other ones) as well as weapon proficiency and weapon specialization.
To the right is the Genjutsu tree for sensing, breaking, enduring, and casting various types of Genjutsu.
Down south we have Sensing, which includes both normal perception and chakra/Jutsu-based Sensing abilities (Range detail clarity etc)
There are offshoots for Kekkei Genkai/Hiden which each connect to their own unique tree based on the bloodline or clan of the person connecting to it, Sage mode which has its own tree, Trap Making and Sealing which have their own trees, and Intelligence/Strategy and Charisma, which aren't strictly Jutsu or Chakra abilities, but let's be so honest, Naruto's Talk No Jutsu is his greatest weapon, and Shikamaru's brain is like 90% of his skill set.
Since we know in order to graduate the Academy you need to be able to preform three E-Rank Jutsu (Substitution, Transformation, Clone) we know the bare minimum core stats for an Academy Graduate are 6 CP and level 3 CC (probably closer to 10-12 CP actually since the kids don't show any visible exhaustion after using all three jutsu.)
We don't really know much about the genjutsu or taijutsu teachings in the Academy other than It's A Thing That Happens, so let's say the absolute bare minimum is at least one point in Recognizing, Breaking, and Casting a genjutsu, as well as one pont each in Speed, Strength, Weapon Proficiency and two points in Skill/Style (Konoha Kenpo)
That means the absolute most bottom of the class level you can be at and still graduate the Academy is
Based on some calculations I'm pulling out of my ass, that puts the average Academy graduate somewhere closer to
With more skilled students obviously having higher points in whatever categories they excel at.
Based on some more totally legit and definitely correct calculations, that means
Average person taking the Chunin exams ranks at about
Level 12-15 Chakra Control
and at least 5-20 points in other specialties
Tokubetsu Jounin stat blocks tend to look kind of like
Level 15-20 Chakra Control
15 points in other Specialties
Whill a Full Jounin averages at about
Level 25-30 Chakra Control
15-30 points in other Specialties
And of course using these as the base blocks, I can shuffle points around and add more wherever a character uniquely excels or uniquely sucks at a particular stat, like taking basically all of Lee and Guy's stats and putting them into Taijutsu, buffing Kurenai's genjutsu stats, figuring out how many CP a single Shadow Clone would cost, multiplying that by I think it was like fucking 150 clones that Naruto used in his fight against Mizuki, and using that to guesstimate about how much Chakra Naruto has at the start of the series compared to everybody else.
"But why would you do all of this" honestly, just for fun! And also to use as an outlining tool to help me conceptualize the way different characters stack up against each other in fights, and how all of them are progressing through the series. I can decide how many points a character gains based on days spent training/meditating/etc, and which nodes or abilities are only unlockable through plot events (like leveling up a Sharingan through exposure to trauma) and use that to map out how many scenes I need exploring a character's pursuit of power, or decide how early on I want a character to gain access to certain branches on the tree.
But also because I have something wrong with me. Honestly that's probably most of it.
